Hello,

Is this file a audio file that is either mp3 or mp4. I tried opening
this file, it's in the form of binery .exe file. Why is it so.
Secondly the file size is too large. Can't it be compressed using some
software in lossy format?

Thanks...

[AI] A risky road for blind students in Rohini, Somreet Bhattacharya

2014-08-16 Thread avinash shahi
NEW DELHI: Students at the All India Confederation of Blinds in Rohini
often get knocked by cars while finding their way to the school
premises. Drivers backing without warning or looking around had left
three of the girls bruised earlier. The students have a tough time
weaving through the vehicles parked haphazardly.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/A-risky-road-for-blind-students-in-Rohini/articleshow/40311584.cms
A slip road between Rajeev Gandhi Cancer Hospital, on Bhagwan Mahavir
Marg, and a zonal office of North Corporation leads to the school.
According to a traffic police order, this road was supposed to remain
free for the students, who were trained to get off at the bus stop and
count their steps to the school while keeping to the left side. If
they deviate from the path, it is very difficult for them to pick
their way back. Even a few steps to get around an obstacle like a
parked car can make them lose their bearings. The absence of a guide,
coupled with speeding vehicles, makes the girls all the more
vulnerable.

The drivers generally don't give us any signal expecting us to see
them. They end up grazing us or knocking us down, said Saraswati, one
of the students. They have memorized their way to the service lane
from the bus stop and use the slip road before taking a left turn
towards the school. Traffic cops had even fenced off the left side and
issued a no-parking order. But the barricades have been removed and
motorists are back to their old ways, said J L Kaul, founder member
of the school. He said the slip road now has vehicles parked on both
sides.

Most of these cars belong to the people visiting the Rohini zonal
office across the road, locals said. The space allotted for parking
inside the zonal office was used for dumping garbage and damaged
vehicles. The underground parking served as office space. We tried to
remove the dumped vehicles but it was taking too long so we gave up,
said a senior corporation official.

The locals also observed that the service lane beside Bhagwan Mahavir
Marg which could have been an alternative parking space was dug up
recently. Not only does it pose another hurdle for the students but
also forces visitors to park their vehicles near the blind school.
Worse still, the slip road is two-way, so the students have to run the
gauntlet of traffic coming from the other side as well.

 Hi.
1 I want to experiment with different speech recognition softwares.
PL] Fair enough. There are not too many such programs around.
2 I am able to efficiently operate the computer via a keyboard and
screen reader so I don't require Dragon Naturally Speaking. I would

Naturally Speaking you require JSay (may have spelt it wrongly) and
 JAWS of course.
PL] Given your use case, you do not need J-Say or jaws. Dragon is
 natively
accessible and you can use it even with NVDA. Get the professional
 version
if you can because that allows you to create commands etc. If not, if you
just want dictation, then even the home or premium version is suitable.
3 It doesn't matter to me what Google does with my text because I will
not be sending any personal information and will be doing it all for
 experimenting purposes.
 PL] sounds good.
4 I want to check out Google Speech Recognition because it is
web-based and made by a reputed company, but I am unable to find any
website. Doesn't Google Speech Recognition have its own website???

Mr Dear Rahul sir I think first we should equip with new and

only we need to practice with some research and innovations to face

On 8/15/14, Rahul Bajaj rahul.bajaj10...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi all,

I hope this message finds you well.
In the last one year, I have done a large array of interesting
internships in different areas of the law.
While I have mostly had very rewarding and enriching experiences, I
have also had to deal with a unique set of challenges along the way.
For me, the greatest challenge has been being able to perform my
assignments as expeditiously as my sighted counterparts.
In most successful and prestigious organizations, especially in the
private sector, you are not only required to perform your assignments
well, but are also expected to complete your work within a stipulated
time period. Therefore, it is critical to maintain efficiency in order
to be able to compete with your counterparts.

I am often required to access material which is not in an accessible
format and has to be converted into an accessible format by using Fine
 Reader, etc.
Similarly, I often find it hard to use advanced features in MS Office
like track changes, footnotes, etc as expeditiously as I would like
to. Don't even get me started on Adobe Reader!
Even though this can, to some extent, be attributed to the fact that I
am not as tech savvy as I need to be, I believe that it also has to do
with some inherent flaws of assistive technology which can often be
 slow and unreliable.
As a result, I invariably have to invest more time and energy into my
work than my sighted counterparts in order to be able to produce
 substantive and satisfactory results.
However, this solution really doesn't work in organizations where
every employee has a heavy workload, so everyone has to work for at
least 12-14 hours a day to get their work done.
In such a case, there is virtually no scope for a visually impaired
employee to invest more time and energy than his sighted counterparts.
So, the upshot is that the visually impaired employee is assigned
lesser work which leads to lower job satisfaction.
In sum, my uniform experience has taught me that, even though
assistive technology has made it possible for us to access information
that was hitherto inaccessible to us, it is still the next best thing
to actually reading the information and not a substitute for it.
I'd love to know what you all think about this proposition and whether
or not your experience bears this out.
What strategies have you adopted for increasing your productivity at
 the workplace?
I look forward to hearing from you.

