[AI] Right To Read Campaign in India
Dear Friends, the Daisy Forum of India, CIS and Inclusive Planet are initiating a nationwide Right to Read (R2R) campaign in India. The campaign will start in Chennai at Loyala college on 26th September and will cover the four metros over October. This campaign has been officially recognised by the WBU as a part of the global R2R campaign. We are writing to all organisations to come and lend their name and support to this campaign. We require you all to take part and spread the word. We believe that the amendments proposed a couple of years ago to the Copyright Act may again be under discussion in the ministry and so it may be a good time to put our requirements forward. Further, the WBU Treaty for the Blind is also coming up for discussion again at the next WIPO meeting to be held in December. It has currently got support of only three Latin American countries- considering that we house almost the largest percentage of blind and other disabled persons, it would be most beneficial for us if the Treaty comes through and we have been urging the Indian Government to support the Treaty as well. The Treaty seeks to harmonise exceptions and limitations to Copyright across all countries so that there can be an unimpeded exchange of books in accessible formats across borders. I suggest that all of you read the Treaty to get a better understanding of the issue involved. The Treaty also says that accessible books should be at prices which can be reasonably afforded by persons with print impairments, given their capacity of earning, which may be at the same price, or even lesser than the market price. Anyway, the long and short of it is that this treaty is good for us and the country and we want it to come through- so hence this awareness campaign. We plan to have half a day events where we will have open discussions and debates on this issue, get some famous persons to endorse this campaign, raise media interest and publicity and get public support. I'll send more details about this as and when they are finalised. I require help in: 1. getting all of you in the cities where this is happening to come and participate in large numbers 2. Suggest any famous personalities whom you may have access to for endorsing this campaign 3. help with organising this in different locations in different cities- if your colleges and universities will give us space- that is the best place to have these 4. Give your ideas for this campaign. Please write to me personally at nirm...@cis-india.org, or call me at my office number 080 40926283 after friday. I am travelling at the moment. Looking forward to your response, support and a great campaign together. Cheers, Nirmita PS We have registered righttoread.in as the campaign website- it should hopefully be up by the end of the week. Will of course keep you informed. [AI] BPA fest showcases students' talent
Ahmedabad: Exiled from the world of light and colour, and looked down upon by general society, the blind people of our country went begging from door to door, singing doleful songs in medieval India. On the other hand, a revolutionary change had taken place in Europe in the world of education of the blind. Louis Braille of France, himself blind, invented a tactile code for reading and writing of the sightless, which came to be named after him. In this background, Blind People's Association (BPA) was established on December 5, 1946 by a handful of educated and conscious blind youth under the presidency of the late Nagendranath Sengupta, professor of Bangabasi College, to promote self-confidence and self-dependence among their fellow brothers and sisters. The association is the only one of its kind in India since it is an organisation completely of, for, and by the blind. The BPA on Monday organised its annual function at Town Hall, to celebrate the talents of the differently abled. More than 500 students, teachers and staff of the BPA were present at the event, which was held in honour of the 'All India Flag Day for the Blind', celebrated on September 14th every year. Upendrabhai Shah of Shah Investors Home Ltd was the chief guest. Blind and disabled students and trainees from the BPA schools, workshops, vocational training and day care centres presented dances, songs and fashion shows at the programme. The BPA has been organising such activities for years. Our students can dance, sing, draw and do almost every thing that you and I can do, said Bhushan Punani, director, BPA (Ahmedabad). The programme also included events like folk and western dance, mimicry, raas garba, skits and a puppet show with children showcasing their own unique talents. We have many students who cannot listen to music, but can feel the vibrations and that itself makes them very happy, said Nandini Raval, project coordinator. The BPA is striving to increase the frequency of activities to provide the children with a healthy yet competitive environment to work and enjoy. The BPA's success bears testimony to the fact that a noble goal can be achieved with small means if the workers are motivated with selfless dedication and genuine love for the cause, said Shelly Bapna, an official at the BPA. Dear Shreekant and others: I remember a few days ago you posted some tips on Solona tool. I