Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other
models, you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service
station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down
early.
You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good
tork. You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and
I had got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting
used to.

I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a
trimmer. I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to
the traditional rasors.

[AI] The Indelible Class Identity: Ethnographic Examination of a School

2015-02-19 Thread avinash shahi
An article which truly is an eye-opener
Unfortunately, We have a dearth of Such seminal ethnographic account
in the disability studies.

http://www.epw.in/insight/indelible-class-identity.html

How regular schooling unfolds for children should be an important
concern in the light of the Right to Education Act, 2009 that makes
schooling not just free, but also compulsory. While getting children
to school is a central pillar of the state's mandate of promoting
social justice and enabling improved opportunities and life-chances
for all, the empirical data presented in this article shows how
children, identified by their social milieu and even humiliated on
that count, can be constrained within the processes and the ethos of
learning.

Jyoti Dalal (jyoti@gmail.com) teaches at the Institute of Home
Economics, University of Delhi.

 The
central premise of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF)
2005 rightfully asserts that the school should give primary
importance to the individual or learner identity of children.
However, as this article demonstrates, in the everyday life of a
school it is the class identity of the children that determines how
schooling shapes up for them.1 After providing the larger
backdrop of the study, the article reflects on the everyday
interactions that I observed in the school concerned. I found these
interactions demeaning in nature as teachers, non-governmental
 organisation (NGO)
volunteers and the headmaster openly identify and stereotype children
on the basis of their home lives and the larger milieu in which they
 live.

Methodology
 and Setting

 This
article emerges from an ethnographic study of a state-run primary
school, situated in a lower-class socio-economic neighbourhood named
Mandolla,2 in Delhi. In the course of the research, I used
a number of methods but the main staple of my findings emerged from
the ethnographic techniques of observation and interviews. The
examined school has one headmaster, seven women teachers, three male
teachers and six volunteers from two recognised NGOs.
I call them official adults as they are responsible for the
pedagogic, disciplinary and bureaucratic functions of the school.
They have official permission to be present in the school and can be
distinguished from the informal adults who at times are seen in the
schooling space without any formal permission or official purpose.
These informal adults are parents, the students' relatives,
other adults from the neighbourhood and the vendors at the school
 gate.

 The
official adults belong to a higher socio-economic strata as compared
to the students of the school. They come from nearby colonies that
are considered to be better off than Mandolla where a majority of the
schoolchildren stay. As per the school records, the students'
families earn between Rs 3,000 and Rs 5,000. A majority of them are
engaged in unorganised labour in the nearby mandi (market) and
employed in semi-skilled and unskilled occupations like selling
fruits and vegetables, loading and unloading of goods, pulling
rickshaws, driving trucks, or vending goods. Children help their
families with the work or in the running of the household. This
article demonstrates how the perception and interaction of the
official adults in the school regarding the children is primarily
based on the class difference that prevails between them.

Identifying
 by Class

 Bourdieu's
(1984, 1996) economic, cultural and social capital incorporates both
the material and the non-material aspects of class. The economic
capital which is about material wealth can be converted into the
cultural and social a-spects of capital. The cultural capital
alludes to linguistic skills, education, possession of artefacts such
as books; the social capital refers to the social relationships and
networks. The present section demonstrates how the class divide
between the official adults and the children's families --
translated in economic, social and cultural capital --
determines how the official adults look at children and their
background. In the school, instead of addressing them by their names
they are often identified by a range of personal and social
categories that evoke their class identity. The children are
addressed by the occupations in which they or their families are
involved. For instance, Rahul is called kelewala (banana
seller), Abhishek is andewala (egg seller) while Deepmala is
referred to by her lahsan (garlic)-related work. With such
individual markers, all the class children are also identified by
their proximity to, and their parents' o-ccupational
association with the space of the mandi, as they are
collectively called mandiwalon (those who belong to the
mandi). Children are also labelled according to the spaces
they inhabit, as the ones who stay in jhuggis ((hutments) are
often called jhuggiwalon while all the children are
 collectively addressed as

Subject: [AI] Circular of documents required for railways identity card
 for
 e-ticketing

 Dear friends,

I have been reading about difficulties of our friends in issuance of
 I-card
by DRM of Northern Railways. I have been trying to find a circular and I
succeeded in finding it on net. It appears to me that people in DRM
 office
are deliberately troubling persons with disabilities. Therefore, I have
decided to paste below the circular so that these people will not be
 able
 to
harass any more. If all of you agree, we can fix up a date and all of us
 can
reach there for our identity cards. In case, you people decide to join
together, let me know and I will join you. My mobile No. is: 986124.
 The
 circular is pasted below:

