Re: [AI] Conditional formatting

2012-02-13 Thread Suman Dogra
You can find out about the conditional formatting and color through JAWS:
1. Use INSERT+V to open adjust JAWS Options dialog. In latest
versions of JAWS the name of this dialog is changed.
2. toggle font, color and attribute changes to ON state and also,
format conditions detection to ON state.
The above steps will help detect the conditional formatting.

Thanks

for persons without disability.

· Computer education for the persons with vision impairment enables them in
their basic education, higher education, research, daily living and employment.

· In today’s environment with paper less offices and information available in
the internet, computers represent freedom for the persons with vision
impairment.

· There are very few schools and institutions offering computer training for
persons with vision impairment

· More importantly there are very few trainers who teach computers and IT for
the persons with vision impairment

· Also, there is no standardized formal curriculum. Hence quality IT education
cannot be guaranteed.

To address this gap, in 2005, Enable India started Training the Trainers course
for trainers who will teach computers to the persons with vision impairment.
This program was launched to enhance the teaching methodologies of the trainers
in various aspects of computers.

This TOT is being conducted for the teachers of different schools, NGOs &
individuals who will provide computer training for visually impaired children &
adults. The course provides training on general teaching techniques and
specific teaching techniques for the persons with vision impairment using
screen readers, industry orientation and usage of right resource aids. The
trainers are equipped with a standard curriculum that they can follow at their
respective ins

Free Anti-Tracking Tool Meets Growing Demand for Private Browsing
By Adam Dickter
February 9, 2012 4:28PM

Once they have built up a base of free users, Abine hopes that at
least 1 percent to 2 percent will upgrade to premium services down the
road, making the undertaking worthwhile. The basic model of Abine's Do
Not Track Plus, however, will always remain free, Abine promises.

With concern about tracking and malware on the rise, a Boston-based
company that creates privacy tools is offering a free program it says
will keep your browsing out of the public domain.
The company, Abine, says its Do Not Track Plus browser tool will not
only fend off advertisers who want to monitor your shopping habits and
show you which companies and technologies are spying on you on the
various sites you visit, but also quadruple your browser speed.

"Online tracking is a very real thing, even though you can't see it,"
said Abine in a company blog post announcing the tool Thursday.

What's the Catch?

Abine is upfront about its intentions in offering the product free.

"We have a 'freemium' model, meaning that we offer a free base service
(DNT+) and separate paid upgrades, such as our DeleteMe service that
removes our customers' personal information from public Web sites,"
the company writes. "We are also working on another software offering
called PrivacySuite that's currently in beta, but it will have premium
upgradeable features like forwarded e-mails and phone numbers."

Once they have built up a base of free users, Abine hopes that at
least 1 percent to 2 percent will upgrade to premium services down the
road, making the undertaking worthwhile. The basic model of Do Not
Track Plus, however, will always remain free, Abine promises.

For $99 a year, the DeleteMe service regularly checks people-search
databases to remove customers' names, sending regular reports. Abine
also has apps coming soon that allow a single log-in to sites with
one click and to protect e-mail and phone numbers by "automatically
generating unique forwarding contact info for each site."

Abine is not alone in offering free privacy tools. Yahoo! offers
Anti-Spy, a spyware and malware removal program by Computer
Associates, as part of its browser toolbar. Microsoft 's Internet
Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox have each added new privacy features in
recent updates.

Do Not Track Plus is available for download from www.abine.com . A
guided tour video is also available.

Is Resistance Futile?

Companies that track aren't necessarily concerned about the relatively
small number of people using anti-tracking tools at this point, said
Jules Polonetsky, co-chairman and director of the Future of Privacy
Forum.

"Most companies are fine with those who don't want to be tracked and
with privacy-sensitive users taking steps," Polonetsky said. "Should
there one day be a time when a majority of people are using these
tools they may have to find an alternative revenue stream, like
charging people for access to sites or giving people an incentive to
be tracked and allowing them to use their data ."

With privacy issues dominating headlines lately, Polonetsky said, "we
are seeing an increasing number of these tools on the market, such as
Ghostery and Privacy Choice, and venture capitalists are seeing an
uptick in interest in tools that give users more control over their
data."

