Re: [AI] Test report on I-ball QuickScan scanner.
Hello, Any standard good quality scanner is compatible with Fine reader. We have used following models of scanners with Fine Reader program. When we choose scanner we consider budget, speed, scan area and other features like its own scanning software. HP Scanjet 3110 - A4 size flatbed high speed scanner HP Scanjet 3010 – Basic flatbed A4 size scanner Epson GT2500 - A4 size scanner with Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Epson GT15000 - Double A3 size flatbed scanner High Speed The cost of above scanners ranges from 4,000 to 60,000 rupees. And as such many more scanner models are good for scanning. People from this list must be using different types of scanner models. It is difficult to suggest a single scanner model. Scanning accuracy also depends on scan input material / pages and your scanning settings like brightness, contrast, threshold, OCR engine, etc. One can do sample scanning of few pages to check the result and then do the settings changes for best scan result. [AI] Helping the blind get over their fear of water
There are, people who are doing fantastic stuff. Here comes one more illustration. I loved the efforts, and though i’ve learned swimming from a general instructor, but would have loved to learn in his guidance as well if I was in Bangalore. Great work by this gentleman, salute! --- Helping the blind get over their fear of water This business manager with a pharma company and his friends spend their precious mornings giving swimming lessons to the visually impaired G Devaki Posted On Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 12:24:57 AM The shocked expression on the face of a blind man after he accidentally stepped into a puddle is something that Vasantha Kumar B R could never erase from his memory. So he decided to go right ahead and do something for his blind brothers and sisters. He decided to give swimming lessons to the visually impaired to help them overcome their fear of water. Vasantha Kumar (second from left) with his students (from left) Sridhar, Anil Kumar, Chandrashekar and Ashok The business manager with Suvas Heilung Pharmaceuticals and his friends now teach visually challenged degree students swimming every day from 7 am to 8 am at the Basavanagudi swimming pool. This, he says, will not only help them shrug off their irrational fear of water but will also make them more confident and courageous. “I was at South End Circle one rainy day, when I saw a blind man accidentally step into a puddle and look absolutely shocked. That’s when I felt that maybe the visually challenged do suffer from water phobia,” said Kumar. Kumar, who has been swimming since the past three years, then got in touch with an NGO at J P Nagar who in turn provided him with four visually challenged degree students. But why didn’t he start with school children? “I was apprehensive for the safety of visually impaired children, so I thought I would start with degree students. Earlier, the students were slightly scared to swim in even six to 10 feet of water, but now, they can easily swim in 50 feet of water,” said the father of twin daughters. Soon, Kumar and 15 of his swimming colleagues started teaching four degree level blind students how to swim. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the 38-year-old initially. “At first, it was challenging as this was the first time they were doing something like this and I could see the anxiety on their faces. But for them, their ears are their eyes and they learnt from listening. So if they had to go in one particular direction, they would follow their instructor’s voice and move accordingly,” he added. The number of students has increased to nine, with five more registering with them. “We will start another batch from next week,” he said. The group makes sure that their students are not put to any inconvenience. “They come everyday barring Wednesdays. Usually, swimmers have to pay Rs 16 but we don’t let the students pay. We foot the bill,” he added. Kumar, who hails from Sakleshpur in Hassan district, also points out that swimming has advantages for the blind. “Swimming helps a person to become more confident and courageous. It’s more than an exercise as it teaches people to overcome hurdles.” Kumar, who teaches techniques like freestyle and backstrokes has only one request. “There are so many swimming pools in Bangalore and so many swimming coaches. If they come together to teach even a small percentage of the visually impaired how to swim, what a difference it would make.” May his tribe increase I always wanted to play in water like everyone else, but could not. I always wanted to learn swimming, but never got an opportunity. But when Kumar sir came forward to teach us, I knew I had to go for it. I cannot express what I felt when I got into the pool the first time. But now, I feel confident. — Ashok (22), final year BA student, St Joseph’s College I had a great fear of water. When Kumar sir volunteered to teach me, I was reluctant. But when my friends decided to learn swimming, I too decided to follow suit. I have overcome my fears now. I am proud of sir. May his tribe increase. — Anil (23), a BCom graduate Swimming is a life-saving skill. More than getting into the water, it’s swimming in the right direction that makes all the difference. With people like Vasanth Kumar willing to help us out, I guess people like us will literally get to move in the right direction. — Chandrashekar (23), who is doing a chartered accountants course Many people express sympathy with people like us. . But it is only a few who get into action. Kumar is one such person who converted thoughts into deeds. — Sridhar (23) --- regards, Prateek agarwal. Re: [AI] Maharashtra Litigation
