[AI] Some questions on Flipkart eBook

2013-11-26 Thread Mahesh S. Panicker
Hello listers
Flipkart is providing a number of books in eBook format. But I've read
on their site that those can be read only through their official apps
designed for android and IOS. I want to read the books on my computer.
Is there a way to convert the eBooks to PDF format after downloading?
Has anyone tried the Flipkart eBook app on their android phones? If
so, how accessible is it?
Thanks

[AI] Where is my right to vote?

2013-11-26 Thread CVM
Dear Friends,

We are all aware that politics plays major role in our country to highlight
or solve the issues of vulnerable communities, but in my knowledge, I did
not hear from any political party those who are talking about the issues of
people with disabilities because they don't feel that disability community
should be vote bank for them, perhaps they don't know about our strength in
the society. I feel that this is another reason of our exclusion because
till now disability is not an issue for GOVT.
But my concern is that is there any political party who wants inclusion of
people with disabilities to empower them to understand the importance of
their one vote?
Yesterday, I went to the poling booth to use my voting right to my favorite
leader, but when I reached and asked them to give me escort but they said
that we don't know about escort, however I managed and gave my slip to
officer and reached to voting machine, but there was no Braille sticker so I
faced difficulty to identify the button but I asked my relative and gave my
vote, after voting, I asked concern person that you are not following
instructions of supreme court then he said thatnobody gave us any kind of
instruction. After this incident, I called media and highlighted this
issues, and I will definetly file complaint to state election commission
because they did not follow the supreme court order in 10 districts of
Madhya Pradesh.
Friends, It is a very serious issue if I will not come out from my house to
use my vote then nobody will talk about your issues, therefore disability
community is facing this problem. Now we should wake up and we should use
our vote to show our strength to the political parties otherwise nobody will
talk about our issues.

Thank you

Hey, Siddalingeshwar Sir I too use JAWS 14 with Windows 7 Starter and
my Notepad is working perfectly fine. Please could you mention the
version of your Notepad? Also, I have faced a similar problem on many
Word Processors and other places. Generally, it would start working
fine after reopening the document. Please try the same.

[AI] Disabled Phailin Cyclone victims resort to begging, seek special relief

2013-11-26 Thread avinash shahi
God knows How many people become disabled when nature's fury ravages
human lives and their properties.
There is an urgent need to undertake research and study on disability
as the fall out of disasters. There may have been many who became
victim of Tsunami in the past also.
Demanding special relief from the government, disabled persons
affected by cyclone Phailin in Odisha's Ganjam district resorted to
begging while staging an agitation.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/disabled-phailin-victims-resort-to-begging-seek-special-relief/article1-1155812.aspx

We took to begging as the government did not pay heed to our
demands, said president of Odisha Bikalanga Manch Debasish Parmanik.

The disabled, including orthopaedically-handicapped, visually impaired
and speech and hearing impaired from across the district staged the
dharna near the vigilance office in Berhampur on Monday.

Their demands included provision of cyclone relief to persons with
disability, considering every individual as an unit and immediate
rehabilitation of people severely hit by cyclone Phailin and the
subsequent floods.

These are our long-standing demands, but the government has
deliberately ignored them, said secretary of the organisation
Rajendra Kumar Bisoi.

He said around 2,000 disabled persons in the district have been

I did not get relief because I have no ration card, said Mami Das,

The district administration has instructed block development officers
(BDO) to provide relief to the disabled persons.

Many have got the relief, but there is no provision to treat every
individual as an unit, said assistant collector (emergency) Mahendra

[AI] FW: [Blindmath] BlindMath Gems

Subject: [Blindmath] BlindMath Gems

Now Available on Blindscience.org: Blindmath Gems
For almost ten years, the NFB has maintained the
Blindmath listserv, a lively exchange of
worldwide postings on all topics mathematical.
The Blindmath archives are now
ginormous. Finding anything of substance in them
can be a daunting task except for the most
database-savvy users. Therefore, in cooperation
with the NFB Jernigan Institute, I have spent the
last three years combing through the Blindmath
archives looking for and compiling the most
interesting and relevant postings. We have put
this compilation on the NFB's Blindscience.org
Website. Postings have been placed in different
categories that simplify user searches
. Currently, I have finished searching the
archives through 2011. What has happened too
often before is that rather than searching the
archives first, people in need of math-related
information have simply posted their questions on
Blindmath. This has resulted in repetitive
queries with sometimes tired, old answers. Now,
before posting your question, please go to
http://www.blindscience.org/blindmath-gems-homewww.blindscience.org/blindm
ath-gems-home.
If you don't find what you are looking for here,
feel free to post your question to
Blindmath. It's possible that your question has
already been answered, and I simply failed to
select your query. Let me apologize here in
advance for any failure or shortcoming on my part
in my selection of postings. If you have
comments or questions about Blindmath Gems,
please contact me at
mailto:blmathg...@earthlink.netblmathg...@earthlink.net.
This is a special e-mail address I have created
for Blindmath questions. For all other
communications with me, please use

[AI] Bansuri Flute Styles Techniques

2013-11-26 Thread raaju
Bansuri Flute Styles Techniques

There is no single standard of correct flute technique in India today, and
the different flute players of the current generation each have their own
unique

manner of playing. Here is some general information on some of the different
styles.

Pannalal Ghosh

Ghosh, who died in 1960, was the inventor of the modern version of the
seventh hole, played by the little finger of the right hand. He is the
musician who

popularized the stage performance of long flutes, and can generally be
considered the father of modern bansuri performance. Before him, most
flutists used

very short flutes, as is still the case with Karnatik music today. Nor did
they necessarily play transverse flutes, as with the noted flutist and
producer

D. Amel of Bombay, who played classical rags on a recorder-like straight
flute and who was an influence on Panna Lal Ghosh's performance.

