Disabled take to gadgets, establish network of joy

For years, text messaging was the only way for the hearing and speech impaired
to have their say but the advent of affordable 3G technology has quite
literally widened their circle of friends.
Buying a smartphone rang in a whole new life for L Ravi. The 53-year-old
cleaner who lives in Madurai discovered that he could make video calls using 3G
technology - which means he can communicate easily in sign language with his
hearing and speech impaired friends.

"My parents found it hard to send and receive text messages, which was the only
way people with hearing and speech impairments could communicate," said Ravi's
daughter Priya. "With 3G video calling, they are able to communicate with their
friends in sign language. More than 100 of my father's speech-impaired friends
across the country are now in touch with him after he got a smartphone," said
Priya. "Face-to-face communication is far better than texting."

For years, text messaging was the only way for the hearing and speech impaired
to have their say but the advent of affordable 3G technology has quite
literally widened their circle of friends. They can video chat and use Skype on
their cellphones using sign language to connect with more friends and relatives
across the state. A number of apps that also translate sign language into
speech help them overcome communication barriers between disabled and
non-disabled people.

Though they could text, they watched mutely as the rest of the world
communicated in a heartbeat using mobile phones. "It's made such a difference
to their lives, all speech impaired people in his circle of friends use 3G
connection in order to stay in touch with each other," said Priya. Her mother
Radha, who also has a speech impairment, has also taken to video calling.

"We have been using 3G video calling for the past year. We can stay in touch
easily when I travel," said T K Shaishree, whose father is speech impaired.

K Mahendran, who has a hearing and speech impairment, said, "It helps when we
fall sick. I just make a video call to my friend who has similar disabilities
and explain the problem in sign language."

The internet is filled with YouTube videos that teach the disabled to use ATMs
and conduct bank transactions. S Manoharan, president of Madurai District Deaf
Development Association, said, "The internet has helped us grasp basic
information on day-to-day activities. There are sign language videos online
that explain how to use an ATM."

M Sahadevan, who is visually impaired and is a professor at Presidency College
in Chennai, said, "Technology is a great aid in the classroom. I not only use
it to make life easier for disabled students but other students also find
lessons more stimulating when I use software and aids."

Videoconferencing software is helping the disabled form groups to share their
opinions on current affairs. K Prakashan, a disabled person, said, "We
regularly discuss current affairs on a video conference. The software is cheap
and easily available. We're slowly opening up to gadgets and technology as a
community ."

Software, apps open up a whole new world to disabled students

In the classroom, at social events and even while shopping, tech nology has
made life a little bit easier for the disabled. Readers help the blind access
scores of books online, MP3 and other devices help the deaf record speeches in
class and translate them with software into a format they can understand and
tablets help people with cerebral palsy , autism and other disabilities
communicate.

"There are many aids that help the disabled. For instance, we have a computer
mouse with accessibility switches on it so a person with differential ability
can use it easily. This helps disabled children work on a computer with ease,"
said S Smitha, member of Vidya Sagar Disability Legislation Unit, Chennai.
Websites that follow the WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) rules
gives people with low vision access. "A person with low vision can hear the
words that appears as text on the screen. So they can `read' without being
dependent on anyone else," she explained. "These innovations are making us more
independent."

K Rashmi, whose son is autistic, said, "When my son was four, we used a
software called `Words Around Me' to help him with his reading difficulties. An
animated character would appear on the screen and help hm identify a misspelled
word. Technology has helped him learn without too much difficulty or stress."
After her son turned 18, she began showing him Powerpoint presentations on
activities such as baking. "We are now using software to prepare banners and
letterheads to help him learn the basics of computer programming," she said.

Let me know if I can help you in any way. Do mention your Jaws

I personally have tried two products, namely AVG and MSE, I prefer
MSE, because AVG is a bit advanced, and partially inaccessible, while
MSE gives me basic security, with a straightforward and minimalistic
interface.
I recently faced an issue with AVG, which Amar is going to help me out
with tonight, if he is unsuccessful, then I shall go back to the good
old MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).
Apart from MSE, there is no other anti virus product that is 100%
accessible.
However, some products that I have heard to be usable enough are AVG,
Avast, Avira, Quickheal, Viper and... well... thats about it. None of
the tough competitors in the antiv virus market such as Kaspersky,
Norton or Bitdefender are used by VIs. Though some did create an NVDA
addon for Kaspersky, he never continued it, and I never tried it
personally, so if someone has some time, go test the NVDA Kaspersky
addon with Kaspersky, and share your thoughts here about it, would be
interesting to hear them.

