Assuming that you are accessing GMail in the Basic HTML mode, you
will notice that there is a form at the end of the message for
replying. Just go to the end of the current message and you will see
something like quick reply. There is also a button for more reply

[AI] (no subject)

2009-02-05 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi all,

Some of us may find the below book interesting.

xFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Blind Woman Launches New Year With New Book About College Experiences

Columbia, SC. January 13, 2009 -- Professional counselor and author Carmella
Broome, who has been legally blind since birth, begins the new year by
launching her first book. Carmella's Quest: Taking on College Sight Unseen
chronicles the author's first year at North Greenville University (formerly
North Greenville College) in upstate South Carolina. The book is published
by, and available through, Red Letter Press of Columbia SC. Throughout the
twenty-six chapters (276 pages) of this straight-forward memoir, Carmella
describes her efforts to adjust to college life and academics, friendships
and romantic relationships, struggles with accepting her visual limitations,
and other experiences that took place during the 1994-1995 academic year.

Carmella, who lives in the Columbia SC area, says this book has been a work
in progress since the summer of 1995. While she's had a few articles and
essays published during the past few years, the author says she felt unable
to give this bigger writing project the time and attention it deserved. I'd
put it down for months at a time but always came back to it, she says. I
knew I wanted it published one day and that I'd know when the time was
right. I knew I'd rather take longer and truly feel that the book was the
best it could be than to be in a hurry to publish.

For the next ten years, Carmella was busy completing academic and
professional goals. Once my career was on solid footing, I was ready to get
back to the book, she says. In early 2007, Carmella's driver mentioned
seeing an article about a local publishing company called Red Letter press
run by USC writing instructor and author Bob Lamb in a local newspaper. I
contacted Bob and he offered me a contract, Carmella says. We began
working together, along with several other talented design and editing
people Bob recruited, for the final leg of the journey to publication.

Carmella looks forward to introducing Carmella's Quest to as many potential
readers as possible. She has already set up a Carmella's Quest email account
just for book related correspondence and created a blog on livejournal. She
has planned a launch party, and will be scheduling book signings, readings,
and other venues for promoting her first book. This is new territory for
me, she admits, But I'm excited about sharing something I'm proud of with
readers who will hopefully appreciate and enjoy it.

Carmella says she loves public speaking. In the past, she has done programs
that included describing important events in her life mixed with performing
songs that went along with themes of the presentation. Maybe I'll start
singing publicly again, too, she says. Who knows? I'm eager to see what
kinds of opportunities will come about for me once the book is out.

Wherever she goes to promote Carmella's Quest, her guide dog, a yellow
Labrador retriever named Maggie, will be by Carmella's side. She's very
cute, Carmella says, I'm sure she'll convince at least a few people to buy
a book.

Red Letter Press titles are available at select bookstores, on Amazon.com,
and directly from Red Letter Press, 6148 Rutledge Hill, Columbia, SC 29209.
The publisher can also be contacted by emailing redletterpr...@gmail.com

Hollow Sir,
Let me thank you for sharing important and valuable information on railway
reservation.

may I submit the following few questions for clarification?
1. Do the orthopedically handicapped claim concision in handicapped higher
class concision?
2. Do the visually challenged claim for escort in handicapped higher class
concision?
3. Why not the advocacy groups try for three percent reservation for persons
with disabilities in railway reservations?
4. Do you suggest any source for better understanding of the railway and air
reservations for the differently abled?

Thanks in anticipation.

Friends

I am not at all amazed at the utter confusion prevailing about various
facilities to disabled in Indian railways.

So, following points are offered to clarify the matter:

1. Blind concession and HP quota are two different things: blind
concession is available in first and second AC. at rate of 50% and is
called handicapped higher class concession, and in third AC and sleeper
class at the rate of 75% for both self and escort on production of valid
railway concession certificate, and is called blind lower class
concession. HP quota is a quota of two berths available only in sleeper
class to the disabled persons including blind. Due to its terminology it
is arbitrarily denied to blind travelers as rightly pointed out. they
interpret the word handicapped as meaning only orthopedically disabled.
So, we should insist on uniform nomenclature. Besides, a blind person can
get concession in any class, and even berth in HP quota in sleeper class
without escort unlike orthopedically disabled.
2. The handicapped or disabled coach is an altogether different coach of
four berths attached at the extremities of wrack with a lot of lacunae, as
said.
3. However, recently, railways is further confusing the matters by
extending the scope of hp quota even to reserve those four berths in
disabled coach, whereby two undesired things result:
a. the person getting berths in hp quota may get them in regular sleeper
class or in disabled coach. and
b. the status of that disabled coach is reserved as well as ordinary,
which results in chaos.