 News Feed

 Ministry of Railways - India
 December 12, 2014 *
RAILWAY EXTENDS E-TICKETING FACILITY FOR BOOKING OF RAIL TICKETS TO
DIFFERENTLY - ABLED PERSONS In order to afford greater convenience in
 the

 handicapped/
Hearing Speech impaired persons/Mentally Challenged/ Vision Challenged
 passengers.
Such persons desirous of availing e-ticketing facility are requested to
submit their original handicapped medical certificate along with two
 copies
of recent passport size photographs, photo-identity proof and proof of
 Date
of Birth in the Commercial Branch of nearest Divisional Railway
 Manager's
Office. After due verification of the certificate/documents, such
 persons
will be issued Photo-identity card through which facilities of
 e-ticketing
can be availed for booking of rail tickets.

 Yours sincerely,

[AI] Oliver Sacks Writes: 'I am now face to face with dying. But I am not finished with living'

2015-02-19 Thread avinash shahi
A MONTH ago, I felt that I was in good health, even robust health. At
81, I still swim a mile a day. But my luck has run out -- a few weeks
ago I learned that I have multiple metastases in the liver. Nine years
ago it was discovered that I had a rare tumor of the eye, an ocular
melanoma. Although the radiation and lasering to remove the tumor
ultimately left me blind in that eye, only in very rare cases do such
tumors metastasize. I am among the unlucky 2 percent.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/19/opinion/oliver-sacks-on-learning-he-has-terminal-cancer.html
I feel grateful that I have been granted nine years of good health and
productivity since the original diagnosis, but now I am face to face
with dying. The cancer occupies a third of my liver, and though its
advance may be slowed, this particular sort of cancer cannot be
halted.

It is up to me now to choose how to live out the months that remain to
me. I have to live in the richest, deepest, most productive way I can.
In this I am encouraged by the words of one of my favorite
philosophers, David Hume, who, upon learning that he was mortally ill
at age 65, wrote a short autobiography in a single day in April of
1776. He titled it My Own Life.

I now reckon upon a speedy dissolution, he wrote. I have suffered
very little pain from my disorder; and what is more strange, have,
notwithstanding the great decline of my person, never suffered a
moment's abatement of my spirits. I possess the same ardour as ever in
study, and the same gaiety in company.

I have been lucky enough to live past 80, and the 15 years allotted to
me beyond Hume's three score and five have been equally rich in work
and love. In that time, I have published five books and completed an
autobiography (rather longer than Hume's few pages) to be published
this spring; I have several other books nearly finished.

Hume continued, I am ... a man of mild dispositions, of command of
temper, of an open, social, and cheerful humour, capable of
attachment, but little susceptible of enmity, and of great moderation
in all my passions.

Here I depart from Hume. While I have enjoyed loving relationships and
friendships and have no real enmities, I cannot say (nor would anyone
who knows me say) that I am a man of mild dispositions. On the
contrary, I am a man of vehement disposition, with violent
enthusiasms, and extreme immoderation in all my passions.

And yet, one line from Hume's essay strikes me as especially true: It
is difficult, he wrote, to be more detached from life than I am at
present.

Over the last few days, I have been able to see my life as from a
great altitude, as a sort of landscape, and with a deepening sense of
the connection of all its parts. This does not mean I am finished with
life.

On the contrary, I feel intensely alive, and I want and hope in the
time that remains to deepen my friendships, to say farewell to those I
love, to write more, to travel if I have the strength, to achieve new
levels of understanding and insight.

This will involve audacity, clarity and plain speaking; trying to
straighten my accounts with the world. But there will be time, too,
for some fun (and even some silliness, as well).

I feel a sudden clear focus and perspective. There is no time for
anything inessential. I must focus on myself, my work and my friends.
I shall no longer look at NewsHour every night. I shall no longer
pay any attention to politics or arguments about global warming.

This is not indifference but detachment -- I still care deeply about
the Middle East, about global warming, about growing inequality, but
these are no longer my business; they belong to the future. I rejoice
when I meet gifted young people -- even the one who biopsied and
diagnosed my metastases. I feel the future is in good hands.

