Re: [AI] Experience of jaws and kurzweil users with windows 7

2011-10-28 Thread Phen Varghese
Dear Friend,

If you are telling about JAWS and Kurzweil there is no difference.
If you are telling between windows xp and windows 7 there is some
difference like the start menu and the open dialog box while attaching
a file or folder.
JAWS and Kurzweil accessability is the same in windows xp and windows 7.

Regards,

Phen Varghese

2011-10-28 Thread Umesha Economics
I think it need not be sent to personal mail box since it is informative to
more people including myself. I think list members agree with me that we
were in the era of Win XP for last several years. but now the buzz word is
Win7 and some technological changes have made it inevitable for slow
learners like me to switch over to Win 7. So, I hope it can usefully
discussed in the list within the framework of list guidelines.

Hi,
This is very pertinant question with regard to technological
innovations and advancements. To avoid inconvenience in future I want
to ask a question from those who are using or have used windows 7.
What are their experiences with this windows?
How better it is then windows xp? Please do tell that kurzweil and
jaws are working fine on windows 7? Please tell also that weather fine
reader and zoomtext is compatible to it or not. Is there any
particular software which is available with windows 7 and was not with
xp? or vis versa.
If any other relevant information is there, may be given offline on my
personal mail please.

Re: [AI] Digital cameras for scanning books

2011-10-28 Thread Umesha Economics

Friends,
by digital camera I meant the camera with still images (Photos). As per my
knowledge, all the digital cameras with video recording facility have the
option to take still images. In fact I am experimenting a little bit about
it. your knowledge and experience will add to it greatly.

some of the fellow members mentioned the products like KNFB reader and
others. As the information I got from Ram Agarwal, KNFB reader is no longer
available as a stand alone device and it is a software. moreover, I hope no
one will object if I say that those products are expensive to middle class
people. Most of us have Kurzweil, a good user-friendly software. all that
one needs is a device that feeds it with compatible images of printed pages.
We can get a good quality camera for 15000 - 2 Rs. and it will be
economic when compared to one with 7 Rs. As you know, Kurzweil does not
take long time to recognize images. much of the time is consumed in scanning
and it requires lot of patience to hold the books firmly on the scanner bed,
that too, large books like those with 1000 to 1500 pages. in addition to
that, some persons require that the binding of the books borrowed from them
are not damaged.
I don't know about Umax and portable scanner with Karishma. how much time
they take to scan a full A4 page? do they do it in 1 or 2 seconds?

I request all the members to contribute their knowledge on the matter.

very good for recognition of voluminous books. But the cost of that

Friends you did not understand my real question. that's why I changed the

I am also using HP scanner from past 6 years. but it takes about 45 to 50
seconds to scan a page using them whereas we capture an image in a
digital

camera within a second. so if we can use thus obtained images of pages of
our books, I hope that we can greatly save time. presently I have to scan
about 1 pages of my printed books which requires me more than 100

So, to conclude, all the brands available in the market are good. No

Hi all,

New iPhone a breakthrough for blind people

The iPhone has grabbed widespread attention for its sleek design,
revolutionary multitouch display and countless apps.

Not as well known is this: It's the only smartphone that blind people
can use out of the box.

That has local advocates downright giddy about the iPhone 4S, Apple's
latest creation hitting stores today with an advanced voice-command
feature called Siri.

"The blindness community is really hyped about what (the iPhone) does
now and what it can do in the future," said Wes Majerus, a technology
specialist and instructor at the nonprofit Colorado Center for the
Blind. "There is a lot of hype about Siri."

Early reviews suggest Siri is a technological breakthrough, although
it could use some tinkering.

Siri responds to spoken commands such as "Set my timer for 30
minutes," but it struggles with questions like "When is the next
flight to Denver from San Francisco?"

Apple says the software is still in beta, or test, mode. The company's
video promoting the feature concludes with a blind woman responding to
a text message simply by speaking to her iPhone.

"There's something to be said for being on the move and just pulling
out the phone and dictating a text to somebody and getting it sent
off," said Majerus, who is blind and owns an iPhone 4.

An estimated 240,000 Colorado residents are blind or visually
impaired, according to the American Council of the Blind.

Apple first made its popular smartphone accessible to blind people in
2009 with the iPhone 3GS. VoiceOver was a standard feature on the
device and subsequent updates. When the option is activated, the
iPhone speaks almost everything that otherwise would be read on screen
by the user, such as e-mails, phone numbers and letters on the virtual
keyboard when they are tapped.

"The iPhone is the only fully accessible handset that a blind person
can buy," said Chris Danielsen, a spokesman for the National
Federation of the Blind, a nonprofit advocacy organization. "Android
has some accessibility capabilities, but they don't work as well as
Apple."

