You can find more information about this application at

Has anyone here used this application?
Would love to read your feedback.

Dear Friends,

''The privatisation of water is a deliberate policy choice by the
government. We all believe that local communities are ‘natural protectors
and sustainable users’ of water; not its ‘customers’. The privatization of
water is against the spirit of a welfare state, as enshrined in our
Constitution. Privatization of water leads to corruption and makes water a
profitable market commodity which we are experiencing in Delhi and others
parts of India where water has been privatized leading to increased
financial burden in the form of high water bills for the end users ie. the
citizens. The Delhi Government is privatizing city’s water supply to allow
corporate control over water through “Public-Private-Partnership” that will
lead to high water tariffs. It is clear that private corporations have no
ethical agenda to make water a ‘social good’, rather they have to “develop
markets” to make huge profits out of water.

All over the globe, the model of Privatisation has been miserably failed
and we see a reversing trend in privatisation, and re-municipalisation of
water services to regain public control in countries like France, Canada,
Germany, Hungary, Finland, Tanzania, Indonesia and Malaysia, while there is
a strong resistance to water privatization in different countries around
the world, e.g. in Italy, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Brazil and others.

We therefore appeal to you to raise your voice to stop the privatization
and commodification of water services in Delhi and strengthening of public
water services in Delhi.

Please find attached the leaflet as part of our water manifesto and
circulate this widely, within your network and with people. If any of you
are interested in distributing this Parcha among voters/in your
neighborhood, please contact me on 9818065092 or send a mail.

Let us make our struggle for water democracy, a success. Right to water
flows with Right to Life.

hai friends, read and enjoy this analysis of tempest.
The Tempest- A Banana Republic
Dr. Vandita Gautam
Associate Professor, Dept. of English
Motilal Nehru College (University of Delhi)
William Shakespeare is at his enigmatic best in The Tempest. The play
is a miasma of subtle interpretations which verberate in tandem to the
diachronic slant of the reader-critic. One common denominator that
underscores the variety of criticism on the play is its inter-racial
inflection. This paper will explore the dynamics of slavery and
cultural shifts in the play which lead the dramatist to a guilt-ridden
conclusion that cultures are universally complicit in creating social
tragedies, no matter how missionary their stance.
Our first and foremost cue to the conflictual nature of The Tempest is
its name and setting. The play’s setting is a desolate island
discovered by chance. The landscape of this island is rough where
caves and grottos abound. The immediate climate setting of the play is
tropical marine. The weather of the island is very varied: sunshine,
snow, rains and tempests abound. A close reading of the flora and
fauna of the play clearly cues us to the region, which is in all
probability, the Americas – the New World recently discovered. The
Tempest is set in Central and upper South America, i.e. Mexico and the
Caribbeans, imaginatively limned by Shakespeare who had read the
travelogues of the contemporary voyagers and mariners. It is by design
that the island Prospero makes his home is inhabited by a witch from
Algiers -Sycorax, and her son whom Prospero aptly namesCaliban.
Sycorax is a moon worshipper, which connects her to Mexico since in
Nahuatl
language, Mēxihco translates to navel of the moon. Caliban is clearly
a derivative of the Kalinago or Carib people from Lesser Antilles in
the Caribbean Sea. The Caribs are of African, American Indian and
mixed ethnicity. Prospero’s daughter is aptly namedMiranda. In Latin
mirandus means alternatively, ‘she who must be admired’ and a
‘watchtower’ or a ‘vantage point’. In 1519 the Spaniard, Hernán Cortés
arrived in Mexico where war and small pox ravaged the natives but left
the conquering Europeans unharmed. The Mexicans took this as a miracle
and there was mass conversion to Christianity. European perception of
their selves was messianic at its colonial best. ‘Miranda’ has ominous
overtones – the young lass symbolises the New World which holds
enormous potential for Europe but is a beacon to future crisis since
colonisation howsoever gloved with the zeal to civilize will involve
dispossession, displacement and
manslaughter. Ariel, the wind sprite who is promised conditional
freedom is clearly a Native American Indian exploited by the
Europeans. Ariel’s appearance as a Harpy re-affirms this since Harpy
eagles are mainly found in Central America.
The Tempest is a cultural chiaroscuro where Shakespeare paints complex
characters in an ambiguous setting. The play is a dark comedy with a
baffling beginning and a charismatic ending. The play begins with a
discussion on 'Utopia' laced with paradoxes; the end is dystopian -
the protagonist hurls the craft of his passion and vocation, his
magic wand, into the deep sea. This final act impounds Prospero’s
nobility and his magic to witchcraft. The play plays with cultural
sensibilities and questions our societal status quo which lets us be
complacent and above the guilty parley all cultures acquiesce to.

hai friends, read and enjoy this analysis of tempest.
The Tempest- A Banana Republic

William Shakespeare is at his enigmatic best in The Tempest. The play
is a miasma of subtle interpretations which verberate in tandem to the
diachronic slant of the reader-critic. One common denominator that
underscores the variety of criticism on the play is its inter-racial
inflection. This paper will explore the dynamics of slavery and
cultural shifts in the play which lead the dramatist to a guilt-ridden
conclusion that cultures are universally complicit in creating social
tragedies, no matter how missionary their stance.