Hi Kanchan others, In the past few years among the govt employment related queries that we have received from Maharashtra, I have noted one common issue which happens while recruiting. After a person is selected in the tests interview, he/she undergoes a medical test at a govt hospital. Here the ophthalmologist, the various departments finally the CMO/civil surgeon, to my mind, should state the medical state of the person in the medical certificate. For people with impaired vision, the certificate should state the eyesight details, the extent of disability. Thats it. But we are told, that the doctors CMO also has to write in the medical certificate whether the person is fit or unfit to do the particular job. And for positions of lecturer school teacher in languages, people were declared unfit, and so their employer were not ready to give them appointment unless the certificate states they are fit for the job. If a medical professional has to decide this, then it defeats the reservation, the list of identified jobs and the necessity of HR /Personnel depts in the govt sector. We have also seen this practice in other states, offhand I remember hearing from a caller from Haryana. I am sure you other organisations working in the state know this. thanks and regards, Pranay Gadodia | Programme Manager Project Eyeway - A knowledge resource for living a fuller life with vision loss C/o Score Foundation, 17/107, Basement, Vikram Vihar, Lajpatnagar 4, New Delhi 110024, INDIA. [AI] ‘Undo injustice to visually impaired pers ons denied IAS'
hi to all positive development, things are improving a bit, now parliamentarians are also supporting our cause, PWD will be implemented in its latter and spirit let's continue our fight to obtain our due. Special Correspondent They have not been inducted despite clearing civil services exam Brinda Karat NEW DELHI: Seeking to draw the attention of the government to the case of two visually impaired persons, Ajit Kumar and Ashish Singh Thakur, who have not been inducted into the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) even after clearing the civil services examination, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP Brinda Karat sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Urges sympathy In her letter to Dr. Singh, the CPI(M) leader enclosed a letter from the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled urging him to consider the issue sympathetically and undo the injustice to the two people. “It is extremely unfortunate that two visually disabled persons have faced blatant discrimination at the hands of the insensitive authorities of the DoPT [Department of Personnel and Training], denying them IAS rank despite their eligibility. It is a shame that two persons who have succeeded after a hard personal struggle should be denied their due on grounds of their disability” Ms. Karat wrote in the letter. In its letter, the Platform said in April this year it had submitted a memorandum highlighting some of the pressing problems being faced by differently-abled persons. Drawing attention to the development with regard to these two, it said: “Non-induction of both these candidates into the IAS is not only a discrimination based on disability but also militates against the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995.” Direction unmet The Platform said both aspirants were forced to approach the Central Administrative Tribunal, which, on October 8, 2010, directed the DoPT to induct them within eight weeks. This direction has also not been complied with. source: http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/12/stories/2010121262401800.htm -- best regards you can also join me and my collections on www.inclusiveplanet.com I am running various channels there: readers! if you are intrested in social sciences you are most welcome there!. books, articles, news and views will be entertained there. do not miss the benefits: join soon! http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/group/447004 and I am also running channel journalism: media is a powerful mesanger between ruler and the ruled. hence its vigilence is very essential. we always hear and read, media is the forth state and very powerful to creat awareness among the masses. now question looms in our minds, are media fulfilling their responsibility impartially and successfully? we will observe and understand. in this channel your contribution is warmly welcome! http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/group/714689 avinash shahi M.A. political science centre for political studies school of social sciences Jawaharlal Nehru university, new delhi india e-mail: shahi88avin...@gmail.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Hi Pranay sir, This has happened in recruitment in banks also in the state of Maharashtra. I know a case where recruitment has been delayed by 6 months in a bank due to the same reason. This has happened in states like Delhi, Karnataka, Chennai also. That's why I always advise selected candidates in banks to go to medical check up with the notification, which clearly states that some percentage of jobs are reserved for VH, and their application, which shows they have applied under the said category. -- G. Re: [AI] Maharashtra Litigation
Hellow kanchan madam and Pranay Sir, In Maharashtra major problame is total ignorance of totally blind educationally and proffessionally able comunity for several posts like lecturar and clerk in case of fresh appointment and promotions. for these kind of posts though centeral government is regularly appoint and promote totally blind eligible candidate. in Maharashtra it never happens because these posts are not identified suitable for totally blind to work. though there is a lot of progress in case of accessive technology. screen readers for Hindi and Marathi are now available. several books in dasy format and e-text format on several topics are now available. but government authorities are not well aware about the new developements and skilfulness of totally bllind comunity. there dedication, knowledge and perfection in skill of computer operating. there strong willingness for hard work and dedication. We have to make aware them for these all things to change the setuation. Leading blind personalities and leading organizations may do this to change dark future of totally blind in Maharashtra. Re: [AI] Helping the blind get over their fear of water
