Hi Sir,

Thanks for your excellent reply.

Well, I too feel that the language of the newspapers should be easy so that
everyone could understand it. But, there's a wide gap between easy language
and poor language. For example, if a newspaper is erring while using 'ex'
and 'former', 'quit' and 'quitted', 'formulas' and 'formulae', 'murder' and
'manslaughter' and so on, then it is a newspaper which has poor language. I
too make mistakes - but spotting them in the newspapers is very bad.

I mentioned this here because I was afraid that I am being miscued. I am
sorry if I skirted from the topic.

Re: [AI] Some doubts with Sendspace.

2009-02-28 Thread Sameer

Dear Friend,

If you have a free account with Send Space, you can upload only one file at
a time. This file can be a zipped folder. The only restriction is that the
size of the uploaded file/ folder should be less than or equal to 300 MB.

You can upload multiple files on Send Space by uploading the second file
after completing the upload of the first file. There is no problem if the
combined file/ folder size exceeds 300 MB so long as the size of each
individual upload is within the 300 MB limit.

Hello list members:
I have some doubts regarding the use of sendspace tool.
I've registered with
www.sendspace.com
and downloaded it's tool for windows and installed successfully on my
Pc's. So can u clarify a few things here to be clarified.
1. How to upload the files from here?
2. what does it mean when it says "You can upload the file of up to
300 MB", that means can we upload many zipped files of below 300 MB?
or we have to upload only of 300MB at a time. I mean when we zip some
files together in a folder, it becomes one file. Like that can we
upload many files like that? or we have to upload only one file at a
time.
Regards,
Govind.

Re: [AI] How to uplode file?

2009-02-28 Thread Vijay Kumar P.V.S.
Hi Vamsi:

Regarding your first question, you can know the status by pressing the
Insert + B. you can also use Jaws curser for this task. I’m sorry that
I don’t know the answer to your second question. Regarding your third
question, after uploading the file, you can do the modifications by
logging in to the Send Space website and click on the desired file. I
think the exports in our list may give better alternative solutions to
your questions.

[AI] question on Gmail's settings page

2009-02-28 Thread l pavan
hello list members warm greetings to all of you!
i came to know
google is providing many features for its Gmail users.
for example using Gmail offline, showing our location in mails that we send
and many more.
but the problem here is that we can activate all these features by
visiting settings page and clicking labs link which is a tabbed link.
i tryed to do this many times but failed to do so.
i did not find such link on settings page of Gmail' website.
therefor i request list members to throw some light on it.
i posed this question few days back but there was no response.
with regards.

Can any one provide me the recent NCRT books as soft copies? I
personally believe that they are one of the good means for competative
exams. All the books I have belong to around mostly before 2004.

[AI] Researchers to help deaf 'hear'

2009-02-28 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu News Update Service

News Update Service
Saturday, February 28, 2009 : 1635 Hrs

Sci. & Tech.
Researchers to help deaf 'hear'

Washington (IANS): Researchers are working on tactile devices that can help the
deaf to 'hear' -- through vibrations.

Tactile devices translate sound waves into vibrations that allow the user to
distinguish between vibratory patterns associated with different sound
frequencies.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Sensory
Communication Group are working on a new generation of such devices.

This will help the deaf to get the nuances of speech that cannot be gleaned
from lip reading.

Certain consonants like 'p' and 'b' are nearly impossible to distinguish by lip
reading alone.

This could be an important tool for deaf people who rely on lip reading and
cannot use or afford cochlear implants.

The cost of the device and the surgery make cochlear implants prohibitive for
many, especially in the developing countries.

Re: [AI] One doubt regarding the newspapers in india.

2009-02-28 Thread Shadab Husain
Hi, please click 'New Dehli' on www.hindu.com you will get the news of
Delhi. On www.thetimesofindia.com click 'World' for international news,
'India' for national news, 'Opinion' for editorials and news analyses and
'Cities' for the regional editions. On www.hindustantimes.com click 'Views'
and then see the heading levels. You will find editorials and news analyses.
Under the third heading, there would be a link 'More headings' - click it to
read all the news analyses.

