Saima Saleem- serving in Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva This will give many of you immense inspiration and motivation. I sincerely hope that after reading this, many of us understand that most of the limitations we think of might just be in our mind. Saima is a beacon of hope. She has turned all odds presented to her and time and again has proven that no matter what 'cards' are dealt to you, you are in control of your own destiny. My weak effort to her beautiful journey is merely just an attempt to highlight different facets of how she bravely faced adversity. Some people in the world are bestowed with the 'vision' and change course their own history. I happen to come across Saima, and was driven to this conclusion that she happens to be one of them. In 2008, she became the first blind diplomat of Pakistan. Yes, you guys read that right. Read on, it happens to be an amazing story and I found myself dumbfounded. Due to a genetic disease (Retinitis Pigmentosa), Saima lost her sight in her teenage. Here, where millions of people with special abilities are treated as social outcastes, face all forms of discrimination, are denied fundamental human rights, including, among others, right to education and employment, this ambassador of hope decided to turn every stumbling-block into a stepping- stone. Negative social attitudes, lack of resources, never changing rules and policies and many such obstacles could not match Saima's unflinching resolve to do something extraordinary in life and change the perception of our society regarding persons with special abilities. Saima rose like a phoenix. She was the most outstanding student of her school. Due to her academic excellence, she was given a gold medal in Bachelors and Master by Kinnaird College University for Women. For the first time in Pakistan, all her exams were conducted in Braille because she fought for her rights and refused to appear in exams with the help of a writer who could mar her future due to negligence and lack of capacity. After her Masters, she decided to appear in the CSS exams with the resolve to become the first blind Civil Servant of Pakistan. At first, FPSC refused to conduct her exam because she requested for a computer-based exam which had never been conducted in Pakistan. Through a divine intervention and her relentless pursuits, her wish was granted and President of Pakistan ordered FPSC to conduct a computer-based exam. It is pertinent to mention that she uses Screen-Reader software (JAWS) for working independently on the computer and software for scanning the books and other material for reading. The leader got sixth position in the country and first among female candidates. Through an ordinance, FPSC had only allowed disabled candidates to choose only four occupational groups-Accounts, Commerce, Information and Postal. Once again, Saima refused to accept this discriminatory treatment and chose Foreign Service for she had always wanted to become a diplomat and represent Pakistan. Rules had to face a defeat in front of her indomitable resolve and the Prime Minister of Pakistan allowed her to join Foreign Service on merit. After joining Foreign Service, she topped all trainings and exams and was given another Gold Medal by Foreign Service Academy. In addition, she won a Fulbright Scholarship and went to study at the prestigious School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University USA. Upon joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, due to her passion to improve human rights in the country, she developed expertise in human rights and had been working on human rights issues from the last five years. Saima is currently serving in Pakistan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland) and is working on human rights issues. It is a matter of great pride for the nation that Pakistan is represented by an outstanding young diplomat who has fought incessantly for human rights and has overcome all challenges. Her charismatic personality and stunning achievements have given a big boost to the soft image of the country. What an awesome future prospect for our country that Helen Keller of the 21st century is the face of Pakistan! Hi Arvind Well, not me. I have tried to trim occasionally using a comb for reference to trim the bit to ensure, the moustache does not get into the mouth. I get it done when I go for a hair cut. Moustache does not grow all that rapidly. Usually, I get it trimmed by a family member. Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a result you cannot swap parts if you have other models. If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down early. You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good tork. You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and I had got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now. The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting used to. I would recommend this model. This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a trimmer. Re: [AI] need information about reading statistics
Dear Rekha, I too, tried downloading the PDF files for Economics. However, the quality of the books in terms of consistency in using different symbols is not so good. There is a software called infty reader which may help you in getting equations converted but I am not quite sure about their performance in the IGNOU file conversion due to poor quality. as a result, their extent of usefulness would be limited. But you could try. The important part about Economics graphs is that they are mainly visual representation of the economic concept and therefore, they are not drawn to measure. I would suggest contacting NGOs in your area to record the required part or type down the explanation of the graph and equations somewhere. I used to listen to youtube videos and search online to understand the concepts and then ask someone to explain graphs to me. I have some Economics books but they are not the IGNOU PDf files. Let me know if you want them. Email me the topics. Sorry there is no direct solution as per my knowledge. If someone else can contribute in providing the solution then it would be a lot helpful! [AI] Partially blind youngster breaks new ground
