[AI] Coming soon: Bluetooth's new, low-energy consuming avatar

2010-05-29 Thread Renuka Warrier

Coming soon: Bluetooth's new, low-energy consuming avatar

T. Ramachandran

Will pave the way for its use in a whole new range of devices
_
Small devices that run on button cell batteries can be equipped with Bluetooth

'Next generation watches will act as hubs of information and interact with
other devices'

_
KOCHI: The availability of a new, low-energy consuming avatar of Bluetooth, the
technology that facilitates short-range wireless communication between devices,
will soon pave the way for its use in a whole new range of devices, say experts.

The Bluetooth technology is now commonly used in mobile phones, computers and
many other devices.

There are three versions of this technology - the classic one that is used in a
wide range of consumer devices; the Bluetooth high speed technology which is
used for transfer of videos, music and photos between devices; and the
low-energy technology.

In recent weeks, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has released more
information about its forthcoming Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, the
highlight of which is low-energy technology.

Thanks to this technology, small devices that run on button cell batteries -
the small coin-like batteries used in watches, for instance - can be equipped
with Bluetooth. This means that small devices which receive data through
various sensors will be able to transmit it real time to nearby gadgets like a
mobile phone, laptop or computer and even a watch.

For instance, the 'next generation' watches will act as hubs of such
information and interact with other devices, say the promoters of this
technology.

So a range of button-cell powered gadgets connected with automotive and
automation home entertainment, security, fitness and sports and mobile health
will come enabled with this technology.

Executive director of the Bluetooth SIG Mike Foley told The Hindu , "I believe
that 'hub'-type devices [mobile phones, personal computers, and television
sets] will quickly include the low energy feature of the v4.0 specification.
This is because the design of low energy makes this a simple hardware upgrade
to existing design."

What are the challenges the manufacturers face in deploying the new technology?

"The chipset is designed to be a replacement for an existing Bluetooth module
allowing the antenna and other components in a design to be reused. However, to
take advantage of the new use cases, additional software must be created,
tested and deployed. Thus, some work needs to be done to take advantage of the
new capabilities supported," Mr. Foley said.

In the home environment, information provided by sensors could probably make it
easier to track happenings and trigger activities - in the kitchen, for
instance.

In automobiles, such sensors could keep track of parameters like tyre pressure
and alert the driver when there is need for attention.

[AI] The next step in telephony

2010-05-29 Thread Renuka Warrier

Date:30/05/2010 URL:
http://www.thehindu.com/2010/05/30/stories/2010053061371100.htm
_

Link: Front Page
The next step in telephony

Ajai Sreevatsan and Shyam Ranganathan

3G phone allows simultaneous use of speech and data services
CHENNAI: If a mobile phone is an integral part of your identity, all the recent
talk about 3G might have left you a bit lost and confused. The government has
earned windfall revenue from the recent 3G spectrum auction, but what does the
acronym mean to users hooked to their mobile device?

3G or 3rd Generation is the next step in the evolution of mobile telephony
standards. A mobile phone is essentially an extremely sophisticated radio (one
which can send and receive a voice message overlapped on top of a carrier
signal), and wireless telephony has come a long way since Marconi's first
successful trans-Atlantic radio-telegraph message in 1902.

"The significant difference in the functionality offered by a 3G phone is that
it allows simultaneous use of speech and data services," says Bhaskar
Ramamurthi, head of the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT),
IIT-Madras.

Packet Switching

The 3G phone uses a method of data transmission technology called Packet
Switching. Data is split into packets that have a unique address. Data can be
sent on any path in a network and recombined and inter-connected. Thus data
will be transmitted faster than voice calls, though both are routed through the
same virtual band of frequencies called the spectrum.

The higher data rate, however, comes at a cost. During the recent spectrum
auctions, 5MHz slots were allotted to various telecom players.

Imagine the 2G GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) standard of 31
carriers of 200KHz to be 31 cycle tracks, says Dr. Ramamurthi, "then the 5MHz
3G spectrum split into four 1.25MHz carrier pathways (as per International
Telecommunication Union standards) can be viewed as a highway with traffic in
both directions. Voice and data can be accommodated in the same channel, as the
carrying capacity is greater. Data transfer rates can go up to several Mbps."

Services like video calling and on-demand TV essentially tap into this extra
space in the air waves. The amount of bandwidth required to explore the full
potential of 3G could be as much as 15-20 MHz, a 500-fold increase in the
amount of bandwidth required.