Hope that helps,

Hello, I'm reading only Hindu newspaper. It's very easy to read and find the
pages I want to read. But only the problem with this newspaper is it's more
prone to South India particularly Chennai. Actually I tried some other
newspaper like Times Of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express ETC but
couldn't read them. I couldn't find the pages like front page, National, New
Delhi, opinion ETC. Now I want to know what's the right way to read them.
How can I find the afore mentioned pages? Thanks.

Hi Vijay

I have got a few doubts in using the send space wizard.
1. How to know the status of the upload?
2. When we upload in the web site, by checking a check box, the link
will be sent to our mail ID. Is it possible if we use the wizard?
3. How to write the Recipient's mail ID and description?
Awaiting guidance.

other problem stops the file from opening. Hindi fonts also are not

Hi Vamshi,
One good suggestion is to try to upload and send yourself a file -- by
this, I mean typing out your own email address. Soon, you'll get two emails
in your Inbox
telling you that you've uploaded a file and the second email telling you
that there's a file awaiting to be downloaded.

2009-02-28 Thread harish

Hello Vidya

Isn't blindness a disablility? I guess, this is a first conference in a
series of it. Maybe in the future, they shall have greater representation
from other disabilities. In any case they too should be getting a right
place in terms of accomodation at the univercities.

Finally, they too should take a lead to seek appropriate accomodation.

Re: [AI] Two-day National Conference on'DisabilityandDisenchantment:New Challenges and Evolving directions'

2009-02-28 Thread Amarjit Powar

Hello Harish bhai,
Something related or perhaps unrelated to your statement of below.
Blindness in Alberta, Canada, is not, yes, not considered a disability
anymore since the late mid 90's for applying for disability pensions. The
government says that blindness is just a nuisance and not a disability as
such. The blind, as we all know it today and even considering
majority of AccessIndians , can very well function in office-related jobs
using modern software e.g. TTS, OCRs etc. One can perform clerical,
accounting, programming, etc. etc. jobs using these technologies. I recall
that the Albertan Government had removed some 1200 or 1800 blind people from
its disability payroll and got them enrolled in call centre jobs in the late
mid 90s when JAWS gained more popularity and the government started
subsidizing its purchase. So, we have to be politically correct as to who is
a disabled and what disability means.
Sorry as this does not matter much to AccessIndians, but just
wanted to add my two cents worth.

I think you guys should have used the term "blindness" rather than
"disability". I fail to see other disabilities being represented here.

Hi list.
we, JNU visually challenged forum did indeed wanted to give out the
invite
earlier, but since it is a national seminar organized at the level of
an

institution like JNU, it took us lot more time to put things in place.
hope you understand and appriciate thesituation. we at least those
people

who are based in Delhi can make it to the seminar.
your participation is most valued.

2009-02-28 Thread Mahesh Panicker
Hi Vidya and others.
I don't think I can agree with your view of the seminar being only concerned
with the visually challenged. if you go through the schedule, you can see
that other than the last session, no other session is VC spesific. this is a
seminar where we are thinking of bringing together, the activist and the
policy maker maker, with the larger academic community. there has to be a
better linkage between policy and theory. in the field of
higher education, disability as such has not been theorized enough, and that
is reflected in the policy making process.
this national seminar is jointly organized by the office of equal
opportunities; JNU, and the JNU visually challenged forum. therefore there
will be some emphasis on the visually challenged, but in the larger scheme
this is a seminar on disability in general, not on the visually challenged.
we hope to see AI members in good numbers, at least those people in around
Delhi.

2009-02-28 Thread Viraj
On the contrary, what the seminar represents is disability at large, and not
visual impairment in particular. This is quite clear through the
themes/topics as well as through the list of presenters given in the
schedule. One does not see any title that narrowly represents any particular
disability (visual or other). The purpose evidently is to view disability in
totality and in conjunction with other instances of social exclution as
well.
