Re: [AI] what are the available careers for a M.Com passed student.

2014-01-23 Thread li...@srinivasu.org
What would you like to teach? What level of students you teach? What's your
long term and short term goals?

I suggest you please sit back, decide what you like, what are your strengths,
scope of growth, plan that you would want to implement. Do feel free to post
specific questions where you need help. Like if you decide to teach accounting,
you will first analyse what all you would need to take care for preparation, do
you see any accessibility challenges etc., once you identify your problem
statements, may be some of us would be able to help.

[AI] Software app 'Avaz' helps children with special needs express themselves

2014-01-23 Thread Pradeep banakar
Eleven-year-old special-needs children Yashank, Vijay and Sambhav, who study at
Umang School in Jaipur, are able to understand the world but unable to
communicate with it effectively. They have cerebral palsy, a condition marked
by impaired muscle coordination.

In the past, it would take a lot of time for teachers at Umang to understand
even simple messages such as "I want an apple" or "I am hungry" from these
children. But thanks to a picture-based software application, Avaz, that is
changing. Avaz, developed by Chennai-based Invention Labs, allows the children
to communicate by pointing out the pictures on a tablet using the software.

It also gives voice output, helping them to learn better-a marked improvement
from the paperbased picture communication book they used earlier. This
innovation has enabled the firm to bag customers, such as Los Angeles Unified
School District-the second-largest public school system in the United
States-and Autism-Denmark, an association to advance the rights of persons with
autism.

The company's founder, 32-year-old Ajit Narayanan worked at a US-based hardware
and software firm American Megatrends Inc before returning to set up Invention
Labs in 2007. Narayanan, an alumnus of IIT-Madras, initially launched the
product in 2009 as a Rs 30,000 communication device that helped people with
speech disorders. Now Invention Labs no longer markets the device.

Instead it now makes software that can be bought for Rs 5,000 and runs across
mobile platforms. "The basic idea of the Avaz is to convert muscle movements
into speech through features like pictures. For example, a user can put
together different words like 'I like' and then select a picture of an apple.
The sentence is constructed pictorially," said Narayanan.

The firm, which was incubated at IIT Madras, reached an inflection point in
2012 after deciding to turn its expertise to software. Besides India, Invention
Labs now sells the software app for around Rs 5,000 in developed markets such
as Europe, United States and Australia. In fact, the Danish and Italian version
of Avaz is the only app available there to help the autistic, claimed
Narayanan. It has improved the lives of both parents and children.

"After few attempts of trying to convey something, my daughter would get angry,
if we were not able to understand her," said Radha Mani, mother of 18-year-old
Dharunika who has cerebral palsy. "Her vocabulary has also improved, other
solutions had limited vocabulary."

Invention Labs has received government grants and loans of about Rs 40 lakh
from Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and a bank. Narayanan,
who has been granted 28 patents by the US authorities, is now scouting for
venture capital funding or a strategic investor. "Apart from patents, we will
evaluate the company on the team, market size, differentiated technology or
intellectual property," said Sandeep Singhal, managing director of Nexus
Venture Partners, which manages around $600 million.

US-based Artiman Ventures, which manages a $750-million fund and makes
investments in companies with large opportunities and no identifiable
competitors, also sees what Invention Labs is doing as a big opportunity. "It
is good to have a broad-based technology so that more people can benefit from
it," said Ramesh Radhakrishnan, a partner at Artiman Ventures.

Invention Labs is also working on other technologies which will enable
personalised therapy based on data analysis. It expects to achieve revenue of
Rs 12 crore in 2015 from Avaz-related products. "The key to scale is to build a
strong differentiation around intellectual property and not just around price,"
said Nexus' Singhal.

[AI] circular of BSNL broadband concession

Dear friends,

Can someone send the circular useful for availing BSNL broadband
concession for visually challenged? After the reduction of 10%
concession for PSU employees, its becoming difficult to convince that
the 20% for visually challenged remains as it was.

Re: [AI] issue regarding automatic opening of unwanted website.

2014-01-23 Thread jaisonay...@gmail.com
I too faced the problem a few days ago. I then scanned my pc with MSE and it
found some win32 adware that present advertisements. When I removed them, the
problem was solved.

Re: [AI] PwD recruitment drive in MNC bank

2014-01-23 Thread Vamshi. G
I think an organisation like Enable India would have done its best to
convince the MNC to recruit blind persons. I welcome this initiative.
Who knows? May be the post identified involves some verification for
which magnifiers are used. Is there any technology available for
blind persons that can facilitate them in verifying signatures, hand
written texts, etc?

2014-01-23 Thread Vamshi. G
I'm also facing the same problem with Windows 7 and IE 11. I think it
has got something to do with any tool bars or search bars installed.
I got rid of one such search add on in firefox and solved the problem.
But I'm unable to remove a similar add on in IE 11.