I have been increasingly conscious, for the last 10 years or so, of
deaths among my contemporaries. My generation is on the way out, and
each death I have felt as an abruption, a tearing away of part of
myself. There will be no one like us when we are gone, but then there
is no one like anyone else, ever. When people die, they cannot be
replaced. They leave holes that cannot be filled, for it is the fate --
the genetic and neural fate -- of every human being to be a unique
individual, to find his own path, to live his own life, to die his own
death.

I cannot pretend I am without fear. But my predominant feeling is one
of gratitude. I have loved and been loved; I have been given much and
I have given something in return; I have read and traveled and thought
and written. I have had an intercourse with the world, the special
intercourse of writers and readers.

Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this
beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege
and adventure.

Hi Mohit, whats the cost of cartridge compatible to your printer? I
have seen few printers those are not too expensive, but the cost of
cartridge is near about 4,000 rupees which can print maximum 1500
pages, by this way the actual cost of one printed page will be near
about 3 rupees. Is there any cost effective lazer cartridge?

 Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The
 design
 is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
 expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other
models, you require special tools to do so and it is done at their
 service
 station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as

 a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down
 early.
You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good
tork. You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up
 and
I had got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of
 getting
 used to.

 I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a
trimmer. I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared
 to
 the traditional rasors.

 Hi
I have been using electric shaver for at least 30 years. It has not
 made
 any
adverse effect on my skin at all or made the beard denser.

I have used a few of them and found Phillips ones better than the rest.

 I
have been shaving alternative days and the pattern has stayed for many
 years
 this way.

You get them in 2 head and 3 head. It does not matter at all.
 Similarly,
 you
get direct drive that is it runs direct from power source and others
 run
from rechargeable batteries or disposal batteries. All of these
 combinations
 run fine.

I last bought a Phillips shaver a year back. It runs on battery and
 does
 not
come with charger. It is a twin head one and I got it from Snapdeal for
 Rs.
1,111. There was some offer running then and its list price was around
1,900. The battery arrangement was non standard and I was almost going
 to
return it and checked the battery position on the manual. Other than
 that

 I
did not find it difficult at all. In fact this model is small in size,
Easier to clean it up. I don't have the model number readily now.

Even if you were to shave weekly, you can still do so on the electric
 shaver
 as well.

The electrical shaver are rugged and requires no maintaince except the
cleaning up. This too, we can do it ourselves.

Let me add, I do use the conventional rasors
 occasionally.Therefore,both
 the
conventional rasor and the electric shaver are safe to use and it is
 only

 a
 matter of preference.

2015-02-19 Thread Akash Gupta
hi mohib
I have purchased canon LBP2900 IN 2011 and still it is working.
It was 5600 rs. and with 2 years varenti. A laser printer doesn't use
cartiledge, it uses toner. The cost of toner is 250 rs. One recharge
of toner prints 2000 pages. I haven't recharged it yet because I use
it not much. I prefer you should not take any inkjet printer. because
you have to insert ink periodically and have to change its cartiledge.
A shopkeeper suggested me that If you don't use inkjet printer for 10
or more days, cartiledge can be damaged.
You should purchase lezer printer. Although it is expensive but you
will not pay anything instead of toner after 2000 pages printing.

I have most of the books.

please reply to this mail so that I can share them.

Re: [AI] Electric shaver for men

2015-02-19 Thread Rishi Kewalramani

Dear Bhushan and others,
We started this discussion about electric shavers for facial use which was
fine and no one had any objection to that.
But when some members started querrying about the same for the pubic area,
that was certainly awkward.

And that is why some members are objecting to such a thread and rightly so.
Let us respect the views of others.
And as was rightly pointed out, the answer to such private querries can be
easily found by a little googling.

I started this querry and would like to thank everyone for their valuable
responses about the facial electric shavers.
I too did some research and have come to some conclusion which suits my
needs, wich I would like to share.
The Philips Aqua touch and Norelco rotary shavers are good for medium and
light beards.
But if one has a thick growth, then the top-end foil shavers do a better
job.
Ofcourse these are expensive but since my work requires me to have a clean
shave every other day, I dont mind investing on a good shaver.

So after a thorough research, I've decided to buy the following shaver:
Braun 799 CC electronic foil shaver.
This is a wet and dry shaver, fully water proof and it comes with a cleaning
machine, so one need not worry about cleaning the blades.

Its for around 25k in India.

A similar model viz. Braun 790CC is equally good but it is only for dry use
and not fully water proof.

This is for around 20k.

But if you have any relative or friend coming down from the U.S, you can get
the 799CC model for around $280 and the 790CC model for around $200.

