Re: [AI] Need your guidance/suggestions

2007-01-14 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
Hello Mr. Pathak

For that kind of activity it is really high, and other than what harish has
already said, what comes to my mind, is that you may have some virus
activity going on. some viruses use computers on internet as attack platform
for other computers. What I mean, that your computer if it is infected with
such a virus, wil be attacking other computers, and will be generating huge
amount of data. The purpose of these attacks is to make so many requests for
a website or something that it is not able to handle the request and then
the site may behave in a way so as to be exposed to exploitations. I have
seen an example, where one computer which was not having service packs for
windows XP, had generated more than 1 GB internet trafic within a few hours.

So monitor your computer's usage buy noting in the connection window the
incomming and out going data transfer before you disconnect, this
information is lost after you disconnect,. You can look for some software
which can keep record for such activities.

Also ensure that your computer has SP2 (Service Pack 2) if you have windows
xp, or in all other cases you have all the updates for the operating system
you are using. Besides SP2, apply all security updates as they contain
important bug fixes for latest flause discovered in the operating system

  Hope it helps
Dinesh

[AI] news report on inaccessible two-rupee coins

2007-01-14 Thread Mamta
Hello!!!?
I think this may be the news report presented by Subramani sir.
This is just forwarded to me by my friend.
I hope this is the write one.

Unfriendly coins agitate the visually challenged

Bangalore: For Vishal Jain, a visually challenged PU
student in the city, spotting a two-rupee coin
 hasn't been a problem. "Generally, two-rupee coins
are hexagonal in shape and so, we can easily
distinguish them from other coins," he says.

But this small comfort is to be denied to Vishal and
his fellow visually challenged, as the recently
introduced two-rupee coins by Government Of India is
round and, as Vishal puts it: "Isn't any different
from coins of the same size."

Ability to distinguish the coins is vital for
several visually challenged, as they will be aware
of the change they are giving or receiving from a
shopkeeper, for instance, while paying for things
they have bought. While using the bills, they
distinguish them by comparing their length.

"A ten-rupee bill, when placed along with the
twenty-rupee or fifty-rupee bill, is shorter,"
Vishal points out. However, the RBI printed the Rs
500 bills a few years ago in the same size as their
Rs 100 bills, that confused even the normal people
who had to put up with the loss of giving the Rs 500
 bill instead of Rs 100.

"We don't have an issue with the five-rupee or
 fifty-paisa coins, but the two-rupee ones aren't
very distinguishable from the one-rupee in size,"
explains Madhu Singhal of the city-based NGO
Mithrajyothi, who is also visually challenged.
"While using the recently released two-rupee coins,
we are often left wondering if we are giving the
right change or if we are paying in excess."

Though honest shopkeepers do give back the excess
money, the less reliable ones do take the change
without the knowledge of the visually challenged.
"Of course, losing the money would be really
disappointing for us, but more than that, having
coins in different shapes would help us handle money
confidently," Ms Singhal says. "The government must
therefore help us by printing coins in various
 shapes."

Rajani, a visually challenged employee of a private
firm, says the government must consider the pros and
cons before venturing to introduce new coins. "We
have a substantial number of people in this country
who are visually challenged. So, the government must
take into account the difficulties we face before
changing the shape of the coins," she feels.

A group of visually challenged individuals based in
different cities are not only objecting to the
non-friendly currencies, but also urging fellow
visually challenged across the country to write to
the RBI and the government to introduce currencies
that can be easily used by the visually challenged.

 (L Subramani)

regards
Mamta.

Re: [AI] Need your guidance/suggestions

2007-01-14 Thread Vetrivel Murugan, Adhimoolam
I think Pathakk was very specific in identifying his internet activities and
henceforth 1125 MB is still a lot of space to consume and if the connection
has been used just for 30 minutes everyday only with text based activities,
then there is know question that his connection has either been miss-used by
someone or he is bombarded with the fake bills from MTNL. But remember since
it involves government agency, the unauthorized user himself/herself could
be MTNL's own staff and he should take this issues to the provider at the
earliest.

Hi Pathakk
If you are also browsing the net, your band usage goes up. In addition if
you are also doing some voice chatting etc., these are some other tasks
which would be consuming band width.

Finally Windows update and Anti virus defination files could be digging into
the usages.

Re: [AI] New PayPal Key to Thwart Phishers

And how is such a device to be made accessible?

-Original Message-

Subject: [AI] New PayPal Key to Thwart Phishers

New PayPal Key to Thwart Phishers

Over the next few months, Ebay will be offering its PayPal users a new tool in
the fight against phishers: a $5 security key.

The
security key
is actually a small electronic device, designed to clip on to a keychain, that
calculates a new numeric password every 30 seconds. PayPal users who sign
up to use the device will need to enter their regular passwords as well as the
number displayed on the key whenever they log in to the online payment service.

"The key is really going to give users one more layer of security for their
accounts," said Sara Bettencourt, a PayPal spokeswoman.

PayPal a Phishing Target

Because the numeric password changes so frequently, even successful phishers
will end up with obsolete numeric passwords and will be unable to empty PayPal
accounts.

"If you fall for a phishing scam and give away your user name and password ...
if you used the PayPal Security Key, a third party couldn't get to your account
because they wouldn't have this dynamic digit," Bettencourt said.

The Security Key could be an important tool for PayPal, whose Web site is
frequently spoofed
by phishers looking to steal user account information.

The PayPal Security Key is being tested by PayPal employees right now, and the
test will be opened up to beta users in the U.S., Germany, and Australia
"in the next month or so," Bettencourt said. Later this year, the company plans
to begin promoting the devices to all PayPal users. News of the new PayPal
system was first reported on
AuctionBytes.com .

PayPal users who want this
extra level of security
will be able to buy the devices for $5, but this fee will be waived for PayPal
business accounts.

PayPal's device is based on VeriSign's One-Time Password Token product, which is
also being tested by Charles Schwab and U.S. Bancorp.

ETrade also uses a similar system, based on RSA Security's SecurID tokens.

Over the past year, online financial companies have paid more attention to
authentication technologies such as the VeriSign tokens, which add a second
layer
of authentication to online transactions. Adoption of these "two-factor"
authentication techniques has been further boosted by new federal guidelines,
which require stronger authentication for online transactions.

Still, phishing attacks are becoming increasingly lucrative for criminals.

Research company Gartner estimates that phishers cost U.S. financial
institutions about $2.8 billion last year. The average loss per phishing attack
was
$1,244, up from $256 in 2005.

Hello
I am also a MTNL broadband user from Mumbai. You can enquire/get
assistance by dialing 1504. or by visiting www.register.mtnl.net.in
If you are a Delhi MTNL user, I am not sure about the above mentioned
link.
Check the history page where you can trace the sites you have logged
in. This is also available in MTNL site for individual subscribers.
Since it is not 100% secure, someone may be misusing your broadband
line.