4. All this is in addition to arbitrariness which reservation clerks and
supervisors indulge in, because any wrong issue of concession tickets is
penalized by recovering the differential amount from their salary. And all
this is again in addition to indiscriminate entry into disabled coach by
all and sundry and greed of GRP AND RPF in expelling them at the precise
moment of departure of train.

Situation is slightly better in south, I think.

It is very much available to VI, and is called: HP quota.
The arbitrary denial can well be countered by compelling them-railway
rank

and file-to enter the data in the system for booking and selecting hp
quota.
The system accepts it duly. However, I am afraid if they are not willing
to key in the data in system, a blind person single handedly can not
prevail upon them to do so, practically speaking and the issue should be
taken up at higher levels of the concerned station by advocacy groups and
awareness spread.

One more thing is there is no information abailable regarding hp quota on

Dear Rajesh sir

The situation is worse in south.
I once had to travel with nearly 15 normal persons in the 8 ceater
disability coach making journey of disabled difficult with problems
while boarding, getting down, going to toilets etc.
Another point I would like to stress upon is that the coach is placed
either at the end of the train or just behind the engine.
Once I asked a station master at Tirupati railway station to tell me
whether it comes at the end or behind the engine in an incoming train.
The poor man didn't want to tell because I would have to run the full
length of the train in it's five minute halt if he was proved wrong.
Also placing the disability coach at the extremes makes facilities on
the platform inaccessible for the passengers.

[AI] Query, governments subsidy to the employers who hire physically challenged

2009-02-05 Thread Vishal Jain
Hello friends,
If you remember, during the last budget there was an announcement that
the employers who hire physically challenged candidates will get
subsidies from the government.
Can somebody put more light upon the policy?

1. What kind of employers and job profiles are eligible for it (public
sector, private sector or both)?
2. to what extend is the subsidy provided?
3. Whom should the employer approach to avail the benefit of the policy?
4. Where can I get more information on it (any resource links)?

Thanks in advance.

[AI] Blood Clot: PLEASE READ AND KEEP ON PASSING IT AROUND!! (H J Ashok)

2009-02-05 Thread ashok

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to
post it and spread the word. I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple,
we could save some folks. Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall,
she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered
to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped
over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of
food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went
about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his
wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6 :00 pm Ingrid
passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ.
Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke,
perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die,
they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim
within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a
stroke... totally . He said the trick was getting a stroke
recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient
medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the
'3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The
stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when
people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke
by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks,
call 999/911 immediately and describe the
symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke --- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person
to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked',
if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an
indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this
e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that
at least one life will be saved.

Re: [AI] information required about reservation of tickets in trains

2009-02-05 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Hello Janardan

Here are my answers to your queries:
1. Do the orthopedically handicapped claim concision in handicapped higher
class concision?
R: Yes, they can.
2. Do the visually challenged claim for escort in handicapped higher class
concision?
R: Yes, they can, but it is not necessary unlike orthopedically disabled.
3. Why not the advocacy groups try for three percent reservation for persons
with disabilities in railway reservations?
R: I think you mean that berths in HP quota should be increased, for reserveing
three % berths for persons with disabilities is not called for, as at any point
of time such number of PWDs do not travel in trains, and this three percent
results from confusing reservation in jobs and other schemes with railway
reservation which is an altogether different concept.
4. Do you suggest any source for better understanding of the railway and air
reservations for the differently abled?
R: None to my mind, besides a piece of 2007 which I found on their website and
which I had posted to accessindia, will send it if you require.

[AI] Board exam jitters: disabled students can call special helplines

2009-02-05 Thread Asudani, Rajesh

Hindu news update service:
Board exam jitters: disabled students can call special helplines

New Delhi (IANS): Special children have special needs. So for the first time
the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has designated educators to
answer the queries of disabled students who are taking the crucial Class 10 and
Class 12 board exams.

Four special educators figure in the list of 43 counsellors who will help
students and parents overcome anxiety and stress during the board exams, which
often prove nerve-wracking for students. This year the exams begin March 2.

