Dear pratik and all,
I am sorry if somebody is hurt by my mail.
We all should follow the guideline of this list, and harishsirs
comments are also respectable.
Let me say honestly I really respect pratik; he has great knowledge
and a fantastic command over English. I only wanted to say that if
somebody writes unfair we should react politely. I think pradips
intention of writing the mail was not bad, that why I hurt still
somebody think I have violated the rule of the list it’s my tough luck
after all we are all belong to one family.
Thanks.

hello to all folks out there.
well, as i always find myself technologically challenged at least, you
can always expect silly looking questions from my end.
one that i've found on this thread is that what is Kindle?
though i understood that i'ts a hardware device that probablly helps
in reading books of amazon, but yet certain things are not clear to me
as in, is it for visually impaired persons?
what are the features of this device?
would appreciate if someone could throw light.

[AI] Feroz is now recouping

2010-02-01 Thread Kotian, H P
Hello All

I just spoke to Feroz's son. The operation is now over and let's all pray for
his speedy recovery.

I don't think it would be a good idea to talk to him before 3 pm today.

He fell on to the track at Bandra station. It is so outrageous, in the past,
the edge of platforms had a different tile skirting which would help blind
persons from such accidents. However, with the passage of time, no one cared of
maintaining it or were ignorant or idiotic not to understand the implication of
 making the surface uniformly.

There have been so many similar accidents in the past and some fatal, however,
we don't seem to learn or rather unwilling to learn from avoidable accidents
like these.

It does not take high tech solution for it. Just some common sense and
willingness to care for mankind.
Harish

[AI] International Book Fair at Delhi

2010-02-01 Thread vibhu sharma

Dear All

Greetings to everyone.

As we already know, the International Book Fair began on Saturday, January 30,
2010, in Delhi at Pragati Madan.

I have been to the book fair at that vary day, and have seen the various stalls
put up by the different publishers.

It has been extremely heart breaking for me, to note, that despite it being the
international book fair, there was no ability of books accessible to the needs
of the visually impaired, by the general publishers, who had put up their
stalls.

At the same time, I must mention here, that our learned heads of the blind
organizations of Delhi, have taken an extensive and a regular interest to make
books available for the visually impaired, and have put in innumerable efforts
for the same.

So, this time, the Saksham Trust – Rajindar Nagar – Delhi, and All India
Confederation of Blind – Rohini – Delhi, have shown a huge interest towards
making reading materials available for us, and have taken an excellent
initiative, which is of course worth appreciating.

The Saksham Trust has campaigned in the book fair, ‘Right to Read Campaign’.

Nevertheless, the All India Confederation of Blind has put up a stall of the
books in Braille in the International Book Fair.

These efforts are of course worth appreciating, and these organizations deserve
huge thanks from us all.

Personally, through this communication, I extend my sincere thanks to the
learned heads of these organizations, and to all those who have put in their
precious time, and sincere and earnest efforts towards this initiative.

With best regards
Vibhu Sharma

2010-02-01 Thread prateek aggarwal
Dear jignesh,
oh, interesting, so you did not find anything disgusting in the
message sent by him.
If an objection for discussion about crack softwares in public has
goaded your gray sells to write this mail, then you might also like to
write message to public newspapers and TV channels to broadcast
pornographic materials with an excuse that there’s no harm in showing
the same as 80 percent of folks does see it.
Noone intended to slur anybody, but if public distribution of crack
softwares is what you call help, then I just find pity
 on you.
I wonder what smooth English in your perception is, but mind you, what
I’m writing is pretty smooth for me.
Of course there are other ways to tell for any mistake that one does,
but sending e-mail on an e-mail list is what I found most rational.
You’re welcome to suggest other possible ways, I’ll try to follow them
in future.
By the way, in spite of what should be in general and what not, we
all listers are binded with a set of terms and conditions that we get
at the beginning of our subscription.
If our respectable moderator has restricted some things to discuss on
the list, those who won’t follow would surely be sued.
It’s our duty to draw moderator’s attention when something wrong goes
on the list, and I’d whole heartedly thank respected harish sir for
taking instantaneous action against the crook.
Regards,
Prateek agarwal.

Hi!

I remember a post on AI few months back in which a complete review of
an iPhone was given by a blind user and was quite impressive in terms
of accessibility of the phone..
And according to the latest news, voiceover (screen reader) is
included in Apple's iPhone 3g, the new models of iPod touch and now
the iPad as well...