The widened spectrum means that an upgrade of both the handset (due to the
requirement for a baseband chipset architecture that supports the 3G cellular
modem) and the air interfaces of the existing cellular network is required. The
dominant 3G air interface technologies are W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division
Multiple Access) and CDMA200, which are 'revolutionary' upgrades of GSM and
CDMA.

As devices get upgraded, 3G will be at the convergence of computing,
communications and consumer devices.

"How many are going to upgrade their handset just to get 3G services" asks J.
Shivkumar, Chief Technology Officer of Wi5, a wireless solutions provider. "It
is going to be a premium service and will be available only in high density
zones like Central Business Districts. Data access speeds will drop outside
these zones. In other locations, coverage will be available, but not the
required bandwidth to offer fast data access." A mobile voice call typically
consumes only 6-13 kbps.

Pointing out that data usage revenue has already overtaken voice revenue in the
U.S., A. Subramanian, Chief General Manager, BSNL Chennai, says: "The focus is
now going to be on getting more customers into 2.5G services such as GPRS and
EDGE through cheaper rates. Most of the existing handsets can handle GPRS. Once
initiated to data services, customers will tend to shift to 3G for better
access speeds."

Dear Friend,

Thank you for uploading the second part in small instalments. I am currently
downloading them one after another.

I have been reading the magazine for the past six months & have enjoyed it
greatly. I was sad when I learnt that they had changed from a monthly issue

I will write on the email id given by you & pray that they are accepting new

I will let you know their response to accepting new subscribers.

Will stay in touch.

Dear Sir,

I hope you have got the links to download the second part of the magazine
Listeners' Club. I forgot to answer your basic query: How you can
subscribe to the magazine. I don't know whether they accept new
subscription or not. However, let me inform you that the magazine is
published by Tina Parekh in collaboration with the Blind People's
Association of Ahmedabad. You can write to

tinaparek...@yahoo.com

The annual subscription is Rs120, which can be sent via Money Order, but
only if they accept new subscription.

If this is not materialized, I think you should not be worried by that. I
am going to upload its each and every issue. I will also bear it in mind
that persons like you face difficulties in downloading large files. So, I
will upload them in smaller files. The next issue will be published in the
beginning of June, and I will upload it as soon as I receive it. Perhaps
you know that it is a bi-monthly magazine.

With best regards.

Dear All!

I have some video clips in 3gp format. If I burn a CD using this format,
it does not get played or work. Is there any software which can convert
3gp movies in to 'dat' format or in any other format using which a CD can
be burnt and which can be played on any standard CD player. Thanks in
advance.

For the last two days, I am encountering a problem with my internet

The fact is that I haven't set this site as its default homepage.

My question is: how did this problem occur? Why am I not able to remove it

Subject: [AI] Differently-abled persons were demanding government jobs

Karunanidhi breaks schedule to meet, convince protesters to withdraw stir

Special Correspondent

Differently-abled persons were demanding government jobs

lending an ear:Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi interacting with
differently-abled persons, at the Government General Hospital in Chennai
on Friday.

Chennai: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had an unscheduled appointment on
Friday.

After learning from the morning newspapers that differently-abled persons
were on hunger strike for the third day, he landed up at the Government
General Hospital even before his breakfast.

Delighted to see the Chief Minister personally arriving to listen to their
grievances, the differently-abled persons gave vent to their sorrow.
Saying their families shunned them, they pleaded for government
employment.

Informing them that the government had a separate department for the
differently-abled, the Chief Minister told them that they should have
approached him personally for redress of grievances. Promising to fulfil
their demand within a week, Mr. Karunanidhi asked them to give up their
fast and go home.

Based on the Chief Minister's assurance, they gave up their protest.
Assuring them that the government order would be passed soon, Mr.
Karunanidhi returned home for his breakfast, stated an official release.

According to it, the government had appointed 77 visually impaired persons
trained at the special educators training school in Poonamallee but could
not provide jobs immediately to 72 more differently-abled persons from the
same school.

As per norms, 2 per cent of special educators' posts are reserved for
visually impaired and 1 percent for differently-abled.

The latter were informed that they would also be appointed through
Teachers Recruitment Board as and when vacancies arose.

Contending that the government should not differentiate among impaired
persons, the differently-abled launched a hunger strike on Wednesday.
Despite the Chennai District Welfare Officer for the Disabled promising to
take up the issue and in spite of being admitted to the GH, they continued
their strike till the Chief Minister met them, the release added.