[AI] Tips for handling not responding problems

2012-02-13 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi
Quoting this article which failed get to the list.
It sounds pretty technical, nevertheless, for those who can get 2 cents out of
it. Rest don't get worked up and think you seem to be stupid.
Harish Kotian
Quoting:

We all get error message like this "Windows Explorer is not responding" One of
the reason is because the system is in a deadlock situation. To discover

Deadlock
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Process_deadlock

Both processes need both resources. P1 requires additional resource R1, P2
requires additional resource R2; neither process can continue.

A deadlock is a situation wherein two or more competing actions are each
waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does.

In an
operating system,
a deadlock is a situation which occurs when a process enters a waiting
state
because a
resource
requested by it is being held by another waiting process, which in turn is
waiting for another resource. If a process is unable to change its state
indefinitely
because the resources requested by it are being used by other waiting process,
then the system is said to be in a deadlock.
[1]

Deadlock is a common problem in
multiprocessing
 systems,
parallel computing
 and
distributed systems,
where software and hardware
locks
are used to handle shared resources and implement
process synchronization.
[2]

In
telecommunication systems,
deadlocks occur mainly due to lost or corrupt signals instead of resource
contention.

]Examples

Deadlock situation can be compared to the classic "
chicken or egg"
problem.
[4]

It can be also considered a paradoxical "
Catch-22"
situation.
[5]

A real world analogical example would be an
illogical
statute
 passed by the
Kansas
legislature in early 20th century which stated:
[1]
[6]

"
When two trains approach each other at a crossing, both shall come to a full
stop and neither shall start up again until the other has gone.
"

A simple computer based example is as follows. Suppose a computer has three CD
drives and three processes. Each of the three processes holds one of the
drives. If each process now requests another drive, the three processes will be
in a deadlock. Each process will be waiting for the CD drive released event,
which can be only caused by one of the other waiting processes. Thus, it
results in a
circular chain.

[

]Necessary conditions

A deadlock situation can arise only if all of the following conditions hold
simultaneously in a system:
[1]

list of 4 items
Mutual Exclusion:
At least one resource must be non-shareable.
[1]
Only one process can use the resource at any given instant of time.
Hold and Wait or Resource Holding: A process is currently holding at least one
resource and requesting additional resources which are being held by other
processes.
No Preemption:
The operating system must not de-allocate resources once they have been
allocated; they must be released by the holding process voluntarily.
Circular Wait:
A process must be waiting for a resource which is being held by another
process, which in turn is waiting for the first process to release the resource.
In general, there is a
set
 of waiting processes, P = {P1, P2, ..., PN}, such that P1 is waiting for a
resource held by P2, P2 is waiting for a resource held by P3 and so on till
PN is waiting for a resource held by P1.
[1]
[7]
list end

These four conditions are known as the Coffman conditions from their first
description in a 1971 article by
Edward G. Coffman, Jr.
[7]
Unfulfillment of any of these conditions is enough to preclude a deadlock from
occurring.

[
edit
]Deadlock handling

Most current operating systems cannot prevent a deadlock from occurring.
[1]
When a deadlock occurs, different operating system respond to them in
different non-standard manners. Most approaches work by preventing one of the
four
Coffman conditions from occurring, especially the fourth one.
[8]
 Major approaches are as follows.

[
edit
]Ignoring deadlock

In this approach, it is assumed that a deadlock will never occur. This is also
called the
Ostrich algorithm.
[8]
[9]
This approach was initially used by
MINIX
 and
UNIX.
[7]
This is used when the time intervals between occurrences of deadlocks is large
and the data loss incurred each time is tolerable. It is avoided in very
critical systems.

[
edit
]Detection

Under deadlock detection, deadlocks are allowed to occur. Then the state of the
system is examined to detect that a deadlock has occurred and subsequently
it is corrected. An algorithm is employed th

Subject: Rail car accessibility - rough cut. Pls input.
To: accessiblechennaimetro

*Identification Each passenger rail car that can accommodate a wheelchair
should be
identified by the international symbol of access placed on the outside of
both sides of the passenger rail car by the entrance.

Signage Signage provided on a passenger rail car to aid passengers should
satisfy
the criteria set out below.

