Subject: [AI] The story of visually impaired diplomat from Pakistan - Saima
Saleem

Got this from another list.

Saima Saleem- serving in Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva

This will give many of you immense inspiration and motivation. I sincerely
hope that after reading this, many of us understand that most of the
limitations we think of might just be in our mind. Saima is a beacon of
hope. She has turned all odds presented to her and time and again has proven
that no matter what 'cards' are dealt to you, you are in control of your own
destiny. My weak effort to her beautiful journey is merely just an attempt
to highlight different facets of how she bravely faced adversity.

Some people in the world are bestowed with the 'vision' and change course
their own history. I happen to come across Saima, and was driven to this
conclusion that she happens to be one of them. In 2008, she became the first
blind diplomat of Pakistan. Yes, you guys read that right. Read on, it
happens to be an amazing story and I found myself dumbfounded.

Due to a genetic disease (Retinitis Pigmentosa), Saima lost her sight in her
teenage. Here, where millions of people with special abilities are treated
as social outcastes, face all forms of discrimination, are denied
fundamental human rights, including, among others, right to education and
employment, this ambassador of hope decided to turn every stumbling-block
into a stepping- stone. Negative social attitudes, lack of resources, never
changing rules and policies and many such obstacles could not match Saima's
unflinching resolve to do something extraordinary in life and change the
perception of our society regarding persons with special abilities.

Saima rose like a phoenix. She was the most outstanding student of her
school. Due to her academic excellence, she was given a gold medal in
Bachelors and Master by Kinnaird College University for Women. For the first
time in Pakistan, all her exams were conducted in Braille because she fought
for her rights and refused to appear in exams with the help of a writer who
could mar her future due to negligence and lack of capacity. After her
Masters, she decided to appear in the CSS exams with the resolve to become
the first blind Civil Servant of Pakistan.

At first, FPSC refused to conduct her exam because she requested for a
computer-based exam which had never been conducted in Pakistan. Through a
divine intervention and her relentless pursuits, her wish was granted and
President of Pakistan ordered FPSC to conduct a computer-based exam. It is
pertinent to mention that she uses Screen-Reader software (JAWS) for working
independently on the computer and software for scanning the books and other
material for reading.

The leader got sixth position in the country and first among female
candidates. Through an ordinance, FPSC had only allowed disabled candidates
to choose only four occupational groups-Accounts, Commerce, Information and
Postal. Once again, Saima refused to accept this discriminatory treatment
and chose Foreign Service for she had always wanted to become a diplomat and
represent Pakistan. Rules had to face a defeat in front of her indomitable
resolve and the Prime Minister of Pakistan allowed her to join Foreign
Service on merit. After joining Foreign Service, she topped all trainings
and exams and was given another Gold Medal by Foreign Service Academy. In
addition, she won a Fulbright Scholarship and went to study at the
prestigious School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University USA. Upon
joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, due to her passion to improve human
rights in the country, she developed expertise in human rights and had been
working on human rights issues from the last five years.

Saima is currently serving in Pakistan's Permanent Mission to the United
Nations in Geneva (Switzerland) and is working on human rights issues. It is
a matter of great pride for the nation that Pakistan is represented by an
outstanding young diplomat who has fought incessantly for human rights and
has overcome all challenges. Her charismatic personality and stunning
achievements have given a big boost to the soft image of the country. What
an awesome future prospect for our country that Helen Keller of the 21st
century is the face of Pakistan!

2015-02-17 Thread Kotian, H P
Hi Arvind

Well, not me. I have tried to trim occasionally using a comb for reference to
trim the bit to ensure, the moustache does not get into the mouth.

I get it done when I go for a hair cut. Moustache does not grow all that
rapidly. Usually, I get it trimmed by a family member.

Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other models,
you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down early.
You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good tork.
You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and I had
got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting
used to.

I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a trimmer.
I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to the
traditional rasors.

Hi
I have been using electric shaver for at least 30 years. It has not made
any

adverse effect on my skin at all or made the beard denser.

I have used a few of them and found Phillips ones better than the rest. I
have been shaving alternative days and the pattern has stayed for many
years

this way.

You get them in 2 head and 3 head. It does not matter at all. Similarly,
you

get direct drive that is it runs direct from power source and others run
from rechargeable batteries or disposal batteries. All of these
combinations

run fine.

