Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired

2006-09-14 Thread Subramani L
I do agree that voice facility can be provided as an add-on in a regular
ATM. Also, traveling from one end of the city to the other, just to use
voice guided ATM is more strenuous than going to the bank closer and
withdrawing money, be it with a sighted help.

[AI] Reliable anti-virus freeware ?

2006-09-14 Thread Sudhir R
Hi folks !

Yesterday, I discovered much to my dismay that AVG 7.0 anti-virus is no longer
available as a free download any longer. I had found it quite reliable over
the past few years and now I have to locate something else equally good, yet
free.

Any suggestions, please ?

Re: [AI] Canyou creat this new folder?

2006-09-14 Thread K Ramkrishna
Dear Sureshji and Keshav,
When I wrote con or CON or Con, I meant that con: all lower case, CON: all
capital and C capital . I did not mean that the folder name should be con
or CON or Con. I am indeed surprised at this miscommunication. You try now
and see for yourself.

 Dear Listers,
Can you create a new folder in the name of con or CON or Con in your
 PC.
 Let
you be assured that you can never do this. It seems that the entire
 software
team at Microsoft including Bill Gates could not explain this funny
phenomenon. Try it out and let me know, if you succeed.

[AI] India's First Computer Training Programme recognized by IGNOU for visually challenged and other disabled persons

2006-09-14 Thread Debojyoti Roy
Hello Friend,

NIP is a Non-government Voluntary Organization, which is engaged in different
educaitonal and social activities and committed to promote value based ideology
in this decaying moral set up. Our organization has been taking up programmes
for socially, economically backward and physically challenged segments of the
society.

Computer is the latest gift to us and is crating miracles in every sphere in
our life. So, now a days computer education is essential for social
advancement. But in this situation there is no Government recognized computer
training centre for the visually impaired and physically challenged persons.
So, they suffer a lot in facing various situations. Keeping this reality in
mind, we have been running a programme of computer education for the blind. We
have approached Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for a computer
course for the visually challenged and physically challenged persons. And we
are very excited that IGNOU has approved a Special Study Centre, No. 2868D and
the session will begin from January, 2007.

This will be a unique programme as there is no such course. Successful
implementation of this programme will help the visually and physically
challenged persons to add a new dimension to achieve their goal.

Your best wishes and kind co-operation will be very much oblilged in
fulfilling our dream of Non-discrimination, Integration and Participation.

  Thanking you,

Re: [AI] ATMs for Visually Impaired

2006-09-14 Thread RAJAT
Below is the news item appeared in Indian express in 2003. But as there is
no circular to issue Debit cards to Blind persons and almost all banks puts
blind in the category of not eligible persons lists for debit card issue
itself becomes difficult.
Note: now-a-days ATM card is not issued and debit card is given instead
which again has signature problem, no bank is issuing debit card to visually
impaired persons.

Rajat Agarwal

_
Mumbai>
Thursday , March 20, 2003
Finally, he gets the ATM card he was longing for
Sweta Ramanujan
Mumbai, March 19: Over two months after he was denied an ATM card by his
bank for being visually impaired, Subhash Salve is a happy man. After his
story
appeared in Newsline, his own bank offered him an ATM card and so did ICICI
bank.
"I got an ATM card from ICICI bank over 15 days ago. I am very happy," Salve
exclaims.

We read the news report about Subhash Salve's bank denying him an ATM card.
We promptly approached him and offered him an ICICI bank ATM card," says O P
Shrivastava, head of Retail Channel Infrastructure Group, ICICI Bank.
There's more behind Salve's smile. On Wednesday morning, he was invited by
ICICI Bank to inaugurate their first talking ATM for the visually-impaired
near
Ravindra Natya Mandir at Prabhadevi.
The ATM has voice software designed to help visually-impaired customers of
the bank to use the machine. It has a set of headphones through which a
voice-over
guides the user in a language of his or her choice.
There are special keys with raised 'pips' and Braille keys to aid the user
during the transaction. For instance, the slot where the card needs to be
inserted
has one pip while the slot through which the money is delivered has two.
Little details have been taken care of, like a pip on the digit '5' which is
at the centre of the key pad. The user can use this key as a reference point
for punching in his PIN number and the figure he wants to withdraw.
Even the screens have been modified to be user-friendly for the visually-
impaired.
"This modified ATM, a part of ICICI's 'Electronic Lobby', was first
introduced in Pune, a year ago. The one at Prabhadevi is the first of its
kind in Mumbai,"
says Shrivastava. "We may introduce more such machines in Mumbai during the
next financial year."
Salve likes the new ATM for the independence it gives him. "It is very
convenient. Any visually impaired person can use it without having to depend
on someone
to accompany them," he explains. Salve is relieved mainly because now he won
't have to risk carrying lots of cash around.
The machine also has a bill payment facility and a video-conferencing
terminal for customers to interact with the bank's call centre.
"We believe that every customer of ours must have access to all our
services. Somebody's physical disability is never a deterrent to us," says
Shrivastava.

Re: [AI] does any version of JAWS runs on 64bit machines?

2006-09-14 Thread Aruni Arsh
As of now, we are not using a 64 bit OS. We are still using the 32-bit
windows. So the question of jaws supporting the 64-bit machine doesn't
arise. It's been reported that the vista will be available in both 32
and 64 bit versions. Once we have the 64-bit vista running, freedom
scientific will surely update jaws to make it compatible with the
64-bit functioning.