CHENNAI: In the relatively quiet 'news monitoring' corner of the 3-month old Tamil TV channel, News 7, sits a young man absorbed in the screen before him. Ears enclosed by a pair of stereo Sennheiser earphones, 22-year-old Arun Bose monitors Sun TV, marking an hourly update of the channel's newscast on an Excel sheet. Ask him what's trending today and he says Sri Lankan's president Maithripala Sirisena's Delhi visit and the fuel price rise. Four other young men sit around Bose, monitoring the news, but while they have their eyes glued to their screens, Bose has his ears tuned in, for he is partially blind. About two months ago, Bose was recommended for the job of news monitor by Karna Vidhya Technology Centre (KVTC), a training-cum placement institute at Guindy that teaches visually challenged persons to work with computers and internet technology to improve their career prospects. Having mastered office automation there, he interviewed with News 7 and copped the job, working an 8-hour shift there. Bose, a graduate of Malayalam Literature, from Kerala, has lived in Chennai for a year is pleased with this, his first career break. At the News 7 office, amid the high-decibel whirr of TV cameras and crackling airwaves Bose and his four colleagues are tasked with monitoring three Tamil news channels outside their own: Sun TV, Thanthi TV and Puthiya Thalaimurai. "I have to check for breaking news, frequency of repeats, number of exclusives and special stories," says Bose, who relies on the screen reading software JAWS to file his reports. His boss, editor-in-chief Rajesh Sundaram, says Bose stands for the kind of inclusive workspace the young News 7 wishes to build. "Bose is on par with his colleagues, and we've made no special concessions for him," says Sundaram, who plans to continue hiring persons with disabilities. Once he clocks out, Bose, who lives in a mansion at Choolaimedu, says he usually returns to his room to surf the internet and listen to music. Only two months into the job he says he hasn't yet decided if he wants to make his future in media. "Perhaps banking because it's secure," says Bose, drawing attention to the narrow expectations both the visually impaired and recruiters have come to form about career choices. K Raghuraman, professor of English Literature at Government Arts and Science College, Nandanam, and coordinator at KVTC says he isn't aware of another visually challenged person hired at a TV channel in Tamil Nadu. "We want to prove that almost every sector can accommodate the visually impaired provided their workspaces are accessible," he says, "We want to step beyond the traditional sectors of employment for the blind, like teaching and banking, and want to break new ground in IT and the media." Surrounded by breaking news in the newsroom and helping track it, Bose, knowingly or not, is doing just that. Re: [AI] regarding telugu pdf reading
hi, Be clear: 1. pdf or txt or doc or any other is a format of the file. By converting the format of one file to another format file does not change the encoding of font. One has to convert the non-unicode text to unicode text which can b done by any of the following method. a. Either someone has to completely type the text in Unicode font by seeing/reading the non-Unicode texts. b. If available ( i do not know whether it is available for Telugu or not) , one can use any non-Unicode to Unicode text converter tools. 2. There is no more option of converting non-Unicode text to Unicode except the above two ways. 3. whatever the language of this Indian continent; any file of any format if written in non-Unicode font is inaccessible. Basically the files are accessible but the reading is meaningless. There is a speech out but we can not understand what is written there. Conclusion: if the inaccessibility prevails, it can be due to two reason. 1. by inappropriate format of the file. Its solution is the conversion of format of the file. 2. Use of non-Unicode texts. Its solution is to convert it to Unicode encoded texts. [AI] Circular of documents required for railways identity card for e-ticketing
Dear friends, I have been reading about difficulties of our friends in issuance of I-card by DRM of Northern Railways. I have been trying to find a circular and I succeeded in finding it on net. It appears to me that people in DRM office are deliberately troubling persons with disabilities. Therefore, I have decided to paste below the circular so that these people will not be able to harass any more. If all of you agree, we can fix up a date and all of us can reach there for our identity cards. In case, you people decide to join together, let me know and I will join you. My mobile No. is: 986124. The circular is pasted below: News Feed Ministry of Railways - India December 12, 2014 * RAILWAY EXTENDS E-TICKETING FACILITY FOR BOOKING OF RAIL TICKETS TO DIFFERENTLY - ABLED PERSONS In order to afford greater convenience in the booking of rail tickets, the Indian Railways has extended the e-ticketing facility to Physically Challenged persons i.e. Orthopaedically handicapped/ Hearing & Speech impaired persons/Mentally Challenged/ Vision Challenged passengers. Such persons desirous of availing e-ticketing facility are requested to submit their original handicapped medical certificate along with two copies of recent passport size photographs, photo-identity proof and proof of Date of Birth in the Commercial Branch of nearest Divisional Railway Manager's Office. After due verification of the certificate/documents, such persons will be issued Photo-identity card through which facilities of e-ticketing can be availed for booking of rail tickets. Re: [AI] The story of visually impaired diplomat from Pakistan - Saima Saleem