Before the iPhone 3GS, blind people had to purchase expensive
third-party applications to make their cellphone accessible, Danielsen
said.

In addition to working out of the box, the iPhone has access to apps
that support the VoiceOver option. There are also a number of
third-party apps designed for blind people, such as LookTel's Money
Reader app, which identifies currency with the iPhone's camera and
speaks the denomination.

Danielsen, who is blind, plans to switch from a Nokia phone to the
iPhone 4S. Siri is just one reason.

"Apple is rolling out a bunch of new features that are going to
enhance the ability of blind people to use the iPhone," he said,
referencing the release of iOS 5, Apple's latest mobile operating
system.

The new features include clearer speech technology and the ability to
add a custom spoken label to buttons and commands. In addition to
powering the iPhone 4S, iOS 5 was released this week as a free update
for the i

[AI] Fwd: comments on Hindi TTS

2011-10-28 Thread Shona Man
Hi friends I recieved this mail from hindi tts support team, which was
recently released. Please read the mail.

-- Forwarded message --
From: TTS Support
Date: Fri, 28 Oct 2011 18:00:55 +0630
Subject: comments on Hindi TTS
To: shonam...@gmail.com
Cc: nagarajan.madas...@gmail.com

Hi,

We saw your comments on Access India about the Hindi TTS.
We checked the BBC Hindi with the software and it is reading but a little
slow. Once you change the english voice, it takes some time to load the Hindi
voice. The software needs 2GB RAM else you will have to wait for sometime for
it to read.

We agree that the software is slow. This is because we tried to keep the
quality. This is the first version of the software. Next version we are making
it faster and make it support english completely. Please compare NVDA Espeak
Hindi voice and this Hindi voice. Please comment on the quality of speech and
give us more feedback, so that we can work on it on the next phase.
We appreciate the way you respond to the software. We know we have a long way
to go. But this is the first time, government has made such an initiation, so
that we can provide the software for free to the users.

A visually challenged person, Mr. Nagarajan M, is employed with us, to help us
make this software. With his feedbacks only, we have developed till here. He
is very good in using this software now. I am copying him in this email.
He is also a member of Access India. If you are facing difficulty in using the
software he can help you.

The main drawbacks of our software, as you all have mentioned is the speed and
english support. This will be taken care in the next release of the software.
But we had hoped that this software has good quality on the Indian languages.
Please sent in your feedbacks to support-...@lantana.tenet.res.in

Please forward this to Access India also.

Thanks & Regards,
TTS Group

hai friend, I do understand your need. But as per my knowledge the portable
device is knfb reader which could be used on a mobile. The scanning machine
which you mentioned may be the one by freedom scientific. It has a normal size
of a scanner and a hard disc. It can only scan and reproduce the same in voice
as JAWS does. A few weeks back there was a news about intel. They are about to
market portable machines which takes photos and convert them into text. But we
have to wait for it. The best available option at present is the apple IPhones
which reads text in a cleare voice. But I am not sure whether it can scan and
store them. Any way it is very good to read a book.
With regards
Jaison Bellarmine.
Friends,
by digital camera I meant the camera with still images (Photos). As per my
knowledge, all the digital cameras with video recording facility have the
option to take still images.

Hi all,
pasting below article, which get from another list.
Regards

-- Forwarded message --

hi friends,
The following is the news published 27-10-2011 on park forest about the 1st
patient got treatment this week. let cheack it... this is for info only.

United Kingdom--(ENEWSPF)--27 October 2011. The first patient to receive
gene therapy for an incurable type of blindness was treated at the John
Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford this week as part of a trial led by Oxford
University.

*Story continues below:*

*eNews Park Forest is an independently owned and operated electronic
publication and has no affiliation whatsoever with the governing bodies of
the Village of Park Forest.*

If successful, the advance could lead to the first-ever treatment for
choroideraemia, a progressive form of genetic blindness that first arises in
childhood and is estimated to affect over 100,000 people worldwide.

‘This disease has been recognised as an incurable form of blindness since it
was first described over a hundred years ago. I cannot describe the
excitement in thinking that we have designed a genetic treatment that could
potentially stop it in its tracks with one single injection,’ says Professor
Robert MacLaren, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and
an honorary consultant at the Oxford Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye
Hospital, who is leading the trial.

Jonathan Wyatt, 63, an arbitration lawyer from Bristol had the surgery at
the Oxford Eye Hospital based at the John Radcliffe – the main NHS centre
for this trial. He is the first of 12 people in this initial human trial
that will receive the novel gene therapy.

Mr Wyatt was diagnosed with choroideraemia in his late teens and has
suffered progressive sight loss ever since. He now sees only blackness
except for a small area of a few degrees in diameter in the centre of his
vision.

