[AI] New Google Feature Flags Dangerous Sites for Users
New Google Feature Flags Dangerous Sites for Users Alert page warns of possible risks from malicious sites. Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service Google has begun alerting users whenever they click on a search result that may take them to a dangerous Web site. The new feature, which had been spotted earlier this week, goes live officially Friday, according to an announcement from The Stop Badware Coalition , which is collaborating with Google on this effort. When users attempt to click over to a Web site considered to be potentially dangerous, Google shows users an alert page that informs them of the possible risk and gives them the option to click back to the results page or continue on to the questionable Web site. How It Works The flagged Web sites have been reported as dangerous to The Stop Badware Coalition. Google will progressively replace the generic alert page with pages containing specific reports about the Web sites. The Stop Badware Coalition will provide these individual reports as well. The Stop Badware Coalition is a nonprofit organization led by Harvard University and the University of Oxford and backed by Google, Lenovo Group, and Sun Microsystems. This new Google feature attempts to address a real problem: Search engines routinely display links to Web sites that download spyware and adware to visitors' PCs, exploit security vulnerabilities and attempt to scam users and include them in spam lists. In the U.S., people land on malicious Web sites about 285 million times per month by clicking on search results from the five major search engines, according to a recent study conducted by McAfee's SiteAdvisor unit. http://www.pcworld.com/article/126656-1/article.html?RSS=RSS Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. Hello sir, It should be optional for us that where we want to sit. - Original Message - From: Mohammed Asif Iqbal [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, August 07, 2006 10:18 AM Subject: Re: [AI] DGCA Guidelines for Blind passengers travelling by Air Hi folks, I have to travel frequently for official purposes. I generally go by Jet airways. I also strongly feel that since there are low air fare, we nmay be asking too much for discounted or concessional fare. Jet Airways always makes blind passengers sit in the last row which is closest to the toilets. They tell us that they want to keep us nearest to the crew so that in case of any emergencey they may take proper and good care of blind passengers. Our submisstion is that the rear portion of the aircraft is more noisy as compared to the front portion and why should be made to sit closest to the toilets and get continuously disturbed by the visits of the passengers to the toilet? PL] I have travelled by Jet Airways several times and this has not been my experience. snip 3. Airlines should give us concession on all categories of fairs. The airlines have a special category of fair with a very limited number of seats. Actually, we don't get any concession, it is actually a discounted ticket which is almost double the cost of cheapest fair available today in airlines. This means, they issue us tickets in waiting in spite of the availibality of seats in other categories of fair. PL] why should they do that? With the current airfares, I would doubt any concession is required. 5. Escort should also get concessional tickets in air travel. PL] how would you prove that the person travelling with you is an escort and not a business associate or somebody who has just taken advantage of the provision to get a low-cost airfare? [AI] Warning on search engine safety
Warning on search engine safety Teenage boy listening to music, BBC/Corbis Free music downloads have their risks, warns a report Some net searches are leading users to websites that expose them to spam, spyware and other dangerous downloads, reveals a report. According to the research the most dangerous words to search for are free screensavers. The report found that 64% of the sites found using this phrase were flagged as causing problems for users. The authors urged search sites to tighten up rules to ensure users are not inadvertently exposed to harm. Dangerous game It is well known that visiting sites offering porn, gambling and free MP3s leaves users at serious risk of falling victim to spyware and adware. However, the research by Ben Edelman and Hannah Rosenbaum reveals that those carrying out searches for innocuous subjects are at risk too. The report looked at the websites returned for 1,394 popular keywords searches found via Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Ask. The results returned for each search term were then analysed using the Site Advisor security tool. Once installed this piece of software warns users when they browse websites known to be dangerous. The most benign of the pages that Site Advisor flags up try to change browser settings (to redirect people to ad sites) and the most dangerous deluge users with spam or bundle adware and spyware in with downloads. In one case signing up with one site led to a test e-mail address getting more than 300 spam messages per week. DANGEROUS KEYWORDS Free screensavers Bearshare Screensavers Winmx Limewire Download Yahoo messenger Lime wire Free ringtones Some of these risky sites use security flaws and loopholes in browsers to install software without users' knowledge and can lead to that machine being hijacked or to a user losing personal data. The riskiest search terms were associated with downloads (such as screensavers and free