Good one. Thank you -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Prashant Verma Sent: Tuesday, February 17, 2015 5:54 PM To: Accessindia Subject: [AI] The story of visually impaired diplomat from Pakistan - Saima Saleem Got this from another list. Yes, the kits are being provided only to those students who have not filled either the NIVH or the Saksham form. Also, dog menace is even in du. I narrowly avoided getting bitten once. I am a proud Indian, but since the age of 1, I have been in and out of London to lead a normal life. I am 48 ; I have Cerebral Palsy . Yes, I am privileged to be able to shift countries - in that way, I am luckier than so many people with special needs. But I still feeI the alienation and isolation of having to move from a country where all basic services and systems excluded me. Being in a wheelchair in India leaves me trapped. I can never go out into the street for a "walk", to buy stuff in Mumbai, the city where I grew up. I love Mumbai, but I am made invisible because of this exclusion. I have two Masters degrees, both from London, where it was easy for me to get admission. I began my professional life late -at the age of 32. I now work at TCS as a Diversity Consultant . In India, for nearly four years, I did part-time jobs and could not develop a career. These jobs were considered 'work-experience' - a kind of testing of my skills that others were not required to endure. After having a degree and a post-graduate diploma in Publishing from the Polytechnic in Oxford, I joined a magazine called Technocrat in Mumbai. I was treated just like any other employee -so I was pulled up for taking too long for a piece, but it was fun and I appreciated the honesty shown to me, as also the challenge. However, it was inaccessible because the office was located in Nariman Point. As I approached the building, stairs confronted me. There was no elevator to reach the 9th where the office was located. My wheelchair had to be carried up by two or three people. I had to be helped onto the wheelchair. My carer had to come at lunch time to help me because the canteen where people usually ate and socialized was not accessible for me. So although it was great to be working with normal people, it still remained degrading and there was a loss of dignity in needing to be lifted up the stairs due to an inaccessible environment. So although the work environment was conducive and inclusive to me and the attitudes was par excellence, the inaccessibility wore me down. Re: [AI] DU smart canes for 'special' students
And if my guess is spot on; many blind students enrolled at DU have already availed the kit through Saksham and NIVH. It would be better and prudent if DU administration makes kit available to those who are not covered yet. Re: [AI] equal access to information for all Investors
>From listed companies' point of view, to the best of my knowledge and reading, for the first time SEBI has said that the obligation in relation to availability of information in public domain is that it should be accessible to the public in non-discriminatory basis. This is said in the context of insider trading, I.e. this definition helps in determine what may amount to insider trading under the new Prohibition of Insider Trading Regulations 2015. All other laws and regulations issued by SEBI and framework of stock-exchanges seek to regulate how and at what stage the disclosures are to be made. I get what you are intending at, but in the current framework of laws (at least from the commercial side of laws), I don't think that this route is possible to get the desired information. Unless some disability law expert has a contrary opinion on it. Access to information from investors prospective has remained a huge challenge and even from our work prospective it continues to be a challenge. If you think it to be a wise step, then please drop an email to SEBI Chairman asking for a regulatory step in this direction based on financial inclusion philosophy. And please mark me a copy on amarj...@amarjain.com When SEBI can prescribe dress code in their regulations, then why cannot a circular be issued to standardize the information in a specified format which is put out in a public domain! Hope that brings some clarity. Regards, -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] Electric shaver for men
Hi Vikas, Vamshi As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other expenditure really. On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other models, you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service station. I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to the traditional rasors. It has not made any adverse effect on my skin at all or made the beard denser. I have used a few of them and found Phillips ones better than the rest. I have been shaving alternative days and the pattern has stayed for many years this way. You get them in 2 head and 3 head. It does not matter at all. Similarly, you get direct drive that is it runs direct from power source and others run from rechargeable batteries or disposal batteries. All of these combinations run fine. I last bought a Phillips shaver a year back. It runs on battery and does not come with charger. It is a twin head one and I got it from Snapdeal for Rs. 1,111. There was some offer running then and its list price was around 1,900. The battery arrangement was non standard and I was almost going to return it and checked the battery position on the manual. Other than that I did not find it difficult at all. In fact this model is small in size, Easier to clean it up. I don't have the model number readily now. Even if you were to shave weekly, you can still do so on the electric shaver as well. The electrical shaver are rugged and requires no maintaince except the cleaning up. This too, we can do it ourselves. Let me add, I do use the conventional rasors occasionally. Therefore, both the conventional rasor and the electric shaver are safe to use and it is only a matter of preference. Re: [AI] equal access to information for all Investors
My thinking is that provisions relevant for investors are easily enforceable, and if there is a provision for listed companies to provide equal access to information for all investors, then asking for accessible information for persons with disabilities would be straightforward.
