[AI] Revised BBC WorldService Audio File

2010-08-12 Thread Vikas Kapoor
Folks,
Long time back, I'd prepared and circulated a html file in order to be able to
play various BBC services including the Hindi services directly without having
to visit the site. That file appears to be outdated now. If anybody is
interested in having the updated version of the same file, I've re-worked and
you can click the link below and open the updated file and save it to your
computer for the later reference. Remember, this time none of the services will
play in Real Player, rather they'll play in iPlayer of the BBC over the website
window itself which is quite accessible with JAWS, you can access all the
regular buttons within the flash movie. The file will remain on the server for
three months.

Re: [AI] Retina ndia project in Bangalore- need contacts of parents

2010-08-12 Thread Pinkesh Tailor
Hi!
Most of the NGO operating in the field of disability have to now tight
their belt and begin a mark to operate as a professional Organization.
If the differently challanged people want to walk sholder-to-sholder
with the universe then each individual will have to enlight the
fellow-being about our being. The NGO'S working for employment for
visually challanged have a great task of educating the companies about
the routine as well as professional activities of visually challanged
people. For this they should instead of requesting for employments
from companies should market the visually challanged people to the
masses. This they can accomplish by giving presentations and live
talks from successful and prosperous visually challanged people. This
would gradually create awareness among people and companies that the
challanged citizons are in no way conservative to other able citizon.

Actually, there is a file called loadstone.exe on the main directory
itself and that's the file you should open. Again as the message
states, you should be online to use the google root generator, but the
rest of them can be used offline. Vetri.

[AI] Govt. Mulls quota in private sector for disabled

2010-08-12 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Times of India:

NEW DELHI: A government panel is discusing if job reservation for disabled
persons can be extended to the private sector.

A committee entrusted with the task of overhauling the Persons with
Disabilities Act is mulling providing reservation for disabled persons in
private
sector
through a law. Presently, it is limited to government sector with advisories to
private employers to recruit persons with disabilities in suitable jobs.

If so, the definition of "establishment" in the new law would include private
sector.

The committee, constituted by social justice ministry, is also thinking of
providing reservation in educational institutions. While 5% quota can be given
to disabled children, 1% may be given to wards of disabled persons.

These issues were part
of discussions on Thursday. It is also being examined if "disability" should be
defined in the Act or in the rules which are easy to amend.

[AI] Retina ndia project in Bangalore- need contacts of parents

2010-08-12 Thread Anandhi Viswanathan
Hi all,

Retina India is planning a workshop in Bangalore to highlight issues
faced by children with progressive vision degeneration and low vision
to teachers in mainstream schools and open opportunities for children
with retinal conditions for inclusive education.

In this context, we have scheduled a presentation to be done by a
parent of a child with retinal conditions to raise awareness on the
various issues faced by the parent while seeking schooling for their
child.

We are looking for one such parent who can present this part of the
programme. We will assist you with putting the presentation together
and help you prepare for the same.

As Retina India is oprating on a stretched budget, we will only be
able to offer you accomodation if you are travelling to Bangalore and
will not be able to sponsor your travel.

Parents willing to be part of this exercise may get in touch with me
either on this ID or the mobile number provided below.

Mr. Mohammed Asif Iqbal vs. Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata,
Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), and All India Council of
Technical Education

Case No.: 2559/2003

Complaint: Mr. Mohammed Asif Iqbal, a visually handicapped and a graduate
in

Commerce, filed a complaint under Section 59 of the Persons with
Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full
Participation) Act, 1995 against IIM Kolkata. The complainant submitted
that

he appeared in Common Admission Test on December 9, 2001. He was not
accepted into IIM, Kolkata. He did well in English and Mathematics but not
on data interpretation portions. He met Chairman, Admissions, who
explained

that quota does not identify visual, deaf or orthopaedic handicap
separately. He informed the Chairman, Admissions that visually impaired
have

more disadvantages over the other handicap groups. Orthopaedic or hearing
impaired can see the graphs but visually impaired have to rely on the
scribe. Complainant requested that IIMs should take initiative to
recognize

the value of teaching blind candidates and providing fair opportunities by
softening or lowering their admission standards for people like him. He
also

suggested to set 1% seats aside for each handicap group which would serve
their potential best.
Judgement: It was unanimously agreed that the guidelines/instructions on
proposed lines should be framed and issued by Ministry of HRD. Ministry of
HRD was advised to issue the guidelines so that these would be available
to

the prospective candidates of the forthcoming CAT etc. They may also
supplement the proposed guidelines.

A heartrending incident, to say the least.

Friends have well pointed out that all human beings are vulnerable to
such incidents. Taking into account our adaptability and precautions,
I involuntarily agree that blinds are more vulnerable.