Hey, that's great! I remember somebody asking on the list about how to learn swimming. So, this is quite possible. At 02:53 PM 12-12-10, you wrote: There are, people who are doing fantastic stuff. Here comes one more illustration. I loved the efforts, and though ive learned swimming from a general instructor, but would have loved to learn in his guidance as well if I was in Bangalore. I was at South End Circle one rainy day, when I saw a blind man accidentally step into a puddle and look absolutely shocked. Thats when I felt that maybe the visually challenged do suffer from water phobia, said Kumar. Kumar, who has been swimming since the past three years, then got in touch with an NGO at J P Nagar who in turn provided him with four visually challenged degree students. But why didnt he start with school children? I was apprehensive for the safety of visually impaired children, so I thought I would start with degree students. Earlier, the students were slightly scared to swim in even six to 10 feet of water, but now, they can easily swim in 50 feet of water, said the father of twin daughters. Soon, Kumar and 15 of his swimming colleagues started teaching four degree level blind students how to swim. But it wasnt all smooth sailing for the 38-year-old initially. At first, it was challenging as this was the first time they were doing something like this and I could see the anxiety on their faces. But for them, their ears are their eyes and they learnt from listening. So if they had to go in one particular direction, they would follow their instructors voice and move accordingly, he added. The number of students has increased to nine, with five more registering with them. We will start another batch from next week, he said. The group makes sure that their students are not put to any inconvenience. They come everyday barring Wednesdays. Usually, swimmers have to pay Rs 16 but we dont let the students pay. We foot the bill, he added. Kumar, who hails from Sakleshpur in Hassan district, also points out that swimming has advantages for the blind. Swimming helps a person to become more confident and courageous. Its more than an exercise as it teaches people to overcome hurdles. Kumar, who teaches techniques like freestyle and backstrokes has only one request. There are so many swimming pools in Bangalore and so many swimming coaches. If they come together to teach even a small percentage of the visually impaired how to swim, what a difference it would make. May his tribe increase I always wanted to play in water like everyone else, but could not. I always wanted to learn swimming, but never got an opportunity. But when Kumar sir came forward to teach us, I knew I had to go for it. I cannot express what I felt when I got into the pool the first time. But now, I feel confident. Ashok (22), final year BA student, St Josephs College I had a great fear of water. When Kumar sir volunteered to teach me, I was reluctant. But when my friends decided to learn swimming, I too decided to follow suit. I have overcome my fears now. I am proud of sir. May his tribe increase. Anil (23), a BCom graduate Swimming is a life-saving skill. More than getting into the water, its swimming in the right direction that makes all the difference. With people like Vasanth Kumar willing to help us out, I guess people like us will literally get to move in the right direction. Chandrashekar (23), who is doing a chartered accountants course Many people express sympathy with people like us. . But it is only a few who get into action. Kumar is one such person who converted thoughts into deeds. Sridhar (23) --- regards, Prateek agarwal. [AI] Lets congratulate Bijal Patel!
Hey friends! Our old list member Bijal Patel, tried to publish her first innovative and self written article on disable day, [3rd Dec, 2010]. She wanted to enter creative world and increase awareness in society towards disability through her writing. God is always in favor of such people. Only one difference was there. Media had converted her article in to third person narration and it was published in the famous newspaper of Gujarat, Divya Bhaskar. The article was only limited for South Gujarat. Now last but not the least, a mother of one blind boy was in search of modern technology for her son and after reading about her, she got contact of Bijal. So let's congratulate Bijal for her pen's success and giving new hope to someone. If you don't get time to pray, try to make people laugh! [AI] VICTORY!
Airhostess job restored *Calcutta, Dec. 10:* Calcutta High Court today directed Air India to allow Neepa Dhar, an airhostess who was sacked nine years ago for being overweight and allegedly mentally ill, to re-join work immediately. A division bench of Justice P.K. Roy and Justice M.K. Sinha also directed the airline to arrange a medical check-up for Dhar within two months and assign her a suitable job on ground on the basis of the doctors’ opinion. The bench asked the authorities to disburse her salary dues and corresponding benefits for the period between 2001 and 2010. Dhar, now 42, had joined Indian Airlines in 1987 as an airhostess. After 10 years of service, she started having problems flying. Doctors employed by the airline started her treatment. They opined that she had been suffering from “high altitude anxiety syndrome” and was unfit to fly. “Dhar was assigned ground duty. But her dereliction of duty prompted the airline authorities to send her again to the doctors. The panel said Dhar was overweight and suffering from a mental disease. So in June 2001, the authorities terminated her service,” said R.N. Majumdar, the lawyer who represented the airline. According to the doctors, Dhar was 15kg overweight when examined. Dhar’s counsel Madhumita Roy said: “My client had gained weight after taking the medicines prescribed by the doctors. Moreover, a patient suffering from mental illness can be termed disabled only after she develops more than 40 per cent of the disease. The Indian Airlines authorities never conducted any test to ascertain the percentage of her disability, if she was at all so.” In June 2001, Dhar moved the high court to challenge the termination order. In 2004, Justice G.C. Gupta upheld the decision taken by the airline. Dhar then moved the division bench to challenge the judgment. The division bench said: “According to the Persons With Disability (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995, no disabled person can be removed from his or her service.” Dhar told The Telegraph on Friday: “I have been fighting this legal battle for the past 10 years. But I never gave up hope. I was sure that I would get justice. Today, I am very happy. I am feeling great that I would be able to join Air India again.” http://www.telegraphindia.com/1101211/jsp/siliguri/story_13286578.jsp To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe.
