[AI] FW: IHT.com Article: For the blind, technology does what a guide dog can't

2009-06-04 Thread mukesh jain
For the blind, technology does what a guide dog can't By Miguel Helft The
New York Times Sunday, January 4, 2009

T. V. Raman was a bookish child who developed a love of math and puzzles at
an early age.

That passion didn't change after glaucoma took his eyesight at the age of
14. What changed is the role that technology and his own innovations played
in helping him pursue his interests.

A native of India, Raman went from relying on volunteers to read him
textbooks at a top technical university there to leading a largely
autonomous life in Silicon Valley, where he is a highly respected computer
scientist and an engineer at Google.

Along the way, Raman built a series of tools to help him take advantage of
objects or technologies that were not designed with blind users in mind.
They ranged from a Rubik's Cube covered in Braille to a software program
that can take complex mathematical formulas and read them aloud, which
became the subject of his Ph.D. dissertation at Cornell. He also built a
version of Google's search service tailored for blind users.

Raman, 43, is now working to modify the latest technological gadget that he
says could make life easier for blind people: a touch-screen phone.

"What Raman does is amazing," said Paul Schroeder, vice president for
programs and policy at the American Foundation for the Blind, which conducts
research on technology that can help visually impaired people. "He is a
leading thinker on accessibility issues, and his capacity to design and
alter technology to meet his needs is unique."

Some of Raman's innovations may help make electronic gadgets and Web
services more user-friendly for everyone. Instead of asking how something
should work if a person cannot see, he says he prefers to ask, "How should
something work when the user is not looking at the screen?"

Such systems could prove useful for drivers or anyone else who could benefit
from eyes-free access to a phone. They could also appeal to aging baby
boomers with fading vision who want to keep using technology they've come to
depend on.

Raman's approach reflects a recognition that many innovations designed
primarily for people with disabilities have benefited the broader public,
said Larry Goldberg, who oversees the National Center for Accessible Media
at WGBH, the public broadcasting station in Boston. They include curb cuts
for wheelchairs, captions for television broadcasts and optical
character-recognition technology, which was fine-tuned to create software
that could read printed books aloud and is now used in many computer
applications, he said.

With no buttons to guide the fingers on its glassy surface, the touch-screen
cellphone may seem a particularly daunting challenge. But Raman said that
with the right tweaks, touch-screen phones many of which already come
equipped with GPS technology and a compass could help blind people navigate
the world.

"How much of a leap of faith does it take for you to realize that your phone
could say, 'Walk straight and within 200 feet you'll get to the intersection
of X and Y,' " Raman said. "This is entirely doable."

ADVOCATES for the blind have long complained that technology companies have
done a generally poor job of making their products accessible. The Web,
while opening many opportunities for blind people, is still riddled with
obstacles. And sophisticated screen-reader software, which turns documents
and Web pages into synthesized speech, can cost more than $1,000. Even with
a screen reader, many sites are hard to navigate.

Last year, the National Federation of the Blind reached a settlement of a
landmark class-action lawsuit against one company whose site advocates found
unusable, Target. In the settlement, the retailer agreed to make its Web
site accessible to blind people. The federation assesses the usability of
Web sites and currently certifies only a handful as being fully accessible.

One challenge is that technology often evolves much faster than the
guidelines that ensure Web sites work well with screen readers. In December,
the World Wide Web Consortium, an Internet standards group, released Version
2.0 of its accessibility guidelines for Web sites. The previous version
dated back to 1999, when the Web consisted largely of static Web pages
rather than interactive applications.

Obstacles on the Web take many forms. A common one is the Captcha, a
security feature consisting of a string of distorted letters and numbers
that users are supposed to read and retype before they register for a new
service or send e-mail. Few Web sites offer audio Captchas.

Some pages are just poorly designed, like e-commerce sites where the
"checkout" button is an image that isn't labeled so screen readers can find
it.