Realising the specific needs of specially-abled children taking the board
exams for Class 10 and Class 12, for the first time we have included special
educators to take care of them, Rama Sharma, CBSE public relations officer,
told IANS.

Like all the counsellors, the special educators are available online as well as
on telephone from centres located in Mumbai and Delhi from Feb 1 to April
2. However, most queries are expected to start coming in about 15 days before
the exams begin.

Parents and children with special needs can call the number and get all their
problems and doubts related to board exams cleared, Sharma said.

M.R. Shipley, a special educator in Mumbai, said counselling specially-abled
children requires a lot of patience and love.

I empathise with them and try to step into their shoes to make them understand
how to overcome problems during exams. I tell them nothing is wrong with
them and try to boost their confidence so that the child is not under kind of
pressure or demoralised, said Shipley.

She is a counsellor with the Apeejay chain of schools and a CBSE resource
person for the Adolescent Education Programme.

The special educators are more polite while dealing with disabled children,
they also try to talk to the parents and explain the facilities provided by
the CBSE to such children.

The CBSE offers exemptions to physically challenged, spastic and dyslexic
candidates taking the month-long board exams.

Concessions to physically challenged and dyslexic students are in the form of
extra time - they have 60 more minutes to write the exam, a writer in the
board exam and flexibility in subject choice at secondary level, said Heetal
Sayla, a CBSE special educator.

Sayla, who had worked with the Learning Disability clinic of the Lokmanya Tilak
Municipal General Hospital, Mumbai, said: For me, it will be a new experience
as I am catering to the CBSE helpline for the first time.

These kids should be looked up with love and patience and encouraged. I know
many specially-abled students who perform quite well in their exams after
counselling.

The CBSE has also given special training to teachers for marking criteria for
such children in board exams.

Another counsellor, Abha Sharma, said specially-abled kids are really vocal and
there is a need to understand their strong abilities.

It is difficult to completely understand the children in tele-counselling. At
times you need to talk to both the parents and children to make things easier
for them, said Sharma.

The helplines are Abha Sharma, Mumbai, 9967800337, M.R Shipley, Mumbai,
9833950896, Hetal Sayla, Mumbai, 9819209623, and Shweta Khanna, Delhi,
9717882074.

The online address to get queries resolved is www.cbse.nic.in.

Last year, 1.31 million children appeared for the Class 10 and Class 12 board
exams. Of them, students with special needs made up 0.17 percent.

Hello,

There is a jaws-based utility called hotspot clicker. It can make programme
interfaces accessible to some extent. Give it a try. Search for it on
google. I can send it to you also. It is about 436 kb. I never tried it
though. I downloaded it following a discussion on the jaws-users mailing
list.

Subject: [AI] Accessibility of other softwares

 Dear All,

I work in civil / mechanical engineering areas. There are some
engineering applications for which we require to use commercial CAD
packages. How we can make these softwares readable (like for Word or
PowerPoint, JAWS helps) ? Is there any scripting that we have to do in
these softwares, or in JAWS, so that JAWS can help in using them ?
 Kindly inform me.

Thanking you and with best regards,

Don't remember the exact steps but if you go to Access India subscription
page and there should be something like forgot password and password
reminder wherein if you give your email address that's used for
subscription, mail man will send you the password. Otherwise, generally, you
would receive an email from Owner on 1st of every month and in the mail
below, you should have password.

Hope this helps.

[AI] Fw: Most Urgent, from Javed Abidi

2009-02-05 Thread Pamnani

I am forwarding Javed Abidi's email first and then my mail with all the
details.
Kanchan

- Original Message -
From: Secretariat
To: kanchanpamn...@hotmail.com

Dear Kanchan,

Greetings from NCPEDP!

I am sure you are aware that India has ratified the UNCRPD which in its Article
9, recognizes access to Information and Communication as a right for persons
with disabilities to enable them to enjoy their fundamental freedoms. You are
also aware that the IT industry in India is growing at a jet setting pace.
However, despite the fact that India is racing along the so called Information
Highway, persons with disabilities are once again being left behind!! India is
home to the world's largest number of visually impaired people and yet nearly
99.99% of Indian websites are not accessible to them. Websites in India are
still not disabled friendly even though the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
came out with detailed guidelines on the subject several years ago!