The Indigo site is accessible, lesser is their mobile app, though an
experienced TalkBack user can get it to work. But the obvious
limitation is that you can book tickets on the Indigo airline only.

no captcha no worries of selecting pair of source and destination,

ya, i have used makemytrip website for viewing the air routes for my

been came across on makemytrip for performing the said task.

hope this might be of some help.

Try Cleartrip. You can access the calendar through the Jaws cursor.
http://www.cleartrip.com
Another option would be to install the mobile apps of cleartrip,
MakeMyTrip or Yatra on your Android smartphone if you are using the
device and the platform. On Android, they are all functional enough
with some accessibility issues.

 To,
 Shri. Sadananda Gowda
 Hon'ble Union Minister for Railways
 Government of India

 Dear Sir,
Sub: Request to address various issues concerning persons with
 disability in travel by railway
We are a state chapter of leading self help organization of the blind
in the country (National Federation of the Blind India) and affiliated
 to Disability NGO Alliance (Karnataka)
National Federation of the Blind Karnataka is striving to facilitate
effective and meaningful inclusion, empowerment, holistic development,
promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms of
persons with visual disabilities in the state.
We wish to draw your kind attention to the problems faced by persons
with disabilities, while travelling with the Indian Railways. Most of
these issues had been raised with your ministry earlier, with no
 avail.
Some of such key issues include the following

 1.Concessions
 (i) Extend Concession to all Trains: The Railways have
been providing concessions to certain categories of disabled persons
in mail & express trains, which now has been extended to Rajdhani &
Shatabdi also. But the concession is not provided in Garib Rath,
Toronto and some other trains We request that concessions be provided
 on these trains also.
(ii) Validity of Disability Certificates: Currently, a
separate certificate has to be obtained for availing railway
concession. The railways should accept Disability Certificates or
cards as valid proof of the disability of the concerned person inline
with air india and do away with the requirement of a separate
 certificate.
(iii) Travelling without Escorts: At present it is mandatary
for blind and hearing impaired to travel with escort in Rajdhani and
Shathabdhi Trains for availment of benefit of concession in fair.
There is no logic to restrict them travel with escort in Rajdhani and
Shatabdhi Trains while they are allowed to travel with or without
escort in all other trains. So the restriction on the blind and
hearing impaired to travel with escort in Rajadhani and shatabdhi
 trains should be withdrawn.

[AI] My fabulous experience of Puri trip.

2014-11-10 Thread nitesh gupta
Hi Friends,

I want to brief my puri tour so that other VI also gets anchorage to visit.

Highlights:

1: the biggest highlight of my trip was named as Golden beach.
" It is a smooth and a silky beach. We [VI] can enjoy the tides
equally to sighted. In fact I would say that we can enjoy more then
sighted for so many reasons. In Puri there is a Mela kind of
arrangement at eve daily. Enjoying lemon tea, fish, Golgappa, Chat,
boiled egg, Chaumin, Sweets, Narial Pani with listening Shanks and
buying things ETC are the feeling of heavenly enjoyment, if u feel"

2: Konark Temple.
" Though Puri and Bhubneshwer are flooded with temples. Also to be
remembered that Panda's are ready to Snatch your pockets in the name
of God.
But Konark is really different. I suggest don't forget to take guide
to see the temple. Don't forget you have spent a lot for the trip, a
guide may add 150 in your pocket but this will definitely add
thousands in your pleasure.
By chance I got a very perfect one, he was approximately 60, he
explained each and every thing including the sexual architecture. I
touched the things I can and separately I told him to explain the
architecture, which were not to be explained publicly. Ultimately I
was satisfied"
[I want to put one of my view hear, is it necessary and correct to
picturise sexual things in temple?
Would it not be more proper to picturise things, which may convert our
society into more suitable to live. like a hero figure saving a woman,
A person marrying a girl without dowry, a man or a woman sacrificing
his/her life for the upliftment of weaker sections of society?

