[AI] Wireless speed freaks set to leave Wi-Fi standing

2010-06-25 Thread Sanjay

Can Wi-Fi rise to the challenge of super-fast, high-definition
downloads or are its days as the "killer app" of connectivity
 numbered?

by Wendy Zukerman

WI-FI as we know it is reaching the limits of its usefulness. It just
can't keep up with our appetite for services, such as new video
formats, that gobble up bandwidth. So what's next in the world of
blisteringly fast home-based wireless technologies?

For clues to where Wi-Fi is going, it helps to delve into the soup of
standards that will shape the future of wireless communications.

To date, most Wi-Fi hotspots use one of three connectivity standards,
802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g - the current favourite. Wi-Fi devices
connect to the internet over the radio waves in bands around the 2.4
gigahertz and 5 GHz frequencies, as defined by the international
standards body, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE).

Last year, the IEEE agreed the specification for a new Wi-Fi standard,
802.11n, which operates in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. This standard
is theoretically capable of transmitting data at
300 megabits per second - up from 802.11g's paltry 54 Mbps. The new
Wi-Fi standard should make streaming high-definition video a less
jerky experience than it has been so far. And further changes may take
speeds up to 600 Mbps.

Even so, based on past experience, additional bandwidth will soon get
eaten up by data-hungry services, so what are the prospects for even
faster wireless transmission?

One method being considered is to transmit data in a different band of
frequencies - generally speaking, the higher the frequency, the more
data can be shifted. Several consortiums are already building systems
which can operate around the 60 GHz band, including the IEEE's
proposed 802.11ad standard.

In mid-2009, the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig), a consortium
of technology companies including Microsoft and Intel, published its
specification for 60 GHz wireless communication technology. Ali Sadri,
president of WiGig, says that its protocol will support data
transmission rates up to 7 Gbps. At that speed, you could download the
equivalent of a Blu-ray disc onto your laptop in seconds.
At 60 gigahertz you can download the equivalent of a Blu-ray disc onto
your laptop in seconds

While WiGig's speed would easily surpass that of Wi-Fi, its range will
be far shorter, at around 10 metres in open air. This is because radio
waves at 60 GHz are subject to interference in the air, as the bonds
in oxygen molecules resonate with the waves. That means it will not
penetrate walls, confining your super-fast internet to a single room.
Sadri thinks that may actually be an advantage, improving users'
security by preventing outsiders tapping into your network.

The big advantage of 60 GHz is that it is free, says Stan
Skafidas, an electrical engineer at Australia's national technology
research group, NICTA. This is because governments considered it
unusable, so it doesn't require a licence, he says. Skafidas has been
developing a chip that has all the components needed for 60 GHz
connectivity built in.

NICTA's so-called Gi-Fi chip will comply with the 802.11ad standard
when it's finalised and allow downloads of up to 5 Gbps. Because the
chip is built in the same way as most silicon chips, it should be
possible to make them cheaply enough to compete with Wi-Fi, says
Skafidas. NICTA demonstrated prototype chips last year and expects to
go into full-scale production soon.

"Because it's very cheap, you could envisage a situation where every
power point in your house has this chip set into it," says Skafidas,
so the short transmission range of 60 GHz won't be a problem.

Elsewhere, the IEEE has working groups looking at improvements to
Wi-Fi's capability. Its 802.11ac standard will operate around the 5
GHz band, like 802.11a, but data will be transmitted over a greater
range of frequencies around that band to boost data rates. The
standard isn't expected to be finalised until 2012, though it expects
to exceed 1 Gbps.

Others think we should abandon the overcrowded airwaves altogether and
concentrate on light. Mohsen Kavehrad, an electrical engineer at
Pennsylvania State University in University Park and his team have
been working on an optical transmission system that is capable of high
data-transmission rates. One problem with using light is that you
normally need a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver.
Kavehrad's system gets round this by using a high-power laser diode to
generate pulses of infrared light, which can be bounced off the
ceiling. The reflected light is captured and refocused at the
receiver, where a special semiconductor known as an avalanche photo
diode turns light into a digital signal. The team have been able to
transmit data at 1 Gbps, and think it can go even faster. They
presented the work at the SPIE Phonotics West Conference in San
Francisco last month.

Adding reflectors and more sensors could

[AI] Stem Cells From Own Eyes Restore Vision To Blinded Patients, Study Shows

2010-06-25 Thread shahnaz

June 18 (Bloomberg) -- Patients blinded in one or both eyes by
chemical burns regained their vision after healthy stem cells were
extracted from their eyes and reimplanted, according to a report by
Italian researchers at a scientific meeting.

