That's indeed correct. Upgrades are available only for the new SMA. In other words, one will not be able to avail an upgrade for an upgrade. One can find this out by right clicking the JAWS icon and then about. JAWS will announce whether one is eligible for future upgrades or not. [AI] ect:re: Indian Blind Cricket League- The First Call
Dear George Sir, Its a great news indeed!! I still cherish the fond memories of the first national cricket tournament for the Blind which you had organised in december 1990. I am one of the proud participants of that tournament in which I represented St. Louis Institute for the Deaf and the Blind, Chennai. It was titled as the Tata Steel Challenge tournament which was won by NIVH, Dehra Dun. The Late Mr. Madhav Rao Sindia inaugurated the tournament. The most important highlight of the inaugural ceremony was the great Kapil Dev who was one of the chief guests could not make it due to some reasons. We were disappointed very much. However, soon after we reached our rooms, there was call from the organisers asking all of us to assemble again. Yes! this time there was a surprise awaiting for us. Kapil Dev had arrived by then. He spent sometime with us. Apart from the tournament we enjoyed every moment of our stay because of your wonderful organising skills. In the finals, NIVH defeated BMA, Ahmedabad. Of course, BMA has later been renamed as BPA,.] The Late Prime Minister, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi was the chief guest for the finals and he gave away the prizes. Anand Sharma of NIVH was the Man of the Tournament. In fact, some of the best players of that tournament and the subsequent ones remained as our favourite heroes. I remember some of those names: Kamal Patel, Vasant Patel, Anand Sharma, Vima Narayana, Mahesh, Harikrishnan, and so on. Well, these are some of my contemporary players. I had participated in the first three national championships held in New Delhi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Of course, Blind Cricket has improved a lot and has brought in a number of laurals for our country in the last ten years. I am sure that this new initiative you are taking would give more champions among us. I wish you all the best! Hai, I can not say that jaws supports quickheal fully, but it works well. Actually, the interface of quickheal itself is not complicated. It is a button based interface. I have no problems using it, and I like it. I suggest you to try the demo version of 30 days and then decide whether to purchase or not. Do let me know when you are installing the software. Formatting is not the solution but an easy escape to the problem, learn to use the system in a more updated manner. Use good antivirus if you can afford to pay for the subscription or use freeware antivirus and keep an eye on latest development and freeware issues to prevent attacks. Grab tricks and tweaks to protect your system from known issues, do not try just anything but trusted software. Before downloading and installing check the reviews of the software. Use pen drive but make sure you scan it with multiple programs and should delete anything unwanted. [AI] Off-topic, Dealing with Swine Flue
Hello all I am allowing this posting, considering its relevance. No more traffic on this please. Harish Kotian Paracetamol, plenty of fluids rest Sudeshna Sen13 August 2009, 03:00am IST Its like being gifted a designer bag by someone you hardly know, you dont quite know if its the genuine article. I still dont know if I actually had swine flu, though my doctor insists I did. How does he know? They didnt test me; he was diagnosing and refusing to give me medicines on the phone. Were not allowed to show up at the surgery and spread it about. I could have had measles for all I know. It felt like any other nasty viral fever, a week or 10 days of fever and stuff, and then youre left feeling like youve been flattened by a truck for another week or so. In hindsight, its no big deal, really, ho hum. Given the completely unnecessary palaver everyone is making about swine flu, one is more likely to die of sheer worry than of any flu. It doesnt, in the least bit help, that media, governments and health authorities in nation after nation are following almost identical patterns, about as predictable as the flu cycle. Its hit Indian shores about a month after weve been through the whole cycle of panic and alarmism, trying to first contain and isolate, then test and treat, then a shortage of medicines as everyone panics every time we sneeze, then a move towards trying to identify only the really risky cases and treating them, and finally by that time everyones already had it, and recovered. We were all given dire warnings for weeks, so when I sneezed I just hoped it would go away. By the time I summoned up the courage to call the National Health Service, theyd stopped quarantining people in their homes. No point, its too widespread already, the doctor said. Id been giving myself heart attacks worrying. Heres the real dope from a survivor. Dont panic. No, it is not fatal. Not by itself, only from additional complications and usually if you are pregnant, already have other serious illnesses like heart or kidney disease, or something major. Gas masks are useless. Its a nasty lil virus, its extremely fast and sociable, it transmits itself like the common cold. Anti-virals like Tamiflu are not preventives. Dont just pop em, even if you get hold of them. They have to be taken in exactly the first 48 hours after getting the infection, its useless else. The most effective treatment is paracetamol, plenty of fluids, rest, and chicken soup. Thats what I was given, despite