 Hi friends,
I apologies for posting an off topic on the list but thought this is the
best option. A small little girl of 2 years in my close relatives is
extremely sick and requires AB negative blood. this group I understand is
very rare and the Cities blood banks don't seem to have them. So if any 1
of you are blood donors particularly from bangalore or know who can help
this child please contact me on my mobile at 9845942395. I hope AI members

 NEWS FROM MICROSOFT

Microsoft and the Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) Consortium
recently announced a joint development project that will make it possible
 for
computer users who are blind or print-disabled to gain access to more
written content by using assistive technology. This project will be a
 reference model
for other Open XML solution models. It will be available on SourceForge.net,
and will yield a free, downloadable plug-in for Microsoft Word that will
 enable
users to translate Open XML-based documents into DAISY XML, the standard for
reading and publishing navigable multimedia content. When it becomes
 available
in early 2008, the Save as DAISY feature will mean that people with print
disabilities will have better access to the information in billions of
 documents.

 AOL BECOMES ACCESSIBLE

AOL has recently launched a new web interface, Websuite Lite, which makes
the dynamic Web 2.0 interface accessible for users who are blind. The team
 that
designed the interface was led by Tom Wlodkowski, a blind man who
experienced the challenges Web 2.0 applications presented firsthand. To
 further enhance
web accessibility, AOL also released a new Javascript library that makes it
easier for web developers to implement accessible features with modern Web
 2.0 sites.

 VICTOR NOW PLAYS AUDIBLE

Victor Reader Stream, the pocket-sized portable MP3 player designed for
blind and low-vision people, now has the capability to play the popular
 Audible.com
books. The Audible format provides a huge additional choice of content to
users as Audible is the leading provider of spoken audio on the Internet,
 providing
over 140,000 hours of digital audio editions of books, newspapers and
magazines. For Audible books, the user will be able to navigate from one
 Audible
heading to the next, move by increments of one-, five-, or ten-minute time
jumps, and move with an accelerated fast-forward feature that announces the
amount of time lapsed. Current Victor Reader Stream users will need to
upgrade their player to software version 1.1 in order to play Audible books.

 the
Blind provided an additional $300 to sponsor my trip to the ACB national

 21
years ago, yet I remain most thankful for the award and the experiences it
brought me. I used the funds for tuition, textbooks and a large-print
 thermal

days before laptop computers. As a measure of gratitude, I would like to let
 ACB
members know what they got for their investment in my future.

I went on to graduate summa cum laude from Northwestern State University of
Louisiana in May 1989, earning a bachelor of arts in English. I then
 proceeded
to graduate school at Texas AM University at College Station, earning a
master of arts in English in August 1991. During my master's program, I
 developed
an interest in scientific and technical writing that augmented my original
goal of being an author and university administrator. In the second year of
my graduate program, I earned a split assistantship, continuing to teach one
class of freshman composition while also working as a technical writer in
the university's Supercomputer Center. This role defined the future course
 of my career. Better Communicators

In today's global work force, one cannot underestimate the value of clear,
precise communication. In the fall of 1991, I took a teaching position at
 the
College Station, Texas branch of Blinn College, the oldest community college
in Texas, which regularly prepares students for advancement to Texas AM and
other four-year institutions throughout the state. I taught courses in
freshman composition, introductory literature and technical writing. My
 department
head quickly discovered that I possessed an unusual gift for working with
international students, who often began their course work at the community
 college
level to improve their language skills before moving on to their advanced
degree programs. Between 1989 and 1995, I taught over 1,000 American and
 international
students to be better writers. Over the years, I have heard from many of my
former students who have taken what they learned and successfully applied it
 to their own careers.

Interestingly, throughout six years of teaching, I had only one student who
blatantly took advantage of my low vision. His own peers called his
 treachery
to my attention and made him apologize to me. Ironically, the culprit was a
physical therapy major studying to work with disabled people. I took him
 privately
into the hallway and encouraged him to evaluate more closely his career
choice. The rest of the semester passed uneventfully.

 A Safer World

In the summer of 1994, the head of Texas AM's Department of Nuclear
Engineering spotted me teaching a technical writing class and remembered me
 from the
Supercomputer Center. He was considering adding a technical writer to his
staff pending an upcoming large-scale research project. I took the position
 in
December 1994, although I continued to teach in the evenings for another
year. That research project turned out to be the Amarillo National Resource
 Center
for Plutonium (ANRCP), a program established by the U.S. Department of
Energy to look into options for disposing of excess weapons- grade plutonium
 from
the Cold War era. For the next three and a half years, I worked with
scientists from around the world as they investigated the best options for
 dealing
with the excess plutonium. My role involved everything from sending e-mail
reminders about technical meetings to preparing abstracts and progress
 reports
to serving as the technical editor of a full- length book containing the
proceedings of a NATO conference on nuclear waste management.