(a) Signage should be positioned to avoid shadow areas and glare.
(b) Letters, numbers, symbols and pictographs should be glare-free and
presented in contrasting colours ("Contrasting colours" means a light
colour on a dark background or a dark colour on a light background,
with light on dark being preferable for signage.).
(c) Letters and numbers should be sans serif, and numbers should be
Arabic. Letters and numbers should have at least a width-to-height
ratio between 3:5 and 1:1 and a stroke-width-to-height ratio between
1:5 and 1:10.
(d) Each sign must include a tactile pictogram, raised lettering and
braille text using one-piece zinc/bronze metal signs with (screwholes /
high-performance 3M adhesives) and chemical etching that is durable and
vandal-proof.. When tactile signage or markers are used, letters, numbers,
symbols and pictographs should be raised at least 0.8 mm and should be
between 16 mm and 50 mm high. If a tactile sign is mounted on a wall, its
centre should be at a height of 1500 mm plus or minus 25 mm above the floor.
(e) When signage is supplemented with braille, it should be located at the
bottom of the sign and presented in English Standard Braille Grade - II /
Bharati Braille in local language /

(f) If electronic signage is used, letters, numbers, symbols and
pictographs should be slowly scrolled across the screen. Red letters on a
black background should not be used.

Lighting Lighting on a passenger rail car, except reading and other
lighting under the control of a passenger, should be directed and
controlled so as not to create glare or shadows.
Lighting should not result in any sharp contrasts in intensity throughout a
passenger rail car, but should be used to accentuate stairs and their
handrails or grab bars.

Stairs Stairs on a passenger rail car should have uniform, closed riser
heights and uniform tread depths, and a first step up (a last step down) of
a height that does not exceed the uniform riser height. The tread surfaces
of the stairs should be firm and non-slippery and should not create glare.
The top outer edge of each step should be marked by a contrasting colour
strip that runs the full width of the step and is readily apparent from
both directions of travel.
Handrails or grab bars should be provided on both sides.
If structural limitations of a passenger rail car prevent any of the above
criteria concerning uniform heights and depths, first (last) step,
handrails or grab bars from being satisfied, a rail carrier should provide
assistance, if requested, to a person with a disability in ascending and
descending the stairs.
In addition, if the criterion concerning the first (last) step cannot
besatisfied, a rail carrier should provide a step box. This step box should
be sturdy and have a tread surface that is firm and non-slippery and does
not create glare. It should also have its top outer edge marked by a
contrasting colour strip that runs the full width of the box and is readily
apparent from
both directions of travel.

Handrails and Grab BarsHandrails and grab bars on a passenger rail car
should be sturdy and of a height and length that permit use by a person in
a wheelchair.
Handrails and grab bars should be rounded and free of any sharp or abrasive
element. They should have an exterior diameter and a clearance from the
wall surface to which they are attached that permit easy grasping.
They should not have any obstructions that could break a handhold.
Handrails and grab bars should be colour contrasted from their surrounding
area or marked with a contrasting colour strip that runs the full length of
the handrail or grab bar.
Handrails and grab bars should also return to a wall or floor in a smooth
curve.

FloorsFloor surfaces on and between passenger rail cars should be
slip-resistant.
Glare from floor surfaces should be reduced as far as practicable.
If carpeting is used on a passenger rail car, it should be securely
attached.
It should have a short pile and a firm underpad or no underpad at all.

DoorwaysRail cars should have doorways that are wide enough to permit a
person in a personal wheelchair to access the tie-down.

If structural limitations of an existing coach car with a wheelchair
tie-down prevent this criterion from being satisfied, the rail car should
at least have doorways that are wide enough to permit a person using an
on-board wheelchair to access the car.

Emergency Window Exits Emergency window exits on a passenger rail car

Ok, I have uploaded those 2 files on to sendspace. Here is the link:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/xott7z

Dropbox is too vulnerable to extra traffic. I use this facility for sharing
Bengali audio books with my friends. They don't find the links active very
often.

3select heighlight cell rools submenu and hit enter.

Hi All,

Appended is today's article in the Daily Mail UK.

Best wishes,

Seeing with Sound - The vOICe

Real-life science closes in on Star Trek with new device to hack into blind
people's visual cortex to let them 'see'.