[AI] Man Saved From Blindness By Gene Therapy

2014-01-23 Thread shahnaz

Man Saved From Blindness By Gene Therapy.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/man-saved-blindness-gene-therapy/story?id=21578118&singlePage=true

help Courtesy Nick Tuftnell
At age 10 Nick Tuftnell knew he was going to end up blind after being diagnosed
with the genetic condition choroideremia.
The condition leads to the death of light-absorbing cells in the eye. The cells
die because of a mutated gene in certain ocular cells, which eventually leads
to blindness.
“I knew my granddad had it. I remember seeing him in the latter stages of life
and he was completely blind,” said Tuftnell, now 38.
After his condition was confirmed, Tuftnell said he had nothing to do but wait
for his eyesight to slowly dim and darken over time.
“All the doctors could say is ‘Your son is going to go blind, see you later,’”
said Tufnell of receiving his diagnosis.
As he grew older his eyesight has diminished to the point where he can no
longer drive due to poor peripheral vision and has severe difficulty moving
around at night.
“I can’t walk around at night, it’s that bad,” said Tuftnell. “I don’t have any
peripheral vision…eventually it’ll get like I’m looking through toilet rolls.”
Tuftnell said his doctors estimated that he had around “ten years of useful
vision left.”
However, two years ago Tuftnell took part in a groundbreaking study where gene
therapy was used to treat his deteriorating condition.
The results of the study were published last week in the Lancet Medical
Journal.
Tuftnell was one of six patients in a study from the University of Oxford, who
underwent gene therapy to help stop the deterioration caused by choroideremia.
To help the dying ocular cells, doctors injected working versions of the gene
into Tuftnell's eye. The gene can then start to “fix” the cells by patching
missing genetic data.
Virus particles were used to deliver the genes in fluid behind the retina.
Dr. Robert MacLaren, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and
lead author of the study, said all the patients had choroideremia, which would
eventually have left them blind.
“The key thing about our study that is new is that we’ve gone in before they
lost their visual acuity,” said MacLaren, who pointed out that two patients had
20/20 vision before the surgery. “The best way to fix [cells is to] put in the
missing gene before they die.”
MacLaren said he warned participants that undergoing the operation for the
study could mean their vision was more impaired than before the surgery.
“I talked to them and said you’re going to be like one of the first
astronauts,” said MacLaren.
The treatment included an operation that would temporarily involve detaching
Tuftnell’s retina. It’s a procedure that is done only in the rarest of
circumstances because it can result in permanent damage to the patient’s
eyesight.
Tuftnell said after meeting with MacLaren and the other researchers he decided
to take the risk.
An additional factor that led Tuftnell to want to try the surgery was the fact
that he had just lost his wife to cancer six months earlier.
Tuftnell said he felt he had to try, “any chance I’ve got of trying to save"
his vision to stay active with his now 5-year-old son Theo.
Gene Therapy Gives Hope to the Blind
According to the study, two of the patients with worse eyesight than Tuftnell
had their vision significantly improved by the surgery. The other four,
including Tuftnell, had their night vision improve or kept their eyesight in
the treated eye at the same level.
While MacLean said it is too early to tell if the therapy will be permanent, he
said none of the participants had continued deterioration in the treated eye.
MacLean said going forward he hopes to expand the study to clinics in America
and Canada.
Additionally he hopes the study means new research into similar treatments for
other common causes of blindness such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.
Tuftnell said his treated eye has improved slightly, but his untreated eye has
continued to deteriorate.
“It’s like being given an arm back that you’ve lost,” said Tuftnell of his new
prognosis.

Re: [AI] PwD recruitment drive in MNC bank

2014-01-23 Thread Himanshu Sahu
According to me it is a nice initiative, because as I pointed out MNCs
are not under compulsion of implementing 3% reservation...
At the same time this is discriminatory, because the MNC has excluded
full blind from recruitment...
We can extract different meanings from this advertisement:
1. On a positive note: The MNC is beginning at least from low vision
and in future, they may recruit full blind as well.
2. They may be concerned about the extra expenditure of SRS.
3. The NGO should have persuaded them to also recruit full blind,
however, we don't know whether they have done it or not!
4. As a staunch supporter of equality, I must say that this is
discriminatory, which I have already done, but I can not ignore the
fact that even after reservation full blind are sidelined by giving
preference to low vision candidates for filling the quota, the MNC has
decided to recruit low vision people without having any such
compulsion...

[AI] NGO wishlist

2014-01-23 Thread Harish

Hello
Got a very relevant feedback regarding the session for NGO wishlist.

We often criticise NGO for failing expectations. The other side of the story
is it also true that we fall short of NGO's expectations. This is a two way
interaction and hence for a healthy interaction, it is necessary to meet up
with each others expectation levels.