I also assisted professors in the department with their technical
publications by typesetting their equations, correcting their English and
 checking galley
proofs of their articles prior to final publication. I felt particularly

Subject: [AI] KNFB Mobile Reader

Hi all,

I really got excited to know about it, KNFB has developed software which can
be installed on N82 as it has 5 mega pixel camera. Although they only say it
works with N82, I think it should also work with N95.

I have yet not tried this software, and I am not sure about it's price, but
it's approximate price is 1500 dollars.

knfb Reading Technology, Inc. is pleased to announce the latest breakthrough
in print accessibility. We have developed software which places the
functionality
of a reading machine into a multifunction cell phone. The Mobile Reader
products can be activated and ready to use with the touch of a single button
on
the phone. The user takes a photo of the print to be read and the character
recognition software in conjunction with high quality text-to-speech will
read
the contents of the document aloud. At the same time, it can display the
print on the phone’s built-in screen and highlight each word as it is
spoken.

The Mobile Reader Product Line:
• Reads most printed documents, from letters and memos to pages in a book
• Reads address labels and package information and instructions
• Easily recognizes U.S. currency
• Displays each sentence visually and highlights each word as it is read
• Stores thousands of pages using easily obtainable flash memory
• Transfers text files to and from computers or Braille note takers
• Adjusts reading speed to suit user’s preference.

In addition, with the use of a screen reader, the user can access the other
functions of the phone device including making and receiving phone calls,
personal
information management such as contacts, calendar, etc. Also contains
ability to run accessible GPS programs, access to Adobe PDF files, voice
recorder,
music player and much more.

[AI] Another Internet cable damaged near Dubai; India is unaffected

2008-02-02 Thread Shadab Husain
Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: After the snapping of two undersea cables off the Egyptian
coast, another Internet cable, Falcon, owned by FLAG Telecom, has been
damaged in
the Middle East but Internet operations across India have remained unaffected.

Reliance Communications-owned FLAG Telecom reported the cut in the
Falcon cable, 56 km away from Dubai in the segment between UAE and
Oman, on Friday. However
industry sources say the damage will not affect Internet services
across India as the Falcon cable does not carry India-specific
traffic. The company said
it was arranging for restoration of circuits to customers covered
under a pre-planned restoration service.

Fifty-Sixty per cent of the capacity was affected following the
rupture on Wednesday night in the undersea cables, SEA-ME-WE 4 Cable
(SMW-4) and FLAG Cable,
which connect India to Western Europe, consequent to anchoring of
ships near Alexandria. However, all Internet links in the country were
restored on Friday
after service providers shifted their traffic to an alternative route.
It would take 10-12 days to repair the damaged cables and shift the
traffic back
to them.
In touch

The VSNL, Reliance and Bharti Airtel were in constant touch with
Telecom Egypt to ensure speedy repairs, the Department of Telecom said
after reviewing
the situation.
FICCI survey

According to the Federation of Indian Chamber Commerce and Industry
(FICCI), operations of several firms in the country for offshore
outsourcing are running
as usual. A quick survey by the FICCI among members of the Indian IT
and ITeS industry showed that a majority of the service providers felt
no impact of
the sudden disruption in the international undersea cables close to
Egypt's Alexandria coast.

Many of the companies, contacted by the FICCI, said there was no
substantial loss as they were using a robust technology and put in
place a redundancy plan
that allowed them to pick up extra bandwidth from multiple service
providers. While multiple routes of connection and tie-ups with
multiple service providers
saved the day for several companies, a few cases of severe work
restriction were also reported.

[AI] A ‘desi’ edge to expected Microsof t-Yahoo ‘sangam’

2008-02-02 Thread Shadab Husain
Anand Parthasarathy

Both players have strong Research and Development teams in India

— Photos: Anand Parthasarathy and Microsoft

TOWARD MERGER?: Yahoo co-founder David Filo talks to the media in
Bangalore during his last visit in 2007 and (right) researchers at the
Microsoft India
Development Centre in Hyderabad.

Bangalore: When news broke on Friday of Microsoft's Godfather-like
offer you can't refuse to the shareholders of Internet portal leader
Yahoo, there was
more than average interest in India's own Silicon City, which is home
to large research and development teams for both U.S.-based technology
entities.

Microsoft has the larger presence in India — some 5,000-strong — and
the software sultan has two key RD centres. The one in Bangalore is
home to Microsoft
Research, a hardcore forward-looking research team, led by P. Anandan,
which has strong links with academia. It also houses a separate team
that creates
and supports most of the Indian language initiatives of MSN —
Microsoft Network — the browser and search arm.