Re: [AI] Science for VI students in classes XI and XII

2010-05-29 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Kartik,

If you are looking for engineers from different parts of the world, I
suggest browse through the profiles on Inclusive Planet. One quick way of
doing it is to enter the word "engineer" in the search box. You will be
shown results by file, by channels, and by users. The search result of users
has thrown up 45 results, out of which I am sure you would find atleast
10-12 relevant profiles. You can use the send message button which is there
against each profile to send them a message. I am pasting the links of a few
relevant profiles to give you an idea.

Jeevan who has pursued his B.Tech and has low vision
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profile&un=user/95

Morten Tollefsen, a blind person from Norway who is working as a research
scientist http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profile&un=user/2811

Fred, from the US who is a BS in Engineer from University of Carolina
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profile&un=user/2929

We have realized that providing a people search by location, profession,
school etc would be a big help for VIP's searching for similarly placed
VIP's across the world. So very soon, we shall be launching a powerful
profile search utility. In the meanwhile if you are interested you can
browse through the intro wall which has the profiles of VIP's from more than
50 countries. Here's the link to the introduction wall
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/intro_wall_olderposts

Let me know if you need any other help.

Warm Regards,
Simon Jacob

Re: [AI] Listeners' Club, the latest issue

2010-05-29 Thread ashik

Dear Sir,

I hope you have got the links to download the second part of the magazine
Listeners' Club. I forgot to answer your basic query: How you can subscribe
to the magazine. I don't know whether they accept new subscription or not.
However, let me inform you that the magazine is published by Tina Parekh in
collaboration with the Blind People's Association of Ahmedabad. You can
write to

tinaparek...@yahoo.com

The annual subscription is Rs120, which can be sent via Money Order, but
only if they accept new subscription.

If this is not materialized, I think you should not be worried by that. I am
going to upload its each and every issue. I will also bear it in mind that
persons like you face difficulties in downloading large files. So, I will
upload them in smaller files. The next issue will be published in the
beginning of June, and I will upload it as soon as I receive it. Perhaps you
know that it is a bi-monthly magazine.

With best regards.

Re: [AI] Converting the format

2010-05-29 Thread V. Jayakumar
Hi Sachit,

No need for software when things are possible online as SaaS!

Media-Convert.com converts anything and everything formatwise. Zamzar is
another option. Also youconvertit.com

Problem with software is that there doesn't seem to be one universal
converter. So you land up with too many different specialised converters.

Online is way easier...even emails you when done. Welcome to cloud
computing!

But if you really, really want som freeware...try this

[AI] Converting the format

2010-05-29 Thread Sachit Kumar Sahrawat
Dear All!

I have some video clips in 3gp format. If I burn a CD using this format, it
does not get played or work. Is there any software which can convert 3gp
movies in to 'dat' format or in any other format using which a CD can be burnt
and which can be played on any standard CD player. Thanks in advance.

2010-05-29 Thread Dr. Yogesh Sharma
Dear Madam, kindly clarify the purpose behind this mail. Is it only regarding
the authors of books based on engineering subjects? if not, is it an add by
some publisher to contact authors who wish to get their books published through
him? thanks in advance.
With best regards,
  Yogesh Sharma

[AI] webcast on proof reading by mr. l. subramani!

2010-05-29 Thread prateek aggarwal
“Proofreading is vitally important, hard to do well, and tedious as
hell.” ~Brian Clark.

Proofreading traditionally means reading a proof copy of a text
in order to detect and correct any errors. Modern proofreading often
requires reading
copy
 at earlier stages as well.

Whether you are writing a magazine article, a college essay or an
email to a client, getting your text free of mistakes is essential.
Having an erroneous article, essay or e-mail may sabotage your task,
frustrate your client, or even may cause you deduction in marks.
Is there any way out that may make your writing perfect and error free?

In the words of Mark Twain, "In the first place God made idiots," he
once wrote. "This was for practice. Then he made proof-readers.".
So, are proof readers made by god?
May be yes, but it’s even possible for people like you and me to learn
the art of proof reading and editing.
All that’s required is a passion to learn, interest in reading and
writing, and above all, an expert who can teach all the concepts with
patients.

If you having a passion and interest, then an expert wants to teach you.
One of the india’s premier journalists, mr. l. subramani is going to
present an exclusive webcast about how to do proof reading and
editing.
Mr. l. subramani is a visually impaired person himself, but his
excellence and expertise always proves him better then his sighted
counterparts.
Join mr, subramani at 10:00 AM Indian standard time on Sunday 30th
may 2010 for learning the core concepts of proof reading and editing
in an exclusive online webcast.
