[AI] Now, it is railways!!!

2008-09-11 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Well, now it seems to be turn of Indian Railways, or to be particular, central
railway, to adopt much coveted discriminatory policy towards the totally blind
job aspirants.

No less than four totally aspirants are being shuffled like a cork between
officials and offices to get their rightfully deserved posting as Lower
division clerks in Pune and Mumbai divisions of central railway after duly
clearing written test and skill test.

I have come to know that 19 posts of LDC/Stenos were reserved for blind/low
vision candidates vide advertisement in may last year and final results of
which were declared sometime in June this year. despite receiving posting
letters calling them for medical fitness tests, these individuals have been
hauled up due to recalcitrant attitude of railway doctors who do not find them
fit due to total blindness for clerical posts. The case is said to be under
consideration of higher authorities, or at least this is what those candidates
have been orally told.

Now, Central list of identified jobs does contain the post of stenographer as
well as lower division clerk as identified for low vision as well as blind.
Appointing partially sighted candidates duly and keeping totally blind in
abeyance is not at all justified.

Moreover, who gave these bloody railway doctors the right to sit in judgment
over what the central government has duly thought fit to identify!!!

The less said about wisdom of our railway officers, the better it is!!!

I am more than confident about the fact that had the selection process involved
any element of personal interview, these hapless totally blinds would not have
made it to medical test also!!

It is high time that all of us should rise in unison with these foursome to
get justice for all the totally blind individuals.

I am loosing patience with these pig-headed fools called administrators.

I think we must meet highest officials in Central railways and give them a
deadline failing which we must take strong decisions.

I also appeal NAB employment wing to cooperate.

If they are not a part of this group, would anybody be kind enough to pass on
their contact information to me, for I don't visit the sites of NGO's

[AI] Parents making sense of 'teenglish'

2008-09-11 Thread prateek aggarwal
Parents making sense of 'teenglish'

LONDON: A British charity has launched a website on "teenglish" to
make parents understand the jargon their children use in normal
conversations.

The jargon-buster website,
www.Gotateenager.org.uk ,
contains almost a hundred definitions for words commonly used by
teenagers but until now incomprehensible
to their parents.

It is one way to make way for better communication between parents and
their teenage children, according to British charity Parentline Plus.

They spent months talking to parents and teenagers about the latest
slang before compiling the online dictionary of 96 words from bare -
meaning many -
to wagwaan, or what's going on?

with the Cyber Cell of Chennai Police against a service provider.

On Saturday, C Arul Mani Vasagam of MC Nagar got a text message in the
form of a missed call alert from his friend C M Balaji's mobile which
didn't make
much sense. This was the message: "I was trying to reach you. Please
call back. Looking for a house. SMS your query to 566778. Rs 3.'

Reading the message 'looking for the house', Arul got tensed. "I
thought that my friend was looking for a house, as he was in trouble.
When I called him,
he said he had not called me at that time and so there was no need for
the missed call alert," he said.

Arul fumed over this act of the service provider, Airtel , and alleged
that Airtel was intentionally tapping the frequently called numbers of
a subscriber
and using them to attract attention. "They make revenue by SMSing
advertisement of real estate companies. But it is illegal to use
consumer details without
his/her permission," he said.

Meanwhile, C M Balaji, in whose name the message was sent, said that
he had not made any call to Arul. "If the advertisement comes in the
service provider's
name, then consumers delete it, but he/ she reads it if it is from a
known number. This way even bomb hoaxes can be sent from our numbers,"
he said.

Venkatesh, an official in charge of Airtel's value added services said
that this is a "marketing strategy" of the company. "Customers will
receive such
alerts only if they have activated the missed call alert facility. The
complaints will be looked into," he said.

Meanwhile, telemarketing calls continue to haunt mobile phone users
despite the Supreme Court directing the introduction of a "call
registry" in place of
a do-not-call (DNC) registry.

"Some days back I received a call from a medical insurance company
pestering me to take a policy. They said that my oral agreement was
enough and they would
deduct money every month from by bank account," said T Sadagopan, a
consumer activist. He said that the insurance company knew details
about his credit
card. "When I asked them, they said that they had picked it randomly.
It is surprising that these people call even after activating the do
not disturb
facility," he said.

Cyber Cell officer S Charles said that the SMS case was under
investigation. "We have spoken to the service provider and we are
looking into the issue,"
he said. On the telemarketing call issue, he said that it was better
to give it in writing to the service provider and activate the do not
disturb facility.
"Giving a loan or an insurance based on oral agreement is wrong. We
have not received such complaints so far, but if we receive we can
help them out,"
he said.

