[AI] Enter, button-less MP3 player

2008-03-09 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Enter, button-less MP3 player

Anand Parthasarathy

Looks like a futuristic piece of drawing room decor; control depends on the
direction of push

Techno chameleon: The Aigo Omnisphere MP3 player has no buttons and changes
colour with volume and beat.

Bangalore: You can no longer tell an MP3 device by just looking at it. These
iconic music players come disguised as artifacts, table lamps - anything except
a boring piece of technology.

Aigo's Omnisphere F 529, a made-in-China offering that has just come to India,
looks like a futuristic piece of drawing room decor. a smooth and glowing
cone whose see-through head dances with colour with every change in volume and
tempo of the music it belts out.

Colours galore

They claim 4096 colour combinations - but we did not count! Clearly aimed at
the average untechnical dummies among us, it has no buttons: the top of the
cone can be swivelled - and acts as the play-select-stop control depending on
the direction you push.

Its shape makes its sound omni directional and the 5 Watts it produces is rich
and clear. The built-in 1 gigabyte of storage is good for about 500 songs
but at a pinch can be used as simple storage for files, videos or whatever: a
USB-type slot tucked away in the base, allows you to link to other devices
such as a PC or music system to exchange files, while a memory card slot allows
you to extend the built-in storage by a GB or two.

Distributed in India by BridgeOne Technologies, the Omnisphere costs Rs.5,200
and if you like a music player that will instantly become the first talking
point of every guest coming home, this might be something for you.

[AI] SKYPE IS NOT THE LIMIT

2008-03-09 Thread Vikas Kapoor
SKYPE IS NOT THE LIMIT

When Skype was introduced, it justifiably created a buzz. After all, there
weren't a lot of options to conduct a one-on-one voice chat. Then came the voice
feature on Yahoo, ICQ and MSN, but even as you were juggling with your contacts
on various messengers and not quite coping with typing, voice chat seemed
the obvious choice. While more and more people are joining Skype, a growing
number is also trying to get away from it for one or the other reason (too
many online contacts or just to try something new). For this growing tribe,
here are my three favourite alternatives.

Gizmo (gizmoproject.com): Like Skype, Gizmo offers unlimited PC-to-PC calls to
anyone with a Gizmo. It also enables you to remove other messengers and put
all the contacts into a single messenger. Features such as calling a regular
landline (also known as Skype Out) and mapping a number in the US or any other
country (Skype In) are also available. However, what's unique about Gizmo is
its All Plans Free scheme, which will help you make free PC-to phone calls.

Another feature which makes it score over the others is the provision of a free
call-in number from the US area code 775. So your phone number will begin
with 1-775 and your friends in the US can call you through their landlines even
if they don't have a Gizmo-all for free. To set up 775, however, you will
require a credit card. If you sign up for Gizmo, it will also give you 25 cents
(US$ 0.25) in credit to make outgoing calls. Currently, Gizmo does not
support video chat, but will do so in the next release. It works on Mac /
Windows and Linux and on cell phones with GPRS connectivity.

Open Wengo (openwengo.org): Wengo Phone also allows you to get rid of other
messengers and add your Yahoo/ MSN/ ICQ accounts here, and much like Skype and
Gizmo, you can make as many PC-to-PC calls. It also supports SIP and will let
you access your corporate IP PBX, if you have one.

A good option is its ability to hold an audio conference similar to a
conference call among multiple PC-to-PC call users. Wengo too supports PC-to-
phone
calls which are paid for, but does not have the incoming call facility yet. It
also scores over Wengo with its Video Chat, which is operational.

What I particularly like about Wengo is its relevance indicator in search. So
if you are trying to look up someone, chances are you will find the right
person. In its next release, Wengo will offer a Create your Own Directory
option, and if you own a company, you can create an internal directory of users
too. It works on Windows / Linux / Mac.