By Damien Gayle.

Last updated at 2:51 PM on 13th February 2012.

In Star Trek: The Next Generation, their congenitally blind engineer, Jordy
LaForge, is able to see thanks to a visor worn across his eyes.

Now, thanks to an Israeli team, real-life technology has taken one more step
to
catching up with science fiction.

They have shown that an amazing device can use sound to hack into the visual
cortex of blind people to let them 'see'.

The Sensory Substitution Device, invented over 20 years ago by Dutch
researcher
Dr Peter Meijer, uses an algorithm to translate the position and appearance
of
an object into distinct tones.

With only a brief period of training, users can learn to interpret the
'soundscape' to show them the shape, location and position of people or
objects,
and even read written words.

Now, a team led by Dr Amir Amedi from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem has
shown that the sounds created actually activate the visual cortices of
congenitally blind people, giving them the opportunity to see, after a
fashion.

Writing in the current issue of the journal Cerebral Cortex, Dr Amedi and
his
team tell how previous research has indicated that the visual cortex
organizes
data into two parallel pathways.

The 'what' pathway, known technically as the ventral occipito-temporal
pathway,
deals with form, identity, and color.

The dorsal occipito-parietal pathway. or the 'where/how' pathway, focuses on
object location and coordinates visual data with motor function.

Amazingly, MRI scans showed blind people using Dr Meijer's device activated
these pathways the same as people with normal vision would, showing that
this
separation of tasks in the visual cortex doesn't actually need eyesight to
form.

The discovery builds on previous work by the team which showed braille
readers
show activity in precisely the same part of the brain that lights up when
sighted readers read.

In a statement, Dr Amedi argued that this means: 'The brain is not a sensory
machine, although it often looks like one; it is a task machine.'

According to io9.com, the Israeli study is just one of several recently
published to suggest that actual visual, auditory, or tactile data aren't
necessary for the brain to interpret what is going on around it.

Re: [AI] Playing with my sighted kid and introducing her to the computers?

2012-02-13 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Rajesh,

My answers are inline.
It seems really interesting.
I had given seeingwithsound a try in my mobile.
Though the voices are different for different objects, but I could not make
myself to hear the soundscapes for various objects and get to know them.
Is there any systematic training for this?
PL] Yes. There are tutorials on the seeingwithsound website. I have written
one of them. You need to remember the following.
1. The panning of the sound shows you where the object is in the horizontal
plane.
2. The pitch of the sound indicates height such that the higher the pitch of
the sound the higher the object.
3. The volume represents brightness such that the louder the sound the
brighter the object.
By using it, can I distinguish, say between an image of Santa clause and
other angels, a child has drawn on screen?
PL] Yes you certainly can. You will have to use the pc version and use the
window sonification feature. There is however a lot of clutter on modern
application screens. A better option for you would be to save the image as
jPeg or Gif or Tif and open the image in the vOICe.
What are these scalable vector graphics?
PL] SVG is a standard for creating images. In vector graphics, you store
commands to create the drawing rather than every pixel that is drawn so, as
a blind person, you can read the commands and figure out what has been
drawn. Do see SVGDraw01 from http://www.dickbaldwin.com for a drawing
program that makes all of this much easier.
Is is possible for an average blind user to be an expert at using
seeingwithsound like you?
PL] It is a matter of practice, persistence and asking questions when you
get stuck.
Is it possible to use it effectively and dynamically in mobility?
PL] I use it for indoor navigation and have tried it on the streets of
Delhi. It helps in giving you additional information but is not a
replacement for your cane or common sense. Since a single camera is used,
you do not have depth perception which is why it is not easy to detect
stairs etc.

I think you would refer me to seeingwithsound.com or so for resolution of my
queries, but I am asking you as you seem to use it practically and
effectively.
It seems to stretch the sensory boundaries very much.
PL] I appreciate that and I am happy to answer questions. The
seeingwithsound site is written by Dr. Meijer and he collates what we say.