nagging incessantly at my doctors for anti-virals. Im not eligible for them, apparently, because in the UK, antivirals are being stingily doled out only to high-risk categories. So I panicked, muttered darkly about being stuck in a backward country, and got someone in India to send me supplies of Oseltamivir. I called again. My rather tetchy GP told me not to whine, drink my soup and it would go away in a week or 10 days. Surprisingly, it did. By the time I was actually allowed into the surgery, and did a battery of tests in retrospect for any secondary or lingering infection, it was all over. Globally, WHO has officially abandoned any attempts to contain swine flu the medical strategy in pandemic hit countries is to identify outbreak clusters because this bug is neighbourly. Next, to identify the most at risk patients The rest dont need anything. Yeah, I didnt believe the NHS when they told me that either, but they were right. This time. [AI] revue of the textscout mobile reader
Hello friends, Today I tried the text scout mobile reader which has been newly launched as a competitor to KNFB reader. I tried this on my nokia n82 phone. I took pictures of pages of a book, and found that the recognition was good. The software reads the recognized text quite well. We can also use mobile speak or talks for reading the text. A totally blind person has the option of turning off the display for saving battery power. This software is compatible with nokia 6220 classic, n79, n82, n85, n95, n95 8gb. Text scout uses the internet for sending the image for recognition, to the server. I found that this process took time. If we have to use the software, a high speed internet connection will be required It has been mentioned that the software transmits 30 to 50 mb data per month. This can be expensive as well. Personally, I do not like the idea of using the internet for processing of image because of the time taken to process it. I shall further write my experiences with the product as I use it. Note that these are my personal views. Others may have other views. I request others to correct me if I am wrong anyware. Thanking you all. Warm regards. Dinesh thole. A 2004 TRAI notification inadvertently empowered service providers to changemobile phone tariff plans without the subscriber's knowledge. In its Telecommunication Tariff (Thirty First Amendment) Order, 2004', TRAI notified that a tariff plan once offered by an access provider shall be available to a subscriber for a minimum period of six months from the date of enrolment of the subscriber to the tariff plan. It also mentioned that a subscriber would be free to choose any other tariff plan even during that period. The amendment was made with a view to encourage competitive tariff fixingby mobile operators which would give the consumer plenty of options to choose from. It is unfortunate that this is being distorted, said T. Balachandran, TRAI Advisory Board Member. He also said he would bring this to TRAI's notice at its next meeting on September 17 and 18. The issue came to light when M.K. Haridas of 'The Proper Channel', aKochi-based NGO, realised that his monthly mobile bill didn't tally with thetariff plan he had opted for and that he was not informed of the plan shift. At the Consumer Court, the service provider cited the TRAI notification in its defence. Consumer should get complete plan As per the law, a week after service activation, complete tariff plan should be sent to the consumer. Subsequent change in plan should also be intimated, said Mr. Haridas. There is also provision for the consumer to shift from one plan to another without paying migration fee. Strangely, very few telephone subscribers are aware of the fact that if a problem in fixed line or broadband is not rectified by the operator in three days, the consumer is eligible for a seven-day rent subsidy. If it takes up to 15 days to fix the trouble, the subscriber should be given a 15-day rent cut. The subscriber will get a full-month rent concession if it takes more than 15 days for the company to do the repair, said Mr. Haridas, calling for better consumer awareness in this regard. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu Krishnan M. Hello Rajesh Usually, a repremand mail is sent privately. It was done at this instance as well. When I saw repeated OT postings he has now been debared immediately thereafter from making any postings. Don't worry things are under control, however, dirty linen is not washed publically, I suppose that maintains the docorrum. However, the present mail by the member who posted it, does violate the fundamental guidelines and the purpose of the group. It is not the case that member is new, or he posts such off-topic mails once in a blue moon, which I think can be tolerated. The practice with him is a regular one and he even appends justifications sometimes. The established practice in AI is to forward such mail to moderator for his approval. In the present mail, he has even foregone the need to append self-justification. I can not usurp the claim to represent other members on the group, however, it is widely felt that some members like the present mail poster, get away only with reprimands sometimes, however, others are just warned once, that too not necessarily, and are summarily expelled from the group even without any public announcement irrespective of controversy about their stand or their willingness to desist from the mistake etc. This, I feel is unwarranted. I can understand that one person may not find time always to moderate such a large group. So, as a way of relieving moderator of undue burden, and also to further democratize