"The overwhelming percentage of the industry really hasn't stepped up to the
plate to provide the blindness community with equal access to their
products," said Eric Bridges, director of advocacy and governmental affairs
at the American Council of the Blind

2009-06-04 Thread ruchir falodiya
greetings rajesh sir and all accessindians.

for me, the podcast just downloads fine, but i do use a download
manager, getright for that purpose so it mite be possible that its not
working for you.

i'm not sure if the server's link is for streaming the audio content
directly or download, but either way, i think we can save the file.

just let the file fully downloaded to be opened, and when it opens in
your media player, pause the file, and then from file menu, select the
option called " save as." save the file as mp3, at your specified
location.

i hope this should store the file permanently on your hard drive.

if this doesn't works, try downloading using firefox or some download
manager which handles the file ftp requests in a better way then IE.

with warm regards,

ruchir.

[AI] twitter - all about it.

2009-06-04 Thread ruchir falodiya
i've been using this very popular micro blogging social networking
site since last 3 months, and i've found it quite interesting so
thought i'd share this with you all.

its called twitter.

introduction taken from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter
what is twitter

Twitter is a free social networking
 and
micro-blogging
service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates
known as tweets. Tweets are
text-based
posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the user's profile page
and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as
followers). Senders
can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by
default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive
tweets via the Twitter
website,
Short Message Service (SMS)
or external applications. The service is free to use over the
Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

Since its creation in 2006 by
Jack Dorsey
, Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It
is sometimes described as the "SMS of the
Internet,"

my personal experience with twitter:

due to various features, for example, images, video, extensive
profiles, and zillion of options 1 would normally never uses, i've not
liked social networking sites in particular.

that may be because of its nested complex interface, extra and
unwanted features, or need of opening the website to use all the time,
and my busy schedule, all added up to me, creating accounts everywhere
and hardly ever using them.

i'm on orkut, facebook, myspace, and there are a few i even don't remember.

what makes twitter better from my prospective is its simplicity.

it just asks you 1 very simple question, " what are you doing?" and
expects your answer to be precise with in the limits of 140
characters.

there's no file shareing, fans, communities, and you don't need
website window opened always to use it.

you make a account at twitter, start following peoples, and whenever
you post something, peoples who are following you can see your
message.

interface is simple, and then we have bunch of applications to use --
on your computer as well onn your mobile phone if you have
internet/gprs activated on your mobile.

to elaborate it further, here are few audio podcasts you can try to
better understand and use twitter :

[AI] fw: newsworthyaudio has been enhanced for the visually impaired persons

2009-06-04 Thread mukesh jain
hullo, i am forwarding this message for your kind information.
although i have not tested this site but thinking that it may interest
you.
A couple of months ago we announced NewsworthyAudio.com (
www.newsworthyaudio.com)
a personal audio newspaper site. Many of you in the visually impaired
community were kind enough to test it out and give us some very good
ideas on how
to improve the site for the visually impaired. We recently released a
new version of NewsworthyAudio.com that improves usability for those
using screen
readers.

We are hoping you might give it a try.

To refresh, NewsworthyAudio subscribers tell us the types of news
stories in which they are interested. We find the full-length
newspaper stories that
match those interests and deliver them as high-quality personalized
podcasts to each subscriber.

Subscribers can personalize over a dozen categories of news, pick from
hundreds of pre-built news podcasts we build for major newspapers, or
create their
own custom podcasts. Subscribers can also listen to full-length
newspaper stories online.

All free!!

We hope this service will be of benefit to you. We are particulalry
indebted to those who provided us with insight and ideas on how to

Re: [AI] telescopic cane

2009-06-04 Thread Kiran Kaja
Well, the telescopic cane is what it really says, telescopic. Unlike the
folding canes, the different pieces of a telescopic cane, go inside the
pieces above it. This is more or less similar to the telescopic antena that
we find short wave or medium wave radios. The bottom piece of a telescopic
cane is the narrowest and the top one is the widest.

Kiran

[AI] IT resource and training centre for the VI in Delhi

2009-06-04 Thread sachu ramalingam
The Oldest Eye Hospital of the City Launches a New Initiative - ‘Ujagar’
it’s IT Resource and Training Center for the Visually Impaired & Low Vision
Persons!

Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, established in 1914 and having the
distinction of being the oldest eye care institute of the city, takes a new
initiative to empower the visually impaired persons by launching its unique
IT Resource and Training Centre for the Visually Impaired and Low Vision
Persons on 27th March 2009.