[AI] He keeps wheels turning with eyes closed

2008-09-11 Thread prateek aggarwal
He keeps wheels turning with eyes closed -Ahmedabad
The Times of India

Dalpat Rathod lost his eyes when he was just 15. It had all begun with
a high fever accompanied by severe fits. His father, a daily wager,
had rushed him
to the hospital but by then the damage was done.

He was cured of the fever but could not see again. "It was like being
plunged into darkness. It was very depressing at first but I fought
back with help
of my parents," recounts Rathod.

The boy who used to love playing and cycling with his friends, was
suddenly staring into darkness. And, he had just begun the journey of
his life. His die-hard
attitude and determination to achieve self-sufficiency drove him
through this difficult period. The first break came when the owner of
a cycle-repair shop
in Shahpur, very close to his house, agreed to take him as an
apprentice in his shop.

"The last scene that I remember seeing with my eyes was my father
riding his cycle home from work. I cherish that sight and hold it
dear. I loved cycling
and it was only befitting that I take up this trade," said Rathod.
After 'graduating ' from the Shahpur shop, Rathod shifted to another
cycle repair shop
where he was paid much better. Every day, he travelled all the way
from Shahpur to Chandlodia.

It has been 30 years, since then. He had become one of the most
trusted workers and used to be entrusted even with the purchase of
cycle parts needed for
repair.

"I took three years to understand this trade. I can do all kinds of
cycle repair work, right from dismantling a cycle to repairing
punctures," said Rathod.
He got
married
later and has four children now. His cycle repairing skills helped him
earn a decent living.

Today he is 65. He has become quite well-known among cycle shops of
the walled city. They all fondly refer to him as Dalpat dada. Just
some months ago,
the shop at Chandlodia closed down and he started operating from home,
doing what he knows best - repairing cycles. Though his children are
married and
doing well for themselves he has not given up his favourite trade.

Re: [AI] How can a blind teachcomputer to a sighted person?

2008-09-11 Thread Zujar Kanchwala
Yes! that is certainly possible. I have trained sighted students at NIIT and
Datapro. In my earlier days of computing when I did not know about JAWS and was
hardly aware of the VI community, I adopted some screen settings like High
Contrast and boldface fonts or larger and boldface fonts for myself. Of course,
I had to go close to the screen when I used non high contrast appearance.

When it came to writing code snippets or performing Ms Office tasks, I used to
pick up a bright student from the batch to do things for me as per my
instructions. I also conducted online practical sessions where I dictated each
step to my students. They read out error messages or problems being faced
while performing those seps and I offered them solutions. I could manage both
theory and practical sessions well. I had 5 on 5 feedback from a number of my
batches and was one of the favourite faculties to both my students and the
management.

Hai all

Is there any software using which we can record and create audio file
in the system with the help of a head phone and mike. I mean our
speech should be directly recorded by the system instead of recording
in an ipod and then transfered to the system. If there is one, can
anyone send it to me. One of my friends requires it. Awaiting a reply.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-11 Thread Samuel Rodrigues
Talk to your BSNL customer care, if it is in bangalore the number is
18004241600 and also may be in some other places.
Also, there are 2 different cases, which I cannot guess,
One can check his usage through,
www.dataone.in
With his user id and password,
as well if he has the portal id it is
www.data.bsnl.in
as I have it.
But both cant have the same way, portal and Dataone user ID.
Either he may have portal or only Dataone user account.
So, it is better you check with your customer care of BSNL, and find out.
Check regularly, your total MB's used.
I do it regularly, and hence balance my limit.
Regards
Samuel

[AI] Box-sized solution to a towering problem

2008-09-11 Thread Mobile News
Box-sized solution to a towering problem

IIT professor invents device called Radiation Shield, for those living close to
cellphone towers, which reduces radiation levels in a room by at least 50
per cent

Kunal Guha

Prof Girish Kumar with the Radiation Shield. (Below) A cell phone tower on top
of a building
For those worried about the possible health hazards of radiation from cellphone
towers after the flood of media reports on the issue, an IIT professor
brings a small box of hope. Prof Girish Kumar from the Electrical Engineering
Department at IIT Bombay has invented a device called ‘Radiation Shield’,
which he says can absorb electro-magnetic radiation (transmitted from nearby
cellphone towers) when placed anywhere in a room.

A study reported by this paper a couple of months ago measured dangerously high
levels of electromagnetic radiation from cellphone towers at several key
spots in the city.

Kumar’s invention, that looks like a video cassette box standing vertically, is
said to reduce radiation levels by at least 50 per cent when placed anywhere
in the room. Kumar says, “People don’t understand how cellphone radiation
damages one’s health. That’s because one cannot see, feel or smell it and it
is a slow killer.”