The tissue was drawn from the limbus, an area at the junction of the
cornea and white part of the eye. It was grown on a fibrous tissue,
then layered onto the damaged eyes. The cells grew into healthy
corneal tissue, transforming disfigured, opaque eyes into functioning
ones with normal appearance and color, said researchers led by
Graziella Pellegrini of the University of Modena’s Center for
Regenerative Medicine.

The stem-cell treatment restored sight to more than three- quarters of
the 112 patients treated, Pellegrini said yesterday in a presentation
at the International Society for Stem Cell Research meeting. The
patients were followed for an average of three years and some for as
long as a decade, Pellegrini said.

“The patients, they are happy, even the partial successes,” she said
in an interview at the meeting in San Francisco. “We have a couple of
patients who were blind in both eyes. Can you imagine for these
patients the change in their quality of life?”

The work was praised by Ivan Schwab, an ophthalmology professor and
stem cell researcher at the University of California, Davis, who has
treated patients in clinical trials with a procedure based on
Pellegrini’s work. While his patients improved for a time, the
benefits didn’t endure, he said in a June 15 telephone interview.
Pellegrini’s patients appear to have long-term improvement, he said.

“The powerful part of her work is she has such long-term follow-up,”
Schwab said.

Many of the patients she treated had been blind for years as result of
tissue and blood vessels growing over damaged parts of the eye. Some
had been through failed surgeries and alternative treatments.
Pellegrini estimated 1,000 to 2,000 patients in Europe suffer from
burns with chemicals such as bleach or industrial solvents and may
benefit from the procedure.

The key to success is to be certain that when the stem cells extracted
from the limbus are grown in culture they have the right mix of stem
cells and the differentiated cells that form the corneal tissue,
Pellegrini said. If there are too few stem cells in the transplant,
the improvement won’t last because there will be no reservoir to form
the new corneal cells needed with the normal recycling of cells over
time, she said.

The procedure succeeded after a single transplant in 69 percent of
cases. A second procedure was performed on some patients, boosting the
success rate to 77 percent, she said. The procedure was deemed a
partial success in 13 percent of cases and a failure in 10 percent,
she said.

Depending on the depth of the injury, some patients regained sight in
as little as two months, Pellegrini said. Others with deeper injuries
needed a second procedure and waited a year before sight was restored,
she said.

The applications of the work may extend to other organs, Schwab said.

“This is bigger than just the surface of the eye,” he said. “She may
be making a model for how to regenerate livers or other organs.”

Hi everyone, I wrote to the developer of Doc Scanner yesterday to
suggest they look into a specifically designed for visually impaired
people app for OCR and I got the best response ever back from them.
What a company.

Jussi Forsstrom, Jun 24 09:47 (EEST):
Hi Andy!
Thank you so much for your message. We are very pleased to hear your
thoughts and really appreciate it!
It's almost ironic that you
contacted us now about using DocScanner as a reading tool, as we are
just launching an app called SayText.
SayText is an app designed
especially for the visually impaired and by the way, it's free!
In a few words to describe it's use, you need to place the iPhone on
the center of a document. There's a big button for starting the tool,
tap it.
Slowly elevate the iPohne upwards from the document until you
hear an beep sound - this indicates, that the document is now fully in
frame and the camera will shoot automatically, when the picture is
stable / focused.
Now only thing you have to do, is to wait for a
while (You can tap the screen to hear the OCR progress, e.g. OCR
35%).
When the OCR is ready you can start the voiceover to read the
document out loud.
The app should come to Appstore in a week or so.
We're happy to give you more info about SayText. There is a website
for SayText:
http://www.docscannerapp.com/saytext/
There's also a video, where Mr. Heikki Ekola, totally blind person
uses it. He's representing the Finnish Federation of the Visually
Impaired - You can find the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlWJF27IdX4
This video is also at the SayText homepage.
We hope you'll find this app useful and if so, please tell to your
friends about it!
Your's sincerely,

VoiceOver has been the default screen reder for iPhone, iPad and other
Apple systems. I happened to see someone demonstrate the screen reader
it is excellent. Clear voice and simple to negotiate the pages. Fact I

2010-06-25 Thread Pamnani
I am not restricting anything. I have personally told some leaders of the
deaf community that they should intervene in these matters.

By the way Spastic society is a litigant too.

