Re: [AI] require some info regarding scanner
Hetal, You can buy most of the standard flat bed scanners available in the market and then use some optical character recognition or OCR software to convert your scanned images to text that Jaws or any other screen readers can read. Most of the HP scanners available in the market like HP or BenQ can be used. OCR software include FineReader or Kurzweil 1000 which is a scanning and reading application specially designed for the blind. Hello Hetal You may try Umax 4100 which comes along with ABBYY finereader which is an OCR program. It is quite decent. Re: [AI] require some info regarding scanner
Hello Yes, there are scanners, by which you can scan books. But, the paper quality and print of the text should be very clear, in my opinion. With this you need to have a software called 'kurzveil', which will read the text, or rather image. Remember, that you would not be able to get 100 per cent clarity by it, I suppose. By the way, I think that this is your first mail if I'm not wrong. May I have the liberty to know that what are you doing etc! We would better have the OCR's which use mobile camera to convert the image into text. Forgot to add Mr. Agrwal, that unless you are put on moderation, all your messages reach the list. Then where from does the question of letting you express your opinions arise? If thwarting your opinions was the intent of the moderator, then yours, Kasha's and Rajani's mail would not have reached here. Dear Kiran my intention was not to blame you or otherwise, what i am expecting from you as a moderator whenever any new member joins the list you should welcome him or her and introduce to the group. however let us stop this conterversy and hope for the better. with regards Dattu Agarwal. Re: [AI] Kasha
I'm sorry to express myself in a rather negative and pathetic way but I have a strong impression that some of the members of this list have nothing valuable to contribute and when this identity crisis haunts their minds, they start hounding others on the same list. To me, some of them also seem to be having this impression that running or moderating this list is a sort of business and every single member is paying for this. In my opinion, whosoever writes shit, like the one who compared our moderator with that of a Pakistani dictator has no moral standard to continue. I really wonder people do have that extent of time to write these shit of this kind? I think every single person on this list has a free hand to host and moderate a new list if he/she is not happy with the existing arrangements or the list itself is not living up to one's expectations rather than blaming somebody for nothing. Sometimes even your personal mails take too much time to reach their destination in which case you have nobody to blame, especially if you are not paying for the service. [AI] AccessIndia site prototype
Dear list members, As I have mentioned to you earlier, I have been working on developing the AccessIndia website for our group. This website will have a lot of utilities. I have finished designing a prototype for the same. And I am happy to let you all know that this prototype can now be accessed on a test site. The whole design is based on an efficient Content Management System which provides lots of features for collective information gather and content generation. Most content of the site will be available for all the users who want to browse, irrespective of they being members of AccessIndia list or not. However, only registered members of the site can add new content to the site. Once you are registered and your membership is approved, you will be able to post content to any of the multiple catagories or subcatagories of the site. In some cases, the posted content will have to be approved by a designated moderator. But this is only to check extraneous entries and not to have control over the content or site. The prototype of the site can be accessed only through the following URL: http://www.accessindia.org.in/cms The site is not at all linked from anywhere else. If you try to register for an account, please note that the registration has to be approved before you have full access rights to the site. Also note that this is just a test site. I have added a few sample articles and content just for testing. When the site is officially launched, most of the content and help texts will be rewritten. Secondly, adding or deleting catagories is a very simple job for the site owner and so your suggestions are welcome. Some catagories which are already there on the site do not appear in the list of links on the top. This is a known issue and I am working on it. If you would like to have a personal blog on the site, you need to e-mail me because this process has not been automated yet. Your feedback on the prototype is highly valuable to me. Please send in your comments to me directly on [EMAIL PROTECTED] unless you want some of your suggestions to be discussed on the list by other members. Before I forget, the site and all related services are totally free. Thanks and regards, Kiran. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Instead of writing to the list e-mail address, you have repeatedly sent messages to my personal address [EMAIL PROTECTED] When you did this the first time, I informed you about this error. How can you blame me for an error you kept on repeating even after sufficient information has been provided to you? Hi, I generally enjoy reading and do not reply. but with regards to this, my submission is that the mail referred to here was not fit for the group. everybody should follow the norms laid down by the group he/she joins. the job of a moderator is such that at times, one has to go through such painful experiences. so do not worry, be happy. - Original Message - From: "Kiran Kaja" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Sunday, August 13, 2006 9:26 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Promise Yourself > Dear list members, > > Over the past five years or so of AccessIndia's existence, I have had to > painfully moderate a lot of discussions on the list. Re: [AI] Any news about Vachaak and Safa?