I last bought a Phillips shaver a year back. It runs on battery and does
not
come with charger. It is a twin head one and I got it from Snapdeal for
Rs.

1,111. There was some offer running then and its list price was around
1,900. The battery arrangement was non standard and I was almost going to
return it and checked the battery position on the manual. Other than that
I

did not find it difficult at all. In fact this model is small in size,
Easier to clean it up. I don't have the model number readily now.

Even if you were to shave weekly, you can still do so on the electric
shaver

as well.

The electrical shaver are rugged and requires no maintaince except the
cleaning up. This too, we can do it ourselves.

Let me add, I do use the conventional rasors occasionally. Therefore, both
the
conventional rasor and the electric shaver are safe to use and it is only
a

matter of preference.

Hi,

I second that. I've had a similar experience with Philips Norelco electric
shaver.

Best,

On 2/16/15, Kiran Kaja wrote:

Absolutely. I started using an electric shaver about 4 years ago and
find is much easier to use rather than a traditional razor. I use a
Philips AquaTouch shaver. It is a wet and dry shaver but I only really
ever do a dry shave. It has a rechargeable battery which lasts for
about 10 shaves. Also easy to clean. Just put it under a running tap
to clean it.

There is an advantage for dry shave. It is much easier to check if you
have missed any stubble and use the shaver again.

Hope this helps.

Re: [AI] need information about reading statistics

2015-02-17 Thread Siddhi Desai
Dear Rekha,
I too, tried downloading the PDF files for Economics. However, the
quality of the books in terms of consistency in using different
symbols is not so good.

There is a software called infty reader which may help you in getting
equations converted but I am not quite sure about their performance in
the IGNOU file conversion due to poor quality. as a result, their
extent of usefulness would be limited. But you could try.

The important part about Economics graphs is that they are mainly
visual representation of the economic concept and therefore, they are
not drawn to measure.

I would suggest contacting NGOs in your area to record the required
part or type down the explanation of the graph and equations
somewhere. I used to listen to youtube videos and search online to
understand the concepts and then ask someone to explain graphs to me.

I have some Economics books but they are not the IGNOU PDf files. Let
me know if you want them. Email me the topics.

Sorry there is no direct solution as per my knowledge.

If someone else can contribute in providing the solution then it would
be a lot helpful!
Sincerely
Siddhi

[AI] Partially blind youngster breaks new ground

2015-02-17 Thread Vishnu Ramchandani
CHENNAI: In the relatively quiet 'news monitoring' corner of the 3-month old
Tamil TV channel, News 7, sits a young man absorbed in the screen before him.
Ears enclosed by a pair of stereo Sennheiser earphones, 22-year-old Arun Bose
monitors Sun TV, marking an hourly update of the channel's newscast on an Excel
sheet. Ask him what's trending today and he says Sri Lankan's president
Maithripala Sirisena's Delhi visit and the fuel price rise. Four other young
men sit around Bose, monitoring the news, but while they have their eyes glued
to their screens, Bose has his ears tuned in, for he is partially blind.

About two months ago, Bose was recommended for the job of news monitor by
Karna Vidhya Technology Centre (KVTC), a training-cum placement institute at
Guindy that teaches visually challenged persons to work with computers and
internet technology to improve their career prospects. Having mastered office
automation there, he interviewed with News 7 and copped the job, working an
8-hour shift there.

Bose, a graduate of Malayalam Literature, from Kerala, has lived in Chennai
for a year is pleased with this, his first career break. At the News 7 office,
amid the high-decibel whirr of TV cameras and crackling airwaves Bose and his
four colleagues are tasked with monitoring three Tamil news channels outside
their own: Sun TV, Thanthi TV and Puthiya Thalaimurai. "I have to check for
breaking news, frequency of repeats, number of exclusives and special stories,"
says Bose, who relies on the screen reading software JAWS to file his reports.

His boss, editor-in-chief Rajesh Sundaram, says Bose stands for the kind of
inclusive workspace the young News 7 wishes to build. "Bose is on par with his
colleagues, and we've made no special concessions for him," says Sundaram, who
plans to continue hiring persons with disabilities.