If the documents come to me from the government as promised and ordered on
Monday then whichever organisation shows up at my office can take a copy of
the set.

Its for everyone to try to protect their rights.

I have come back from court and immediately put it on this list. Everyone
can share it and spread it.

In these matters I represent the NAB. I always request a representative to
be in Court. Luckily today even NFB showed up.

I cant personally go through these ads and check what is wrong. I need help
and more than that I need instructions.

If I have to stop any wrong practise I have to do it immediately there is no
more time.

Re: [AI] Jobs in Maharashtra for the disabled

2010-06-25 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Definitely a wonderful job!
However, we should not count the chickens before they are hatched, more so if
the eggs are being laid in Maharashtra!
With erroneous identifications and so on, I am only cautiously optimistic
about jobs for the severely disabled..
Totally hearing impaired, i.e. those with more than 75% impairment, are, as a
rule, not allowed to apply.
I don't have firsthand experience about them, and have not heard any protests
in this behalf or even for denying jobs to totally orthopedically disabled
individuals.
However, cannot expect much from a government, which, blatantly violating the
central identification, refuses to identify any lecturer's post except music
for blind.

It would be good, if all the advertisements are scanned and uploaded somewhere
by any NGO.
Otherwise, I am ready to do so, if hardcopies are mailed to me.

And, yes, how can a government produce advertisements out of hat for six
hundred jobs within a couple of days at the court directive, without having
them duly published on their website or prominent newspapers or having them
notified through employment exchanges is beyond my comprehension.
And, is it the proper way of advertising jobs, in a constitutional democracy?
Articles 14 and 16 mandate equal access to public employment, so a fare and
transparent procedure has to be followed with due and systematic publicity and
not haphazard and hasty one.
And, yes, who knows government has consulted with its expert committee
consisting of ophthalmologists or not before giving assurance to court!?
(Smile)

Anyway, kudos to Kanchan for this much, at least

Re: [AI] Pls Advise - Case of Shalini Sethi from Delhi

2010-06-25 Thread Subramani L
This is certainly a case of serious and extreme harassment. It is
disappointing to know that CCPD, who is supposed to protect our rights
and due enforcement of the disability law, has abandoned the cause so
shamelessly and decided to side with the bank. Sometimes, you can't help
but accede to the cynicism of those in this list who sometimes we -the
over-optimists- often disagree with. Let us consider a few things we can
do:

I am no legal specialist... All that I can think of is to take this up
as a citizen journalist exercise by one of us, record the statements of
all those involved (if possible on camera) and pass the tape to a news
channel. The best way is to name and shame those who show their courage
to persons with disability. Let them face the public... Another thing I
can think of is an open public campaign through press conference (making
the person involved nd her father speak to the press) and explain the
whole thing. Third thing is to take this to IBA and see if some remedy
can be sought. The person in question here has been subjected to
emotional stress for efficiently discharging her duty. The officials who
should have supported her in situations like this and who failed utterly
in their duties have to be brought to some sort of an open court and
questioned in full public glair. Let us see if they can still taunt
persons with disability again. This is not merely the experience of one
person, but a forewarning that something similar may happen to any
person with disability in future. This has to be severely dealt with.

 Respected Madam,

   1. I joined the IDBI Bank at its Chandni Chowk branch on
26.11.2007(later
shifted to its Rajouri Garden Branch) as Executive , based on my
selection
in the all India Test conducted by the said Bank, under the quota for
persons with disabilities, as per the PwD Act, 1995. This post was
initially
on contract, to be renewed year-to-year, to be absorbed in the
services of
the Bank as Assistant Manager, an A category post, on availability of
vacancies, performance and a further selection process.
   2. I was performing well, doing multi-task duties, as a Teller,
handling
cash, preparation of demand drafts, handling Demat accounts, tax
collection
matters. I also worked on cheque clearing seat. During this period I
also
participated in two training seminars, conducted by the Bank. Trouble
started for me when Shri Rajesh Kumar joined this Branch as Head in
July,
2008. He was harassing me for no reasons, teasing me on my
disabilities,
calling me mad, threatening the non-renewal of my contract etc.
Things came
to peak on 21.11.2008, when I could not bear the daily bickering and
indignities any longer, I talked on my mobile to Shri K.P.Nair, Head
HRD,
who sits at Bombay Headquarters of the Bank, because he had earlier
helped
me in my posting problem, expecting that he will again sort out my
problem.
But instead of getting any relief I got a fax from his office at
5.00pm on
25.11.2008, when I was leaving the Bank, after my days work,
informing me
that my contract is not renewed and that I should apply to the Bank
for
encashment of my leave etc. I talked to him in the evening the same
day on
returning home but he informed me that the contract has not been
renewed
because of performance. When I talked to him about my complaint, he
told me
that he was looking into the matter. It took the Bank nearly 6 months
and
   several e-mails to honor encashment.
   3. Not getting any response, my father wrote to him on 1.1.2009
seeking
proper justice, considering that I got this job quite late in my life
and
   now at the age of 38 yrs. I had no further job opportunities;
pleading that
the state policy is to properly rehabilitate persons like me so that
they
could live their lives with dignity and self respect to become a part
of the
mainstream of the Society, but this letter failed to get any
response.
   4. Realizing that waiting further for justice from the Bank was
futility,
my father formally lodged the first complaint with the Chief
Commissioner
for persons with disabilities 24.2.2009, under Sec.59 of the PwD Act,
1995
This relevant Section reads that apart from taking steps to safeguard
the
rights and facilities made available for persons with disabilities,

