Just a thought to share:

I was wondering if there were others like me who would like to take a day
or

more to look around the bounty God's own country offers while we traverse
to attend the A I convention. If there are, we could share thoughts and
ideas on the same on the following lines:

Before or after the convention.

Where and work on details like travel and package deals etc.

If we could work something out through the list, Harish could then collate

[AI] Know how your UID is generated

2011-08-13 Thread Renuka Warriar
The Hindu : Today's Paper / NATIONAL : Know how your UID is generated
BANGALORE, August 13, 2011

Know how your UID is generated

DEEPA KURUP

Here's what happens behind the scenes of this gargantuan project

Eyes on you: Biometrics include capturing three sets of fingerprints and an
image of the iris. - File photo
Eyes on you: Biometrics include capturing three sets of fingerprints and an
image of the iris. - File photo

At the Aadhaar technology centre in Marathahalli, a large team of technologists
and software developers hack away at code that forms the backbone of India's
most ambitious citizen enrolment project seeking to create a biometric
inventory of the second most populous country in the world.

Bangalore, which hosts both the Tech Centre and the Central Identities Data
Repository, will now see the project go live with many more enrolment centres
and a steady ramp-up planned in coming weeks. The project, currently under way
in select post offices here and in its final phase in Mysore and Tumkur
districts, has around 592 enrolment stations across the State, a number that
will go up to over 800 in a month, top officials of the Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI) told The Hindu .

An exercise that has drawn criticism primarily over privacy concerns and the
lack of a cost-benefit analysis has courted ample controversy. But going by
the large number of people queuing up at Bangalore's General Post Office on any
weekday, this 12-digit number has indeed drawn public interest. But how
is this number generated? What happens behind the scenes of this gargantuan
project?

The process

Every citizen first goes through the step of document verification. Following
this, demographic data on the citizen, classified under Know Your Resident
(KYR) and KYR+ (which are questions added on by the registrar) is entered into
the Aadhaar client. A simple software client developed by the UIDAI, the
Aadhaar client stores demographic data before moving on to the more complicated
process of recording and storing biometric data.

Biometrics include capturing three sets of fingerprints, four fingers on both
hands and two thumbs, and an image of the iris. In the case of fingerprints,
a maximum of four tries are allowed; with agricultural workers or labourers or
the elderly, when the lines are not clear enough, this is a problem.

The entire enrolment process is conducted offline. Once the enrolment is
complete, the package is first encrypted using a 256-bit session encryption key.
Then, a 1,024-bit UIDAI public key is used to encrypt, the private key for
which is stored within the application at the Aadhaar data centre, used by the
machine only during processing.

After adding an additional layer of tamper-proofing, the packet is exported to
the Aadhaar data centre in Marathahalli to be processed using external hard
disks or securely uploaded electronically. This data can neither be tampered
with nor opened, assures a senior UIDAI technology official, adding that
even data centre administrators do not have access to the data.

Securely stored

At the UIDAI Tech Centre, enrolment packets from across the country arrive to
be processed daily. After the number is generated, after de-duplication, the
data is stored by the CIDR at its secure back-end. This data centre is the
permanent abode for Aadhaar data, and houses servers and equipment that are
remotely managed from the tech centre.

A second such data centre, which will also serve as a back-up and a repository
for enrolments in the north Indian States, is currently coming up in New
Delhi, officials said.

[AI] accessibility of flah contents in online examinations

2011-08-13 Thread mukesh jain
Hello,
I would like to know about the accessibility of the flash based
contents with screen reader jaws. In my PGDBA course, I have to submit
my assignments online. In the said assignments, there are five types
of questions appears on the screen:
1 multiple options multiple choices,
2 multiple options single choice
3 true/false
4 fill in the blanks
5 match the following

in the first type, there are four options are presented and I have to
choose out of four two/three correct answers. In the second type, one
answer is to be selected out of four options. In the third type, one
option needs to be dragged and dropped down in the blank space
provided in the option. In the fourth type, I need to select the
option true/false for the statement provided and in the fifth type,
there are four options given in the left side and six options in the
right side I need to match four options with the options given at the
right side.