The news about SAFA and Vachak is that the committee on SAFA has decided to provide the software at 10 training labs in Delhi itself and run the software and training programme here and get feedback on the software. After satisfactory run of the software at limited locations, the software will be made available for all. The continuous support for bug tracking and bugfixing will be provided extensively during this phase which will also put in place the mechanism for bug reporting etc. for the general release. NAB has passed the software and is confident about the performance of this software at this stage. Will keep the list informed about the next steps about the SAFA release and deployment. [AI] Microsoft warning on online games
Microsoft warning on online games Aug 15, 2006 Criminals are targeting the lucrative world of online games, an engineer at software giant Microsoft has warned. Dave Weinstein said that massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPG) like World of Warcraft were vulnerable to attack. Hackers could use malicious programs to steal players account information and then sell virtual items, such as gold or weapons, for real world cash. Some players accounts can be worth up to $10,000 (£5,300). "The police are really good at understanding someone stole my credit card and ran up a lot of money. It's a lot harder to get them to buy into 'someone stole my magic sword,'" he told the Reuters news agency. Mikko Hypponen a security specialist at security firm F-secure said that they have already dealt with hundreds of malicious programs that seek to steal players account details. "It might sound far-fetched but this is a real problem," he told the BBC News website. MMORPG allow players to take control of a character in a virtual world inhabited by a cast of thousands. Popular games include Ultima online, Everquest and World of Warcraft. Players buy the game and then pay a monthly subscription to access the online world. Gamers spend hours developing the skills of their characters and acquiring virtual objects to boost their strength and defeat their foes. The power of a character is often directly linked to the amount of time a player is willing to devote to playing the game. However, for players wanting to bypass this route a lucrative online market has developed buying and selling virtual objects such as potions and weapons. This is often done through auction sites like eBay and other specialist fan sites. Many of these transactions are against the terms and conditions of the games and must be carried out covertly. Some estimates have put an $800m (£418m) price tag on the global market in game items and cash. Last year, Sony launched the Sony Station Exchange for players of EverQuest to legally buy and sell in-game cash, magical items and characters. This lucrative market has now become a focus for hackers and identity thieves. Earlier this year, nearly a quarter of a million characters were created in the Korean online game Lineage using stolen identities. Many of the characters were thought to have been put to work in "gaming farms", where gangs of criminals work thousands of characters to acquire objects to be sold for real world cash. The Microsoft warning was made at the annual Gamesfest conference in Seattle. "Those of you who are working on massively multiplayer online games, organized crime is already looking at you," Mr Weinstein told games developers at the conference. He urged the games developers to be aware of the security risks. Mr Hypponen of F-secure said the most common way for criminals to steal account details was by using trojans. Trojans are an apparently harmless program that sit on a users computer collecting login and password information and sending it back to the hacker. Often the trojans are disguised as programs that will give a character special powers such as invisibility. They may be distributed through games' chat rooms or by e-mail. Once the hacker has the password details of a character they can login to the account and sell the characters weapons, potions and spells. "For some users it's a tragic loss," he said. Gamesfest runs in Seattle until 15 August. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4794139.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] AN ARTICLE AND A RELATED QUERY
Hello List, Though the article below is written specifically in connection with China, the model number mentioned in this article is the same what I have purchased recently. Do I also need to verify the same? if yes then what should be the modalities for that? Though this question appears to be more technical, I would also like to verify that the product that has been offered to me is genuine after all. ** Dell sued over 'false' ads claims Aug 11, 2006 Dell, the world's largest computer maker, is facing legal action in China over allegations of false advertising. The group has been sued over charges its laptops contained a different, cheaper chip than those advertised. According to state media reports at least 20 lawsuits have been filed against the Texas-based firm. In a statement on its Direct2Dell website, Dell admitted it had made an "unfortunate and unintended marketing mistake" and apologised for the error. Dell said had contacted customers and explained the difference between the two chips and offered full refunds to any customers who were still unsatisfied. Spokeswoman Sharon Zhang said the error took place after the firm began to switch the chips used in certain laptop models, but sales brochures and order forms were not updated in time. The problems centre on Dell's Inspiron 640M laptop, according to marketing materials the model was fitted with Intel's T2300 chip which allows a computer to run multiple software applications at the same time. However, in China, and some other countries Dell instead fitted the laptops with the T2300E chip which did not support this function. The chip also costs $32 less than the T2300. A report in the China Daily newspaper said the first case accusing Dell of false advertising had been filed in Shanghai on 26 July, and a further 19 were filed on 8 August in Xiamen. The court action could hinder Dell's attempts to lure customers away from rival Lenovo, the market leader in China. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4785641.stm Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Logitech Unveils VoIP Products