Re: [AI] Indian Foreign Services-Visually Challenged

2013-12-04 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
The doors of Indian Foreign service are open for a visually challanged
person. One has to qualify Civil services and have to give foreign
service as his first preference, there is no such bar that a VH
candidate cann't hold that office. Nonetheless for being successful in
this career one has to be proficient in good understanding of foreign
relations of India with other country and good knowledge of various
affairs between India and allocated country .

Re: [AI] can we get handicap certificate, best bus pass, st bus pass, online in mumbai?

2013-12-04 Thread Amjad Ahmed Fitwala
Sir,

The registration of Online Disability Certificate has been started in
Sir. J. J. Hospital, Mumbai and Civil Hospital in Thane. You have to
carry the photo-copies of ration card, proof of your birth and aadhaar
card along with original documents for verification.

The Concession pass of BEST and ST is not available online so far in
Mumbai as they are under progress. You have to visit at the office of
social welfare department or the nearest office of NGOs those are
working for the visually impaired. Hope this helps.

[AI] : Not a disabled friendly electoral system

2013-12-04 Thread Dr Satendra Singh
Today's 'The Hindu' has covered the problems faced by disabled voters in
high-tech Delhi Elections.

Not a disabled friendly electoral system
5 December 2013

While it tried through media campaigns to improve the voter turnout for the
Delhi Assembly elections, a large number of persons with disability (PwDs)
were still unable to reach the polling booths — as they were not disabled
friendly — and could not exercise their franchise.

A case in point was that of Neeru Gautam, who works in the disability
sector with Sahyogi. A resident of Block 34 of West Patel Nagar, Ms. Gautam
decided to cast her vote by taking her power chair all the way to the
polling station in Block 26 Community Centre.

However, on reaching her polling booth, she realised there was no ramp to
enter and the entrance to the room was also blocked by a wooden pole which
had been put in the middle of the passage to segregate the incoming and
leaving voters.

“As my chair could not enter the room, I asked the election staff to come
out and help me cast my vote. But despite repeated pleas, no one came
forward. Then one person offered to lift me physically, which I refused
outright and I came back without casting my vote,” she rued.

Ms. Gautam incidentally had been voting in every election. “Earlier, I had
a helper who would take me inside the booth but ever since I became
independent due to my power chair, I have not felt the need for one. The
Election Commission should have ensured ramps and barrier-free access for
the PwDs in this election.”

Some PwDs also vented their anger on social networking sites. Abha
Khetarpal, a wheelchair user and president of NGO Cross the Hurdles, wrote
on the Facebook page of Dr. Satendra Singh, Coordinator with the Enabling
Unit of the Equal Opportunity Cell of the University College of Medical
Sciences, how polling booth number A-28 in Subhash Nagar, where she had to
cast her vote, had no ramps for wheelchair users and no Braille stickers.

She commented: “So, in this politics of vote bank, polling stations are
inaccessible. How can this be called government of the people, by the
people and for the people?”

Ms. Khetarpal also noted the media often asks for proof about such
shortcomings in the electoral system. “But taking pictures is not allowed —
a disabled system indeed.”

For his part, Dr. Singh said: “I haven’t seen any attempts on the part of
the Election Commission to publicise voting facilities for the disabled.
There is no information on radio or media. However, kudos to the EC Delhi
to finally make their website accessible to visually impaired. Sadly, EC’s
website is still inaccessible.”

Despite the heavy odds, some PwD voters remained determined to cast their
vote. Virender Kalra, a bank manager and a resident of Subhash Nagar, was
one of them. When he found there was no ramp for his wheelchair to climb
on, he got two persons to lift him and take him inside the polling booth.
“I was determined to vote and did so to play my role in ensuring a healthy
democracy,” he said.

