[AI] Myth of the fastest supercomputer

2007-11-16 Thread sweety bhalla
Myth of the fastest supercomputer

India may have launched itself on the world's map of raw computing power with
the Eka supercomputer from the Tata group, but even the world's fastest
supercomputer
cannot match the processing speed of your brain.

While your computer, on an average, can execute around 100 megaflops (million
of calculations per second), it can barely handle dictation.

For instance, it will take a single PC more than a few days to weeks to
calculate a weather map - a task best left to a supercomputer.

Your brain, on the other hand, is able to understand multiple languages,
process complex visual images, control your entire body, understand conceptual
problems and create new ideas.

Scientists reveal that the brain is made up of about one trillion cells with
100 trillion connections between those cells. Estimates put the brain as capable
of handling 10 quadrillion instructions per second.

Now compare that to the processing speed of the world's fastest supercomputer
from IBM at over 475 teraflops (or 475 trillion calculations per second).

What's more interesting is that the world's truly fastest supercomputer -
RIKEN's MDGrape-3 - will probably never be officially crowned with that title,
simply because it is so specialised that it can't run the software (the Linpack
benchmark) used to officially rank computing speed.

MDGrape-3 is the first machine to break the petaflop barrier - that is 1
quadrillion calculations per second - and is three times faster than the
currently-ranked
fastest computer in the world, IBM's BlueGene/L. IBM's BlueGene/P is soon
slated to achieve the petaflop distinction, though, with its machine nicknamed
'Roadrunner'.

"Getting to the petaflop stage is a Herculean task. It involves increasing the
processing speed by over 10 times, besides scaling-up in a non-linear fashion.
The efficiency falls as you add central processing units (CPUs). You require to
radically upgrade the architecture," says N Seetha Rama Krishna, project
manager of Computational Research Laboratories (CRL) - a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Tata Sons. The Tata supercomputer has been ranked the fourth most
powerful
in the world.

RIKEN developed the supercomputer along with Intel, and SGI in 2006 to carry
out molecular dynamics simulations. In developing drugs, pharmaceutical
companies
have to analyse thousands of chemical compounds to find out how they will
affect the protein-bonding structures in the human body.

What takes most computers hours or days to analyse takes MDGrape-3 a few
seconds. The functionality is invaluable in drug research since it can
drastically
cut research time involved in the development of new cures. A subsidiary of
pharmaceutical giant Merck has already booked time on the machine.

Construction of supercomputers is an expensive task. To get a machine from the
laboratory to the market may take several years.

In Tata's case, however, it was done in a record six weeks. The most recent
development costs of supercomputers varied between $150 and 500 million or more.

However, the Tata supercomputer cost around $30 million while the Riken one was
reportedly around just $9 million. That's partly because MDGrape-3 relies
on fewer chips and less circuitry than its competitors.

Besides, Hitachi, Intel, and SGI Japan supplied the hardware and absorbed part
of the cost of building the machine. One measure of the MDGrape-3's
ultra-efficient
computing muscle is its cost per gigaflop (1 billion floating-point
calculations per second), which Riken puts at $15. By comparison, BlueGene/L's
is $140
per gigaflop.

Also, while BlueGene/L contains a whopping 130,000 processors distributed over
65,000 nodes, Riken's closet-sized machine needs only 4,808 chips to achieve
four times its speed for certain applications. The Tata supercomputer used
15,000 processors over 2,000 nodes.

Using a supercomputer is expensive as well. As a user, you are charged
according to the time you use the system what is expressed in the number of
processor
(CPU) seconds your programme runs, says Krishna.

In the recent past, Cray (one of the first supercomputers) time was $1,000 per
hour. The use of this "Cray time" was a very common way to express computer
costs in time and dollars.

Meanwhile, the next generation of supercomputing - with DNA and Quantum
Computing - is already being talked about. Of course, it will take at least
another
decade before the new technologies will hit the work floor.

2007-11-16 Thread Syed Imran
Hi Vetrivel

This is a good configuration, but what is its price?
How long is the battery life?
I think Intel Pentium processor will do much better, but it's not that
important, you can get a good performance from Celeron also.