3: Chilka Lake.
" I went Chilka Lake in morning. There I took a boat costing 1300.
There was also boat taking 2700. It is not to be confused by the rate,
actually the boat is same, only the difference is of time, the boat
will give.
I enjoyed the boat. The house boad like boat halted at the sea mouth,
it is a kind of island. I ate Prawn there by sitting in between the
sea and the lake, My mom and others ate Narial pani etc. important
thing is one more, the fish prawn was cooked on the wood fire"

4: returning with flight.
" Nice, cooperation, fun, comfort ETC are only the words to describe
the journey of my INDIGO flight"

Hope you all have enjoyed the reading.

[AI] Blind kids of Delhi's institute raped, no FIR

2014-11-10 Thread avinash shahi
In a brazen violation of the child protection act, the Institution for
the Blind in Amar Colony, Delhi, has seemingly hushed up the alleged
sexual assault of two of its Class 3 students by a teacher last year.
This is despite a signed confession by the alleged perpetrator and
reports of two school committees that indict him. The police too are
yet to file an FIR in connection with the case despite being called to
the institution's premises in connection with the assault soon after
the incident, and despite a complaint filed by school authorities nine
months later.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/blind-kids-raped-last-children-s-day-no-fir/article1-1283740.aspx

The teacher allegedly sodomised two visually impaired boys at the
school's premises last year on November 14 -- celebrated as Children's
Day in India. The boys are residents of the government-funded
institution's hostel.

Two days after the incident, the victims, along with their school
mates, wrote to the vice principal, who heads the institution,
informing him about the assault. A number of other children also
alleged that the teacher, who is also visually impaired, would molest
them regularly.

Though the vice principal called the police at the time, instead of
filing a complaint, he served the teacher with a show cause notice.
The police too did not investigate the matter further.

This is in clear violation of the Protection of Children from Sexual
Offences (POCSO) Act.

"As per the POCSO Act, any cases of sexual assault have to be reported
to the police and an FIR filed as soon as the complaint is received,"
said Arun Mathur, chairperson, Delhi Commission for the Protection of
Child Rights.

In his reply to the show cause notice, the accused accepted the
allegations and said he would not 'make the same mistake again'.
Despite the confession, the institution did not file a police
complaint.

That was not all. In July, the institution also moved to expel one of
the victims from the hostel when the vice principal wrote to the
warden, asking him to expel the child as he was a bad student and of
'bad character'.

School authorities only took the matter forward when the father of one
of the boys repeatedly wrote to them, urging them to act against the
alleged perpetrator. The father wrote a series of letters to the
school in July.

In August, the institution's office secretary finally sent a written
complaint to the SHO of the Amar Colony Police Station. HT has a copy
of the complaint. The school also finally set up two enquiries both of
which established the guilt of the teacher.

"Both committees categorically stated that the teacher should be
punished and removed from duty. The committee also criticised the vice
principal for reaching a 'compromise' with the police and hushing up
the matter. Still there is no action against either the vice principal
or the teacher," said a member of the internal enquiry committee.

HT has copies of the committee reports, the written communication
between the victims' parents and school, the show cause notice issued
to the teacher and his reply.

School authorities now claim they have filed a case against the
teacher. "We have lodged an FIR with the police and are cooperating
with them," said Sunil Khurana, president of the institution.

The police, however, deny this and add a curious twist.

A senior police officer told HT that no FIR has been filed as the
alleged victims denied they were sexually assaulted. "We recorded the
statements of the two blind students on three different dates in the
past year. The victims have maintained that they were not sexually
abused," said the officer.