 Best,
 Rahul

I have started my career as medical transcriptionist and business

accessibility issue hampers me to go ahead and is pushing me behind.

I would like to know how JAWS or NVDA supports the oracle-related
tools like SQL developer, Toad etc. JAWS supports SQL developer tool
to certain extent after installing JDK and JRE. I am not sure how it
 supports other oracle-related tools.

When we work for oracle SQL development or oracle DBA, should we
connect with multiple servers remotely? If yes, how can we connect
servers with the support of JAWS with multiple servers? Even though we
get remote access license for JAWS, how can we install the JAWS in

One solution is to install open office. Then you can open the file and copy
the text on to word 2003 document. Otherwise you can download the free ms

You must deal with each choice separately.

A step I have skipped is to check, given the known facts, what can you

 Hi.
1 I want to experiment with different speech recognition softwares.
PL] Fair enough. There are not too many such programs around.
2 I am able to efficiently operate the computer via a keyboard and
screen reader so I don't require Dragon Naturally Speaking. I would
have loved to test it but I have heard that to successfully use Dragon

Hi Ajay,

My answers are inline and are prefixed by my initials.
Hi sir,
1. Which OCR would you recommend then which can process tables correctly?
PL] The kurzweil 1000.
2. Most of the times I use the features highlighted by you but the
main problem lies in aligning graphs/ pictures/ other objects in
either my word docs or PPTs.
PL] This is where templates are handy because they already have place
holders for images etc. You can look at the properties of these objects and
try doing the math. It is easier to get a sighted colleague to quickly
adjust a few pictures. Any reviewer will help you with this. In PowerPoint,
Jaws does tell you if a picture is covering or overlapping some text
element. Usually, the trick is to move the picture away until it is in the
clear.
3. I fully agree that keeping jaws on a faster rate really helps. I
keep it at around 70% and it has saved my life in a lot of surprise
tests smiles!
PL] True and I have had several colleagues ask me which language is my
computer speaking? grin

Re: [AI] the best way of solving puzzle type of questions for a visually challenged perspective?

2014-08-16 Thread Vamshi. G
Hi Mohit,

I'm not an expert in solving these questions. But my suggestion is
not to wait till you get all the combinations correct. Every time you
find something or discount something, look at the answers to see if
you have already cracked it. For example, if the question contains
Sachin, Modi and Sharuk and sports, films and politics. When you know
Sachin belongs to sports, look at the answers to see how many options
contain this combination. Usually you will get the right answer after
two matches and its not necessary to match all the options before
checking on the answer.

i advise all to skip these complex puzzles in exams, finish easier
ones like strong and weeker arguments, sylogisms etc first. then these
complex puzzles can be taken later when time permits. else, these will
consume lot of time and we will end up attending very less questions
and fail in reasoning.

 Hi Mohib,

 1. Get your scribe to write down the known facts on scratch paper.
 2. Take the choices and parse them against the known facts.
 3. Can you make any deductions?

You must deal with each choice separately.

A step I have skipped is to check, given the known facts, what can you
infer? This is something you need to do mentally. If you like, you can
 write
down your inferences but beware of the time taken to do this.

Subject: [AI] the best way of solving puzzel type of questions for a
 visually challanged perspective?

what is the best and quickest way of solving these type of question in
examination hall? Because in examination hall we don't have any device
to assist with, and one visually challanged has to rely upon his
 memory only.