We took up this issue with NASSCOM on November 7, 2008 at a meeting with its
Chairman, Mr. Som Mittal. He assured us that he would ensure that necessary
steps would be taken in order to correct this; starting with them getting their
own website accessible!! He also mentioned the upcoming NASSCOM National
Leadership Forum, 2009. We wrote a letter to him on January 7, 2009 requesting
for time at the summit which would enable us to bring up the issue with a
larger audience; a reminder was sent as well. But there has been no response to
date despite following up with numerous phone calls. We would not have been so
upset and angry if they had regretted and told us of their inability to
accommodate us, but to not even acknowledge is downright unacceptable. Some of
you may think that we are making a mountain out of a molehill, but let's not
forget that this is an issue which should have been addressed years ago.

I am sure you will agree that it is an issue that cannot be neglected any
further. Don't these IT wizards know that web accessibility is mandated in the
civilized world? They design disabled friendly websites for their western
clients but conveniently forget about access when it comes to India!

It is time that we got tough. I am writing this to some of you based in Mumbai
and making an appeal for a dharna. The Forum is from 11th to 13th February and
the dharna needs to be done only on Day I of the Forum, outside the Hotel where
it is being held – Grand Hyatt. It would be a peaceful dharna marking our
protest at a place that the police / hotel allocate us. But it has to ensure
visibility and our protest must be registered. Whatever the outcome, protest we
must.

I request you to endorse this idea and lend your support. I trust that you will
revert to me by return mail or as soon as possible.

With best regards,

Javed Abidi

03.02.2009

My dear Accessindians

I had on sunday called upon all accessindians in Mumbai to get in touch. A lot
of you did and I am touched with the response. After all it is Accessindians
who are being affected the most.

You have realised the importance of web accessibility and how we are being
treated or should I say ignored. Based on the response we have received from
you we have decided to go ahead with the Dharna. all out efforts are being made
to make the Dharna successful. Other disability groups will join us. We will
just be holding placards and banner, maybe a little slogan shouting, some press
interviews etc.

A lot of you told me to include people from Pune. Yes Punites and all others
are also welcome.Mumbaites you have to show your strength. We will also need
some sighted volunteers. I would request each of you to call and let me know if
you will come. We need to do this for ourselves. How long will someone else
fight our battles.

Most of you who know me will be surprised that I am taking this route for this
cause but we have tried my regular route of explaining the problem to the
topmost person but to no avail. Therefore the Dharna route will gain us
visibility and some consideration.

Please call me on 9821013644

The Dharna is planned for 11th Feb between 10am and 1pm outside the grand Hyatt
, Santacruz East.

Thanks

Kanchan

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I
agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.
Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall, she assured everyone
that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just
tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a
bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to
the hospital - (at 6 :00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at
the BBQ.
Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be
with us today. Some don't die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition
instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can
totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally . He said the trick was
getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically
cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the
'3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may
suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of
a stroke .

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
(Coherently) i.e. It is sunny out today) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately
and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke --- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his
tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that
is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you
can bet that at least one life will be saved.
?
?

H J Ashok

Hi!
I would like to notice 2 more things. Some times partly blind persons face
problem in getting concession in railway fare dispite of having valid
concession certificate authorised by medical official.
One more thing is there is no information abailable regarding hp quota on
railway call centre (139). So that we have to look on the internet
compelsarily.

2. The handicapped or disabled coach is an altogether different coach of
four berths attached at the extremities of wrack with a lot of lacunae,
as

said.

And
all

this is again in addition to indiscriminate entry into disabled coach by
all and sundry and greed of GRP AND RPF in expelling them at the precise
moment of departure of train.
Situation is slightly better in south, I think.

there are also many problems in this coach for the disabled. 1 there is
no

railway official to take care of the passengers travelling in this coach.
2
the coach is totally disconnected from all other compartments that is
there
is no vestibule to move from one compartment to another. 3 no connection
with the pantry car. 4 more importantly at the max only 8 passengers
along

to highlight the real condition of the coach. so please think about this

take these maters also to the higher officials in the railways and ask

It is very much available to VI, and is called: HP quota.
The arbitrary denial can well be countered by compelling them-railway
rank
and file-to enter the data in the system for booking and selecting hp
quota.
The system accepts it duly. However, I am afraid if they are not willing
to key in the data in system, a blind person single handedly can not