Choroideraemia is a genetic disease that leads to progressive degeneration
of the retina in the eye. It generally affects males only and there is no
treatment. The diagnosis is usually made in childhood and leads to blindness
in men by their forties. It occurs due to deficiency of the REP1 gene
located on the X chromosome.

The novel gene treatment was developed by Professor MacLaren at Oxford
University in collaboration with Professor Miguel Seabra at Imperial College
London. It is designed to provide the gene missing in people with
choroideraemia to stop the deterioration that gradually leads to blindness.

It uses a virus essentially as a delivery vehicle that ferries DNA including
the missing gene into the right part of the eye. The virus has been
engineered to infect the light-sensitive cells in the retina known as
photoreceptors. There the gene is switched on and becomes active.

With this particular gene therapy, the treatment could provide a one-off
permanent correction of the disease because the gene is thought to remain in
the retinal cells indefinitely.

‘This trial represents the world’s first ever attempt to treat this disease
and the first time that gene therapy has been directed towards the
light-sensitive photoreceptor cells of the human retina,’ says Professor
MacLaren. ‘This represents a major breakthrough and is highly significant
for patients who are losing sight from other photoreceptor diseases, such as
retinitis pigmentosa.’

The trial will see 12 patients undergo surgery in which the gene therapy is
injected into one eye. The other eye would then act as a control against
which to assess any treatment effect. The researchers would however aim to
go on to treat the second eye, should the treatment be proven to be
effective.

The aim of the trial is primarily to assess safety, but it will also gain
initial data on how effective the treatment is. The researchers estimate
that it will take two years to know whether or not the degeneration has been
stopped completely by the gene therapy.

‘While safety appears so far to be fine, the efficacy of the gene therapy
will only be evident after 24 months. We need this time to measure any
effect as the degeneration caused by choroideraemia is slow,’ explains
Professor MacLaren.

The clinical trial is funded by a grant awarded to the University of Oxford
by the Health Innovation Challenge Fund – a translational award scheme
funded jointly by the Wellcome Trust and the Department of Health.

Professor Seabra, who played a key role at Imperial College London in
identifying the gene causing choroideraemia and in eliciting the mechanism
of cell death in the retina, comments: ‘The ability to offer a gene
replacement treatment for these patients was the final objective of 20 y

Compared to just about all the other downloaders CNET has. This is the
only one that outperforms all of them. Believe me i have tried them
all. The highest
I got on download is 1.2 mb per second and usual is around 745 to 800

Re: [AI] Digital cameras for scanning books

2011-10-28 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi,

1. You need sighted assistance to photograph pages with a digital camera.
The problem comes in aligning the document consistently and keeping it
there. If you can solve that you will be good to go. Consider using a
monopod to mount the camera. Lighting is another potential issue. Use a
digital camera with an autofocus.
2. Your best option is to look at camera scanners such as the pearl.

[AI] FW: [Blindmath] Announcing SVGExplore01 from the creator of SVGDraw01

Subject: [Blindmath] Announcing SVGExplore01 from the creator of SVGDraw01

SVGExplore01 is a program designed to allow blind users to explore drawings
created using SVGDraw01 by using sound in conjunction with an embossed grid
system on a computer touchpad. This message describes a prototype "mouse"
version of the program.

Version 0.0.1 20111028
Table of contents

Welcome to the prototype version of SVGExplore01
This is a mouse version of the program
User instructions
This is not an SVG drawing
Packaging
Downloading and running the program
Please provide feedback

Welcome to the prototype version of SVGExplore01

This is a prototype version of the program.

The program is posted at
http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/SWT-SVG/SVGDraw01.zip and is available for
immediate downloading.

This program makes it possible for blind users to trace out the shapes in a
drawing by moving a finger on an embossed grid system while listening to
stereo sounds emitted by the program.

Audio hints are provided to help the user acquire the different shapes in a
drawing. Once the user has touched a location on the touchpad that
corresponds to the border of a shape, a series of stereo audio pulses makes
it possible for the user to trace out the shape with the finger on the
embossed grid.

My hope is that this will provide an economical "quick look" alternative to
the use of fully embossed drawings for the purpose of allowing the user to
form a mental image of the shapes in the drawing.

Each shape in the drawing emits pulses with a different audio frequency.
This is the mechanism by which the user can distinguish one shape in the
drawing from the other shapes in the drawing.

This is a mouse version of the program

A fully operational touchpad version of the program is still in development.
I am providing a mouse version at this time to allow potential users of the
program to get a taste of how it works. I am hopeful that those users will
try it out and provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.

User instructions

I will explain how to download and run the program later in this document.

In addition to a Windows computer with stereo speakers or headphones, you
will need a mouse and (optionally) a sheet of paper embossed with a
rectangular grid system. Emboss horizontal and vertical grid lines on the
paper at approximately one-half-inch intervals. If you don't have an
embosser, use a tracing wheel, a straight edge and an ice pick, or whatever
works for you to create tactile grid lines. It will probably work best if
you tape the grid paper to the tabletop to keep it from moving.