Also, Access India messages are archived and they appear worldwide
when a visually challenged person searches Google for some technology
related info. Henceforth results containing piracy not only compromise
the quality of the list, but also question the very purpose and
dignity of the list. Henceforth let us bear that in mind please. It's
like compromising the dignity of a high ranked University through

Oratio for BlackBerry® is now available

Longueuil, QC, Canada and Barcelona, Spain, February 1st, 2010 – HumanWare
and Code Factory are pleased to announce that Oratio for BlackBerry(R)
smartphones is now available for purchase. Formally known as Orator for
BlackBerry smartphones, Oratio is the first screen reader software solution
that enables visually impaired users to access and operate BlackBerry
smartphones using state of the art Text-To-Speech technology to convert the
visual information displayed on the BlackBerry smartphone screen into a
intuitive speech output. This enables its users to use BlackBerry
smartphones to increase their independence and productivity in today's
competitive world.

 Orator user

The name was changed from Orator to Oratio to avoid any confusion with an
existing product called Orator being manufactured by a telecommunications
company in the USA. "Although we got accustomed to the name Orator for
BlackBerry in the last few months, Oratio is less generic and provides a
more personalized name and sound for the product" says Michel Pepin, Product
Manager at HumanWare.

Availability:

Oratio will first be released in North America in English, supporting the
BlackBerry Curve 8520 smartphone from AT&T, available through online
purchasing from www.oratio4bb.com
  for $449 US for a
single license. Support for additional BlackBerry smartphone models and
languages will be available in subsequent versions of Oratio.

Oratio is the product of the joint collaborative efforts between HumanWare,
Code Factory, the leading provider of screen reader technology and maker of
Mobile Speak, and Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of the award winning
portfolio of BlackBerry products and solutions. Oratio users will experience
more freedom and independence in their activities with the ability to stay
connected anytime, anywhere. Users will also experience greater flexibility
to manage their day-to-day activities in ways that are most convenient for
them, increase their productivity and achieve more by quickly and
efficiently accessing information they need.

Oratio also provides employers with an accommodation solution for blind and
visually impaired employees that leverages an organization's existing
investment in BlackBerry infrastructure and technologies.

Feature rich, through its easy to use menu and efficient shortcut keys,
Oratio will provide users with:

* Intuitive and familiar audio user interface.

* Easy-to-use customization options for frequently used settings.

* Auto start mode when the device turns on.

* Different verbosity levels to allow users to define the amount of
information provided.

* Keyboard echo settings for text entry.

* Easy to use command structure.

* Support for BlackBerry smartphone's core applications.

BlackBerry smartphones offer multiple applications essential in a business
environment. Oratio was designed to support the core application found on
the BlackBerry smatrtphones allowing visually impaired users to:

* Manage instant messaging, emails, SMS and MMS.

* Make and receive calls with access to caller ID on incoming calls.

* Manage contact list and call log.

* Schedule appointments and tasks with alarms and reminders.

* Access to the phone's settings, ring tones, speed dials and voice
tags.

"Oratio is the first screen reader solution for a JavaME operating software
(O/S). While this first release version may not answer each specific
individual user's needs, HumanWare, with the joint collaboration of RIM and
Code Factory, remain dedicated and committed to the future development
growth of the product. We invite Oratio users to share their experiences
with the product. This will provide us with directions on how to improve
their BlackBerry smartphone experience" says Michel Pepin. "Our goal is to
provide equal access to visually impaired users by enabling them to access
and operate BlackBerry devices in a manner that is functionally equivalent
to solutions offered to sighted BlackBerry users".

Welcome to the
AccessIndia@accessindia.org.in
mailing list! The
"Access India" list was created to provide an opportunity for the
visually impaired persons in India to share experiences, questions,
and suggestions related to the use of computer technology.
Instructions for how to post to the list, subscribe, unsubscribe, and
other list commands are at the bottom of this message.