OoVoo (oovoo.com): If you are through with simple voice chat and audio

an account at Oovoo. Here, for free, you can video chat with up to five people
in real time. As you need a good bandwidth for multiple video conferencing,

you can send video messages to your contact list, put graphic effects and
emoticons in your video, send files, and move the entire bar to the side so that
you can video chat and work on a document simultaneously. If you sign up for

hi everyone,
Earlier i had learnt from a news channel regarding the offering of
jobs through emails. It is like they ask you to submit your resumes and
ask you to pay $1000 as a fee to process your visa and which would be
refunded. Once you join their firm.It is said that the emails would be
named from a reputed company but with fake address. These guys
generally pick up the email address of the people from websites
offering jobs according to the news channel. Just thought it would be
nice to inform Everyone about it.If anyone else has more details about
it and would like to share would be helpfull to one and all

Subject: [AI] another case of denial of banking facilities

Hi,
I hold a savings account with SBI since about 18 months now. Although I
did not have much problems opening the account but I have not been given
any facilities ATM or internet banking. A few days ago upon my request I
got the internet banking facility, it is not complete. At the beginning
I was informed that I will have even the transaction rites I later
discovered it was not true.
Now the branch manager claims he cannot give me transactions rites and
even viewing rites was something that I should not have got it. Although
he acknowledges the technology we use for internet banking, he is still
not willing to give me the transaction rites. Even after 2 months I'm
not able to do any online transaction and still I'm required to
personally go and draw money although the bank knows I operate a salary
account with another bank with all the facilities.

Circulars, requests and persuasion has gone unheeded and the only option
now left is to take it up with the higher authorities. Since SBI is a
party to the circular and being the # 2 largest nationalized bank in the
country, this attitude is very painful. Please let me know options to
bring this manager to book and get this problem resolved. To whom can I
write either in RBI or SBI to get it resolved.

Looking for your guidance in this regard.

With best regards,

[AI] Cicero

2008-03-09 Thread Piyush Pant
  Dear friends,
I had this useful information with me, it might interest you to receive this.
Cicero Text Reader Scans and converts printed documents to synthesised
speech and reads them aloud to you.
Cicero is useful to people, young and old, who are either visually impaired
or print impaired, whether technically comfortable or a complete beginner.
  Key Benefits:

Scan bills, letters and leaflets so you can convert the message into your
choice of speech, large print, or Braille.
Using a scanner, Cicero works simply by pressing a single button.
   Very accurate character recognition.
If you are a Supernova user, you will be able to integrate with v7 onwards.

Choose your own text and background colours to suit your vision
requirements.
Supports a large number of languages for scanning, reading and software
operation.
Full Braille support including Grade 2 where supported (EN, DE, NL).
Scanned documents can be outputted to your word processor for editing or
reading.
Save documents and letters so you can read them again later.
Supports any Twain compatible scanner so no special equipment required.
Self voicing, so no need for any additional reading software.

  From Scan to Speech
Cicero effectively takes your computer and scanner and turns them into a
reading machine for people with a visual impairment. Printed text documents are
placed on the scanner and can then be translated into speech, Braille or simply
held as a text document which can be adjusted, saved, edited and printed out.

  Independence
Whether at home or in the work environment, this means that your privacy does
not have to be compromised: you can read letters however and whenever you
choose without relying on other people. Independence is maintained and working
practices remain unaffected.

  Easy to use
Cicero starts talking automatically as soon as the page scan is complete. It
is fast, accurate, and easy to use and includes context sensitive help. Start
and stop speech instantly with a key press, or browse through a document using
the cursor keys. Cicero comes with full lifetime technical support by telephone
or email.

  Large Print and Braille
For those with low vision, Cicero allows you to view your document on screen
in large print. You can choose high contrast colours and select your preferred
font. Cicero also supports refreshable Braille displays, so that you can scan

[AI] Europe launches ATV

2008-03-09 Thread Rahul Gambhir
Europe launches ATV

Mar. 09

Europe's ATV has lifted off from French Guiana on a mission to resupply the
International Space Station.

The Automated Transfer Vehicle is the biggest and most complex spacecraft
Europe has ever tried to put in orbit. The 20-tonne unmanned cargo ship left the
Kourou spaceport, riding atop an Ariane 5 rocket.
Mission controllers will confirm a successful launch only after the ATV has
been ejected from the Ariane's upper-stage 66 minutes after lift-off. The ATV
is carrying just under five tonnes of food, water, air, fuel and equipment to
be passed over to the ISS during the course of a six-month attachment at
the orbiting platform. During that stay, the vehicle will also use its
thrusters to push the station higher into the sky to keep it from falling back
to
Earth.

[AI] Detective camera developed

2008-03-09 Thread Rahul Gambhir
Detective camera developed

Mar. 09

An Oxfordshire-based company has claimed to have developed a camera that can
see through people's clothing at a distance of up to 80 feet and help detect
weapons, drugs and explosives.

'The Sunday Times' reported in London, the new technology, has been developed
by ThruVision, spun out from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, one of the
British government's leading physics research centres.