[AI] considering addition to group guidelines

2013-12-04 Thread Umesha Economics

Dear moderator and others,
I have changed the subject line to reflect the matter being discussed.
the trailing mail and many more in the list are forwarded mails. we the
screen reader users face lot of problem in reading these mails. many a
times, the original mail is recirculated and forwarded several times and to
several recipients. in such cases, we have to go across several lines of
useless text before getting the actual content. even surprising is the fact
that some times people foreword from their same mail IDs. so, please
consider the addition of a rule into the list guidelines demanding the
posters to remove such forwarding text before posting to the list. since I
feel the matter can be discussed among members, and learned members can
express their opinions, I posted this to the list rather than sending to the
moderator's mail ID.

Re: [AI] considering addition to group guidelines

2013-12-04 Thread Kotian, H P
Dear Umesha
Thanks for bringing this out. This is essentially an email etiquette issue and
it is upon each one of us to respect fellow members. Frankly, I don't want the
guidelines to be very heavy and what we can do is that our mentors can engage
with those persons. This is one of the small corrections which needs to be
worked on. This is all done through private mail so, nobody should feel
offended by it. One should take it in a positive spirit and one is expected to
respond accordingly.

I hope this is fine.
Harish.

Subject: [AI] considering addition to group guidelines

Umesha

to stop the water privatization. No Water, No Vote! [2 Attachments]
To: arkitectin...@yahoogroups.com

Dear Friends,

''The privatisation of water is a deliberate policy choice by the
government. We all believe that local communities are 'natural protectors
and sustainable users' of water; not its 'customers'. The privatization of
water is against the spirit of a welfare state, as enshrined in our
Constitution. Privatization of water leads to corruption and makes water a
profitable market commodity which we are experiencing in Delhi and others
parts of India where water has been privatized leading to increased
financial burden in the form of high water bills for the end users ie. the
citizens. The Delhi Government is privatizing city's water supply to allow
corporate control over water through "Public-Private-Partnership" that will
lead to high water tariffs. It is clear that private corporations have no
ethical agenda to make water a 'social good', rather they have to "develop
markets" to make huge profits out of water.

Solidarity,

[AI] Etiquette: Interacting with PWD (Persons With Disability)

2013-12-04 Thread Kotian, H P
Friends
Got this interesting info from Mujtaba Merchant.
Read on
Harish Kotian
Forwarded info:

Etiquette: Interacting with PWD (Persons With Disability)

Introduction:

This document is aimed to educate fellow employees on basic ethicate on the
correct way to interact with people with disabilities. For many people, meeting
someone in a wheelchair or with a significant disability creates an awkward
moment when they are unsure how to behave.

All content here has been compiled from various sources on the internet. A
special mention and thanks to Richard C. Senelick, MD, neurologist, author,
blogger and international speaker.

 Greeting Ethicate:

What would you do when faced with someone with a paralyzed or missing right
arm? Most people, even those with a prosthetic arm or hand, can shake hands. It
is appropriate to use your left hand if the person cannot respond with their
right hand. The disabled person will usually give you a cue by extending an arm
or hand as best they can. It is best not to just go ahead and grab an arm that
may turn out to be a painful experience for the person.

The "good old buddy" pat on the back or shoulder is never appropriate behavior.

Have you ever noticed that when you speak to someone who doesn't understand
English that you tend to raise your voice, thinking that somehow shouting the
words will rattle their brain into understanding? We do the same thing when we
address people with disabilities. There is usually no need to raise your voice.
However, when someone has a cognitive impairment it can help to slow down and
speak clearly.

Use their first name only if everyone else is being referred to by their first
name. Better yet, ask for their preference.

Treat the person as an adult. Don't patronize the individual because they have
a physical or mental disability.

Don't pat people in wheelchairs on the head or shoulder in place of a proper
greeting. Sit down and make eye contact. This is critical! When you are seated
in your office and someone enters, don't you usually stand up to greet them?

Some people want help, others do not. It is acceptable to ask if you can get
the door, pick up their canes or push their wheelchair. But don't feel hurt if
your offer is declined and the person wishes to be independent.

If you make contact with someone who is visually impaired, introduce yourself
with your first & last name. A name like Tom and Kevin is easy for one to
remember but for a person who has no visual cue it's challenging for them to
remember or recall which Tom or which Kevin. Also try and associate your name
with the department you work in, your designation or office location. For
example, "Hi this is Jennifer Douglas, from the Health & Safety department on
the 3rd floor. Do you need any assistance with the stairs?"

If you have made contact with the visually impaired person more than once and
probably you work in the same office or department you are not obligated to
keep introducing yourself to the person. He/ She could guess who you are by
your voice. And if there is any doubt be ready to be asked without being
embarrassed "Sorry, who is this?"