Once he clocks out, Bose, who lives in a mansion at Choolaimedu, says he
usually returns to his room to surf the internet and listen to music. Only two
months into the job he says he hasn't yet decided if he wants to make his
future in media. "Perhaps banking because it's secure," says Bose, drawing
attention to the narrow expectations both the visually impaired and recruiters
have come to form about career choices.

K Raghuraman, professor of English Literature at Government Arts and Science
College, Nandanam, and coordinator at KVTC says he isn't aware of another
visually challenged person hired at a TV channel in Tamil Nadu. "We want to
prove that almost every sector can accommodate the visually impaired provided
their workspaces are accessible," he says, "We want to step beyond the
traditional sectors of employment for the blind, like teaching and banking, and
want to break new ground in IT and the media." Surrounded by breaking news in
the newsroom and helping track it, Bose, knowingly or not, is doing just that.

Does someone have good tutorial for learning IBM Symphony with Jaws?
I have to use advanced features like mail merge in document, V look up

Re: [AI] regarding telugu pdf reading

2015-02-17 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
such converter are language specific.
each language must have its own converter.
Since I am non-Indian language speaker, I have no idea about Indian languages.
However, in case of my own language, I myself had made such tool and
my language speaker have no problem in this regard.
To develop such tool, some local programer must take an initiative.
Try to search in Google; Though I do not know, it may be available.

 Hi,
 Him Prasad Sir,
If a PDF file is inaccessible due to use of non-Unicode font, then
would conversion of the PDF file into an alternative format, such as
.txt, be a solution, would conversion into an alternative format
change the non-Unicode font to Unicode font?
For reading Telugu, or about any other language in the world you can
use the Espeak speech synthesizer - espeak.sourceforge.net
You can use NVDA, which uses ESpeak as its default text to speech
 engine.

Re: [AI] regarding telugu pdf reading

2015-02-17 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
Be clear:
1. pdf or txt or doc or any other is a format of the file.
By converting the format of one file to another format file does not
change the encoding of font.
One has to convert the non-unicode text to unicode text which can b
done by any of the following method.
a. Either someone has to completely type the text in Unicode font by
seeing/reading the non-Unicode texts.
b. If available ( i do not know whether it is available for Telugu or
not) , one can use any non-Unicode to Unicode text converter tools.
2. There is no more option of converting non-Unicode text to Unicode
except the above two ways.
3. whatever the language of this Indian continent; any file of any
format if written in non-Unicode font is inaccessible.
Basically the files are accessible but the reading is meaningless.
There is a speech out but we can not understand what is written
there.
Conclusion:
if the inaccessibility prevails, it can be due to two reason.
1. by inappropriate format of the file. Its solution is the conversion
of format of the file.
2. Use of non-Unicode texts. Its solution is to convert it to Unicode
encoded texts.

Dear friends,

I have been reading about difficulties of our friends in issuance of I-card

succeeded in finding it on net. It appears to me that people in DRM office
are deliberately troubling persons with disabilities. Therefore, I have
decided to paste below the circular so that these people will not be able to
harass any more. If all of you agree, we can fix up a date and all of us can
reach there for our identity cards. In case, you people decide to join

circular is pasted below:

Yes, the kits are being provided only to those students who have not

(Malini Chib works with TCS in London and is a free-lance writer) One can be
patriotic even when you are abroad, even if your own country rejects you
because you are disabled. I am a proud Indian, but since the age of 1, I
have been in and out of London to lead a normal life.

I am 48 ; I have Cerebral Palsy . Yes, I am privileged to be able to shift
countries - in that way, I am luckier than so many people with special
needs. But I still feeI the alienation and isolation of having to move from
a country where all basic services and systems excluded me.

Being in a wheelchair in India leaves me trapped. I can never go out into
the street for a "walk", to buy stuff in Mumbai, the city where I grew up. I
love Mumbai, but I am made invisible because of this exclusion.

I have two Masters degrees, both from London, where it was easy for me to
get admission. I began my professional life late -at the age of 32. I now
work at TCS as a Diversity Consultant .

In India, for nearly four years, I did part-time jobs and could not develop
a career. These jobs were considered 'work-experience' - a kind of testing
of my skills that others were not required to endure. After having a degree
and a post-graduate diploma in Publishing from the Polytechnic in Oxford, I
joined a magazine called Technocrat in Mumbai. I was treated just like any
other employee -so I was pulled up for taking too long for a piece, but it
was fun and I appreciated the honesty shown to me, as also the challenge.