Re: [AI] Meeting with Railway minister Sri.Sadanand Gowda

2014-11-10 Thread goutham agrawal
Dear Mr. Amjad Ahmed Fitwala,

I am thankful to you and all those friends who have express their
concern towards the self advocacy of the community for its
comprehensive development and appreciated and encouraged the move of
NFB Karnataka to this account.
My response to all suggestions /questions raised by fellow members is as under
1. As you all would be aware of the fact that the port folio of
hon’ble minister has been changed from railway to Law and justice. So
we shall have to see, how far this attempt will work? or we shall have
to restart it from square 1. However today morning, I checked with
local officer of hon’ble minister and found that the representation
has already been forwarded to the ministry.
2. Our meeting with railway minister was not pre scheduled. We only
came to know morning of 6th November that hon’ble minister is in
Bangalore and we tried to avail this opportunity to request his honor
to address various long standing problems faced by persons with
disability in travel by Railway in which we succeeded.
3. Except one, all the issues contained in this representation have
already been placed before the ministry from time to time by various
national or regional organizations representing the sector, including
the issue of extending concession in Tatkal tickets, extending the
concession in those trains in which at present it is not available,
withdrawal of restriction of having the escort for availment of
concession in the shatabdi and Rajadhani express, etc.

4. The only issue what we added to this, is concerning replacement of
term ``totally blind’’ in draft of concession certificate with blind
and for this also we have been receiving several requests from the
people of Karnataka region since long time.
5. So far the demand of concession in tatkal ticket is concerned,
whether the concession is available to any section of the society or
not, whether it may or may not be granted to us but I don’t see any
harm to ask for the same. But If still public opinion is not in favor
to demand this concession, it can be ignored at the stage of further
deliberations.
6. So far as the condition of travel with escort in Rajdhani and
shathabdi trains is concerned , as I have already mentioned that I
referred it not only in a representation submitted by some other NGO
some time back , but also referred a letter of railway ministry in
response to a quarry raised by AICB Delhi. This letter clearly
mentions that the concession in fare in Rajdhani and Shatabdhi Trains
is admissible only to those totally blind persons who cannot travel
without escort. But if it is clear that the concession in rajadhani
and shathabdhi trains is admissible to us even without escort too. So
this demand can also be skipped in further course of action.
7. As per the informations what have been brought to our notice so
far, Garibrat and torento are only trains in which the concession is
not available, if some more trains are there in which the concession
was not granted they may also be added.
8. As some of you have suggested some other steps to be taken
concerning accessible and barrier free platforms, availability of
wheelchairs at station and platforms, sensitization of railway staff,
auditory announcements in trains during the journey, etc, many of
these issues are already including in this representation and what
have been left out so they may be articulated as per the public
opinion expressed at various platforms and same may be taken up in
forth coming submission.
9. As a conclusion I would like to mentioned that this was neither a
final negotiation, nor any formal meeting to discuss and decide the
issues, but this was just an attempt to call the attention of the
hon’ble minister towards a wide range of problems faced by the persons
with disability in travel by railway and which have been repeatedly
raised with the ministry with no avail
10. Even in term of an intensive discussion we can work out and
compile more comprehensive representation and submit the same to the
concerned ministry through our representative organizations at all
levels when and where we get chance to do so.
With kind regards,
Gautam Agarwal
General Secretary

[AI] Tips for shortwave radio listening

2014-11-10 Thread hp.kotian
Hi

I guess, for some strange reason, this post failed to get to the list.
Hence, reposting it.
Harish Kotian

Hi

Our member was talking to me regarding radio purchase. This inspired
me to pen this down.

It should interest those who would want to listen to shortwave radio
and don't know how. It should also
Help those who are owning the Angel player.

The newer Angel pro and its variant do not have shortwave radio in it
and therefore, this tips shall not cover it.

To use the shortwave radio, you need to understand its nature and this
will help you search for stations.

Radio propagation: the radio signal ordinarily should reach us by line
of sight. This would therefore give a short area where the signal gets
picked. For it to travel long distance it travels up into the sky and
it gets reflected down by the ionosphere layer in our atmosphere.

The ionosphere layer is dense where the sun is. It is at the maximum
during the day and weakens in the evening and again builds up in the
morning.

Another factor to note is that higher the frequency greater is its
penetration power into the ionosphere.

To put this in a simple way, you will get better signals from long
distance on the higher frequency like the 25m and the 19m during the
day.
On the lower frequency i.e. 31 m and 40 m, you will get signals from
nearby places during the day and longer distances during evenings and
night.