Arguably the most important contribution by Ghosh to North Indian flute
technique was his extensive use of the third octave of the flute's range.
This requires

a somewhat narrower flute than ones commonly found in India today. Although
some musicians today maintain that Ghosh used very fat flutes, his
recordings

offer evidence that he did not. As flutes get wider, the notes of the third
octave drop out, one by one. The first to go is the high Komal Ni, and in a

recording of Rag Khammaj made shortly before his death Panna Lal Ghosh is
playing this note quite clearly. This can only be done on a flute of a
medium

bore, and not a wide one. Some people maintain that he played with the
fingertips of both hands, but photographs of him taken in the late 1950's
show him

holding narrow flutes with the pads of his finger on the left hand, using
the fingertips only on the right hand.

Panna Lal Ghosh was later in life a student of Ali Akbar Khan's father,
Allaudin Khan of Maihar. His music demonstrates the virtuosity of rag and
tal to

which all classical musicians aspire. He played extensively in the form of
Kheyal, or the vocal style characterized by such tals as slow ecktal
followed

by a faster piece in tintal. The flutes which he played were somewhat
primitive by today's standards however, and many of his recordings are
notoriously

out-of-tune.

His legacy was carried on by his son-in-law Devindra Murdeshwar, who in the
1970's was probably the leading flutist of his generation. Unfortunately, he

did not record much at that time and only a few pieces from this period
exist, such as Rag Jhinjoti in rupak tal, which despite a very wispy tone is
a

beautiful performance. After the death of his wife, Ghosh's daughter, in the
1980's Murdeshwar had a nervous breakdown and never regained his previous

stature. His son, the late Anand Murdeshwar, carried on the family tradition
with an unkind twist - he did not use the third octave of notes, ignoring

completely the very contribution to flute technique his grandfather
pioneered.

Hari Prasad Chaurasia

On the stage today, the dominant force is Hari Prasad. He is a unique talent
who has developed an unprecedented style by assimilating elements from every

conceivable tradition, from instrumental to vocal and folk music. Unlike
Panna Lal Ghosh, his music is characterized by extensive tonguing. His first
teacher

was Bhola Nath, who played both shehnai and flute, as was common for wedding
musicians in that time. Some of his tonguing techniques are therefore
probably

derived from shehnai. Hari Prasad has also studied with Annapurna, Ravi
Shankar's first wife and Ali Akbar Khan's sister, and some of Hari Prasad's
tonguing

is reminiscent of the taranas, or songs composed with drum syllables,
favored by the Maihar gharana. Some songs of this type from the Maihar
tradition

can be heard on Ali Akbar Khan's ensemble recording Legacy, sung by Asha
Bhosle.

Hari Prasad is the advocate of the really fat flute, and uses a very wide
embouchure as well. This style of flute favors the lowest notes. Some of the

flutes Hari Prasad plays have a poor upper second octave and the third
octave may be absent, so those notes are often ignored in his development.
The large

embouchure allows for the capture of the burst of air in his tonguing, and
is very much part of his sound. He is a master at using the microphone as
part

of the sound-producing process, and controls his volume by moving in and out
of its range. His flute is made with six finger holes, like the traditional

folk flutes before Panna Lal Ghosh's innovation.

Hari Prasad mostly plays the instrumental style called gat, which consists
of a single line of composition in and out of which the improvisation flows.

He usually plays extensive jhala, or the fast tonguing which comes at the
end of a piece, which is based on the use of the chikari or drone strings of

sitar, sarod, or vina. This is a completely different style of development
than that of Panna Lal Ghosh, which was usually based on the vocal style
Kheyal.

 Bansuri Flute Styles Techniques

There is no single standard of correct flute technique in India today, and
the different flute players of the current generation each have their own
 unique

manner of playing. Here is some general information on some of the
 different

Unfortunately,
 he

did not record much at that time and only a few pieces from this period
exist, such as Rag Jhinjoti in rupak tal, which despite a very wispy tone
 is
 a

beautiful performance. After the death of his wife, Ghosh's daughter, in
 the
1980's Murdeshwar had a nervous breakdown and never regained his previous

stature. His son, the late Anand Murdeshwar, carried on the family
 tradition
with an unkind twist - he did not use the third octave of notes, ignoring

completely the very contribution to flute technique his grandfather
 pioneered.

 Hari Prasad Chaurasia

On the stage today, the dominant force is Hari Prasad. He is a unique
 talent
who has developed an unprecedented style by assimilating elements from
 every

conceivable tradition, from instrumental to vocal and folk music. Unlike
Panna Lal Ghosh, his music is characterized by extensive tonguing. His
 first
 teacher

was Bhola Nath, who played both shehnai and flute, as was common for
 wedding
musicians in that time.

Some of
 the

flutes Hari Prasad plays have a poor upper second octave and the third
octave may be absent, so those notes are often ignored in his development.
 The large

embouchure allows for the capture of the burst of air in his tonguing, and
is very much part of his sound. He is a master at using the microphone as
 part

of the sound-producing process, and controls his volume by moving in and
 out
of its range. His flute is made with six finger holes, like the traditional

folk flutes before Panna Lal Ghosh's innovation.

Hari Prasad mostly plays the instrumental style called gat, which consists
of a single line of composition in and out of which the improvisation
 flows.

He usually plays extensive jhala, or the fast tonguing which comes at the
end of a piece, which is based on the