2010-06-25 Thread Kiran Kaja
Both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (released here in the UK yesterday) have a
built-in screen reader called VoiceOver which provides very good access to
most built-in applications and a number of third-party apps. the older
iPhone 3G available in India doesn't have any accessibility features. There
is also a magnification feature called Zoom in 3GS and 4.

The iPhones have no hardware keys at all for navigating. all the
interaction, including text input is through the touch screen. however,
VoiceOver uses a set of simple gestures for reading out information,
navigating and text input.

Subject: [AI] The Hindu's new lay out

Hello friends
From today onwards, the Hindu news paper's web lay out has completly
changed. While it is more easy to read the news updates, there are
only very few news about the states. Moreover, to select a
purticular state or city is not found to be easy. Has anyone tried
the news paper? If so, please provide your feed back.
Rgds,
Renuka.

Respected Madam,

  1. I joined the IDBI Bank at its Chandni Chowk branch on 26.11.2007(later
shifted to its Rajouri Garden Branch) as Executive , based on my
selection

in the all India Test conducted by the said Bank, under the quota for
persons with disabilities, as per the PwD Act, 1995. This post was
initially
on contract, to be renewed year-to-year, to be absorbed in the services
of

the Bank as Assistant Manager, an A category post, on availability of
vacancies, performance and a further selection process.
  2. I was performing well, doing multi-task duties, as a Teller, handling
cash, preparation of demand drafts, handling Demat accounts, tax
collection

matters. I also worked on cheque clearing seat. During this period I also
participated in two training seminars, conducted by the Bank. Trouble
started for me when Shri Rajesh Kumar joined this Branch as Head in July,
2008. He was harassing me for no reasons, teasing me on my disabilities,
calling me mad, threatening the non-renewal of my contract etc. Things
came

to peak on 21.11.2008, when I could not bear the daily bickering and
indignities any longer, I talked on my mobile to Shri K.P.Nair, Head HRD,
who sits at Bombay Headquarters of the Bank, because he had earlier
helped
me in my posting problem, expecting that he will again sort out my
problem.
But instead of getting any relief I got a fax from his office at 5.00pm
on

25.11.2008, when I was leaving the Bank, after my days work, informing me
that my contract is not renewed and that I should apply to the Bank for
encashment of my leave etc. I talked to him in the evening the same day
on

returning home but he informed me that the contract has not been renewed
because of performance. When I talked to him about my complaint, he told
me

that he was looking into the matter. It took the Bank nearly 6 months and
  several e-mails to honor encashment.
  3. Not getting any response, my father wrote to him on 1.1.2009 seeking
proper justice, considering that I got this job quite late in my life and
now at the age of 38 yrs. I had no further job opportunities; pleading
that

the state policy is to properly rehabilitate persons like me so that they
could live their lives with dignity and self respect to become a part of
the

mainstream of the Society, but this letter failed to get any response.
  4. Realizing that waiting further for justice from the Bank was futility,
my father formally lodged the first complaint with the Chief Commissioner
for persons with disabilities 24.2.2009, under Sec.59 of the PwD Act,
1995

This relevant Section reads that apart from taking steps to safeguard the
rights and facilities made available for persons with disabilities, the
Chief Commissioner, on his own motion or on the application of the
aggrieved

deprivation of rights of persons with disabilities, non-implementation of
  laws,rules,bye-laws,regulations,executive orders, guidelines or
instructions
made or issued by the appropriate Governments and the local authorities
for
the welfare and protection of rights of persons with disabilities, and

Hi: FYI a few of this group members are themselves heading organisations
and they are good at what they do. The need of the hour is to raise the
voice when such things happen. You need not be a member or head of an
organisation, you can do it as an individual. Ms. Jayakumar, for

question now is whether some of our members, especially those in the
same region or state as the person in question, can do something about

Dear Vamshi:

Perhaps, due to some connectivity issues, your outgoing mails have not gone
out of your outbox. May be, before you quit the Outlook, do a Send / Receive

Try this and let me know if still you have any problem.