While reading this assignment, I have learnt that all the above
options for the questions are presented in the flash button format.
Bringing the arrow on the appropriate button to answer the question
and hitting the space bar on it, jaws does not announce anything that
whether the right button is been selected or not. When I showed my
chosen options to my sighted colleague he reported that another option
is been selected witch I have not ought to select.

So I would like to know that does anyone has the experience of giving
the exam online in flash button format? If so please tell me that do I
have to make any adjustments/settings in jaws configuration to make
this content more accessible?

Please advise me on my query.

Your kind cooperation in this regard would be highly solicited.

Re: [AI] Gareebrath: Ticket issuing on the births reserved in handicapquota?

2011-08-13 Thread Rohiet A. Patil

Dear amar,
As per my knowledge, rail authority has clear cut guide lines regarding
issuing the reservations in handicap quotas for trains like garibrath. I
also remember that some one has posted the same on AI itself. But,
unfortunetly, nither I remember the person's name nor the posting months. I
request that person to forward the same once again. Or you may search them
in old mails. I can tell you what I remember. I read some thing like for
booking reservations in this quota, we have to present our concession
certificate on the counter.

Please get in touch with me for more information.

Subject: [AI] Gareebrath: Ticket issuing on the births reserved in
handicapquota?

Dear All,
We are aware that railways provide concession in fair; and few reserved
births in the handicap quota.
I am aware that no concession in gareebrath’s fair is allowed. However,
while enquired online using the accommodation availability through
indianrail.gov.in, (seat availability), I could find that 4 births in
handicap quota are reserved for us.
But when I tried booking my ticket through reservation counter in those
four handicap quota births, I was refused by saying that since no
concession is allowed in this train, therefore no tickets in this quota
can be issued. Needless to say approached the chief booking supervisor,
along with other higher authorities of the station, but they take the same
stand. Despite trying level best, I could not get their refusal in
writing. Anyways, that is good for saying but in practice hardly anyone
would take responsibilities on his shoulders.
Now my question: As now a days handicap quota births are reserved (or to
be specific the births of the handicap compartment are reserved), is this
refusal justified?
If the answer to above is in the affirmative, then why the enquiry system
shows four births reserved in handicap quota?
Be very clear that I am not asking for concession in fair, but I am asking
reservation on the births reserved in this quota after paying the full
fair.

Response awaited.
Amar Jain.

Just a thought to share:

I was wondering if there were others like me who would like to take a
day

or
more to look around the bounty God's own country offers while we
traverse

to attend the A I convention. If there are, we could share thoughts and
ideas on the same on the following lines:

Before or after the convention.

Where and work on details like travel and package deals etc.

If we could work something out through the list, Harish could then
collate

the information and formulate a plan of action.

Hi Payal, I was also thinking on the same line and your idea is fully
agreeable to me, and I am very much eager to join such group. There is no
point in going to such a distant place just for two days. Please communicate
if any thing gets crystallized.

Re: [AI] C5 Question.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you need the lisenced version of
quickoffice in order to access the edit mode. In other word, the
default quickoffice viewer installed on phones by default will not
work without activating the program with a lisence key. Note that
activation is different from the registration.

Re: [AI] Gareebrath: Ticket issuing on the births reserved in handicapquota?

2011-08-13 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
When I encounter such issues, I usually do the following:

1. If the reservation counter persons continue to refuse, then try to
get in touch with the station director or similar position. I forget
the exact designation.

2. If it fails, then launch a complain to the director of your railway
devision through registered post. Make sure to attach an
acknowledgment card. Also send a copy of the letter to the associated
station. You may be able to find the address of your railway devision
online.

 Dear amar,
As per my knowledge, rail authority has clear cut guide lines regarding
issuing the reservations in handicap quotas for trains like garibrath. I
also remember that some one has posted the same on AI itself. But,
unfortunetly, nither I remember the person's name nor the posting months. I
request that person to forward the same once again.

 Amar Jain.