Logitech Unveils VoIP Products New gadgets include a keyboard with call buttons and a speakerphone. Nancy Gohring, IDG News Service Logitech introduced an array of new products today designed for VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) users, including a keyboard with dedicated call management buttons and a speakerphone. VoIP service provider Skype worked with Logitech to make some of the products exclusive to Skype in Europe. The European version of the new Logitech EasyCall Desktop includes a Skype-specific keyboard with dedicated buttons for launching Skype, making a call, ending a call, changing a usera??s online status, and speed-dialing. The package also includes a mouse and headset as well as a speakerphone, which eliminates echo and has control buttons such as volume, mute, call answer, and hang-up. In the U.S., the package is optimized for use with Yahoo Messenger with Voice and AOL's instant messenger service. It will sell in the U.S. for $130 and will be available in stores in both the U.S. and Europe in mid-September. The companies did not reveal the suggested retail price for Europe. Logitech also introduced a cordless handset for making and receiving Skype calls. The phone communicates wirelessly to a module that plugs into the USB port on a PC and can be used within 164 feet of the PC. It will start selling in October for $200 in the U.S. and Europe. Logitech will also sell a speakerphone, designed for VoIP calling, separate from the EasyCall package. The speakerphone connects to a PC via the USB port and will cost $100 when it becomes available in the U.S. and Europe later this year. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126721-page,1/article.html?RSS=RSS Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. [AI] Fire Hazard Prompts Gigantic Dell Laptop Battery Recall
Fire Hazard Prompts Gigantic Dell Laptop Battery Recall Company says 4.1 million batteries--affecting nearly all Dell notebook lines--are on the recall list. Robert Mullins, IDG News Service Computer maker Dell today said it will recall 4.1 million laptop computer batteries because of a potential fire hazard. It's reportedly one of the largest consumer electronics recalls in history. The lithium-ion batteries being recalled are installed in 2.7 million laptops sold in the United States and 1.4 million sold overseas between April 2004 and July 18 of this year, Dell said. "Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire," Dell said in a statement. The comapany said the overheating was caused by a manufacturing defect in batteries made for it by Sony. Customers may continue to use the laptop computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received, the company said. The recalled batteries were sold with the following Dell notebook computers: Dell Latitude D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810; Inspiron 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705; and Dell Precision M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations; and XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710. The batteries were also sold separately, including in response to service calls. The words "Dell" and one of the following are printed on the batteries: "Made in Japan" or "Made in China" or "Battery Cell Made in Japan Assembled in China," Dell said. Dell urged customers to visit the firm's Web site beginning at 1 a.m. U.S. Central Daylight Time Tuesday or call toll-free at 1-866-342-0011, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT. Dell is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin. In past instances of battery recall, Dell and the CPSC urged consumers to stop using the laptops' batteries until they received a replacement. Lithium-ion batteries also are used in cell phones, camcorders, digital cameras and other consumer electronics products. Dell said it is cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in conducting the recall. The federal agency described it as the largest recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry, according to published reports. According to the CPSC, lithium-ion batteries have been cited in recalls of other laptop models, including computers from Hewlett-Packard and from Apple Computer. Other Recent Laptop Battery Recalls Dell made other voluntary recalls of 22,000 laptop batteries in December 2005 , 284,000 in 2001 and 27,000 in 2000 , according to the CPSC. Dell reported six instances in which laptops overheated and caused fires since December of last year, although no one was injured in any of the incidents, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported today. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126735-page,1/article.html?RSS=RSS Vikas Kapoor, MSN ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Yahoo ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype ID: dl_vikas Mobile: (+91) 9891098137. In that case, I think you need to download the file instead of opening it. Simply move to that link and press the left mouse button. A menu will be activated and you will find 'save target as' option somewhere there. then press enter and wait for the download vizard to appear. it'll ask you whether you want to open or save the file. press tab and press enter on the save button. select the location where you want to save the file and save it. I think the rest is self-explanatory. Go to the particular drive/folder where you have saved the file and open it. I presume that you are using acrobat reader version 7 or later. I think jaws does not support the previous versions. I'm not sure about version 6, though. [AI] Math tool for blind Review