I had a relative who just came down from the U.S and got the Braun 799Cc
model and I must say its a fantastic electric shaver.
Within 4 minutes I have a clean shaven face and it takes care of the hardest
of stubbles.
I understand its quite pricy but if you are looking for a top-end shaver, I
would recommend it.

Thanks and regards,
And let us please respect the views of others and not make others feel
uncomfortable with private querries which can be easily googled out,

Sincerely,
Rishi.

Subject: [AI] sanitary napkin vs tampon? threading, plucker, or waxing? oops
or only electric shavers?

Dear all,

Greetings from Mumbai.

i have read the very interesting discussions going on on this list, and i
would request someone to provide me with the guidelines of the list again-
it seems we are pushing boundaries each time.

In a very recent eenthusiastic thread active on the list i can only say that
it is shocking how couple of points could be related to blindness or
accessibility:

-what should be done first, trimming or shaving

-how much time does a shave take

-if someone has a hard growth or a soft one

-how to clean the blade

-getting rid of the pubic hair

the first one or two exchanges were okay or could be directly/indirectly
related to accessibility but seriously the 37 others that followed?

these are only a few out of the many objectionable contents.

As a woman i can and will share my idea that this list suddenly seems like
an electronic space invader. for those who dont know who space invaders
are, let me tell you. they are those men who share a two seater bench with a
woman and take up three quarters of that seat/bench. now why do i say that ?
because the gendered discussion going on this list reflects a very strong
patriarchal attitude and male hegemony. i can see how objections by women
were royally ignored.

it is not about personal is political but about the boundaries of a said
list and where i choose to be. if Access India decides that the boundaries
have changed and they are okay with gendered discussions and personal
matters that concern the blind then just for a minute reflect on this.

Women will absolutely bring up the accessibility of a sanitary napkin vs
tampon. i am sure menstrual issues are of great concern to blind women. if
toilet habits of men are okay being discussed here so should be that of
women. and of course we will too indulge into enlighting discussions of
whether waxing is more doable than self threading, and elaborate on how
frequently will we have to do the hair removal, or which method will leave
our skin soft and not let it go dark.

well, i really cant miss out on personal is political. we could bring up sex
positions on this list, because blindness leaves many people apprehensive
about not having seen sex positions earlier and lack of that impacting their
sexual lives. i work on gender, sexual rights, and disability so definitely
this wont make me shy away.

the point is that please tell us what is access India all about and some of
us will be happy to decide whether or not we want to be in this space and of
course others may choose to be here with full awareness of what can come up
and will be acceptable. of course some others like me will start utilising
the newly pushed boundaries!

Happy to comply.

Cheers,

Nidhi Goyal

[AI] Drought in Marathwada: Only children, old and crippled left in parched villages

2015-02-19 Thread avinash shahi
Written by Kavitha Iyer | Beed/ Parbhani | February 20, 2015 2:30 am
http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/drought-in-marathwada-only-children-old-and-crippled-left-in-parched-villages/99/
At first, the hush over Dhamoni village in Parbhani district appears
to be of noon siesta, but then the padlocked doors appear. The annual
seasonal migration in search of employment, common in large swathes of
drought-prone Maharashtra, is more acute this year than ever before.
The village economy is facing crisis following the two droughts and a
hailstorm.

The 60-odd kacchha homes comprise the 'tanda' or extension of the
1,800-voter village, visibly more impoverished than the main Dhamoni,
and where there is almost nobody left behind, but children, the aged
and the disabled.

Skipping school today, giggles 11-year-old Sunita Nagurao Rathod,
because aajoba is unwell. Her 76-year-old grandfather Sakaram
Ganpati Rathod has a rasping cough in addition to the daily aches from
a limb lost to atrophy. His sons and their wives, as well as other
able relatives, are all camping as daily-wagers at a sugar factory in
Parli, some 25 kilometres away from their home.

RelatedRabi sowing down by 40%, farmers here stare at crippling
poverty and ask 'where is water?'
From drought zone: Despite rainfall, Vidarbha farmers left high dry
Short films freeze long-term solution to drought

In his neighbourhood, 60-year-old Sonerao Rama Rathod has stayed back
to tend to the livestock -- a cow and a skeletal bullock. He has sent
both sons to the sugar factory this year after incurring losses worth
nearly Rs 4 lakh over the past 24 months.

I sowed soyabean and cotton on my two acres and another 2.5 acres
that I rented for the kharif season. But I didn't recover a penny, he
says. He is not sowing rabi crop as his unable to get any more money
on credit.