Re: [AI] Problem in MS outlook

2010-06-25 Thread Geetha Shamanna
There could be several reasons:
1. The e-mail addresses of the messages stuck in the outbox may be wrong.
This often occurs when you paste an address from another location and
inadvertently include a >, <, or a period sign with it.
2. Your Internet connection might be patchy.

>From your Outbox, open each mail and resend it by pressing ctrl-Enter. If
this does not work and if your Internet connection is fine, the e-mail
addresses could be causing the problem.

As I mentioned a few months before, I used the 3gs and it's very good
and the touch screen has been really made accesible. As soon as you
activate the voiceover, the touch screen interface changes and they
have different sounds to indicate various menus. Typing could be a bit
problematic thing, but Iphones and Ipod touch clearly demonstrate the
fact that it is possible to produce phones/computers with in-build
accesibility features that are very reasonable.

[AI] Problem in Downloading the Latest JAWS from FreedomScientific website.

2010-06-25 Thread govind reddy
Dear list members,
I'm writing after a long time.
Yesterday, I was trying to download the updated version of JAWS11 from

http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.asp

Don't the reason, but it gives me the instruction (Operation timed
out) after 99 % of the downloading process.
As an alternative solution, I switched on to its HTTP download page at
http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/http/http-downloads.asp
Even then, the instruction is the same after downloading the 99% of
the application.
What could be the reason for this?
Could any one send me the updated version of JAWS,
•JAWS 11.0.1447 32-bit – May 2010 English (94.8 MB)
Awaiting for your kind reply,
Govind.

[AI] Indian professor devises method to use cellphone for eye

2010-06-25 Thread Renuka Warrier
The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Indian professor devises method to use
cellphone for eye tests
BOSTON, June 26, 2010

tests

A team led by an Indian-origin professor has devised a method of using mobile
phones for conducting eye tests, a technique it hopes will be useful in places
lacking hi-tech eye equipment.

The device NETRA (Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment), has been designed
by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab Associate Professor
Ramesh Raskar, visiting Professor Manuel Oliveira, student Vitor Pamplona and
post-doctoral research associate Ankit Mohan.

The two-minute eye test can be carried out using a small plastic device clipped
in front of a cellphone's screen.

The patient looks into a small lens, presses the phone's arrow keys until sets
of parallel green and red lines just overlap. The process is repeated eight
times with the lines at different angles for each eye.

The process takes less than two minutes, after which software loaded in the
phone provides prescription data.

"Our device has the potential to make routine refractive eye exams simpler and
cheaper, and, therefore, more accessible to millions of people in developing
countries," Professor Oliveira said in a statement.

The technology takes advantage of huge improvements in the resolution of
digital displays and their widespread proliferation in cellphones.

Apart from the software to run on the phone, all that is needed is the snap-on
plastic device, which, Professor Mohan says, can be produced at a cost of
about $1 to $2, but cost a few cents more in large quantities.

The team is preparing to conduct clinical trials, preliminary testing with
about 20 people and objective tests using camera lenses have shown that it can
achieve results comparable to the standard aberrometer test, which shines a
laser into the eye and uses an array of tiny lenses to measure its
characteristics.

The group plans to launch production of the device, initially targeting parts
of Africa and Asia. It also hopes to produce an advanced version that will
be able to detect other conditions, such as cataract, which could be sold in
the developed world as well.

NETRA is a quicker, simpler and cheaper way to test eye sight, said the team,
which has already applied for a patent.

According to the World Health Organisation, uncorrected refractive errors are
the world's second-highest cause of blindness, affecting about two per cent
of the world's population.

Nearly two billion people have refractive errors and they could be potential
beneficiaries of the new system. - PTI

. The test can be carried out using a small plastic device clipped in front of
a cellphone's screen
. The snap-on plastic device can be produced at a cost of