Because the ionosphere layer keeps changing all the time the signals
are not consistent and you tend to hear in a wavy patterns at times.

How to improve reception:

1 desensitisation of the receiver. When you switch the shortwave band,
you will not find a single station. You feel frustrated the radio is
no good and you give up. The same problem is with the radio of Angel
player.

What you need to do then is to keep the radio tuned in a band where
you are more likely to pick up some station. You can take inputs from
the earlier Para for this. Let the radio be on, for a couple of hours
and try to look for stations after that. You will be pleasantly
surprised to hear various voices coming out of your radio which you
thought was dead.

Antennae are really an important component of your radio. The
telescopic antennae are not really good enough. You need to boost it a
bit. What you can do is to take a wire of about5-10m and preferably
extend it to your terrace. For any reason you cannot do that, at least
take it close to your window or balcony and leave it loose there. If
you are able to pick a crocodile clip, you can screw the metal of your
wire into the clip and thereafter use the clip to hold the antennae.
If you can't get one, Remove the rubber sleeve from the wire of about
an inch, and place the metal of the wire over the antennae.

If you can't do any of that, take your radio near the pillar of your
building. You are more likely to get a pillar where 2 walls meet.
Reception, on MW and SW improves near the pillar.

When you are buying a radio, look out for the following: Check if the
radio covers the entire shortwave spectrum. It should have good
selectivity and sensitivity. Regrettably in most cases, the vendor is
unable to help you on this as they are generally ignorant about it.

On the shortwave band look for the following bands in metres:
49,31,25,22,17,16 if you get these also it shall be wonderful 60,13,11

The daisy player has a digital radio. Although the software is not
optimised, I shall not ramble on it. Select the radio and keep
pressing the select button until you get the shortwave band of your
choice. Press the second key from left top until it toggles to auto.
Thereafter press the right cursor key. It will keep searching for a
station until it finds one. Keep pressing the same key for the next
station search. It can only move up the frequency and not a
decremental search. This is one of the limitations of the software
which I mentioned earlier. To add the channel to your favourite list:
press the select key on a long press. Similarly if you want to do an
automatic channel search you can press the right cursor key for a
longer time.
Up / down cursor cycles between the saved stations.

Noise- Florescent / CFL lamps, mobile chargers, computers make
spurious noise on the radio reception. Turn them off if possible.
Alternatively use battery instead, this brings down the noise. Try to
boost the signal by using external antennae.

Please note, these tips apply generally to the A.M radio and not the FM radio.

To summarise
1 If the radio is not in use for a considerable time, you need to keep
it simply on for a few hours to make it sensitive again.
2 Reception is better during the day on the higher frequency and the
lower frequency does great during evening until morning
3 Antennae can improve signal considerably.
Happy radio listening.

2014-11-10 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay
A blind person can travel with out escort in Shatabdi and Rajdhani
trains, therefore it should have been removed from the representation.
What we could demand that the concession in these trains should be
provided 50% in stead of merely 25%.
I am not in favour of any concession of tatkal ticket.

Re: [AI] HELP!!!

2014-11-10 Thread Deepak Singla
Hi
I suggest you to continue with the BTech as you have crossed almost
half the journey. As you are mentioning about the problems you are
facing in attending the classes, doing practicals and answering the
exams you can better approach your college authorities and detail
themn regarding your problem. It is only you who can do this job as
you only can convince them in this regard. Although there are many
Official documents providing facilities to visually impaired
candidates for pursuing their studies but first you yourself have to
be convinced that you can do it as it is very important for you in
such a situation.

I am also a patient of RP and when I got admission into BTech I also
met with this situation but I continued to complete the course and
with the Grace of God I completed my BTech and thereafter I completed
MBA. But I personally approached the authorities whenever I was in
trouble just as you are in while sitting for your exams. So first
don't let your confidence down and keep your morale high and struggle
against the challenge.

Re: [AI] HELP!!!

2014-11-10 Thread vishal M
HI Sajal,

Better do B.tech in IT than Bsc.IT

If you had completed the first year in B.tech Electrical, you could had
requested ypur college to change your stream to IT. If possible, you can
approach your college again.

MSc IT or MCA is equivalent to B.tech.

Vishal