ringtones) and file-sharing (such as Bearshare and limewire). Searching under these categories returned a substantial proportion of dangerous sites. The authors speculate that spammers and scammers are turning to websites to try to snare victims as efforts are made to stop spam before it reaches e-mail inboxes. Where internet users go, attackers follow, wrote the authors. Across all searches approximately 4-6% of sites returned were flagged as dangerous. The authors noted that this was more alarming than it first appeared because American net users carry out almost 6 billion searches per month. This translates to 285 million clicks on these potentially dangerous sites every month. Even a single visit to a dangerous site can have serious and lasting implications for the average internet user, wrote the authors. The number of risky sites increases when users click on sponsored results - the adverts generated to accompany particular search terms. Dangerous sites are two to four times as common in sponsored results found the research. We are troubled by the untrustworthiness of search engines' ads, said the authors. The authors urged the search engines to get much tougher on those who buy adverts to accompany searches and expose those that abuse visitors. We're alarmed by the scope of these problems - by the many ways search engines lead users to sites that turn out to be untrustworthy or worse, concluded the report. Regards, Shadab Husain. __ Yahoo! [AI] Google warns on 'unsafe' websites
Google warns on 'unsafe' websites Google warning page, Google The warnings will pop up before people visit a site Google has started warning users if they are about to visit a webpage that could harm their computer. The warning will pop up if users click on a link to a page known to host spyware or other malicious programs. The initiative comes out of a larger project cataloguing programs that plague people with unwanted ads, spy on web habits or steal personal data. Google is one of several companies trying to act as an in-flight adviser to ensure people stay safe online. Web watch The warnings will be seen by anyone using the search engine who clicks on a link to a site identified as harmful by the Stop Badware coalition. Google, PC maker Lenovo and Sun set up this initiative in January 2006 to identify dangerous software and the websites that try to trick people into installing these malicious programs. DANGEROUS KEYWORDS Free screensavers Bearshare Screensavers Winmx Limewire Download Yahoo messenger Lime wire Free ringtones Initially the warnings seen via the search site will be generic and simply alert people to the fact that a site has been flagged as dangerous. Eventually the warnings will become more detailed as Stop Badware researchers visit harmful sites and analyse how they try to subvert users' machines. The warning suggests that people try a different site but if they want to continue to the potentially dangerous webpage Google will not stop them. A research report released in May 2006 looked at the safety of the results returned by a search and found that, on average, 4-6% of the sites had harmful content on them. For some keywords, such as free screensavers the number of potentially dangerous sites leapt to 64%. The research report was partly sponsored by McAfee's SiteAdvisor which also warns people when they are about to visit potentially harmful sites. Another company ScanSafe has also created the Scandoo search engine which overlays its warnings on results produced via Google and MSN. Most dodgy websites that have spyware or are infected with viruses come through search, said Eldar Tuvey, chief executive of ScanSafe. Because they are the ones that people do not know as well and find through searching. __ Yahoo! India Answers: Share what you know. Re: [AI] Confederations of indian Industries (CII) Newsletter
Dear Mohammad: I feel the general level of awareness on the capabilities of a VH in itself is very low. For instance, when I mention that I work for an organisation (I don't often reveal that I'm a journalist), some people immediately ask things like: Who is the one who employed someone who can't see? I'm sure most of us aren't terribly offended by such questions any more as we have become somewhat immuned to it (after listening to such questions for so long). So, I feel it's important to start writing any article on the basic capabilities of a VH. Secondly, the issue of employment is far more important. Though it's heartening to find that awareness levels are improving, it still needs to be emphasized that a VH doesn't require anything more than the essential assistive technology to work. I'm sure that many would have heard Shanti's presentation at CII's special conference on disability, but still mentioning the kind of work she has been doing is still relevant, because these are not things that comes to people's minds instantly and even if does, many may be interested to get her contact etc. Thirdly, Pl make a detail mention of the PWD act. I find the awareness about this piece of legislation is very low. Pl mention what the act provides and what it doesn't, because this would enable us to create widespread backing from the industries for our cause. Finally, pl mention about accessibility. If these industries are committed to the cause of the disability, they should show their support through building accessible facilities and installing technologies that improves accessibility. I'm sure most of these things are already in your mind, but still I thought putting these in a proper order may be of help to you. Warm Regards, L.