However, it was inaccessible because the office was located in Nariman
Point. As I approached the building, stairs confronted me. There was no
elevator to reach the 9th where the office was located. My wheelchair had to
be carried up by two or three people. I had to be helped onto the
wheelchair. My carer had to come at lunch time to help me because the
canteen where people usually ate and socialized was not accessible for me.
So although it was great to be working with normal people, it still remained
degrading and there was a loss of dignity in needing to be lifted up the
stairs due to an inaccessible environment. So although the work environment
was conducive and inclusive to me and the attitudes was par excellence, the
inaccessibility wore me down.

I left for London in 1993 as my mother got invited to London School as an
academic visitor. The slogan for disabled people that I saw everywhere was
"Rights and not Charity." Disabled people were seen everywhere. It was an
age where disabled people's voices were being heard. "Nothing about us
without us" was the chant of the day. After meeting a few disabled people, I
realized I needed to be more empowered. My speech was the biggest hindrance.
Other disabled people who had poorer speech were getting heard as they were
using voice synthesizers. Friends started saying that I needed to
communicate on my own. At that time I didn't realise how vital it was to
communicate without needing a third party. I was assessed and got myself a
Toby Churchill light writer.

What was terrific and euphoric for that for the first time in my 25 years, I
could go where I wanted on my own. The London Buses became accessible - a
ramp comes out and I hop on without much ado. I felt unchained, free as a
bird.

Then circumstances were such that I needed to move back to India. I couldn't
waste away in a corner and sit at home. I wanted a job like my non-disabled
peers.

I then did a two month 'work experience with Malvika Sangvi with Bombay
Times. Of course the Times building did not have a ramp. I felt again
embarrassed because everybody in the office knew when I wanted to go to the
toilet because my helper would come and assist me. Once, on my first day, I
slipped in the toilet and got cut badly.

Then I managed to get a job at Oxford bookshop in Bombay as Senior Events
Manager. They respected my qualifications and I was told to build up a data
base and increase the footfalls. I did that .The bookshop's office was so
small that my wheelchair took up most of the space. There was one toilet,
but it was not something I could access. Besides being unclean, one can
count on one's fingers how many disabled toilets are there in Mumbai. I
always need a car and driver to take me to the nearest one.

Whereas in Britain all public places and transport are accessible. Since I
am entitled to work in London, I got a job in London at TCS. From my flat in
Pimlico, my wheelchair meanders across rush hour to work regardless of
crowds. I work in the HR Department with the Diversity and Incl

[AI] The story of visually impaired diplomat from Pakistan - Saima Saleem

2015-02-17 Thread Prashant Verma

India has made some progress on this front -I see changes in wheel-chair
friendly toilets at airports and five-star hotels.

If we disabled people are to be a part of society and life, we as a nation have
to be more responsible to ensure that every public place has to have a disabled
loo.

It is good to know that now universities are taking steps to make
environment more accessible. But my concern is that Delhi University
earlier distributed laptops among visually challenged students and now
it is going to distribute DAISY players. Is there any need to give
DAISY players while all visually challenged students have laptops?
Certainly, it is wastage of money.

And if my guess is spot on; many blind students enrolled at DU have
already availed the kit through Saksham and NIVH. It would be better
and prudent if DU administration makes kit available to those who are
not covered yet.

Re: [AI] DU smart canes for 'special' students

2015-02-17 Thread Sanchit Katiyar
It is good to know that now universities are taking steps to make
environment more accessible. But my concern is that Delhi University
earlier distributed laptops among visually challenged students and now
it is going to distribute DAISY players. Is there any need to give
DAISY players while all visually challenged students have laptops?
Certainly, it is wastage of money.

Re: [AI] equal access to information for all Investors

2015-02-17 Thread Amar Jain
>From listed companies' point of view, to the best of my knowledge and
reading, for the first time SEBI has said that the obligation in
relation to availability of information in public domain is that it
should be accessible to the public in non-discriminatory basis.

This is said in the context of insider trading, I.e. this definition
helps in determine what may amount to insider trading under the new
Prohibition of Insider Trading Regulations 2015.