The "Access India" mailing list Guidelines.
My name is Kiran Kaja and I am the moderator of "Access India".
First, let me say that I consider my role as moderator on this list to
be to make it what you, the members, want it to be. I consider this
your list. The following guidelines try to reflect what the majority
of people on the list want. 1. Stay on topic. The topics for the
"AccessIndia" are issues concerning computer technology, Internet,
Careers for the visually impaired in I-T, Government policies,
audio-digital books, screen readers, scanning and other related areas.
You can discuss any aspect of assistive and accessible technology
which has something to do with the lives of visual impaired in India.
Any list member can post questions and the others can offer answers.
I will endeavour to make this list a friendly and helpful environment
where everyone will feel comfortable asking questions, seeking answers
and most importantly, making new friends and contributing something
useful for our friends. 2. Subject Lines. Let's make our subject lines
descriptive of the question that we are asking and try to remember to
mention the issue being discussed. Try to change the subject line if
the topic in the thread changes. 3. Quoting. We are a very new list
and as we progress, we can become a very busy list with many different
issues being discussed and it is hard to keep up with them without the
original post. If you do choose not to quote, please be sure you
include enough information to allow other list members to understand
what you are referring to. When replying to messages, place your
response at the top of the message. In a reply where it is easier to
mix the response in with the original message, please indicate that is
what you will be doing. 4. Virus warning messages and other such
material. Please do not send virus messages to the list. Send things
like this to me first and I would be happy to send the information to
the list if it is verified that it is valid. Attachments are not
allowed on the list and are removed from the messages before they
reach the list. This is to protect us from attachments which may
contain viruses. 5. [Thank You] messages. When posting a message,
first ask yourself the following question. Am I adding anything to
this thread, any more useful information, or help in answering a
question. Also, try to check if it has been answered already, so that
we can avoid having several duplicate answers. Thank you messages
should be sent privately, although that is not to say that if a
subject has been discussed and several alternatives have been offered,
please do let us know what ended up working for you. 6. Introduction.
We suggest that at the beginning, new members should give a brief note
about their background, hobbies and their place for the benefit of the
other list members knowing more about you all. 7 Seek for software
cracks or abbetting piracy is strictly prohibited and any violation on
this count is taken very seriously.

8. Although this is the last guideline, it is the most important. Be
nice to everyone on the list. More than anything I want this list to
be a place where people feel encouraged, friendly and helped. If
everyone follows this rule, everything else will fall into place.
Remember, if you have any criticisms, concerns, or suggestions for the
list, do not post them to the list. Send them to
ki...@uniquestindia.com
and give me a chance to take care of them

Despite the bout of polio she suffered when she was a toddler affecting one of
her legs, she is able to mesmerise everyone with her dance skills.

Y. Pushpalata, 8, daughter of daily wage labourer Appa Rao and his wife
Adilakshmi, has learnt Kuchipudi and won laurels by giving 10 performances at
various platforms by sheer hard work.

"My disability should not be a handicap for my dream to become a famed dancer,"
says Pushpalata, who is studying Class II at Sunflower Special School,
Madhurawada. Apart from special children, the school admits others from
poverty-stricken families to provide free education and hostel facilities.

Oozing confidence, she is thankful to her dance teacher Akella Bharati who runs
Bharatiya Kalasala and school founder M. Nagaraju Kumari for whatever she is
today.

Her dance at the annual conference of Rotary International on Sunday floored
all, motivating host Rotary Club Port city president R.C. Rai to announce a
financial aid of Rs.5,000. Later, the Rotarians lined up to give their bit of
contribution so as to enable the child prodigy to become richer by nearly Rs.1
lakh.

"She is not only a bright student but also has the temperament and the will
power to become an acclaimed dancer," declares Nagaraju Kumari. She spotted her
standing on one leg for a long time listening to a melodious song in the school
compound one day. Later, she started learning Kuchipudi from Bharati, a
disciple of Vempati Chinna Satyam.

Pushpalata's parents are proud of her success. "We don't have enough resources
to fund her studies and cherish her interest to become a dancer but we are
obliged to all those who are helping her to realise her dream," says her mother.

[AI] Sensory park for visually challenged in Chandigarh

2010-02-01 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
Chandigarh: 'Institute for the Blind' has created a sensory park with
the help of Chandigarh administration and Municipal Corporation for the
use of visually challenged persons.

This park has been built to provide a safe place for the visually
impaired to walk around in a better and fresh environment, away from the
accidental traffic threats and pollution.

Kuldeep Sodh, the vice-principal of the Institute said, "Our specially
trained teachers help in imparting mobility to the visually-challenged.
They are taught to walk with the help of walking stick in order to make
them independent, so that they can walk freely without being dependent
on anyone."

"We see, the traffic has become one of the major problems for such
people to walk on the road. Even we do not feel safe to send them out on
roads. That is why this park has proved very beneficial for these
visually-impaired students and I am sure they will make the best of it,"
added Sodh.

Apart from this initiative, the Institute has already incorporated an
infrastructure which comprises other learning skills, such as reading
Braille, learning to use computers, playing musical instruments, and
engaging students in creative activities such as singing and dancing.

This sensory park not only provides a breath of fresh air and mobility
to these students, but also attempts to enhance their sense of smell.

The students are taught to differentiate between plants and flowers by
their aromatic fragrances.

Labh, a visually impaired student said, "All our senses which are intact
get better as we smell and feel the things, here in this park. We can
distinguish between various plants whether big or small, and our senses
to touch and feel enhanced."

Employment generating activities like caning chairs, handloom weaving
and candle making are a part of the course curriculum, which not only
engages the students in constructive work but also helps earn good
monetary remuneration.

These activities also help in enhancing the courage and self-confidence
of these visually challenged students.