Hi All, sharing this interesting article on some new Math tools. It is quite long. So please decide whether you want to read this or not. thanks and cheers. asif Product Evaluation Figure It Out: A Review of Virtual Pencil Arithmetic and Virtual Pencil Algebra from Henter Math Janet Ingber Your computer can now simulate a pencil and paper when doing math problems, thanks to Virtual Pencil software from Henter Math. The software creates a workspace that looks like a piece of paper. The computer cursor becomes a pencil, allowing you to solve problems, show the work, and put numbers in the correct columns. The two Virtual Pencil programs were designed by Ted Henter, the founder of Henter-Joyce and the creator of JAWS. After Henter-Joyce merged with Blazie Engineering and Arkenstone to form Freedom Scientific, Henter started a new company called Henter Math. "Virtual Pencil gives students the ability to solve math problems independently, and it is the first software of its type," said Jim Watson, head of sales and marketing for Henter Math. "Virtual Pencil is a software application specifically designed for students who are blind, visually impaired, learning disabled, or motor-skill impaired." Watson continued, "Ted is an engineer, and his oldest daughter would come home from school and ask him to help her with her homework. Ted, knowing a great deal of math, understood how to do the math and could come up with the answer, but he couldn't do it by himself to show his daughter. Hence, the idea of Virtual Pencil was born." Virtual Pencil offers two math programs: VP Arithmetic and VP Algebra. VP Arithmetic covers such operations as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions. VP Algebra allows you to solve both simple and complicated problems and equations. Setup Virtual Pencil Arithmetic works with JAWS; Window-Eyes; Connect OutLoud; and several SAPI speech engines, including the Microsoft text-to-speech engine, as well as with a refreshable braille display. JAWS scripts are included with the Virtual Pencil programs. The scripts were written for JAWS 7.0, but JAWS 5.0 and 6.0 work well and require just a simple adjustment. From within Virtual Pencil, hold down the Insert key and hit the F2 key. Then type in the letter "s" for Script Manager and hit enter. Then do Save and Compile. Virtual Pencil will talk you through this process. Users with low vision can customize the screen with the built-in Windows color palette, which allows you to modify the font size, foreground and background colors, text color, and other parameters. ZoomText and MAGic can be used with this application. Switches and a mouse can be used by students who have difficulty with motor skills. Virtual Pencil Algebra does not work with Window-Eyes or a refreshable braille display. It does work with JAWS and the Microsoft text-to-speech engine. Teachers can choose how to present assignments: They can type the problem directly into a student's computer in Virtual Pencil, put the problems on a disk, or send the problems as an e-mail attachment. With the latter option, the student just opens the attachment, and it automatically loads into the application. The student can e-mail the completed assignment, copy it to a disk, or print it out using an ink printer. VP Arithmetic also supports a braille embosser, whereas VP Algebra currently works only with the embossers from ViewPlus Technologies that draw a raised-dot image of what is on the screen. Installation Both Virtual Pencil products work with any version of Windows, from 95 to XP. For this article, Windows XP was used. To install the software, simply place the CD into the CD-ROM drive. The software that was used for this article was a demonstration version, and both VP Arithmetic and VP Algebra were offered, as was Connect OutLoud. However, VP Arithmetic and VP Algebra are stand-alone programs and are purchased separately. For this installation, VP Arithmetic was selected. Once the application is chosen, pressing the Tab key presents four more options: explore audio training sessions, review the "Read Me" file, install, and exit. The software installation is simple to do, and verbal prompts are given throughout the process. Once the installation is complete, you are presented with three options: View the "Read Me" file, launch the application, or finish. Selecting Finish will take you out of Virtual Pencil. The program is also automatically installed on the desktop, which makes it easy to find. Getting Started and Getting Help The audio training sessions, which are located on the installation CD, provide extensive information about the application. The "VP Intro" audio training session provides a great deal of general information about the software. This tutorial contains a list of 11 separate files, including VP Overview, Using Help, Context Help, Menus, and Hot Keys. Although some of the information may see
