[AI] The grate sbi

2012-02-18 Thread Padmakumar vadhyar
Friends, as you know, i had a few problems with account opening with the axis
bank. So today i went to the sbi near my place. Their attitude toward me was
very positive. They not only opened my account, they also gave me checkbook,
debit card, net banking and mobile banking. I was pleasently surprised with the
positive attitude toward the blind in a public sector bank.

Re: [AI] How many per cent visually challenged use internet in India?

2012-02-18 Thread avinash shahi
Thanks Kakarla sir for sharing across your district's happy saga.
But in majority of mini districts across India, story is far from satisfactory.
Specially, in northern and eastern India, fellow beings are far
behind in availing internet facility.
Further, it might sound as joke given acute poverty and other
inescapable harsh realities in second most populated country like
ours,
But can't we lobby for fundamental entitlement of internet usage for
visually challenged in India?

 Dear all,

Here is something interesting that stuck me today and I want to hear
> from
the list members for the same.

I am a part of a software development team and accidently we came across
 the
idea of having a software that shall function as an overlay on top of
> the
existing OS. This overlay shall act as an interface delivering all
 standard
applications that are a part of most commonly used.

The idea is that all the menus, actions, open file, save file, all
 commands,
for Office Suite, Internet Explorer, windows explorer functions, paint-
 Free
hand Drawing , Email Client, calculator, folder management, media
> player.

 What does it mean?

Eg:- Internet Explorer, All the features of a standard browser's menus
 will
be in local language+ it shall be voiced out to the user. Also all the
content of the Page in the browser, irrespective of the language of the
 page
shall be read out in the same language, auto detection of language and
 the
necessary TTS shall be included.(at the moment the idea is toyed around
Hindi / Marathi / Punjabi/ Guajarati). It means that you open two web
 pages
the first one in English and the next page in Hindi, the first page
> shall
 be
rendered to the user in English and the second one in Hindi, without the
need of changing any setting by the user.

Office Suite:- the difference between the open office suite offering the
menus in local language and this overlay is that all of the menus are
 voiced
out and hence the need of screen reader is not required. when you click
File(in local language) all the options are read out including
> assistance
 to
navigate as jaws would do. And all the actions of the resulting click
 shall
be performed as standard actions of MS Office.

 Windows Explorer:

Directory listing, searching folders, all menus that are used for
 performing
actions remain as it is however the voicing out shall be in local
 language.

It is also little difficult he

[AI] Braille Touch Keyboard Allows Typing On A Phone Without Looking

2012-02-18 Thread shahnaz

A group of researchers at Georgia Tech have created a new piece of
software called BrailleTouch that allows users to type on a smartphone
without looking at the screen. It takes advantage of gestures and
multitouch interaction to support a chorded typing system that is
modeled after Braille keyboards.

A group of visually impaired test subjects using the application on an
iPhone were reportedly able to type at up to 32 words per minute with
92 percent accuracy. This speed is said to be considerably faster than
what has previously been achieved with other "eyes-free" text input
prototypes.

The researchers contend that the chorded typing system used by
BrailleTouch is easy to learn and that it could potentially be useful
to a broader audience, including sighted users who want to be able to
type on their phone without looking. The interface has six dots, three
on each side of the screen. The user holds the phone in landscape
orientation with the screen facing away from them and types by tapping
the dots.

"Research has shown that chorded, or gesture-based, texting is a
viable solution for eyes-free written communication in the future,
making obsolete the need for users to look at their devices while
inputting text on them," the project's lead researcher, Mario Romero,
told is in a statement.

The researchers intend to distribute the program under an open source
software license. They are also working on ports to other platforms,
including Android. For additional details about the software, you can
reader a paper (PDF) published by the researchers. You can also see it
in action in a YouTube video:

Thanks Kakarla sir for sharing across your district's happy saga.
But in majority of mini districts across India, story is far from satisfactory.
Specially, in northern and eastern India, fellow beings are far
behind in availing internet facility.
Further, it might sound as joke given acute poverty and other
inescapable harsh realities in second most populated country like
ours,
But can't we lobby for fundamental entitlement of internet usage for
visually challenged in India?

Hello,
The notice board installed on such counters clearly displays the
categories of persons who can book there tickets through such special
counters.
In New Delhi, there is a special counter exclusively for the disabled.
In other small places, disabled have to share the facility with senior
citizens and in some cases with ladies as well. Pertinent to mention
that all the places you don't find this facility. However, if one is
very assertive, not require to stand in queues as disabled do not have
the facility to book their consessional ticket online while others do
have such facility.

Thanks,

Hello peeps,

Someone please clear my doubt. As we are aware, There are few Booking
Counters there in railways which is for disabled and old aged people.

Now my question is, whether those counters are for disabled persons and
for
booking their own tickets alone? or disabled persons and old aged people
can

book tickets for their friends and family as well?

Guess it's going to be a good debate.

With Kind Regards,

Respected access Indian friends I have few quries please help me by

Re: [AI] guidance for out look, skype and vachak needed please.

2012-02-18 Thread Sinoj
Skype will work with 2G. But, you have to find good connection in your
area. If you get 16 KBPS downloading speed in IDM always, you can use it.
BSNL provides 32 KBPS downloading speed in gprs if 3g available in your area
and mobile. You can chat and watch youtube videos without buffering. I am
using it. Also test Docomo, Aircel and Vodafone.