Although the camera can see objects under clothes, its designers say the images
do not show anatomical details, the report said. The camera, known as the
T5000 system, could be deployed in railway stations, shopping centres and other
public spaces to abort terrorist attacks and it has attracted interest
from police forces, train companies and airport operations as well as
government agencies.
It was designed for use in spacecraft and astronomy but researchers soon
realised that cameras capable of seeing through clouds of cosmic dust could also
see through clothing.

[AI] Web-based messaging: new innovations

2008-03-09 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Web-based messaging: new innovations

SMS technology assumes significance in business promotions

This edition of NetSpeak features a few innovative on-line messaging tools.

Text SMS message has become common among mobile phone users for fast/cheap
communication.

As it is easy to send a message to several people in one shot, SMS technology
assumes significance even in business promotions and other social communication
needs.

Several free on-line services meant for sending SMS to mobile phones are in
place.

The web based SMS service offered by Indiarocks
(http://indyarocks.com/sms/index. php) is one among them. To use this service,
you need to register and
verify your mobile phone number.

Chikka messenger (
http://www.chikka.com/
) is another tool worth a try for sending SMS from your PC or web. If you do
not have a mobile phone number or do not wish to part with it, you could use
a service like Atrochatro (
http://www.atrochatro.com
 /send_free_sms_india.html).

One shortcoming of text SMS is that you can use it only with mobile phones -
not with traditional landline telephones.

Further, if voice messages could also be sent in addition to text messages, it
would certainly be more appealing. As such, this will accommodate landlines
too. In this context, the newly launched voice broadcasting service,
Msgforyou.com, proves useful. The advantage of this service is that you can
send an
audio message to a group of people at a specified time in one go. The service
allows you to create a list of telephones (mobile and landline), compose
a voice message to be sent to these telephones, and specify the time on which
the message is to be delivered.

Once the job is scheduled thus, the service automatically sends the message to
each of the telephones in the list at the specified time. On each of the
target telephones, the message arrives like a normal telephone call. When the
person at the receiving end picks up the receiver and responds, the service
automatically plays the recorded message. If the recipient wishes to hear the
message she/he can ask the service to repeat it.

One can find several use of this service. For instance, if a school wants to
pass on some urgent information to parents, they can just create an audio
message
and place it on the service to be sent to each of them.

To use the trial version of the service, access it (https://
www.msgforyou.com/alerts/

), go through the registration process, authenticate your mobile number and
log-in. As per this link (https://
www.msgforyou.com/alerts/docs/Contacts_1.htm

), a new user will get ten free calls.

Apart from voice messages, the service lets you send bulk voice SMS and text
SMS. To send a voice SMS, you just type in the message in text form and the
service will convert this text into voice prior to sending it.

Besides communicating with one's buddies, Googletalk lets you obtain
information from different sources - IM bots (http://www.hindu.
com/biz/2008/01/07/stories
/2008010750041500. htm) and the like. In fact, for many, gTalk has become an
important communication channel. If you have a blog or web site, you would
naturally be keen to get feedback from your visitors.

Rather than sending you an e-mail message, if the visitor can connect you via
gTalk, communication becomes instantaneous. Google talk's recently added
feature,
gTalk chatback badge, (
http://www.google.com/talk/service/badge/New
) helps you accomplish this. Once logged in to the above link, you will get a
page with the gTalk badge and HTML code to embed the badge on your blog. Once
the badge is embedded on the blog, anyone visiting it can start chatting with
you as 'guest', provided your gTalk is live.

In the past, this column featured several search tools that facilitate us find
the right information. 'Google hack: search explorer' (
http://www.newisearch.com/

), the new search service built on Google, is one such tool worth a try.

Alongside the familiar Google output, the service displays a set of related
keywords. You can use them to narrow down the output. Querycat
(http://querycat.com/),
the question/answer search engine, which claims to have more than five lakh
questions with answers, could be another useful search service.

Medical researchers may find the Querycat Health (http://querycat.com/health /)
resourceful.

All of us reap the benefits of the open source/free software movement that
continuously roll out a variety of programs. As mentioned in this column
earlier,
open source alternatives are available for almost all applications.

Several open source directories/repositories (like Sourceforge -
http://sourceforge.net/, Open Source Alternative - http://www. osalt. com/etc)
facilitate
finding the latest programs available on this realm. Winlibre (
http://www.winlibre.com/en/
) is another such place, where you can find open sources related news/programs.
Ostatic (http://ostatic.com/) is yet another source