More below.
Harish Kotian

Dear List Members

With the consent of the moderator want to add a point to the below session
of Access India Convention.

Original session details:
In the session: 12.30-100 the NGO wish list We would like members to bring
along a wish liston their expectations from NGO's. We shall make the final
wish list available to all NGO's. All delegates will be given a chance to
make their case on the wish list. There would not be any discussion per say.
This is the "AAM Admi's" point of view.

This is not to be used for criticising any entity.

My suggestion:
Its good to have the wish list from the community about their expectation
from the NGO's.
My say is that we should also discuss as how an individual wishes to
contribute to the NGO's, or the community at large.

Example, all the NGO's having computer training project are currently facing
problem in finding, recruiting appropriate trainer. How can the community
help or fecilitate NGO's to resolve this problem.

Similarly NVDA development has been initiated within our country, how does
the community look forward to contribute to its development. It could be via
sending queries, solutions, fund the project & many more.

Wish to highlight point that as a community if we are responsible to receive
then we are equally responsible to give too.

Need members to discuss & share their views on the same.

Please note the examples are not influenced by any individual, NGO or any
institution, they are purely common problems used as examples.

Hope to have a healthy discussion on the same.

2014-01-23 Thread Yogesh Chhabra
no no no, currently the braille press unit at NAB delhi is making
books for NAB delhi students only. that is the main reason for delay.
alternatively, you have the option to take the book in audio or e-text
format for reading.

Warm regards,
Yogesh Chhabra

Re: [AI] PwD recruitment drive in MNC bank

2014-01-23 Thread Himanshu Sahu
Though a nice initiative by MNC, STILL discriminatory, as it excludes
persons with full blindness and also suggest that the employer will
not provide SRS to low vision candidates. Nevertheless, since they are
not under compulsion of 3% reservation, we may appriciate it as a
welcome beginning in larger context and hope that in future,
opportunities will be offered to full blind as well...

if the data is not of daily use then you should copy it in an external
hard drive and keep it on a safe place.

Hi
If the data is not very sensitive, keeping it in the dropbox folder is a good
option.
You can restore back the file if it got corrupted on a later date.

Subject: [AI] Whats the best method to keep safe your data?

Hi friends I have lots of data on my hard drive, but I have
experienced that few files have been corrupted when I tried to open
those, specially Kurzweil format files. Is there any way to keep safe
my data so that it could be untuched for so long? Say for e.g. one way
could be to keep data in a zip format but if I am making zip archive
of large folder, such as more then 10GB, it takes too much time in
creating its archive. Is archive material safe for longer time?

Re: [AI] converting books into digital e books

2014-01-23 Thread Yogesh Chhabra
hi, you can take NAB delhi library membership and fulfill your
requirements. NAB delhi library provides books in these formats:
1. daisy audio format (a format to read audio books)
2. E-text format (electronic text format to reed books from a screen reader).

if the books required by you are not in the library, you can give the
desired printed book and request the library to convert in one of the
formats mentioned above which suits you.

warm regards,
Yogesh Chhabra

[AI] Whats the best method to keep safe your data?

2014-01-23 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafel
Hi friends I have lots of data on my hard drive, but I have
experienced that few files have been corrupted when I tried to open
those, specially Kurzweil format files. Is there any way to keep safe
my data so that it could be untuched for so long? Say for e.g. one way
could be to keep data in a zip format but if I am making zip archive
of large folder, such as more then 10GB, it takes too much time in
creating its archive. Is archive material safe for longer time?

Re: [AI] converting books into digital e books

2014-01-23 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Otherwise, you have to scan them and convert them in to readable text.
I would advice you to scan them as PDF image and then convert them into HTML
files, as they contain a lot of graphics.
I do the same with my sighted daughter's books, as I take her studies...
Still, graphics are left undescribed, but readability is there, which is not
there in word files with graphics..

[AI] GW Micro Announces Window-Eyes Certification

2014-01-23 Thread Yogesh Chhabra
GW Micro, Inc. is proud to announce the Window-Eyes Certification Program.
The Window-Eyes Certification Program is a professional certification that
enables individuals to test their Window-Eyes knowledge and become
certified, which will demonstrate competency and proficiency in the product.

The overall goal of the Window-Eyes certification program is to provide a
vehicle for individuals to obtain an officially endorsed Window-Eyes
certification from GW Micro as well as to help foster the growth of a
strong community of Window-Eyes users. In order to receive the Window-Eyes
certification, you must pass an online knowledge based test.

The Window-Eyes online certification test is available to any individual
who wishes to assess their Window-Eyes knowledge and attempt to become
Window-Eyes certified. Potential candidates for Window-Eyes certification
include teachers, students, trainers, consultants, vocational
rehabilitation staff, Window-Eyes users, AT professionals, and IT
professionals.
What does the test cover?