2012-02-13 Thread Vetrivel Adhimoolam
They have or are planning to introduce some kind of wifi system whereby
cellphone users can connect to the station network to access the up to date
train status. If my memory is correct, it's introduced in Bangalur. I don't
know about the actual user experience, but given the increasing acccesibility
of wifi/bluetooth enabled devices, such move should be encouraged in such
accesibility related policy proposals.

Handrails and grab bars should also return to a wall or floor in a smooth
curve.

Re: [AI] converting color and grayscale images into black and white

2012-02-13 Thread Umesha Economics

Dear Chinai Giri,
since I was the only person involved in the experiment, I thought of
avoiding the traffic in the list and sent a private mail. so, I am
re-sending the request again.

Dear Chinai Giri,
Thank you, I am happy to pay that non-commercial charge. smiles. but I
need to be informed about the aspects of life before that for wishing. is
there anything of such currently?
regarding the software, first of all, it should be accessible. I.e. I
could be able to use it with Jaws. it should be able to convert colour
images and grayscale images to monochrome images. it should be able to
handle single as well as multiple images in a folder. outputs may be put
in the same folder with the same names replacing the originals or they can
be put in a separate folder with a small string appended at the end of the
file names in order to distinguish them from the originals. the single
files processed may be placed in the same folder as of the original file.
otherwise, the user can be given the option of saving the modified file
(in case of single file only.) with a save as dialog box. as I told
earlier, the threshold for converting grayscale images into monochrome
should be able to be varied by the user for a file in case of single file
processing, and for a batch for batch processing. better there should be
preview option (single file case) to preview how the converted image would
be for different threshold values. for this, you can have a slider for
varying the threshold and the preview pane in a window. there is some
thing called dynamic thresholding where different threshold is applied for
different parts of the image in order to improve the recognizability of
the image. but I don't know the mechanism of that process. if you know
about it, please enlighten me. he program should be compatible with known
picture formats like jpg, bmp, tiff, png, gif, etc. better the output be
in tif format because kurzweil only processes the tif files directly. in
addition, better if the program contains the options to modify the
brightness and contrast of the images.

Re: [AI] converting color and grayscale images into black and white

2012-02-13 Thread Chinai
Dear All,

The Following is the requirement that is needed for the conversion and I am
happy to tell all that the features shall be made available at the earliest.

Requirements:

first of all, it should be accessible. I.e. I could be able to use it with
Jaws. it should be able to convert color images and grayscale images to
monochrome images. it should be able to handle single as well as multiple
images in a folder. outputs may be put in the same folder with the same
names replacing the originals or they can be put in a separate folder with a
small string appended at the end of the file names in order to distinguish
them from the originals. the single files processed may be placed in the
same folder as of the original file. otherwise, the user can be given the
option of saving the modified file (in case of single file
only.) with a save as dialog box. as I told earlier, the threshold for
converting grayscale images into monochrome should be able to be varied by
the user for a file in case of single file processing, and for a batch for
batch processing. better there should be preview option (single file case)
to preview how the converted image would be for different threshold values.
for this, you can have a slider for varying the threshold and the preview
pane in a window. there is something called dynamic thresholding where
different threshold is applied for different parts of the image in order to
improve the recognizability of the image. but I don't know the mechanism of
that process. if you know about it, please enlighten me. he program should
be compatible with known picture formats like jpg, bmp, tiff, png, gif, etc.

better the output be in tif format because kurzweil only processes the tif
files directly. in addition, better if the program contains the options to
modify the brightness and contrast of the images.

Yours
Umesha

Thanks & Regards,
Chinai Giri

Dear Chinai Giri,
since I was the only person involved in the experiment, I thought of
avoiding the traffic in the list and sent a private mail. so, I am
re-sending the request again.

Re: [AI] Configuring outlook2007

2012-02-13 Thread Chinai
Dear Bhavesh,

Pls Follow these steps:
Open Outlook.
Navigate to Tools, then account settings,

Select the Gmail account from the list of accounts under Email.(probably you
need to open it by double clicking it.)

In the Pane all settings of mail such as server addresses, username and
password is written, Here there is an option named More settings.
In More settings Navigate to Advanced Tab.
Under Advanced Tab the last option says:

Delivery, Check this check box.
After this there are two options you need to check the second option here.
Hope this helps.

Thanks & Regards,
Chinai Giri