No one can defend ICICI for this discrimination. But their ATM's, or any

other ATM's for that matter, can be used by users with their accounts in

other banks also.
I think, They charge rs50 extra if you use their ATM and don't have an

2006-09-14 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
I am forwarding one of my earlier replies, which also explains secure and

Hi Vidya,

Security dialog is to inform you about secure or non secure web pages. when
you transition from a secure page to a non secure or vice versa, the dialog
pops up to inform you the status.

You can also figure out if the page is secure or not by looking at the web
address. if it has http: then it is not secure, but if it has https: then it
is secure.

In a secure page, the information that you enter on the page is sent to the
web site after encrypting it. The web site receiving the encrypted
information then decrypt the information. The algorithm (RSA algorithm named
with initial letters of three of it's inventors) uses pair of keys, out of
which one key is public and the other is private.
The web site sends the public key to your browser , but no one other than
the web site knows the private key (that's why it is private. Any one who
knows the public key can encrypt the information, but without the private
key no one can decrypt the information.

private key how ever is not totally secure, given enough computing power, it
can be deciphered. But the computing power available commonly is not enough
to decrypt 128 bit or higher. it is shown by many researchers (using super
computers) that up to 140 bits can be decrypted, (exact number may differ)
as
it's been some time for me when I had last updated my knowledge. the time it
takes to decipher a key, grows exponentially, i.e. if it takes to decrypt a
key an hour, it will take 2 hours to decrypt the same key with one more bit
added to it. If you have read about the story where a king is happy and
promises a guy to give what ever he wants, and the guy says give me 1 grain
on the first cell of the chess, 2 on second and 4 on third, double the
amount with each cell, and later they figure out that pretty soon they ran
out of the whole grain supply of the state. that's how exponential growth
works.

The same technology is used by digital signature, but the process is
reversed. anything that one wants to sign, is encrypted using the private
key and your public key is used to decrypt the information. now the problem.
how will someone verify that actually you signed the document? since your
private key is not available to anyone. There comes a hierarchical system of
maintaining private keys, where each entity stores the keys, and the final
private key is with verisign, who maintains it somewhere in USA and the
facility is guarded like nuclear facilities. When we get digital signature,
we get our private key which we should preserve with utmost care, and the
issuing agency saves our private key by encrypting it with their public key,
and their own private key stays with their issuing agency. and they do not
have access to their own private key, so they generate our public key before
encrypting our private key, as they will not be able to decrypt our private
key then onwards. So if you want to verify that some public key is actually
the public key of the entity who claims so, you send that public key to the
verification agency, who maintains the private key and the public key, they
match your public key with the public key that they have, and tell you the
status.

Digital certificates maintain all the information required to identify an
entity. But we don't have to do all the above ourselves, mostly the software
that we use do all the activity behind the seen.

Hope it clarifies.

Regards
Dinesh

I have also an account with icici bank. it is true that the Delhi office of
the bank initially refused to open the account on the grounds that there was
a slight difference in my signatures. but on my insistence, my case was sent

d-mat and brokerage account also with the same bank and I am also using the
internet banking facility.
better send your case to the head office in Bombay. the Delhi authorities of
the Bank are a bit reluctant to open the account of a visually challenged

[AI] Microsoft Takes Third Shot at Buggy Security Patch

2006-09-14 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Microsoft Takes Third Shot at Buggy Security Patch

Will a trifecta try at fixing Internet Explorer patch be the charm?

Robert McMillan, IDG News Service

Microsoft just can't seem to shake problems with its MS06-042 update for
Internet Explorer.

Microsoft today was forced to release its third version of the update because
of a new security bug discovered in the update, according to Tony Chor, a
group program manager with Microsoft.

First released on August 8,
the critical patch
fixes a handful of problems with the browser, but it has caused headaches for
some users. Embarrassingly, it also introduced a security vulnerability into
the browser, which was fixed last month.

"The original release of MS06-042 introduced a new security vulnerability for
IE 6.0 SP1 users which we addressed in a subsequent re-release," Chor
wrote in a Tuesday blog posting . "
However... a similar vulnerability was also discovered in IE5.01 on Windows
2000, IE 6.0 SP1 (in a different location), and the original release of Windows
Server 2003." His posting can be found here:

Problems Cropped Up Fast

Microsoft customers ran into problems with MS06-042 soon after it was released.
Web sites that used HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) 1.1 compression to
speed up the downloading of images could cause the browser to fail and users of
Web-based applications such as PeopleSoft, Siebel, and Sage CRM had problems
with the software.

Later in August, security researchers at eEye Digital Security disclosed that
Microsoft had introduced a new critical security vulnerability in the update.
Two days later Microsoft fixed the eEye bug in the MS06-042 re-release.

Apparently this re-release did not address this latest but "similar"
vulnerability mentioned by Chor. Microsoft executives could not be reached
immediately
for comment.

Microsoft often re-issues its security updates to fix minor bugs, but the
security issue discovered by eEye placed a lot more scrutiny on MS06-042.
Ultimately
the update
proved to be an ordeal
for Microsoft's Security Response Center, and for Microsoft customers. The
MS06-042 update can be found here:

No one can defend ICICI for this discrimination. But their ATM's, or any

other ATM's for that matter, can be used by users with their accounts in

other banks also.
I think, They charge rs50 extra if you use their ATM and don't have an
account with them.

[AI] Canyou creat this new folder?

2006-09-14 Thread K Ramkrishna
Dear Listers,
Can you create a new folder in the name of con or CON or Con in your PC. Let
you be assured that you can never do this. It seems that the entire software
team at Microsoft including Bill Gates could not explain this funny
phenomenon. Try it out and let me know, if you succeed.
regards
