Many of us appeared for NET held on Sunday gone by. Now as we felt shocked at many questions during the exam, our views has been echoed in an editorial in The Indian Express. Hope better sense prevail among question-papers preparers next time. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/epic-fail/1136803/0 The UGC's test for entry-level university teachers reveals sexist and condescending assumptions The University Grants Commission has made some outrageous errors of judgement in framing its examination for teacher aptitude in the National Eligibility Test (NET). One of the multiple choice questions asked: "At the primary school stage, most teachers should be women because". This is a patently disputable assumption, and the choices provided were all problematic, steeped in sexist stereotypes. The idea that women teach children better than men is probably drawn from the observation that, in many homes, it is a woman's responsibility to provide early nurturing, to teach a child how to learn, and introduce elementary ideas. This is not because women are especially talented at it, but because men seldom take it up with enthusiasm. That women "know basic content better than men" is equally condescending. The unspoken extension would be, women teach children better with basics, so that men can take over at the higher, more evolved levels? Another choice, "can deal with children with love and affection", is also about freezing gender roles, where women share and care and love, while men compete and prod each other to greater achievement. It is a crass reduction of human personality into two types. The most appalling suggestion, of course, was that women make better primary school teachers because they "are available on lower salaries". Even if it was the wrong answer, it is incredible that it was even articulated as an option by the body that regulates and oversees higher education in India. The NET was devised as an attempt to standardise measures of quality for entry-level teaching staff. It is no surprise that this aim has been undercut — the aptitude test speaks for itself. The questions are clearly open to subjective interpretation. Several of the answer options provided could be credibly argued in an essay, but they may or may not be what the test-setters had in mind. Some of the analogies are bewildering — for instance, "bee-honey, cow-milk, teacher-?" The options are: intelligence, marks, lessons, wisdom. The test reflects the unexamined prejudices of those who drafted it. These bloopers are particularly egregious because they come from such a powerful source. As a regulator of higher education, the UGC has given itself the mandate to control curricula, to manage appointments, to direct the flow of funds. [AI] Loneliness among Students with Blindness and Sighted Students in Jordan: A brief report

Al Khateeb Abstract This study investigated loneliness among students with blindness and those who are sighted in Jordan, and examined whether loneliness levels vary according to gender. Students included 90 students with blindness and 79 sighted students selected from high schools and universities in the capital city of Amman. The instrument used to collect information in this study was an Arabic translation and adapted version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale developed by Russell in 1996. The results indicated that students with blindness reported significantly higher degrees of loneliness than sighted students; however, no significant differences were attributable to gender or interaction between visual status and gender. The implications of the findings for families and teachers of students with blindness, and for future research in Jordan, are offered. Introduction Loneliness is a pervasive social problem that is experienced universally, regardless of one’s gender, age or cultural background (Rokach & Bacanli, 2001 ). It has been defined as the absence or perceived absence of satisfying social relationships (Page, 1990 ). The research literature provides evidence suggesting that loneliness is a risk factor for socio-emotional adjustment difficulties among adolescents (Coplan, Closson, & Arbeau, 2007 ). Loneliness is quite common and especially intense in adolescence (Krause-Parello, 2008 ; Le Roux, 2009 ; Woodward & Frank, 1988 ). Several factors have been shown to be significantly associated with loneliness among adolescents, including the quality of their social relationships (Howell, Hauser-Cram, & Kersh, 2007 ; Whitehouse, Durkin, Jaquet, & Ziatas, 2009 ). Results of previous studies on gender differences in loneliness have been contradictory (Borys & Perlman, 1985 ; Clinton & Anderson, 1999 ; Levin, 1986 ; Tornstam, 1992 ). Usually, statistically significant gender differences are not found, but, when they are found, males typically are reported to be lonelier than females (Koenig & Abrams, 1999 ). Many studies have shown that, compared with students without disabilities, students with disabilities exhibit higher levels of loneliness (Bauminger & Kasari, 2000 ; Coplan et al., 2007 ; McVilly, Stancliffe, Parmenter, & Burton-Smith, 2006 ; Pavri, 2001 ; Pavri & Monda-Amaya, 2000 ; Stancliffe, Lakin, Taub, Chiri, & Byun, 2009 ; White & Roberson-Nay, 2009 ; Whitehouse et al., 2009 ). Research has often associated the loneliness experienced by students with disabilities to the deficits they have in social skills and the difficulties they face in peer relationships (Margalit & Ben-Dov, 1995 ; Yu, Zhang, & Yan, 2005 ). The research literature shows that vision impairment might negatively impact a person’s psychosocial development (Huurre, 2000 ; Zell Sacks, Kekelis, & Gaylord-Ross, 1992 ). Several studies in the last two decades have reported that students with vision impairment exhibit higher levels of loneliness, especially in adolescence (Frame, 2000 ; Gold, 2002 ; Huurre & Aro, 1998 ; Rogow, 1999 ). Although students with blindness were among the first groups with disabilities in Jordan to receive special education and rehabilitation (Hadidi, 1998 ), they are among the least studied. A recent review of special education research published in the last decade in Jordan and other Arab countries revealed that out of 216 studies reviewed, 10 studies were related to blindness and vision impairment (Al Khateeb, 2009 ). None of these studies addressed feelings of loneliness among students with blindness, and only one study investigated social support received by pre-adolescents with blindness (Shawareb, 2005 ). This study found that the support network for sighted students was significantly larger than that available to students with vision impairments. One study by Batayneh (2005 ) investigated the level of loneliness experienced by 238 students with physical disabilities. These students were found to experience moderate levels of loneliness. No statistically significant differences were found for gender, social status, or nature of work. In the present study, the differences in loneliness experienced by Jordanian students with and without blindness were examined. This issue has not been addressed in this country thus far. The study attempted to answer the following two questions: 1. Do students with blindness and sighted students in Jordan experience significantly different levels of loneliness? 2. Does gender play a significant role in the degree of loneliness experienced? You will be very glad to know that due to hard work of all the blind persons who was selected as Vidhya Sahayak and were not appointed and due to cooperation of our Advocate, Mr. Kaushi Pujara, High Court delivered the most favourable Judgment. The summary of this landmark Judgment is given in Paragraph 16.1 of the Judgment which reads as follows "There is nothing on record to show that any action has been taken by the State Government to exempt appointment of Vidhya Sahayaks from the application of the provisions of Section 33 of the Act. Therefore, the decision of the respondents not to consider the Petitioner's for their appointment as Vidhya Sahayaks pursuant to the advertisement issued in the year 2010-11, as referred to hereinabove, is contrary to the provisions of Sections 32,33,34 &36 of the Act, 1995 and also unreasonable, arbitarary, discriminatory and violating of articles 14&16 of the Constitution of India". Hi All Firstly, I am sorry for the error in my last E-mail. I was trying to E-mail Vikas directly so as to avoid access traffic on the list. Somehow, before I could have realized, the E-mail instead of being sent directly to Vikas, was sent to the list. I am sorry for the inconvenience it may cause to anyone. Avichal, for your information, the English Hons syllabus has changed a lot from that of the last years under the Four Year Under Graduate Program. The new syllabus can be downloaded from: www.du.ac.in Similarly, the syllabus for all other subjects is also available on the same website.
