[AI] Talks performance issues

2006-08-23 Thread Sudhir R
Hi folks !

I have been using the Talks software (Ver 3.00.5, one month free trial licence
) on my Nokia 6681 for the past 21 days. While the software enables one to be
independent to a large extent, I have been noticing some performance issues
like the software hanging suddenly, being a little slow to respond etc. Of
course, the problem could be due partly to my own inexperience with this new
handset, fumbling with the keypad, pressing multiple buttons at once or could
be because it is a trial licence. But, the simple fact of the matter is, I am
unable to dial a 10 digit number on the keypad, without the software hanging
at least twice while dialling.

Would like to get your feedback on this. Does the phone memory size (8 MB in
Nokia 6681) have anything to do with performance (like RAM size in a PC) ?

I need to decide on the purchase of a licence within the next 10 days and would
value your comments before making the purchase.

Regards

R Sudhir

Hi Sudhir
Firstly, install Talks on your memory card. You can once restart the phone
by powering it off. This should not happen. Demo license has no issues with
it.

when this button is pressed, a dialog appears, first with four radio

[AI] a doubt

2006-08-23 Thread Subramani L
Folks:

Though by and large I don't have any problems in using my JAWS 5.0, I
face certain minor annoyances. For instance, when I work on MS Word, I
often find JAWS reading a sentence in a para as 'blank'. I will have to
go to that sentence press space and back space (in order to bring back
the sentence to its original position) and then find it reading the
sentence perfectly.

This is of course with an individual sentence, there are times when JAWS
reads the entire Word document as 'Blank'. I would then go to format
background settings, change the background colour to white (even though
I'm not sure if the background colour of the document in question is
white or not) and then find JAWS reading the document properly.
Sometimes, I will have to perform the task several times in order to
make it work. Very rarely, even this procedure won't work. I will then
change the document from 'Web layout view' to 'print layout' or vice
versa if it doesn't work in the other mode.

Although I largely get away with all this tricks, it is a big problem
when I am working against shorter deadlines and at times, I completely
lose my cool with my system.

1 Can you tell me why such problems occur?
2 Are there ways of permanently fixing it?

Subramani

Hi Subramony !

As someone who has had such annoying experiences in the past, here are some
things to watch out for while using Jaws :

a) Ensure that the particular window where Jaws is focussing is maximised.
If not, maximise it by pressing Alt + Space Bar and then pressing X.
b) Ensure the Word document is opening in the Normal view mode. If not,
press Control + Alt + N to bring it to Normal view.
c) Ensure that the optimum configurations recommended for Windows and MS
Word are carried out. These recommendations are available on ATI's website
(http://www.accesstechnologyinstitute.com). Please let me know if you need
a copy to be sent to you.

These setting changes usually ensure a trouble-free performance from our
dear, yet temperamental, screen reader.

 Hi,

The behaviour you describe in your message occurs when you computer or
 your
Internet service provider cashes the previously visited pages for faster

 this,
after starting Internet Explorer do the following.

 1. Go to the tools menu and then to Internet options.

 2. Tab to the button labelled settings.

 3. Choose the option that refreshes the cash at every visit to the page.

 4. Click on the okay button as many number of times as required to

This can be done from Start Settings Control Panel Display Theme

Hi friends,
thanks for the replies to my question.

I think what pranav said would be the best option for me, that way i
wlll always have the web version of the page.
When kiran wrote the control F5, i found in the help how it is different
between f5

F5 or CTRL R - Refresh the current Web page.

CTRL F5 - Refresh the current Web page, even if the time stamp for the
Web version and your locally stored version are the same.

So, control F5 would also work for me but i will have ensure pressing it
each time i visit the webpages of the concerned website.

To get the latest version of the page, press Ctrl+F5. The page will be

2006-08-23 Thread Avneesh
hello Pranay,

This is a common problem if the proxy server of the network through which
your workstation is connected maintain good amount of cache.
Well, you can use F5 or control+F5 when such problem arise. F5 may not be
successful always because it is dependent on individual pages. While
Control+f5 triggers force refresh so its use is better in such case.

[AI] Configuring Yahoo / Gmail

2006-08-23 Thread Kaja, Kiran
Hi all,

There have been a number of questions on the same topic of configuring
Gmail or Yahoo in e-mail clients in the last three days or so. I feel
that we can create a tutorial on this topic and put it up on the
AccessIndia site. Because I don't use any of these services, I request
one of you to write a tutorial and send it to me. If you want me to
review it, I'll be happy to do that. You can either send me the tutorial
on [EMAIL PROTECTED] or post it on the website. After you login
with your username and password, you get a link Create new entry.
Activate this link and the create new entry page is displayed. Eneter a
title, select the category correctly and paste the body of the article
in the body field. Don't worry if you have made any mistake. Any new
posting for now will come to me first.

Is anyone interested in writing this article?

Thanks,
Kiran.