The Maharashtra government has declared nearly 24,000 villages hit by
drought this year, and the refrain in administrative circles is that
the water scarcity this year is nowhere near as acute as it was in the
last drought in 2012-13, even though agricultural drought is severe.
However, that self-assuredness is nowhere visible in the villages of
Marathwada, where each one of the 8,000-odd villages has been declared
drought hit and where rabi sowing this year is down by 40 per cent.

In our villages, drought is now experienced as an inability to live
here any longer, laments Kesarbai Mulay, in her late 40s. Life as we
know it is coming to an end in the village. Five hundred to six
hundred people left the village in the last couple of months, she
says. Weddings in our families were cancelled, either because there's
no money or because girls don't want to marry into drought-hit
villages. They'll prefer a labourer in a city to a man with a few
acres of land here. Her nephew Datta Mulay, in his late 20s, tried to
make it in the city, going as far as Pune and Mumbai after his wedding
was called off. They make you work 12-14 hours in the city, and the
pay is Rs 8,000 a month. I couldn't do it, he says, adding that those
without any cushion stayed back for the paltry pay and back-breaking
hours, and are unlikely to come back and face creditors any time soon
.

Forget creditors, who will ever come back and go walking two
kilometres for two handis of water everyday? asks 45-year-old
Satvasheela Nagnath Mulay, fretting about the now-postponed wedding of
her daughter Mohini who she says is 19 but looks closer to 16. Her
husband has begun to put his small goods carrier vehicle to commercial
use, taking transportation jobs nearby. Mohini used to walk 4 km to
school in neighbouring Injegaon -- Dhamoni's school offers only Class
VII -- so she's actually game to do another round for water, but it is
rationed by whoever owns the land on which the borewell is still
functional.

At Dhamoni's two anganwadis, where 134 and 122 children below six are
enrolled, attendance is 30 per cent, a seasonal low of 40-50 per cent
exacerbated this year by families away looking for work. Kavita Bate,
one of the two anganwadi teachers, says: This year many more have
left, and their absences are longer. At the primary school, several
children in uniform are carrying plates of khichdi home, for there's
no water in the school.
Borewells have run dry everywhere. Out of the 76 talukas, 61 are
showing a dip in water tables as of October last year. Villagers also
throw numbers about loosely -- a few dozen animals sold off, rising
substance abuse, three or four farmer suicides in the last two years,
but with doors of these households locked, there's no way to verify
immediately.

An official in the office of Divisional Commissioner in Aurangabad
admits that agragrian suicides, seen until recently as a pattern only
in Vidarbha, have been on the rise, though there is no scientific
evidence yet to join the dots unequivocally between drought, crop loss
and these deaths. In any case, the administration has begun keeping
count, though

Dear Bhushan and others,
We started this discussion about electric shavers for facial use which was
fine and no one had any objection to that.
But when some members started querrying about the same for the pubic area,
that was certainly awkward.
And that is why some members are objecting to such a thread and rightly
so.

But if one has a thick growth, then the top-end foil shavers do a better
job.
Ofcourse these are expensive but since my work requires me to have a
clean shave every other day, I dont mind investing on a good shaver.

So after a thorough research, I've decided to buy the following shaver:
Braun 799 CC electronic foil shaver.
This is a wet and dry shaver, fully water proof and it comes with a
cleaning machine, so one need not worry about cleaning the blades.

Its for around 25k in India.

A similar model viz. Braun 790CC is equally good but it is only for dry
use and not fully water proof.

This is for around 20k.

But if you have any relative or friend coming down from the U.S, you can
get the 799CC model for around $280 and the 790CC model for around $200.

I had a relative who just came down from the U.S and got the Braun 799Cc
model and I must say its a fantastic electric shaver.
Within 4 minutes I have a clean shaven face and it takes care of the
hardest of stubbles.
I understand its quite pricy but if you are looking for a top-end shaver,
I would recommend it.

Thanks and regards,
And let us please respect the views of others and not make others feel
uncomfortable with private querries which can be easily googled out,

Sincerely,
Rishi.

ago it was discovered that I had a rare tumor of the eye, an ocular
melanoma. Although the radiation and lasering to remove the tumor
ultimately left me blind in that eye, only in very rare cases do such
tumors metastasize. I am among the unlucky 2 percent.
 http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/19/opinion/oliver-sacks-on-learning-he-
has-terminal-cancer.html I feel grateful that I have been granted nine
years of good health and productivity since the original diagnosis,
but now I am face to face with dying. The cancer occupies a third of
my liver, and though its advance may be slowed, this particular sort
 of cancer cannot be halted.