With more than 2 million blind and low vision persons in the country and
with very few centres to provide training in information technology for
them, importance of the initiative taken by Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye
Hospital cannot be undermined.

Through this resource and training centre, education and employment oriented
training skills including computers, communication skills, interview-giving
skills etc will be provided to visually impaired persons in order to make
them a part of the inclusive society. The project is funded by Adobe India
and Charities Aid Foundation.

According to Mr. A. K. Arora, CEO, Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, “our
strategy is just not to provide medical intervention, but rather, ensure an
overall development of the visually impaired persons. This project will go a
long way in achieving this end.”
Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital has been providing comprehensive
rehabilitation services for the blind and low vision persons through its
Vision Rehabilitation and Enhancement Center in New Delhi for more than
eight years and Community Based Rehabilitation in Alwar District of
Rajasthan under the able leadership of Ms. Sachu Ramalingam, Consultant,
Vision Rehabilitation Services. According to Ms Ramalingam, “To ensure
availability of latest training and technology is important if the visually
impaired need to be equipped to meet the new challenges of the job market
and that is what we are facilitating!”

This first of its kind initiative will not only function as a IT training
facility but will also be a resource centre for the visually challenged,
where any visually challenged person can become a member and use the latest
technology such as the KNFB reader available here for reading print
materials or convert print into accessible formats. The IT training is
provided with the help of speech and magnifying software in English and
Hindi, especially designed for helping persons with visual problems, to
master computer skills. These software, once mastered, can to a large
extent, remove the reading and writing handicap of those who cannot see.
‘Ujagar’ will be providing short term and long term courses at a nominal fee
to all visually impaired persons, who have the basic required qualifications
to enable employability or to pursue education.

Dr. Umang Mathur, Medical Director of the hospital adds, “If the visually
impaired persons need to be truly empowered, it is important to expose and
train them in the use of latest technology.”

Hi every one!

Visually impaired who set their sights on success By *Soudhriti Bhabani *|
04 June 2009 | 9:10am

Kolkata, June 4 (IANS) Mohammad Asif Iqbal, 30, went door-to-door to enlist
in a private tutorial before appearing in a management entrance exam, but
was refused every time. Reason: he was visually impaired. But Iqbal finally
cracked the entrance test on his own.

Kolkata, June 4 (IANS) Mohammad Asif Iqbal, 30, went door-to-door to
enlist in a private tutorial before appearing in a management entrance exam,
but was refused every time. Reason: he was visually impaired. But Iqbal
finally cracked the entrance test on his own.

Iqbal, now working as a senior consultant in an MNC firm after passing out
from a prominent private MBA institute in Pune, is not the only one who
succeeded. There are many who rose above the social impediment and succeeded
in different walks of life.

People like Dilip Loyalka, a chartered accountant by profession, Ashish Jha,
an IT security specialist working in an MNC software firm, and Vikram
Dalmia, a successful entrepreneur, faced similar hurdles and proved
themselves winners.

'We're as able as anybody else in society,' Loyalka said.

It was an interactive seminar, jointly organised by the trade body
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Welfare Society for the Blind,
where people with disabilities (PWD) came and shared their experience of
life and especially their struggle to combat day-to-day odds.

'We (the visually impaired citizens) don't want sympathy from people but
we're looking for opportunities to prove our ability to work and perform
like any normal man,' Iqbal said.

According to the 2001 census, there are over 21 million people in India -
equivalent to 2.1 percent of the population - who are suffering from one or
the other kind of disability.

Among all types of disability, visual impairment is the most prevalent,
contributing almost 48.5 percent of the total figure.

India has a law, Persons with Disabilities Act, that focuses on equal
opportunities and protection of rights for persons with disabilities. India
recently ratified the UN convention to promote and protect the rights of
PWDs (persons with disabilities).

'But the nation has hardly been successful in integrating people with
disabilities into the mainstream. So, it is essential to create awareness
about the role of technology in empowering people with disabilities,' a CII
official said.

She said the CII would also conduct a survey to find out the position of
PWDs in India and how they are placed in the industry with regard to proper
job facilities.