Question: Amit wishes to buy a magazine, four magazines one each on
politics, sports, Science and films are available to choose from.
They are edited by Feroz, Gurbaksh, Swami and Ila (not necessarily in
that order) and published by Aryan, Bharat, Charan and Dev Publishers
 (not necessarily in that order).
 Further it is given that,
 (i) Dev Publishers have published the magazine edited by Feroz.
(ii) The magazine on Politics is published by Aryan Publishers.
(iii)The magazine on films is edited by Swami and is not published by
Charan Publishers. (iv) The magazine on science is edited by Ila.

 select the correct answer

 1. The magazine on Science is published by?
 2. The magazine on sports is editted by?
 3. the magazine on film is?

[AI] Visually impaired pull off prize-winning march

2014-08-16 Thread timy sebastian
Students of Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind at the
IndependenceDay parade in Manekshaw Parade grounds on Friday

Mumbai Mirror
Maruthi K N was 11 when a bout of typhoid took away his vision. A large
number of surgeries could not restore the light in his dark world. Now
23, he was eagerness personified as he prepared to take part with the
team from the Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind at J P Nagar,
in the Independence Day parade held at Manekshaw Parade grounds. Draped
in the red-and-yellow team uniform, he said, I know the look of awe
people have when they see a parade because I have seen it before. But
for me now, the satisfaction is in hearing the thunderous applause the
audience gives when we parade in front of them.

The students at SRMAB prepared for over a month for the day. Their
coach, Thimmaiah, who is also their mobility and physical education
teacher, spent at least three hours with them every day, teaching them
things such as uniform marching and 90 degree turning - things that are
basic for the visually gifted. Thimmaiah said, Since most of the
students cannot see, we place in the front the partially-sighted ones
who hold long canes which the students can hold in a line till the back.
This way, the students at the back know when to take turns. Then we have
to teach them to raise their arm and legs in unison with the rest of the
contingent at a certain angle. But it is very pleasant to see the
students pick up the activities as fast as the visually gifted students,
and of course it is a matter of pride to see them perform this well in
the Independence Day parades.

Thimmaiah has been with the school since 1992 and they have been taking
part in the parades for the past 22 years. Except for thrice - when we
came second twice and third once - we have bagged the first place 41
times including the Republic Day parade. This is the 41st time we have
received the trophy and that is no small feat, said Thimmaiah holding
the trophy for first place in the specially-abled category.

S Eshwarappa, 18, was born blind and has never known the riot of colours
that surface during Independence Day celebration. He said, I have been
blind since birth and while I do not know what the celebrations look
like, I do like the sound of applause. That encourages me to take part
in each parade year after year. When Thimmaiah Sir asked me to take part
in the parade for the first time, I thought it was a very difficult
task. But he showed us the way and today we have come this far only
because of him. I could never imagine visually impaired people taking
part in such celebrations, but Thimmaiah Sir and the entire team at
SRMAB have made it possible.

[AI] Living for special children

2014-08-16 Thread avinash shahi
The Kumars with their daughter.-- Photo: Special Arrangement When
Krishna Kumar, a teacher with Kendriya Vidyalaya, R.K. Puram, Sector
2, gave birth to two special daughters, she and her husband, a
doctorate in chemistry from Pusa Research Institute Dr. Sushil Kumar,
didn't cry or feel bad about the gifts, as they put it. Instead they
decided to take care of their girls and also other 'such' children.
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/living-for-special-children/article6324915.ece
Since Ms. Kumar didn't know how to handle such kids, she visited
Aadi, a centre for special children at Dwarka. When her elder daughter
Sonal turned 18, the centre said they couldn't keep her any longer.
So, in 1996, she, with a homemaker Shuba Mukherjee, opened Udaan, a
home for special children in Delhi.

And by 2007, the Kumars opened another such centre with their own
money at Faridabad called Sonalsmriti.

The reason for opening it is heart wrenching.

Recalls Ms. Kumar, now retired and living in Greater Kailash: Sonal
died in 2002 after reaching the age of 23. I went into depression,
more so because she was very intelligent and headstrong. She wanted to
become something in life but her body didn't cooperate. She was well
aware of the happenings around her like any normal educated person.
For instance, on the death of Rajiv Gandhi, she didn't eat her meals.
It was only after his cremation that we could persuade her to eat.

Ms. Kumar wanted to keep Sonal alive in her memory. So she bought an
inexpensive plot in a rather deserted area at that time, Greenfield
Colony at Faridabad, and dedicated five years to make a spacious,
barrier-free building for the special children. Now, it is a
well-equipped centre with trained staff which includes
physiotherapists, neurotherapists and support staff. What makes it
unique is that it caters to children Below Poverty.

About her younger daughter Nupur, now 31, Krishna: She is extremely
ill. She was hospitalised for days and has come back yesterday. Now
she cannot have diapers as it generates rashes, she needs someone to
help her. So is the case with the support staff. Says Ms. Kumar:
Whenever I get overwhelmed and cry, my staff tells me, `Why do you
cry for the kind of kids you have, rather why don't you think that
because of your kids, we are able to run our kitchen. `Aapke bachchon
ki vajah se hamare ghar ka choolha jalta hai'. This gives me strength
to go on.