[AI] Remove superstition about mental illness, Modi tells doctors

2015-02-19 Thread avinash shahi
Citing lack of knowledge and awareness and superstition as the
challenges in the field of mental health, Prime Minister Narendra Modi
on Wednesday asked young professionals to treat patients with empathy
and work for eradicating superstition regarding mental illness in
society.
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/remove-superstition-about-mental-illness-modi-tells-doctors/article1-1318274.aspx
Delivering his convocation address at the National Institute of Mental
Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) here, he said superstition often
blocked proper treatment and cure for the mentally ill. He said the
field of mental health faces the triple challenges of lack of
knowledge, lack of awareness, and superstition, and people should
understand that mental illness is curable scientifically.

Modi, who started his speech by greeting the audience in Kannada,
welcomed poor children from different schools in Bengaluru who were
present at the Convocation, calling them 'special guests'.

Stating that it was his wish that some poor school students be invited
at the convocation that he attends across the country, he said when
these children attend such events it will give rise to aspirations in
them.

He also encouraged the students who were being awarded degrees at the
convocation to interact with these children, saying it could prove
inspirational for them. NIMHANS that evolved from mental asylum in
1850 became the All India Institute of Mental Health founded by Dr
Govindaswamy in 1954 and in 2013 it rose to the status of Institute of
National Importance.

Union Health Minister and President of the NIMHANS Institute Body
Jagat Prakash Nadda said mental health and well being was an emerging
area of concern for the entire globe, and India was no exception.
High suicide rates, depression, violence, discord are all
manifestation of poor mental health, he said.

Re: [AI] A Menstrual Kit for Visually Impaired Girls.

Has anyone baught this kit?

If you thought periods were one of those difficult days of the month
for a girl or a woman, think of a visually impaired girl who has to
manage her periods every month. Realising that menstruation is still
such a taboo subject in Indian society along with the many
restrictions which a girl has to face due to age - old myths, Sadhvi
Thukral, a Delhi based designer decided to work in the field of
providing information about menstruation. During her research, while
studying at the Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi, Sadhvi found that
there weren't many sources of information available for visually
impaired girls and therefore decided to work in this area.

She designed a kit which could serve as library material and would be
made available at Institutions specialized in the teaching and
training of visual impaired girls. However, this kit is designed in
such a way that parents can also purchase it for their daughters.

The kit is divided into two parts. The first part has tactile diagrams
along with text in Braille and in print. The second part has a
life-sized, three-dimensional model for demonstration and training. It
provides a holistic approach towards providing the basic essential
information about menstruation to visually impaired girls.

Parts of the content used in the Kit are an adaptation of TARSHI's
books on sexuality and reproductive health. The contents of the kit
have been validated by the students of Saksham Daksh, Noida, India.

'Kahani Her Mahine Ki', as the name suggests, is a natural phenomena
which reoccurs every month in most women. This kit covers the subject
of menstruation and helps girls in the effective management of their
 periods.

 The kit comprises of:

 1. Tactile diagrams and material in the form of Information Slides,
with labels in Braille and in print of the different parts of the
body. The Information Slates fit into a box with slides.

 2. Each slate has text in Braille for the visually impaired and in
text for those who are not.

 3. It also contains a life-sized model of the human body for demonstration.

The kit contains informative slides made out of plywood. Plywood is
readily available in the local markets and can be constructed simply
by a trained carpenter. It contains five slides. A user can easily
take out the slides one by one in serial order, beginning from the top
to the bottom. Each slide is labelled with numbers to make it easy for
the user to put it back.

 These slides explain:
 * How to keep your private parts clean
 * Kinds of pads available
 * How to wear a pad
 * How to dispose a used pad and how to wear a tampon
 * How to dispose a used tampon
 * How to make and use reusable homemade sanitary options
 * How to wash reusable pads and pouches for pads
 * Suitable Panties

The diagrams seen on the slides are made out of terracotta and paper
mash. It is 100% sustainable and is made by local artisans. It is a
great source of income and can be adapted and styled in accordance
with any ethnicity, based on the kind of clay modelling or pottery
style prominent in the area. It is also a rapidly degenerating craft
and this is a sure-shot way of reviving it.

The kit focuses on the bodily and hormonal changes in adolescent girls
leading up to menstruation. It informs the reader about various
products available in the market and even suggests home remedies for
the same. A part of the training focuses on teaching the audience
proper methods of usage and disposal of the products.