Phishing Attempts Made on Microsoft Outlook Users

http://www.techtree.com/India/News/Phishing_Attempts_Made_on_Microsoft_Outlook_Users/551-102831-582.html

Techtree News Staff, Jun 04, 2009 1813 hrs IST

The phishing message carries an email address with name Support

Phishing attacks have often been launched on the social networking sites
Facebook
, Myspace and number of others. Now, the hackers have started
launching phishing attacks to email accounts. Sarah Calaunan, fraud
analyst at security solution
provider Trend Micro,
wrote
 on the company's official
blog
that phishing attacks targeting Microsoft Outlook were reported.

The new phishing attack targets Microsoft Outlook users by sending
them alert to re-configure their Outlook. On clicking, the user is
lead to a phishing
site with name Microsoft.com with something in prefix where in his
login credentials are asked. This is dangerous since the phishing
message carries an
email address with name Support and thus, many users might fall for the trap.

Do not fall for such traps and in case you find any message in your
Micrsooft Outlook folder, delete it immediately.

The attack will only be successful when user commits the mistake of
entering his login credentials on the phishing site. Later, the hacker
would be able
to steal critical information.

When you have more than 1 hardisk then, you can have one as master and the

It also helps in copying from 1 hd to the other.

Harish sir,
The pen drive is read properly on other systems. It is just that this
compact laptop does not read.
I am not sure about the drive light glowing, but no CD is read..none at all.
What is the difference between a slave drive and a master drive?
Asking the service station to replace the HCL laptop will not work. It
is already out of warrantee. But if it is on full charge and if I
don’t use it for a day or two, it generally retains its full charge.
So there is no problem on that front.
Will wait to hear from you.

Hi Renuka

Certainly with that residual vision, one can go for these courses. One need
to be proactive as well. I guess, NAB Delhi is running courses in
networking.

[AI] about Dr. Jitender aggarwal

2009-06-04 Thread sarthak edu
Dear friends
Hello
I am a dental surgeon by profession.
I completed my dentistry in 1998.
I practiced for six years then my visual impairment happened.
After my visual impairment, this was end of the road for me.
My friend told me that a VI can operate the computer. He took me to
NAB rk puram by their help I learnt the art of computer.
Then I learnt the art of medical transcription. I worked from home as
a medical transcriptionist.
Then I thought of spreading this knowledge to other VI. So I roam around India.
There are only three centers in India. One is in Mumbai, Chennai and banglore.
In the month of April, I visited banglore center. It was excellent.
Their first batch student has already been placed in the companies.
By the help of enable India we are starting sarthak medical
transcription for VI in Delhi. I think in and around north India there
is no mtvi center.
Enable India especially Shanti ma’am is supporting this programme.
Medical transcription companies will be involving in the training
process from first day onwards so employment is not a problem.
I hope you can tell about this programme to everyone who is dedicated to do it.
If you want any information you can contact us at 9718711463.
You can send your queries on sarthak...@gmail.com.

[AI] what is medical transcription programme

2009-06-04 Thread sarthak edu
MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION PROGRAMME

 Dear Medical Transcription Student:

Welcome to the exciting and vitally important career of medical
transcription. I hope that you will maintain an eager interest and
excitement about your course of study. Soon, you will begin to
experience the fascination and appreciation for medicine that working
medical transcriptionists have come to enjoy. Because medicine is ever
changing and because people and their problems are never boring, I can
assure you that you will be always learning and interested in your
work.

Medical transcription is both an exacting science and an artistic
accomplishment. It is important to have a combination of skills
including spelling, proofreading, knowledge of medical terminology,
and typing and a firm background in English grammar, structure, and
style. The successful medical transcriptionist has both accuracy and
speed: a broad knowledge of anatomy; and a thorough knowledge of
medical, surgical, drug, and laboratory terms, in addition, it is
important to know how to use standard medical and nonmedical reference
materials.

An exciting career as a medical transcriptionist awaits you.

AN INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION

First, let me introduce you to medical transcription and medical
transcriptionists. You will notice that I use the term
“transcriptionist.” A transcriber is the machine, which plays a
dictated report through our headset so that we may transcribe it. It
is not the person who transcribes.