All other laws and regulations issued by SEBI and framework of
stock-exchanges seek to regulate how and at what stage the disclosures
are to be made. I get what you are intending at, but in the current
framework of laws (at least from the commercial side of laws), I don't
think that this route is possible to get the desired information.
Unless some disability law expert has a contrary opinion on it.

Access to information from investors prospective has remained a huge
challenge and even from our work prospective it continues to be a
challenge.

If you think it to be a wise step, then please drop an email to SEBI Chairman
asking for a regulatory step in this direction based on financial
inclusion philosophy.
And please mark me a copy on amarj...@amarjain.com

When SEBI can prescribe dress code in their regulations, then why
cannot a circular be issued to standardize the information in a
specified format which is put out in a public domain!

Hope that brings some clarity.

Regards,

Subject: [AI] DU smart canes for 'special' students

http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/jnu-proposes-ac-bus-du-smart-
canes-for-special-students/
University spaces may soon become a little more disabled-friendly,
with varsities taking steps to ease mobility for special-needs
students. While Jawaharlal University (JNU) will soon be running an
air-conditioned bus for students to travel within its premises, Delhi
University (DU) is set to provide "mobility and accessibility kits" to
help visually-impaired students.

"JNU has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bharat Heavy
Electricals Limited (BHEL) for the AC bus. This will benefit around
300 differently-abled students living on campus," JNU spokesperson
Poonam Kudesia told Newsline.

For the project, BHEL will provide financial aid of Rs 30.35 lakh to
the university.

The agreement comes in the wake of concerns raised by a group of
differently-abled students, who had demanded that infrastructural
projects to make the campus barrier-free be expedited.

In DU, visually-challenged students will soon be getting "mobility and
accessibility" kits, including DAISY players, to help them move around
with ease. DAISY players are essentially book-reading machines.

While the canes will give vibration warnings to students whenever
there is any obstruction within a certain range, the DAISY player will
help them to comfortably access and go through books.

"DU has joined hands with the Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment to provide mobility and accessibility kits to
visually-challenged students. The kit, comprising of smart canes and
DAISY players will help students move around the campus," Dr Bipin
Kumar Tiwari, from DU's Equal Opportunity Cell, said.

DU has also tied up with the National Institute for the Visually
Handicapped (NIVH), Dehradun, to work on the kits. The cost of each
kit is estimated to be around Rs 11,000.

"While funds for the initiative have been provided by the ministry,
the contents of the kit have been developed by NIVH," Tiwari said.

Officials said the kits will be given out to around 200 students
during Antardhwani, DU's annual college fest

[AI] DU smart canes for 'special' students

2015-02-17 Thread avinash shahi
http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/delhi/jnu-proposes-ac-bus-du-smart-canes-for-special-students/

Re: [AI] Electric shaver for men

2015-02-17 Thread harish

Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other
models, you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service
station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down
early.

You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good
tork. You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and
I had got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting
used to.

I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a
trimmer. I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to
the traditional rasors.

Harish.

Hi,

I second that. I've had a similar experience with Philips Norelco electric

There is an advantage for dry shave. It is much easier to check if you

So I was wondering if anyone could throw more light on this.

Re: [AI] equal access to information for all Investors

2015-02-17 Thread Dinesh Kaushal
My thinking is that provisions relevant for investors are easily
enforceable, and if there is a provision for listed companies to provide
equal access to information for all investors, then asking for accessible
information for persons with disabilities would be straightforward.

Many companies do not have accessible information on their investor pages.

Though I am unable to understand the essence of your question,
nevertheless I don't think such rule exists anywhere which binds a
company to provide the information in accessible format. One thing is
not clear in your message, whether the company u are talking about, is
a private company or a public undertaking? If it is public one, u may
have required info refering to regulations/guidelines to this effect
to provide the information in accessible format. But be mindful of
this fact, no law or guideline etc. mandate in unequivocal terms that
the information shall be provided in accessible format for persons
with special needs.
Though RTI Act 2005 may have some provisions to this effect, but not
directly.

George sir,

How do you intend to collect this information? I guess filing RTIs
with the employment exchanges of the respective states will give you
some indicative figures. But I really doubt whether anyone can have
the actual figures as you wish.

Hey Kiran, May I know, which model r u using? what do u mean that its
battery lasts for 10 shaves? the average time taken for a shave is
usually 10 - 15 minutes, it mean its battery backup is near about 150
minutes? What if your beard is too hard?