 Life-size Model:

The life-size model is a replication of the lower torso of the female
body complete with genitals made out of waste paper and silicon. A
special mechanism has been worked out to demonstrate the real process
of menstruation in the human body.

Sadhvi Thukarl is a Delhi based designer. She worked on Kahani Har
Mahine ki in association with Vikalp Design, the kit is documented by
the Museum of Menstruation. This project also won the 'Most Innovative
Award' at Openworks. Sadhvi is also looking for collaborations in
 taking this project further .

Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades. There is no other
expenditure really.

On some model, it is possible to clean even the blades, while on other models,
you require special tools to do so and it is done at their service station.

Unfortunately, the blades are not standardised across their model and as a
result you cannot swap parts if you have other models.

If the battery is built in, this would be a factor for it to break down early.
You can consider PQ202 Phillips shaver
It is light, small and has a removable batteries. The motor has a good tork.
You can use a rechargeable battery. It is very easy to clean it up and I had
got for Rs. 1,111 on Snapdeal. The price may be different now.

The placement of the battery is non conventional. It is a matter of getting
used to.

I would recommend this model.

This does not have a trimmer. Actually, it is not necessary to have a trimmer.
I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to the
traditional rasors.

 Hi
I have been using electric shaver for at least 30 years. It has not
made any adverse effect on my skin at all or made the beard denser.

I have used a few of them and found Phillips ones better than the
rest. I have been shaving alternative days and the pattern has stayed
 for many years this way.

You get them in 2 head and 3 head. It does not matter at all.
Similarly, you get direct drive that is it runs direct from power
source and others run from rechargeable batteries or disposal
batteries. All of these combinations run fine.

I last bought a Phillips shaver a year back. It runs on battery and
does not come with charger. It is a twin head one and I got it from
 Snapdeal for Rs.
1,111. There was some offer running then and its list price was around
1,900. The battery arrangement was non standard and I was almost going
to return it and checked the battery position on the manual. Other
than that I did not find it difficult at all. In fact this model is
small in size, Easier to clean it up. I don't have the model number
 readily now.

Even if you were to shave weekly, you can still do so on the electric
 shaver as well.

The electrical shaver are rugged and requires no maintaince except the
cleaning up. This too, we can do it ourselves.

Let me add, I do use the conventional rasors
occasionally. Therefore, both the conventional rasor and the electric
shaver are safe to use and it is only a matter of preference.

 Harish.

Dear all,

Greetings from Mumbai.

i have read the very interesting discussions going on on this list, and i
would request someone to provide me with the guidelines of the list again-
it seems we are pushing boundaries each time.

In a very recent eenthusiastic thread active on the list i can only say
that

it is shocking how couple of points could be related to blindness or
accessibility:

-what should be done first, trimming or shaving

-how much time does a shave take

-if someone has a hard growth or a soft one

-how to clean the blade

-getting rid of the pubic hair

the first one or two exchanges were okay or could be directly/indirectly
related to accessibility but seriously the 37 others that followed?

these are only a few out of the many objectionable contents.

As a woman i can and will share my idea that this list suddenly seems like
an electronic space invader. for those who dont know who space invaders
are, let me tell you. they are those men who share a two seater bench with
a
woman and take up three quarters of that seat/bench. now why do i say that
?

because the gendered discussion going on this list reflects a very strong
patriarchal attitude and male hegemony. i can see how objections by women
were royally ignored.

it is not about personal is political but about the boundaries of a said
list and where i choose to be. if Access India decides that the boundaries
have changed and they are okay with gendered discussions and personal
matters that concern the blind then just for a minute reflect on this.

Women will absolutely bring up the accessibility of a sanitary napkin vs
tampon. i am sure menstrual issues are of great concern to blind women.
if

toilet habits of men are okay being discussed here so should be that of
women. and of course we will too indulge into enlighting discussions of
whether waxing is more doable than self threading, and elaborate on how
frequently will we have to do the hair removal, or which method will leave
our skin soft and not let it go dark.

well, i really cant miss out on personal is political. we could bring up
sex

positions on this list, because blindness leaves many people apprehensive
about not having seen sex positions earlier and lack of that impacting
their
sexual lives. i work on gender, sexual rights, and disability so
definitely

this wont make me shy away.

the point is that please tell us what is access India all about and some
of
us will be happy to decide whether or not we want to be in this space and
of
course others may choose to be here with full awareness of what can come
up

and will be acceptable. of course some others like me will start utilising
the newly pushed boundaries!