Ms. Kumar is very clear about one thing: I don't keep more than 20
children at a time, so that every child can get dedicated personal
attention.

Sonalsmriti runs on funds donated by people. Incidentally, she was
nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for doing real ground work at
the loca

[AI] 'Market-ability: Wanted Umbrella helps the differently abled find the right match'

2014-08-16 Thread avinash shahi
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/stoi/deep-focus/These-startups-are-special/articleshow/40319852.cms
Market-ability: Wanted Umbrella helps the differently abled find the
right match.RELATED
Kalyani Khona came up with the idea of launching a matchmaking agency
while trying to identify her true calling in life. But after doing
some research, the young Mumbaikar decided to make her agency a more
specialized one -- by catering to the differently abled.

With over 40 million disabled people in India, only 5% or less get
married, says Khona, who launched Wanted Umbrella on July 1. For an
annual fee of Rs 3,000, the agency arranges curated events and group
dinners where singles can be more relaxed instead of the conventional
'chai' meetings.

Khona is part of a small but growing breed of young entrepreneurs who
are setting up businesses to cater to people with disability. The last
few years have seen a range of services come up -- from matrimonial
agencies and customized cars to lifestyle magazines. Persons with
Disabilities (PWD) were always a market but businesses addressed them
as a charitable model. Now that disabled people have better education,
they want to improve their standard of living, and aspire for
everything that other people have access to, says Shilpi Kapoor, MD
of BarrierBreak, a company which helps make educational institutions
and technology companies disabled-friendly.

Upasana Makati, who launched India's first English lifestyle magazine
in Braille last May, says that she realized that a magazine for the
visually-impaired was long overdue. 'White Print', a monthly, covers
everything from travel, food and Bollywood to music and politics and
is priced at Rs 30. I was doing a PR job but wanted to do something
different, a venture I could connect with. That's when I realized that
there are plenty of magazines around but none for the visually
impaired, says Makati, who prints her magazine at the National
Association for the Blind. Today, they print 300 copies a month and
have a subscriber base across India. People are getting more aware
and sensitive, which is why you see a lot of young people taking the
lead and launching businesses for the disabled, she says.

In Bangalore, 46-year-old Vidhya Ramasubban started Kickstart, a
disabledfriendly cab service, last December.

Though they have three vehicles at present, the service is already
planning to expand. We get three to four calls in a day. We started
small but now hope to get 50 vehicles, says Ramasubban, adding that
Mphasis, an IT consultancy firm, helped her start the venture.

Each car takes about a month to be modified. Currently, the majority
of their clients are people who need to visit the hospital regularly --
patients of strokes and spinal cord injury who need rehabilitation,
and those who need to undergo dialysis. The percentage of working
people who use the cab service for daily commute is still small. One
of them is wheelchair-bound Deepa Maski, who no longer has to depend
on her parents every time she wants to go shopping to a nearby mall.
The cars have ramps for wheelchairs and the seats are also detachable
and can be converted into makeshift wheelchairs, says Maski, 28.

There are also a number of businesses across the country that
customize cars for the differently abled. In Chennai, P Padmanabhan,
owner of Mobility Aids Sales and Services, has modified more than 400
cars since he launched the company in 2004. Modifying a car for a
wheelchair-bound person involves removing the pedals -- clutch, brake
and accelerator -- from the floor and bringing them up to the level of
the steering wheel. Padmanabhan, who is also wheelchair-bound, says it
was his struggle to attain some level of mobility that inspired him to
set up the business. The majority of disabled people cannot afford
cars, says Padmanabhan who charges anywhere between Rs 12,000 to Rs
70,000, depending on the model of the vehicle and the degree of
customization required. He is planning to slowly expand his business
to other cities but says it will take time. We are looking for
dealers who are sensitive towards PWD and we'll also train them to
deal with these special customers, says Padmanabhan.

For the differently-abled, such services can be life-changing. The
ability to move, and commute can lift 50% of the depression of being
disabled, says Delhi-based Rajiv Virat, who drives a modified Maruti
800. Having lost mobility due to multiple sclerosis when he was just
17, Virat now plays tennis on wheels, has participated in the Delhi
and Mumbai marathons and driven to Ladakh.

Khona is optimistic about the future of her business. NGOs catering
to their needs using limited funds was the best they ever got until
now. But it is actually a niche and due to limited competition, the
scope of profits and likelihood that the business will work out are
higher, she says. The bonus: changing the lives of people.