The certification covers the following categories:

   - Window-Eyes Features
   - Window-Eyes Installation
   - Window-Eyes Hotkeys
   - Window-Eyes User Interface
   - Window-Eyes and Microsoft Office
   - Navigating a Web Page with Window-Eyes
   - Window-Eyes Apps
   - Window-Eyes and Braille
   - Accessing Window-Eyes Support Resources/General Troubleshooting
   - Window-Eyes Training

Those who seek certification should study the Window-Eyes
manual,
and the Window-Eyes tutorial
(also found on the
Window-Eyes CD) as all questions can be answered using
these resources.

The test will consist of 100 multiple choice questions with a maximum
length of 2 hours. The test may be taken on any computer that has a high
speed Internet connection. It is recommended that you have Window-Eyes
running while taking the test in case you need to quickly access
information for the test.

To pass the test, you must score 80% or higher on the test. The test
questions are selected at random from a large random pool of questions, so
each test will be different.

The Window-Eyes certification test is available in English and other
languages may be added at a later time.
What does certification cost?

The cost to take the Window-Eyes certification test is $99. The cost to
take a certification renewal test is only $39, and is required to become
certified for a new version (major upgrade) of Window-Eyes and can be
obtained after the new version is released.

The fee must be paid prior to taking the certification test. Individuals
can pay for their Window-Eyes certification test by calling GW Micro's
Orders Department at (260) 489-3671 or

order a certification test
online.
You will be asked for your payment information when you complete the
ordering process. After placing your order, you will receive a unique order
number which is required to begin the Window-Eyes certification test.

Test takers who do not pass the test may retake the test after a 30-day
period has passed, but will need to pay the $99 fee each time the test is
retaken. You may take the test as many times as needed.
How do I take the test?

After ordering a Window-Eyes certification test, visit the Certification
Test page to get
started. Enter your order code, email address (optional), check the check
box to that you acknowledge that you will have two hours to complete the
test and then activate the Begin Test Now button to start the test. The two
hour timer for your test will start after activating the Begin Test Now
button.
What happens after you take the test?

Upon successful completion of the test, you will receive a certificate of
completion mailed to you. Additionally, you will receive a Window-Eyes
certification logo that you may use on your email signature and other
materials, such as your personal or company website. The Window-Eyes
certification logo means that you have successfully completed the
Window-Eyes certification test and have a thorough understanding of
Window-Eyes and Window-Eyes concepts. Window-Eyes certification *does not
indicate that you are a certified trainer*, but that you do have
substantial Window-Eyes knowledge which can help you gain valuable
experience and credibility in the accessibility field.

Warm regards,

Yogesh Chhabra

[AI] ‘123456’ dethrones ‘password’ as worst password

2014-01-23 Thread Suchentan Reddy
Kounteya Sinha, TNN Jan 22, 2014, 06.00AM IST

LONDON: Internet security firm SplashData has released its list of the
worst passwords of 2013. King of terrible passwords, 'password', has
finally been unseated from its throne. It has been displaced by
'123456' as the world's most popular worst password.
This year's list was influenced by the large number of passwords from
Adobe users posted online by security consulting firm Stricture
Consulting Group following Adobe's well-publicized security breach
"Seeing passwords like 'adobe123' and 'photoshop' on this list offers
a good reminder not to base your password on the name of the website
or application you are accessing," says Morgan Slain, CEO of
SplashData.
SplashData's list of frequently-used passwords shows that many people
continue to put themselves at risk by using weak passwords. Some other
passwords in the Top 10 include 'qwerty,' 'abc123,' '11,' and
'iloveyou'.
SplashData's top 25 was compiled from files containing millions of
stolen passwords posted online during the previous year. The company
advises consumers or businesses using any of the passwords on the list
to change them immediately.
SplashData suggests making passwords more secure with these tips: "Use
passwords of eight characters or more using mixed characters. But even
passwords with common substitutions like 'dr4mat1c' can be vulnerable
to attackers' increasingly-sophisticated technology, and random
combinations like 'j%7K&yPx$' can be difficult to remember. One way to
create more secure passwords that are easy to recall is to use
passphrases — short words with spaces or other characters separating
them. It's best to use random words rather than common phrases. For
example, 'cakes years birthday' or 'smiles—light—skip?'"
It added: "Avoid using the same username/password combination for
multiple websites. Especially risky is using the same password for
entertainment sites that you do for online e-mail, social networking,
or financial service sites. Use different passwords for each new
website or service you sign up for"
Around 2.9 million people across the globe, using popular software
applications like Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat have had their
private information like passwords and even credit and debit card
details stolen in a highly-sophisticated cyber-attack on Adobe.