However, the larger team of engineers is to be found in Hyderabad,
where the Microsoft India Development Centre (MIDC) at Gachibowli, is
the company's biggest
product development group outside the United States. Headed by Srini
Koppulu, one of Microsoft's longest serving development executives,
the MIDC has been
key to the company moving many of its flagship Windows and Office
applications to the mobile phone.

Yahoo has just over 1,000 India-based engineers — and since 2007,
Stanford University scientist Prabhakar Raghavan, a recognised expert
on Web search technology,
and global head of Yahoo Research, has been guiding the efforts here.
Interestingly, India has bucked the trend and made Yahoo the most
popular e-mail
tool in the country.

The research group has created a number of local search and Indian
language tools even while helping to craft the recent OneSearch
mobile search tool,
launched worldwide. We just had to tap the great talent here, Yahoo
co-founder David Filo told The Hindu on his last visit to Bangalore in
2007.

This mega bid is of course an acknowledgement of Microsoft's failure
to monetise its online presence, and of the unshakable dominance of
Google, comments
Prasanto K. Roy, doyen of Indian technology editors and
Editor-in-Chief, CyberMedia Group Publications, in a communication to
The Hindu. He adds: It is
ironic that Microsoft of all companies is talking about the evils of
monopoly and one-player dominance, when it says that together with
Yahoo, it can offer
a credible alternative. The bid is a great thing for Yahoo, for even
if it does not take the offer; but chances are that it would, for it
will not easily
get a better offer.

If the deal goes through, there will inevitably be some overlaps in
the India-end of development activity, but based as it is on
much-wanted skills, one
need not expect that many engineers will be 'let go.'

I just came across an interesting article on TZP in today's Sunday

quite relevant for the discussion in this thread, the portions where
Deepa Bhatia and Amol Gupt talk about how the story was thought of and
from where it got inspirations are worth reading:

becoming apparent to the principle. The principle Elton Disuza,
couldn't bear a blind child ruining the esteem of the school. He told
my mother that I can only take exams in the school but to attend
 classes I was not allowed.

Talking that how the key members of the college coped with my
blindness is pointless when they were determined to chuck me off
 outright.

When a child goes to a school he feels that he has a deep emotional
touch with the teachers, friends and atmosphere of it.

Yes, I was becoming blind, but was it not inhuman for the college
administration to throw me out due to it?

I love many teachers of that school. My mam - Mrs Ireland who taught
me in nursery was the first person to sense my eye problem. I used to
bend a lot while writing and reading and this caught her eye. She
called up my mother and told her to take me to an ophthalmologist.

The principle, who still gives sermons of humanity deserves immense
shame for the inhuman behavior he did with a son of the college for
whom the world was already on the cusp of a strange change. I am
convinced that there are plenty of such crackpots existing in our
society, and, I am really looking forward to hearing a documentary
 criticizing them.

I didn't hear the movie, but it was realistic and this is enough.
Shall we go to the backwoods to find a person who, without being
 defective understands our grievances?

Had not the movie portrayed that the teacher too was dyslexic it would
have sent out a relatively wrong message. We should deeply appreciate
 such brainchild themes.

[AI] Episode 40 of Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan

2008-02-02 Thread Pranay Gadodia
Dear friends,
Apart from the content of episode 40, also note the change in our postal
address. Our new telephone numbers would soon be communicated.

In our episode 42, we bring you a talk with someone who is moving ahead in her
life, keeping her aspirations high, in a place where the support services are
not so good. Manju Lata Panda from Orissa, is doing her Ph.D and wants to go in
civil services later. Manju is blind since birth.

Friends, this week's profile is of a self-made man'. Wang Yongde of China, a
software developer, blind since his childhood, has a high level of self
motivation. Once again Charu Sharma the sports commentrator is here to tell us
more about Wang Yongde.

Now lets talk about adventure sports. Passion sees no boundaries. if you cannot
see but are passionate about mountaineering, blindness won't be a big deal for
you. Kanchan Gaba of Kolkata, who have won accolades in this sport, would tell
us all about mountaineering in this advice section.

So listen and also tell others about this information, inspiration and
entertainment packed radio show.

Episode 40 of Eyeway Yeh Hai Roshni Ka Karawan can be heard online at

www.eyeway.org/include/radio/radio.php. Here navigate down to the heading of

Friends,
I'm using Office xp in office with Jaws 6.0 The problem is JAWS is not
reading the line number. It is necessary for me as I have to take
print out of letters etc. Whenever I press insert delete jaws says
line -1 and the column number. Please let me know how to rectify this
problem.
thanks