Start the program running using the instructions provided later in this
document.

Grasp the mouse in your right hand with your thumb touching the upper-left
corner of the grid. Try to hold the mouse so that the front-to-back axis of
the mouse is parallel to the left edge of the grid.

Press the 'h' key with your left hand. That will position the mouse pointer
in the upper-left corner of the drawing. Any time you feel lost you can
repeat that procedure to reposition the mouse pointer in the upper-left
corner to get your bearings again.

If you move the mouse to the right while dragging your thumb along the top
edge of the grid (or along any horizontal grid line), you will (sometimes)
hear a deep rumble in both ears similar to a motorcycle idling. Whenever you
hear that sound, it means that there is a shape somewhere along a vertical
line that is parallel to the left edge of the grid and below (or above) the
mouse pointer. Note that you will only hear sounds when the mouse pointer is
moving.

To acquire a shape with the mouse pointer (when you hear the motorcycle),
slowly move the mouse in a zig-zag pattern from the top of the grid towards
the bottom of the grid. Pay attention to the position of your thumb in the
grid system in order to identify the location of the shape.

When you have acquired the boundary of a shape with the mouse pointer, you
will hear a series of pulses with a frequency or pitch that is higher than
the motorcycle sound.

There are three pitches associated with each shape. In addition, the three
pitches associated with one shape are readily distinguishable from the three
pitches associated with each of the other shapes.

When you have placed the mouse pointer squarely on the center line of the
boundary of a shape, you will hear a series of pulses at a pitch that I will
refer to as the center pitch. When the mouse pointer is slightly below the
center line, you will hear a slightly higher pitch. This means that you
should slowly move the mouse toward the top of the grid to place the mouse
pointer on the center line. When the mouse pointe

Mr Yadav, no crack version of any software works upon windows 7 64 bit
platform!
Why did u not perchased 32 bit windows, the solution for that, in my
view is the either u install windows xp or windows 7 with 32 bit. Or
use NVDA upon it.

Re: [AI] Nokia learns from apple, launches free screen reader.

2011-10-28 Thread harbhajan singh
hai friends i have come to know from another mailing list that the up
coming screen reader from nokia will be exactly the same as mobile
accessibility for android. if this happens the user will be able to
use some of main apps such as telephone ,contect, clock, web, log,
etc. there will be limited or no support for any third party
application. other than this we will have to use nuance vocaliser
voices.
Regards
harbhajan

Compared to just about all the other downloaders CNET has. This is the
only one that outperforms all of them. Believe me i have tried them
all. The highest
I got on download is 1.2 mb per second and usual is around 745 to 800
kb. It does get slower at times but usually during high bandwidth
usage and heavy
internet usage but I am very pleased with this program. Give it a try.
i think you will be amazed.

From Download.com By edcal4121 Sep 29,2007

Orbit Downloader improves your Internet connection not only by making
it faster and more reliable, but also by providing you with a more
comfortable way
to download Youtube videos, streaming content and even files from free
hosting sites. It hardly uses any system resources and is perfectly
embedded into
your favourite web browser.

From FileForum By Ian C Sep 7,2007

I only just isolated the full screen exit problems I was having to
OrbitDownloader and they've fixed it!! Yay, I can keep using
it!!!Awesome app!

From FileForum By Polychronopolis Aug 26,2007

Social site downloading is the main appeal of this program. It
supports HTTP(S), FTP, Metalink, RTSP, PNM, MMS, NSS, RTMP, embedded
video from sites like
YouTube, music from sites like Pandora, and files from sites like
Rapidshare. It works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Netscape,
and Maxthon. Freeware.

From Mashable.com Aug 3,2007

The Grab++ module will scan for anything that is being played in your
browser, whether it is an audio, video, or flash, and autodetect the
download link
(only caveat: Grab++ has to be run before the media file is played).
This is (a) unbelievably cool, and (b) reason enough for me to switch
from Flashget,
hitherto my favorite downloader, to Orbit Downloader. Will download
WMV and RM streaming video.

From freewaregenius.com Jun 20,2007

It is a virtual Swiss Army Knife for youtube video fans. It is the
greatest youtube downloader. Not just youtube, it can download all
video online. It is
a full article of its own. I love it.

From Neowin.net By fishlover & darkpuma Apr 25,2007

It is an unexceptionable tool to download youtube and iFilm. And it
can download embedded youtube video — supernatural!

hi Vamshi, post your Laptop Model Number and Y-5 Module serial. you
can find them on your Quote of Dell which they had sent you before
purchasing. you could also find them in the papers sent to you. there
would be absolutely no problem in procuring them.