Kumar’s Radiation Shield is a passive device that has multiple antennas that
absorb radiation from all directions and dump it into the load inside the
unit. The frequency range that this device is capable of absorbing is between
800 megahertz and 4000 megahertz and has a tested efficiency of 90 per cent.

According to Kumar’s study, people residing 50 metres from any cell tower are
exposed to a million times stronger signal than required for normal cellphone
usage. Kumar says, “Each cellphone tower is required to span an area of several
kilometres, so the radiation blast is maximum within a 100-metre radius
around each tower. People residing in this field unknowingly become potential
victims of the radiation onslaught.”

Countries like the United States and UK have regulation against having cell
towers within 50 metres from any residential area. India presently has 1.5
lakh cellphone towers and another two lakh towers are planned in the next two
years. And given the densely-populated metros here, it is easy to imagine
how many people live within the deadly radiation zone.

Author of Broadband Microstrip Antennas, Kumar has been working in the field of
antennas for the last 30 years. Kumar admits that he is not a medical
professional
and is not an expert on the biological effects of radiation. But the thermal
aspect of radiation is entirely his sphere. He explains, “Radiation transmitted
from cellphone towers is similar to that of microwave energy. So, just like a
microwave first heats liquids in food items kept inside it, radiation is
also attracted to liquids and the human body comprises 70 per cent liquid.”

The thermal effects of radiation are said to be most pronounced in areas in the
body that have stagnant liquids like eyes, arms, shoulders, thighs etc.
And easy targets of this deadly wave would be children and pregnant women who
have a higher volume of liquid in their body than others.

Kumar believes that two of his Radiation Shields when placed in a room of 150
square feet would effectively control the radiation level. Kumar plans to
retail this device for Rs 1,449 and will extend a 5-year warrantee with each
piece.

For more details on the radiation shield go to

uh,, virus warnings?

its just a way to shutdown 1 extra process, and have to do nothing
with your anty virus definitions.
+, i've tryed it ( useing avast home edition as anty virus, ) and,
this process relates to no other process too, and since no other
process is depended on it, its safe to shutdown it.

But it looks it has changed, these days,
Since I receive my extra usage bill, every month.
Even I dont over use it, I get a bill receipt with the amount 0 on it.
I live in Karnataka, and I am on 500 combo+ and I get it that way.

I haven't followed this thread. But with BSNL, it may also happen that they
have sent you a consolidated bill for extra usage over a period of time and
not for the last month. When I used to have a BSNL broadband connection in
Hyderabad, they would send me one huge bill for extra usage once in 6 or 8
months.

Kiran.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-11 Thread Subramani L
Yes, you seem to be right, because the largest amount was given under
the heading "debits" and not "downloads". This is the most ridiculous
way of billing a person because I would have paid this one bit by bit in
a matter of few months now paying it as a huge amount would drain my
finances badly.

Subject: [AI] shutdown extra process and save more primary memory.

good evening accessindia!

i've been out of city, and that gave me an opportunity to work on a
very low configuration systemm, with limited ram.

after doing some research, i've found out that, at most of computers
running windows xp or vista, there is 1 process which is rairly used,
and it eats up around 6 mb of your ram.

the process is named ctfmon.exe, and can be seen after hitting alt +
ctrl + del and ctrl + tab to processes tab.

i'm here including a review from howtogeek website, to shutdown this
unused process.

Ctfmon is the Microsoft process that controls Alternative User Input
and the Office Language bar. It's how you can control the computer via
speech or a
pen tablet, or using the onscreen keyboard inputs for asian languages.

If you are using any of the above, you should leave it enabled. For
everybody else, we'll get to the job of disabling this annoying
service.

image

Depending on your system configuration, there are a number of
different steps to disable it. I've tried to list all the methods
below.

Step 1: Disabling in Microsoft Office 2003

We can remove the alternative text input from Microsoft Office 2003 by
just removing that feature in the setup.

Note: I haven't figured out where the equivalent setting is for Office
2007 (if there is one), but we can also disable it a different way
below.

Go to Add/Remove programs, choose to Change your installation of
Microsoft Office and make sure you check the box for "Choose advanced
customization of
applications" before you hit next.

image

Find "Alternative User Input" in the list and change the dropdown to
"Not available" so it looks like this:

image

Step 2a: Disabling in Windows XP

There's an additional step we can take to make sure it gets turned off
in Windows XP, which really seems to be the best answer for XP users.

Open up Control Panel and choose Regional and Language Options.

image

Choose the Languages tab and then click on Details in the top section.

image

Now on the Advanced tab you can choose to "Turn off advanced text
services", which should immediately close ctfmon.

image

You'll also want to take a look at the first Settings tab, and make
sure that your "Installed Services" box looks similar to this one:

image

If you have more than one Installed service then ctfmon might come
back... For instance on my system there was an input for my drawing
tablet so I could use
it as a text input... which I don't care about, so I clicked Remove on
it.