So far the question of a good understanding among blind couples arises
- it is highly probable that a sighted and blind match can be equally
good. Marriage is a confluence of two souls; why bring any physical
strength or weakness, ugliness or beauty into account? This, I think,
clarifies that people who look for a true union don’t care a toss
about any materialistic aspect.

Love lies at the core of all the relationships. If there is love
between a couple, things like disability or ability, richness or
poverty and a host of other contrasts become insignificant.

I am unmarried and never even had a thing like a girlfriend. But the
one thing I am certain about is that

Love rules!

story a base behind any of your decisions .

I agree to some of the folks that we are vulnerable to this kinds of
things, but the question is, who in the world is not vulnerable to

Kids are more vulnerable then elders, old men are more vulnerable

Subject: Re: [AI] Blind couple found murdered, tenant missing
My deep condolence to the passed souls.
Just I had a talk with the son in law of victims (Santosh); he is in
hospital because Anjali (one of the daughters of victims) is admitted
in hospital in unconscious condition due to shock and still no
improvement.

According to Santosh, both the culprits have been arrested and
accepted their involvement. However, the family of victims is afraid
of getting justice since both of criminals are from affluent families.

I wish that nothing less than death penalty will be awarded to the devils.
And I agree with the statement regarding our vulnerability. Of course
we are vulnerable and only pragmatic remedy seems is the caution.

Hi all,

The off-line tools now include a blind-friendly version of Google's
Directions service (route generator). You can download the off-line tools
from the 'Tools' page on the Loadstone-GPS website. The computer that runs
the tools should be connected to the internet for this tool to work.

[AI] Access India Archives & exam website accessibility

2010-08-12 Thread V. Jayakumar
Dear Harish / Srinivasu,

1. I find the archived posts of the forum at http://mail-archive.com very
useful to dig out information for advocacy purposes. Initially I was
wondering if Harish could work out a tagging system for easy retrieval and
classification of information. Now I think the inbuilt search on
mail-archive.com itself is pretty exhaustive - only issue is that I don't
know if the website itself is accessible enough from a VI pov. I know there
are automated tools like webaim etc but since we have the benefit of inside
expertise, I was wondering if Srinivasu could check out
mail-archive.comfrom an Indian user's perspective (using JAWS/NVDA
testing to fine-tune the
user's experience).

If all is well, then the forum can start utilising this wealth of
information right away - if not, then I'm sure that Srinivasu's report on
tweaks to make it perfect for a VI user experience would be enough to
convince the folks at mail-archive.com to make the necessary changesin
fact, am confident in can happen very quickly online!

2. There are only a few months left before the CAT and other similar exams -
why not extend this testing to those websites too, so we can try to effect
change in those areas too? We have nothing to lose - worst case scenario, we
can at least bring out a guide on shortcuts at the online exam experience
for future candidates reassurance ;-)

What do you think?

Re: [AI] DI section in CAT Examination.

2010-08-12 Thread V. Jayakumar
Swati the case summary is below, link to judgement is at end (Word Document)

You may find this archived thread useful in addition
http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/msg29672.html

Mr. Mohammed Asif Iqbal vs. Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata,
Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD), and All India Council of
Technical Education

Case No.: 2559/2003

Complaint: Mr. Mohammed Asif Iqbal, a visually handicapped and a graduate in
Commerce, filed a complaint under Section 59 of the Persons with
Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full
Participation) Act, 1995 against IIM Kolkata. The complainant submitted that
he appeared in Common Admission Test on December 9, 2001. He was not
accepted into IIM, Kolkata. He did well in English and Mathematics but not
on data interpretation portions. He met Chairman, Admissions, who explained
that quota does not identify visual, deaf or orthopaedic handicap
separately. He informed the Chairman, Admissions that visually impaired have
more disadvantages over the other handicap groups. Orthopaedic or hearing
impaired can see the graphs but visually impaired have to rely on the
scribe. Complainant requested that IIMs should take initiative to recognize
the value of teaching blind candidates and providing fair opportunities by
softening or lowering their admission standards for people like him. He also
suggested to set 1% seats aside for each handicap group which would serve
their potential best.
Judgement: It was unanimously agreed that the guidelines/instructions on
proposed lines should be framed and issued by Ministry of HRD. Ministry of
HRD was advised to issue the guidelines so that these would be available to
the prospective candidates of the forthcoming CAT etc. They may also
supplement the proposed guidelines.

press the Windows key, then Escape and you'll be focused on the start
button. You can tab from there to other parts of the taskbar.