Happy to comply.

Cheers,

Nidhi Goyal

disability and gender rights activist

 students with visual impairment
 To: shahi88avin...@gmail.com

 Dear Sir,

The Indian Law Society established the Law College in 1924, with a view to
impart socially relevant legal education with scientific temper. The
college is amongst the premier institutions, universities, and colleges
undertaking legal and juridical studies. We are aware that the 'Higher
Education for Persons with Special Needs' (HEPSN) program is now integral
to the agenda of the University Grants Commission and keeping in view the
same college has established the Equal Opportunity cum Enabling Cell on 4
January 2013. Presently in our college around 20 differently-abled students
are prosecuting the study of law. The main objective underlying the
establishment of this Cell is to develop awareness in the higher education
 system.

This year the Cell has decided to organize an ambitious national level
'youth fest cum legal orientation program for disabled students with
special focus on students with visual impairment' on 28 February and 1
March 2015, to bring together visually challenged students from
universities and colleges across the country and to provide them exposure
to the relevant knowledge of law, career counseling and personality
development tips. A number of visually challenged role models will motivate
the students by their presentations and we will also nurture the cultural
and sports talent of the students by organizing a small cultural and sports
 event.

We heartily extend our warm invitation to you to participate in this event
and offer your valuable inputs. We would like you to be on the panel during
the 'Open house' on 28 February 2015 from 5 pm - 6 pm. We would also
request you to make a presentation of about 20 minutes motivating students
about the career opportunities in the field of Research, in the
 session on 'Career
guidance and counselling' on 1 March 2015 from 8.30 am - 11.00 am.

We request you to nominate 4-5 visually challenged students from your
institution for the event. We have made lodging and boarding facilities for
the participants from 27 February afternoon to 2 March evening. We would
also pick them from the railway station if required. All this is free of
charge. However, we cannot promise travel cost reimbursement due to limited
funds. We are attaching herewith the Registration form, the invitation

ago it was discovered that I had a rare tumor of the eye, an ocular
melanoma. Although the radiation and lasering to remove the tumor
ultimately left me blind in that eye, only in very rare cases do such
tumors metastasize. I am among the unlucky 2 percent.
 http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/19/opinion/oliver-sacks-on-learning-he-

years of good health and productivity since the original diagnosis,
but now I am face to face with dying. The cancer occupies a third of
my liver, and though its advance may be slowed, this particular sort
 of cancer cannot be halted.

[AI] sanitary napkin vs tampon? threading, plucker, or waxing? oops or only electric shavers?

2015-02-19 Thread nidhi goyal

Cheers,

Dear Nidhi,

I completely agree with you! Today we are using electronic things for
almost

everything!

Well said and I think we need to have things clear as to what all should
be

discussed here. When I have written just a 'thank you' to someone who

Yes I am interested in lazer printer only. But I am surprised to hear
that toner costs merely 250 rupees with 2000 prints!
I have checked that toner for HP printers comes near about 2 - 3
thousands rupees, with 700 prints.
Akash, are u sure toner is available for that cost, i.e. 250 rupees
and having capability to print 2000 pages?

 Hi Vikas, Vamshi
As such, these Phillips shavers really lasts a very long time. The design
 is
such, it does not require replacement of the blades.

Actually, it is not necessary to have a
trimmer. I find the electric shavers takes less time to shave compared to
 the traditional rasors.

Correction: Rs. 250 is not the actual cost of the toner, rather it is the
cost of refilling it. The actual cost of a toner is about Rs. 2900.
Re-filling a toner can be done only for 2-3 times after which the blades

This may sound bit odd but my friend who is totally blind would like
to know that is there any electronic razors which can help him cut
the pubic hairs as he is finding bit difficult to use the traditional
 razors.
 Thanks,

It is very easy to clean it
 up
 and
I had got for Rs.

Re: [AI] Need to know the best Printer for moderate use

2015-02-19 Thread Akash Gupta
hi mohib
Mr. vikas is right. I have used wrong language in my previous mail. I
had written:
One recharge of toner prints 2000 pages.
My father is using same printer in his business place and has used it
from 5 years. He has refilled it for 4 times. But toner is
stillworking well. You have to change it after 3 to 5 refills. But
better than inkjet printers.

Hey Akash, I just checked, the scanner which u are using consumes
Canon Cartridge 303, and the cost of this cartridge is 2000 rupees. It