Step 2b: Disabling in Windows Vista

The setting above for completely disabling text services doesn't seem
to exist in Windows Vista as far as I can tell, but we can remove the
additional input
services using a similar method.

Open Control Panel, choose Regional and Language Options and then find
"Change keyboards or other input methods".

image

On the Keyboards and Languages tab, you can select Change keyboards.

image

Now you'll finally be at the same screen as in Windows XP. You'll
again want to remove the extra installed services in the list other
than your default
keyboard language.

image

Step 3: Remove From Startup

You won't want to perform this step before doing the others, because
it will just be overwritten again. Open up msconfig.exe through the
start menu run
or search box, and then find the Startup tab.

image

Find ctfmon in the list and disable it by unchecking the box. Just
remember that if you haven't disabled ctfmon through one of the other
settings this won't
help you a lot.

Step 4: If all else fails

You can just completely unregister the dlls that run the alternative
input services by running these two commands from the run box (one at
a time)

block quote
Regsvr32.exe /u msimtf.dll

Regsvr32.exe /u msctf.dll

block quote end

If you perform this step, you should also use Step 3 to get rid of the
startup entries.

Step 5: Reboot

Reboot your computer and then open a Microsoft Office application if
you do have that installed. Verify that ctfmon.exe is not running.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-11 Thread Vamshi. G
Hai

I would like to know how to check our consumption details. When we
visit the website Harish sir has mentioned,
1. We log in by ID and password.
2. Click on view usage
3. Select the month for which we want to view the usage details.
Till then it's ok. But after that, Jaws doesn't say anything.
Previously I was copying the data on the screen, pasting it to MS word
and then going through it. Surprisingly, I'm not able to do this in
the recent past. Kindly guide me how can I do that in an easier way.

Thanks in anticipation

2008-09-11 Thread Shadab Husain
hi sir, good afternoon.

I recollect that in one of your letters you stated that you reside in an
area where Airtel won't be able to reach.

if this is the case, then I must tell you that I inquired about Airtell and
I gathered that they give wireless connectivity. caring about weather would
die off. they will come and fix the modem at your place, although it would
be slightly expensive comparing with the BSNL one. please rethink or am
afraid that you might come in a soup.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-11 Thread Kiran Kaja
I haven't followed this thread. But with BSNL, it may also happen that they
have sent you a consolidated bill for extra usage over a period of time and
not for the last month. When I used to have a BSNL broadband connection in
Hyderabad, they would send me one huge bill for extra usage once in 6 or 8
months.

Regards,
Kiran.

Re: [AI] BSNL unlimited download

2008-09-11 Thread Subramani L
Hai Harish:

I shall certainly do that. Tell me one more thing; is there a way
someone would have hacked my account and used it? I think like this
because --let me be candid about the bill amount-- I have got a bill for
Rs 6,270, which is far too high for what I have used. Someone in the
group had pointed out that even in the case of limited download, one can
download upto 2.5 GB. In my recollection post the discussion in the
list, I am sure I haven't downloaded more than 1 GB or may be slightly
above that. In the wake of this, do you think I should guard myself
against those who hack into broadband accounts and use them? Is there a
technology to do that? Kindly help.

Re: [AI] sharing softwares at AI convention

2008-09-11 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
I have just downloaded jaws 10 public beta.
In particular, I wish to have sangeeta TTS and hindi demo of jaws.
If anybody could be kind enough to upload them on sendspace or so, I would be
obliged.

Regards

Rajesh

Subject: [AI] sharing softwares at AI convention

May I request all participants of AI convention to bring with them such of the
softwares/utilities which they think are useful to VI persons and which may be
lawfully shared.

Such recent things in my opinion, include: demo of Hindi jaws, JAWS 10 public
beta, Real speak sangeeta TTS offered by FS with JAWS 10, etc.

I am putting in a special request for it as it is quite difficult/time
consuming to download through internet or they are not available online, and
they may be legally shared at the convention through pen drives or so!!

Any other things fulfilling above criteria may also be suggested.

Active cooperation of members is requested for this endeavor.

Regards

Rajesh

How to know whether a file is an image file which has extension .pdf. Is
there any way for a blind to find it out?

Which OCR would recognize pdf image files in an understandable
manner. I have tried finereader 8 with despair.

Only way I have found useful for knowing the contents of such pdf
image files is to convert them in hard copy by printing and scanning
 them afresh.

 Any guidance, please.

 Rajesh