the process, we may have panel of, say, five moderators, distributing among themselves, the moderatorial responsibilities, and decisions on serious matters like suspension/expulsion being taken unanimously or by majority. This I am suggesting, because the group has exceeded in size and I believe has more than five hundred members. Rest I leave to wise discretion of moderator and group members. John Milton -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of mukesh jain Sent: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 10:56 PM To: accessindia Subject: [AI] Bill allows merger of Indian companies with foreign firms The Companies Act Amendment Bill, which was tabled in Parliament in the Budget session that adjourned last week, has proposed to allow Indian companies to merge with overseas companies, a move that could introduce greater flexibility in cross-border merger and acquisitions (MAs). At present Sections 391-394 of the Companies Act, 1956, allow only foreign companies to merge with Indian ones. The Bill has introduced Section 205 that also allows the reverse and stipulates that payment to shareholders of listed Indian companies being merged can be in the form of cash, shares or Indian Depository Receipts (IDRs) issued by the overseas companies. The amendment was first suggested in 2005 by an expert committee on company law chaired by Tata Sons Director J J Irani. If this amendment goes through, it will meet a key demand of many multinational companies investing in India. Legal experts said the merger of an Indian company with a foreign one can help structure MA deals in many ways. For example, if an overseas company has acquired another foreign company that has a subsidiary in India, the new provision will allow the acquirer to merge the Indian operations with itself, instead of retaining it as a separate entity. Similarly, if the Indian subsidiary is incurring losses, the overseas company may prefer to merge the Indian subsidiary with itself to gain maximum tax benefits by offsetting losses of the subsidiary against its profits. The provision may also make it easier for promoters of Indian companies to raise funds abroad by setting up listed entities abroad and merging their Indian operations with them. The proposed amendment in the Companies Act says, The provisions shall apply... to schemes of mergers and amalgamations between companies registered under this Act and companies incorporated in the jurisdictions of such countries as may be notified from time to time by the central government. Not all countries allow the merger of local companies with foreign entities. The Irani Committee had also recommended that the amendment follow international best practices and be made with suitable changes to the tax and foreign exchange legislations and IDR

Re: [AI] Keyboard shortcuts in VLC Player
Recently I asked about accessible media players for .mp4 files. Well I found an alternative - a website with shortcut keys for VLC Media player - the only one I've found plays these file types. So If you're using VLC, you'll want to check out this site. http://www.jaystech.com/2007/12/vlc-media-players-keyboard-shortcuts.html I use JFW but I get the sense that these hotkeys are universal. - Original Message - From: Amar Jain amarjain2...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2009 5:58 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Keyboard shortcuts in VLC Player Respected Sir, Before I start, I would like to tell you that VLC is not fully accessible. But in most of the cases, it works well with narrator. Coming to the point of keyboard shortcuts, Please do as mentioned below: 1. After opening VLC Media Player, Press ctrl+P from the main window of VLC. In case if you are unable to open by pressing ctrl+P, please start narrator, and go to toolspreferences from the main window of vlc. You can also try Alt+T+P. 2. Once you reach to preference window, you will hear a radio button Preferences show simple or simillar... If by default you are not there, please use tab untill you reach there. 3. Once you reach to that radio button, press up down or right left arrow, And you will hear Show preferences All radio button checked. Now after doing this, press tab untill you reach to treeview. Here also, you won't hear treeview. It is right after cancel button. Press down arrow key once or twice to make sure that you are in a treeview. The first option in tree view is advance. Press down arrow till you reach to Interfaces. Once you are there, press right arrow twice for expanding this treeview. You should get on to control interfaces which will be heard by your screen reader. Now, press down arrow once, and you will reach to Hotkeys settings. Press tab three four times, you will hear full screen which is also in a treeview. There are 101 items in that tree view. Now suppose you wish to know the shortcut of stop, go to stop by pressing down arrow key in that treeview, and once you are there, press tab twice and stop when Jaws or your screen reader says Read Only Edit. It should read the shortcut, but if it doesn't, then press once down or up arrow in that read only edit box, you will be able to hear that particular shortcut for that specific function. I could have told you the main shortcuts, but this method though bit boaring, will give you complete list of shortcuts available in vlc. If you face any problem, please let me know. Please remember, Jaws may not speak in some settings window. Please try to use insert up arrow, if it doesn't speak anything, go ahead leave that option. Because if it doesn't speak then we are not concerned with it. Then we have to go to next option.