have a few doubts regarding it. Can we solve the Captchas using Solona in IE7 or 8 (Internet Explorer)? If so, could you give me the steps to do it? Where can we get it from? If Solona does solve the captchas, what do we use it for? When I visited their site www.solona.com or some thing like that, it has all the twitter messages. A few messages tell us that Solona will be offline for a couple of hours. What does that mean? after some time, there will be another message saying that solona is online . what is tool being online and offline? Similarly can any one guide me how to solve the captchas in FireFox? I'm using FF3.5 with JAWS10 and XP Service pack2. This may be the repeated request, therefore I seek your appologies. Meanwhile can any one also tell me how to use the Thunderbird? Is it accessible with JAWS? Some guidance will highly be appriciated. Hope I've made myself clear. Thanks in advance, Govind. Re: [AI] From The Top Titbits Mail
I'm afraid I never felt satisfied with the performance of webvisum. It is alright as far as some global sites are concerned, like gmail, hotmail and yahoo but this particular service is never suited for some typical Indian sites. For example, if you're to pay your airtel bill, or you need to recharge your Idea pre-paid card, webvisum would be of no use, it'll straight forward tell you that it can't solve this kind of captcha. Even at the time of paying the MTNL bills, it makes errors several times and after some attempts only you can expect the right solution. I'm sorry I'm not speaking against this service but since it is a machine read solution, you cannot really expect correct results all the time whereas solona is perfect in the sense that it is the human being and not the machine reads your code. Re: [AI] Talking Microwave Oven - finally in my home!!
I shouldn't be commenting on this without reading Prashant's blog post but I considered getting a talking microwave. Cobolt Systems here in the UK sells a particular type of LG microwave which has complete talking functionality with lots of nice features. I believe it can even tell you the weight of the food you put in the microwave. But it costs 195 pounds. On reflection, I also realised that I use microwave primarily for warming or heating frozen food and I don't need all the other features. So, I found a Cookworks basic microwave for 27 pounds. This thing has no display screen. It just has two nobs, one for adjusting the power (temperature) and the other is a timer. These are apparently called manual microwaves... I survived with this 27 pound manual microwave for 4 months before my sighted wife joined me in the UK. I might end up buying a full featured talking microwave in the near future. But I wanted to highlight the fact that there are also these cheaper alternatives. I was amazed at the wide range of microwaveable ready to eat food that is out there in the market. There are even idlis, dosas and rotis that can be cooked using a simple microwave. And I don't want to hear any lectures on healthy eating please. I had enough of those from my wife... Re: [AI] BPA fest showcases students' talent
Hello, Profesor Nagendra Sengupta founded Blind Persons' Association in 1946 in Kolkata, not Blind People's Association of Ahmedabad. It has been somehow confused. Both have initials of BPA. This information seems to have come from the web site of Blind Persons' Association at www.bpa.org.in Best regards, Amiyo Biswas. Cell: 91-9433464329 - Original Message - From: Vishnu Ramchandani vishnu.ramchand...@mphasis.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, September 16, 2009 1:31 PM Subject: [AI] BPA fest showcases students' talent Ahmedabad: Exiled from the world of light and colour, and looked down upon by general society, the blind people of our country went begging from door to door, singing doleful songs in medieval India. Re: [AI] How to use BSNL broadband on a laptop
Hi Subramani If this works, good. Or else you need to do the folowing aditional tasks. Firstly DSL modems comes with different combinations. Wireless and wired. If your modem has wireless, then you can use it straight out of the box as most laptops are WI FI enabled. IF it is wired and having multiple ports, then you need not disconnect it from your desktop and you can merely connect it to the free port on your modem. In this case your IP should be different than that of your desktop. May be one 1 up eg. if your desktop's ip is 192.168.1.30 you can set your laptop to be 192.168.1.31 To configure the lan connection you need to do the following: 1 go to start menu, acessories, communications, network connection 2 Select lan and go to its properties 3 Select internet protocol, TCPIP and again go to its properties 4 do these steps both on your desktop and laptop 5 use your jaws cursor to read the values from the desktop and replicate the same at your laptopp. Note: Set your laptop ip different than at your desktop as mentioned above. Besides, address constitutes block of 4 blocks each consisting of 3 digits. When the block gets filled up it will automatically jump to the next block. However if that block is supposed to contain less than 3 digit, you will have to put a dot to jump to the next block. HTH Harish Kotian - Original Message - From: Rohiet A.