 Conversational Etiquette:

Always speak to the disabled individual directly and not through someone else.
We will speak to family members and friends instead of addressing the person
directly. Even if the person has a cognitive disability, their presence must be
recognized and respected. People are individuals who happen to have
disabilities and should not be addressed as third parties or objects in the
room.

When having a conversation with a person with a physical disability, use
normal everyday language and relax. We can slip into an unpleasant and
demeaning habit of speaking to the disabled person as if they were a child. You
may have to make a physical accommodation, such as sitting down. Remember, the
individual is otherwise no different than you.

Most of us are poor listeners. When someone has a speech impairment, take your
time and listen. Don't try to always finish their sentence. That can be
difficult when you are in a hurry, but never to pretend to understand if you do
not -- it is acceptable to say so.

If the person has a visual impairment, identify yourself and let them know
where you are what you intend to do.

Do not use derogatory statements or phrases in your conversation with the
individual. Even if they have a pun or humor to them.

Don't apologize if you use an expression such as "I gotta run" or "See you
later" that relates to the person's disability. These expressions are part of
everyday language and it is likely the apology will be more offensive than the
expression.

 Things to remember:

Individuals with disabilities are people! Remember, he/she is a person, NOT a
disability.

They expect to be treated with the same dignity and respect that you do.

Just because someone has a disability does not mean he/she is disabled.

[AI] Where is my Right to Vote?

2013-12-04 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi
Pasting a post which failed to get to the list.
Harish.
Quoting:

Hi friends,

Persons with visual impairment have right to participate in political
activities as equal with others. The issue of inaccessibility has been major
challenge to restrict the person's mobility and exercise their franchise. There
are government provision (Supreme court order, 2004) to ensure right of the
blind people to vote. Inspite of the fact, most of the people can't give
their vote due to lack of facilities and ignorance.

I am doing my preliminary research aiming to knock the door of the election
commission of India. I have done with RTI application with five states where
general assembly election has happened. I am also doing interviews with people
from all these states like Rajasthan,MP, Mizoram ,Chhatisgrah and Delhi.

If any body interested to add to my findings please feel free to share your
experience of voting. That will help us to make the arguments strong.

My experience with my brother who has disability at polling both:
*  police were relatively sensitive
* There was no awareness among officer and volunteers presented at
polling both
* I did not see the braille signage on EVMs machine
* I feel that goverment is failed to provide the basic provisions
mentioned in the supreme court order which itself is outdated and insufficient
to ensure the barrier free voting.

DO Share and voice out for a change!

[AI] article on delhi university

Cell. No. 9811174243
hi to all,

compelled to mention of the article of which the link is pasted below.
I urge you all to have a look at it and express your views..

through this article the writer has just tried to appritiate the
efforts of university and to speak good words about them. no efforts
were made to mention about the serious efforts made by the students of
the university. at one point of time, by their own selves and at other
point of time, under the banner of sambhavana. it is sad to give
whole of the credit to eoc or the university administration for
changes being brought. whether it is the case of the syllabus of the
foundation course for the blind students of the university, those all
changes were brought after the intervention made by sambhavana in form
of case.

I agree that the moves of university are appritiable but I also label
them as charity as no serious efforts for the employment of disabled
students are made. there are various matters lying ahead.

certain of her first name. she was visiting Devnar School in Hyderabad a
few weeks ago.

There used to be a blind person from the US embassy stationed in India.

This could be a reference point to work on.

The doors of Indian Foreign service are open for a visually challanged
person. One has to qualify Civil services and have to give foreign service
as his first preference, there is no such bar that a VH candidate cann't
hold that office. Nonetheless for being successful in this career one has
to be proficient in good understanding of foreign relations of India with
other country and good knowledge of various affairs between India and
allocated country .

I am not sure, but maybe the preview pane is causing the delay. When inside
the windows explorer window, press alt+p. It should turn off the preview
window. jaws will say checked or unchecked. keep it unchecked and your
problem might be solved.

Another way to do this is:
Again go to windows explorer,
Alt+t=tools,
O=options,
Ctrl+tab to View tab,
Tab until your in the tree view,
Now press the letter "s",
Until you hear "Show preview handlers in preview pane";
By default it's on,
Press the spacebar to turn this item off,
And tab to okay press enter.

Re: [AI] outlook express strange problem.

2013-12-04 Thread Amiyo Biswas

Go to Tools / options and press Ctrl+tab key thrice to access the Send tab.

The first option is Save copy of sent messages in the 'Sent Items' folder.
make sure it is checked. This is the default option. perhaps it has been
inadvertently unchecked.