If there’s one thing that transcriptionist are known for, it is our
love for words. This is a common thread in our profession. It is
what gives a kinship, and it one of the things that make us
professionals.

If I were cast away on a desert island, the book I would probably want
to take with me is an unabridged English dictionary, and I could be
happy for years. Transcriptionist can get lost in a dictionary. We
look up a word and we see something else that looks interesting, and
then we look up another word, and so on. Words are truly exciting. I
would much rather have a dozen new medical words all researched and
defined that a 5-pound box of candy. I hope that you too will come to
share this feeling.

THE SPIRIT OF MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION

Medical transcriptionists are very special people. We are workers who
sign our initials on each finished product; we are craftspersons in a
modern age, we are practitioners of communication, we are the
magicians of medical terminology, the masters of grammar and
punctuation, and our expertise flows through related areas such as
pharmacology and sophisticated new instruments from the operating
room.

We are in key position as a member of the healthcare team, we break
the sound barrier every day, and we are the trained ears who create
sense out of many diverse accents and sometimes just plain nonsense.
We have a surgical precision all our own, a knifelike wit at times,
and our own scalpel-sharp intelligence, we have that attention to
detail, that sparkle, that scintillating compulsion to look things up,
did the patient see a neurologist or a urologist? We look it up in the
patient’s chart. What is the patient’s middle initial, proper name,
zip code, area code? There are crazy days when every second word is a
spelling nightmare, like pipe fitter, Albuquerque, Quonset hut,
vis-à-vis. Hand me the dictionary, please, every day is like a
treasure hunt in an ocean of words. Education, books, words-we want to
know everything. We also have sensitivity, humor, a sense of
responsibility and ethics, and most importantly, we have excellence,
we are professional serving the healthcare consumer-the patient.

Medical transcriptionists know more about a patient than anyone else
the physician. We wade through gallons of urinalysis and rivers of
blood samples, and we know the chemical state of patients as well as
the most intimate details of their social history. Marching across our
view each day are life and death, struggle with disease, social
problems, and sometimes, thank goodness, human comedy. When we
transcribe a birth record, we breathe a silent “welcome on board” to
the new arrival, when a discharge summary becomes a death summary,
often we are saddened, no matter how old the patient, we have heard it
all and transcribed it all-the blood, the pain, the surprising
recoveries, the agonizing losses, the inexplicable reversals, the
courage, the toughness, the incredible human body’s ability to take
punishment, from the blood test to the barium enema, from chemotherapy
to colostomy, we see the whole picture, form the incompreshensive
patient names to patients from strange-sounding places-geopolitical
smudges on maps we never glanced at until recently.

Why do we care? Why this magnificent mania for learning and
excellence? One reason is that we have sympathy-for the sick, for the
elderly, for the patient who cannot speak English, for everyone put on
hold too often and too long and forced to listen to canned, tinny

[AI] DRISHTI, For The Blind

2009-06-04 Thread mukesh jain
Drishti, an interactive personal navigation system, developed at the
University of Florida, could someday guide the blind through corridors
and along busy city sidewalks.
The heart of the system is wearable computer about the size of a
thick paper-back book, witch is worn on the user’s waist, runs Windows
98 and is voice-controlled with an interface that uses IBM’S Via Voice
software. the computer is connected to a Global Positioning System
[GPS] receiver carried on the user’s back, witch keeps track of the
latitude and longitude.
As the user navigates the route given by the computer, the system
compares data from the GPS receiver with data from the GIS
[geographical information system] to define the route and warn if the
user is off the course or even away from the centre of the
sidewalk.
When the user gives the voice commands to ask for directions, the
system responds with verbal instruction giving distances in feet and
providing corrective guidance along the way.
  Refreshable Electronic Braille Sheet
Researchers at the University of Tokyo have fabricated a flexible,
shock-resistant, lightweight Braille Sheet Display on an extremely
fine plastic film. The effective display size is 4X4 centimeters. Each
character consists of a 3X2 array of Braille dots, and the total
number of dots is 144. thus, 24 characters [four lines of six] can be
displayed at a time. The total thickness of the device is 1
millimeter, and the weight is 5.3 grams. The researchers predict the
sheet will make it possible to produce pocket-sized Braille electronic
book.
thanks,