With best regards

It is very sad that forums like accessindia are also spreading piracy

of Indian low cost products. And in any case, this forum should not be used
for such purposes. I would request the moderators to ban such members who

I completely agree with Dipendra on this. We get what we deserve and the
reason we don't get any development of accessibility solutions in India
is because we think we can get away with stealing while someone else
does the hard work.
...or maybe we are so used to living off of charity that we believe
everything should be free for us just because we are disadvantaged in
some way.

I feel sad when piracy goes full swing even for low costing solutions.

We are left with no face to speak to any manufacturers to put up any
time
for developing solutions for us.

If we are so stingy in spending then why don't we simply shift to open
source domain where all solutions are available free of cost and we can
stop
living like thieves.

There is no windows for Indian Languages
There is no OCR in Indian language
There is no decent TTS for any Indian language.

This is the cost that we pay when we do piracy.

We complain that no one made SAPI compliant TTS. It takes 6 months of 4
programmers to make non SAPI TTS into a SAPi compliant one. If Prologix
decides to do it for us then we will make them to starv or force them to
close down their company due to losses.

We cannot scan any Indian language books. We all complain about this.
Why do
you think ABBYY would be interested to create a Indian language OCR? Do
you
think they will be able to recover their cost here?

Is Vachak so unaffordable?

Connect your ear phone with Mobile, start FM radio. Now, press key-1 that is
OK button, press the navigation down key 5 time and then press key-1 again.
Your Fm radio will be on loud speaker now!
Features of N70M and N72 are almost 95% same and both the instruments having
similar functions.

2007-11-16 Thread Dipendra manocha
I feel sad when piracy goes full swing even for low costing solutions.

We are left with no face to speak to any manufacturers to put up any time
for developing solutions for us.

If we are so stingy in spending then why don't we simply shift to open
source domain where all solutions are available free of cost and we can stop
living like thieves.

Do you
think they will be able to recover their cost here?

Is Vachak so unaffordable?

I completely agree with Dipendra on this. We get what we deserve and the
reason we don't get any development of accessibility solutions in India
is because we think we can get away with stealing while someone else
does the hard work.
...or maybe we are so used to living off of charity that we believe
everything should be free for us just because we are disadvantaged in
some way.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your views.

This is costing US $449+$31 tax. As for as the quality of the
processer is concern, Celeron processers are generally considered as
slow, but they have improved a lot. Although 1GB can be slow with
Vista, it is okay for the Vista home basic edition and one can always
expand the memory in future. I bought the system yesterday and so for
it is working great! Although I am yet to make configurational changes
to JAWS and let's how it works. Also the usage of flash disk as the
memory booster is something that I am going to try out and I already
have a 4GB flash disk and if it works well, then I'll allot it solely
for that purpose. Let's see how it works and I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks again.

Vetri.

2007-11-16 Thread Ramit Luthra
Oh, gosh!
I'm amaised with such views "Don't spread piracy".
I feel sorry for those people who are fooling themselves.
What does piracy mean? using something without being authorized for
such thing. Now, does this definition draw any line between "My
country's product" or "Other countries' product" or does it not
equally applicable on each and everything regardless of its cost
(whether cheap or expensive)? I just want to pos a simple Q to all of
us; are we not doing piracy in one way or the other? Pirated screen
readers, EBooks, OS, softwares... Too mutch pirated life we are
living. But when the table turns to us; when we're struck by this
sheer activity, we start railing against. At this moment, I remember
one of the Gandhi ji's teachings, Once a mother came to Gandi ji with
his sun. She told to him that her sun ate Gud too much and requested
him for the solution. Gandhi ji asked her to come to him after 15
days. The lady came again exactly after 15 days, Gandhi ji then told
his sun 'My sun, don't eat too much Gud, it's not good for health.'
The lady asked Gandhi ji 'You could tell the same even last time?'
Gandhi ji replied 'I could not because I also used to eat much Gud
till that time.'

