Hi All, Good news,

Concession in Rail Fares to Blind Persons and Mentally Retarded Persons
Extended in Rajdhani and Shatabdi Trains

24-June-2011 13:32 IST

The Ministry of Railways has decided to extend facility of concession
in

rail fare to completely blind persons and mentally retarded persons in
Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. The concession for both the categories
would
be 25 per cent in 3rd AC and AC Chair Car in Rajdhani and Shatabdi
trains.
Same concession will also be admissible to one escort accompanying such
person.

The concession will be effective on tickets purchased on or after
01.07.2011. In case of tickets already issued for travel on and after
01.07.2011 refund of difference of fares will not be admissible.

Presently the concession in rail fair for both the category of persons
is

75
per cent in Sleeper Class, AC Chair Car 3rd AC and 50 per cent in 2nd
AC
1st AC in all trains except Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. Same
concession
is also admissible to one escort accompanying such person.

For availing concession by blind persons, certificate in prescribed
proforma
issued by RMP or Government Doctor or Head of the Institution for Blind
listed in IRCA Coaching Tariff is required and for mentally retarded
persons
also certificate issued by a Government in prescribed proforma is
required.

Best Regards,

Nilesh

Subject: [AI] A New Company for Audio Books in Indian Languages.

Hello,

I recently found an Indian company producing audio books. This
Bangalore-based company has meanwhile brought out some Bangali, Kannada
and English audio books. the prices range from Rs. 100 to 400. You can
listen to samples online. You can also purchase online. I think, it's a
good news and so I am sharing it with you, in spite of its commercial
status. Check the site for yourself at

www.bookstalk.in

Recently a Bengali audio book has been produced in Kolkata. It's a great
performance. But the company has not produced any thing in last six
months.

[AI] Google docs is manageable!

2011-06-25 Thread Amar Jain
Dear All,
In these couple of weeks I have been getting queries on managing google docs
with screen readers.
It is a fact that for all those who are in corporate sector, Google Docs is
something without which they can’t survive in longer run. Nor you can ask the
employer to change the solutions for whole company, just because you have
problem.
So a remedy needs to be worked out.
Let me tell you that there exists various plugins for google docs, the famous
ones are google cloud connect, and offy sync.
Google Cloud Connect hereinafter refered as GCC for the sake of brevity, is a
toolbar which gets included into your word, excel and powerpoint.
It is manageable with Jaws curser.
I have tested in office 2010 running jaws 12.
The next plugin is Offi Sync, for short ‘OS’. Smart and accessible plugin,
which comes as a menu in your office apps. Fairly manageable with Jaws.
Last option is to deal with directly its web interface. And that is where the
conflict comes in.
99.99% users say that it is impossible to deal with google docs in its own web
interface, but I am in the remaining users, who say that its not impossible,
the way of approaching it is different.
I created a new document, entered text, saved it, and shared it.
I gave description to the document.
I could not deal with organize settings.
Whilesharing, I kept the permission for others as ‘can view’. Means, they
can view the document but cannot edit.
So far my experience with it is very good.
Regards
Amar Jain.

[AI] Score Foundation vs. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) 25th June 2011

2011-06-25 Thread Katie Turner
Today a hearing took place between Score Foundation and Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) regarding the provisions given to disabled
candidates undertaking the Central Teacher Eligibility Test on 26th June.

Score Foundation and Prateek Jain, a candidate appearing for the CTET on
Sunday, approached the court for quashing the advertisement issued by the
CBSE on April 9. The advertisement had not mentioned any measures, such as
providing visually challenged candidates with extra time to produce the
certificate.

Score Foundation’s request that the advertisement be quashed and the exam be
stayed until the proper provisions and guidelines for disabled candidates
were in place was refused. However, the Court ordered that CBSE should
ensure that scribes are provided in all centres, or, in case there is a
shortage of scribes at the Examination Centre, the candidates should be
allowed to provide their own scribes.

The Court also ordered that candidates should not be expected to visit the
Examination Centre a day in advance of the examination. Candidates are also
only required to provide their disability certificate as confirmation of
their disability and need for a scribe and *would not* be required to
provide an additional note from a Medical Officer.

The Court requested that CBSE publish the news about provisions for disabled
candidates in the media. CBSE are also required to inform all Centre
Superintendents to provide the necessary provisions to the disabled
candidate on the basis of disability certificate produced at the time of the
examination, after producing the admit card.

Re: [AI] Which scanner should I buy to scan books?

2011-06-25 Thread Pranav Lal
Aditi,

You have a few things to consider.
1. Do you need portability? If so, then a small Canon scanner or a camera
based scanner may be options worth considering.

2. What is the size of documents that you will scan? For instance, if most
of the documents you will scan are legal sized, then you should buy a
scanner that can support that size.

3. Do you want a flatbed scanner or a camera scanner like what Amar
described? I have heard good things about the camera scanning appliances on
the market but do your homework before you buy. Remember, buyer beware.

4. Besides cannon, consider book edge scanners from companies like Plustek.

5. Do you need your scanner to nbe on a LAN? If so, factor that in too.

Hi Amar,

You are out of luck. You will need a screen reader based remote management
solution. Installing jaws should not be too difficult.

One wild shot that you could try is showmypc from www.showmypc.com I think.
The client interface is accessible for sure.

Bijal,

No, no and no. You can use your thumb impression and they wont give you a
second glance. The fun starts if you want a passport under the tatkal scheme
(I hope I am spellinhg that correctly); however, that has nothing to do with
your being blind.

The procedure for application is well document on passport.nic.in.

Re: [AI] Score Foundation vs. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) 25th June 2011

2011-06-25 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

This is indeed a good news. I don't understand why CBSE fails to
include such facilities in their competitive examinations, which are
otherwise available in their Board Examinations? For instance, I have
a profficiency test next week. This is being organised for all
students of class X (now in class XI), and is a National Level
Competitive Examination. However, the circulars or the guidelines do
not mention a word about what special facilities does the Board
propose to provide for the differently abled students. As it is, the
schools are closed, and the board officials are difficult to contact.
Kindly advise what to do in this regard.

Subject: [AI] Score Foundation vs. Central Board of Secondary Education
 (CBSE) 25th June 2011

The judgement can be downloaded from