Windows key + B will take you directly to the Notification area where most
of the running programs show up . To get the menu for one of the icons
there, press the Applications key when you have the icon selected.

not sure if there is a shortcut to get list view to catch all of the items
in it. Sort of what like jaws does.

Love rules!

Re: [AI] Blind couple found murdered, tenant missing

2010-08-12 Thread Himanshu Sahu

I don't want to inflame the debate about VI vi marriage.
However, Visual impairment is not the guarantee of mutual understanding.
Besides, we cannot ignore genetic, problems and greater chance of their
occurrence. Here also, all three daughters are VI.
Further, taking into account inaccessibility of infrastructure and services in
general for an average VI, the prospect horrifies me, though two of my elder

Anyway, to reduce genetic possibilities of disability, in our family we have

Hmm,
Personally I'm not much acquainted with blind couples, or even much of
blind people in general, but what I'd like to say is that blindness
doesn't look like a reason for all of this bad incident to me.

being a delhiIght, I keep coming across to a lot of such news in delhi
itself where landlords are being murdered/exploited/annoyed by
tenants.

Further, horde of wrongful acts are done by home servants too.

So, incidents like these are pretty general around us unfortunately
and therefore, this should not be seen a blindness specific one.

As I said, I don't know of blind couple, but I'm agreed to what said
by Prateek, that whatever you decide, your decision should not be
based merely on this stupid awful reason.

In fact, I wonder, a match of V I with a V I in terms of life partner
should be wonderful!

Who else may be a better companion if he knows all of your problems
and their solutions too!

At least, they know all the common difficulties of each others so, one
won't need to feel impaired while expressing the regular stuff.

Looks like they can set a nice chemistry.

I'm highly amazed to read about this family. A couple, 3 daughters,
all blind, but well settled! Guys,
Wonder, isn't it?

Whatever the punishment, blindness of the victims should be an aggravating
factor while convicting and punishing the culprits. Let us see if courts think
it is.

However, am not sure whether it will put the case in the rarest of the rare
category for which only, the capital punishment is warranted in our country.
Death sentence of even karlanji convicts is commuted by high court, so cannot
really hope for capital sentence.

Blind couple found murdered, tenant missing

SR | New Delhi

A blind couple was strangled to death in their double-storey residence in
Vivek Vihar area of East district on Tuesday.

Cash and jewellery worth of lakhs of rupees are missing from the spot. The
prime suspect, tenant of the deceased, is absconding. Police said the tenant
was not verified.

A senior police official said, "We received a call from neighbours on
Tuesday morning. The deceased have been identified as Rajendra Verma (52)
and Shobha Verma (50). Rajendra Verma had opted for a voluntary retirement
from JNU. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem."

Additional DCP (East) DK Gupta said, "Prima facie, it seems to be a case of
loot. The key suspect in the case are deceased's tenant and his associate,
who are absconding from the scene after the incident. Both are natives of
Uttar Pradesh. Teams have been formed and investigation is on to nab the
culprits."

The couple stayed in house number 137, Janta flat of Vivek Vihar while their
tenant stayed on the first floor. They had been living there since July 17
this year. The tenants were introduced to the couple by Sushma, a neighbour
of the deceased.

The deceased had three daughters identified as Hema (19), Leena (20) and

Hope this doesn't discourage VC men from marrying VC women. Even we
sometimes misunderstand safety with eyesight. I am sure the couple's sight
or blindness had anything to do with the brutal act of tretchery.

true, that presence of sight does not always avert such brutality, however,
absence of sight surely facilitates it, making us more vulnerable.

Re: [AI] Blind couple found murdered, tenant missing

2010-08-12 Thread aisha sahani
Hmm,
Personally I’m not much acquainted with blind couples, or even much of
blind people in general, but what I’d like to say is that blindness
doesn’t look like a reason for all of this bad incident to me.

being a delhiIght, I keep coming across to a lot of such news in delhi
itself where landlords are being murdered/exploited/annoyed by
tenants.

Further, horde of wrongful acts are done by home servants too.

So, incidents like these are pretty general around us unfortunately
and therefore, this should not be seen a blindness specific one.

As I said, I don’t know of blind couple, but I’m agreed to what said
by Prateek, that whatever you decide, your decision should not be
based merely on this stupid awful reason.

In fact, I wonder, a match of V I with a V I in terms of life partner
should be wonderful!

Who else may be a better companion if he knows all of your problems
and their solutions too!

At least, they know all the common difficulties of each others so, one
won’t need to feel impaired while expressing the regular stuff.

Looks like they can set a nice chemistry.

I’m highly amazed to read about this family. A couple, 3 daughters,
all blind, but well settled! Guys,
Wonder, isn’t it?

Salute the couple!
May your souls rest in piece.

Aisha sahani.