Ideally I'm too against piracy. To me, crime is crime whether small or
big, less detrimental or greater destructive. But I think I cannot, or
for that matter, do not have the right to stop others for something
that I also do in one way or the other.

As far as why isn't the development regarding our indigenous needs
being taken place is concerned, what I have observed is that it's not
due to the lack of money, but due to the lack of commitment by those
people who are indulged in such projects. Every year, government/NGO's
spend milions for such development, but for what, an open source ml
editor/screen reader/TTS/IME/Dictionary with lot of errors and
unfriendly broken interface? Those who manage such projects, just pull
the development for next and next phase (unless the funds are being
stopped), fill their pockets, and ultimately, produce softDust which
remains only in the record files, on freely distributed CDs, but never
last for more than few days on systems for use.

Sorry for my blatant parlance. I was just expressing my views, not attacking.

I never heard a case wherein a company has become bankrupt due to piracy.
Though I am not the user of above mentioned application, developers of such

Prologix has already stopped working on this project. There is no further
work going on on this TTS since they have encurred heavy losses on this.
Work is suppose to resume only when they see any benefit in this.

Other thing is that companies who are not in business, we never come to know
about them or we do not talk about them any more

Re: [AI] Here's Your Diwali Gift!

2007-11-16 Thread Dipendra manocha
I have had many first hand experiences with companies while trying quality
products at affordable cost. The experience is very clearly indicate that we
are not able to project ourselves as any market. No one expects us to
purchase any thing even if the cost of product is affordable by all means.

Government agencies wor on project mode. Their project is to develop
prototype and not become selling agency for any product. They all expect a
commertial agency to pick up their developed product and do final production
and market and provide support services. I have not seen any commertial
company who has come forward to indulge in this activity and that is why
hundreds of very useful products and softwares are half cooked and are in
the shelves.

I have been negociating with many companies to give benefit to us. Talks has
been one of such examples. It ws due to hard work of 6 months that finally
india became the only country where talks is being sold at 1 third of its
international cost. Although it is being sold, actually it is being provided
at no profit basis since at this cost a commertial company will not be able
to sustain themselves.

Had TTS been a profitable business, prologix could have easily continued its
development and we could have got more human sounding hindi Voice.

It is beyond doubt that if company like Microsoft would have seen any
profitable market for Hindi version of the windows, the product would have
been with us long ago. Just reflect on this that windows Is in languages
like chinese, thai etc. but not in Hindi or any other indian language. We
all very well know that majority of our population feels comfortable working
in their own language.

I also know that company like IBM has a fully developed hindi language voice
recognition socftware. I have seen the demo myself and it is extremely
impressive. They were aggressively looking for marketting partners for it.
No one wants to invest in marketting of any software in India.

As number of users we are very big. But as market we are very small. Whole
of our IT industry works for over seas work because it is there they find
value for their work. If you would like to ask a team of developers to
create a quality product for us, what do we have to offer to them?

Earn money from some where else, make a product for us and make it available
free of cost from your web site. Any thing more expensive than that and we
have enough brains to crack it.

To my mind there can be only two development models:

1. become a market and let development agency get attracted to the market.
2. adopt open source business model. Where development is funded and then
community joins for its further development.

I saw many mails in admiration of Dr. T.V. Raman. But how many of us
actually subscribe to his approach for software development in open source
domain?

Also the question of e-text:
We can never get books when we want them unless we work with publishers. We
are not against them but would like to protect their right too. We would
like to work for our rights also which is to get the material not as hard
copy but in our accessible format. The e-text of braille or talking book
should reach only the persons with print disability. This is our duty to
protect the copy right owner of the work that we want access to. Unless we
indulge in fare play, we would not be able to get acces to books as our
right.

Hello Harish
Vchak with SAFA is fully stablised . Both versions of Vachak are working
with SAFA. Different keyboard layouts have also been introduced. SAFA is
freely downloadable with e-speak from nabdelhi web site. How ever, for
Vachak license the license fee needs to be paid.

Thus we are committed to provide combined support on SAFA and Vachak being
given along with SAFa.

Thanks
Dipendra
