[AI] MUMBAI: 50% schools in state lack toilets for disabled students, a fifth lack ramps

2015-04-14 Thread avinash shahi
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/50-schools-in-state-lack-toilets-for-disabled-students-a-fifth-lack-ramps/articleshow/46927363.cms
Inclusion of children with special needs in schools across the state
still has a long way to go, reveals the data collected under the
District Information System for Education (DISE) 2014-2015.

According to the data which is collected from all schools across the
country every year, the 2014-2015 academic year had 3,33,498 children
with special needs enrolled in class I to XII in over a lakh schools
in the state. The numbers is down from last year's 3,47,424. The ten
categories of disabilities identified in the data include visual,
speech or hearing impairment, autism, learning disabilities, physical
disabilities etc.

The data also shows that more than half the schools in the state are
not equipped with toilets for children with special needs. Out of the
1.06 lakh schools only 41,890 schools have a toilet which is disable
friendly. Mumbai, which consists of two districts has 1,818 schools
out of the total 4,060 have such toilets.

Ramps for children with special needs, which is one of the eleven
parameters required to be fulfilled under the Right to Education Act,
2009, too is missing from several schools. As many as 18,182 schools
in the state do not have a ramp. Of these, 461 schools are in the city
of Mumbai.

Experts feel these are mandatory things that all schools must have in
place. "There is a mandate that schools must admit children with
special needs according to their location. Once there is even a single
such child in school, there could be a wheelchair. This means that
schools must have ramps and toilets which are modified to suit the
needs of these children," said Rekha Vijaykar, Director, ADAPT - Able
Disable All People Together.

Officials said that government is doing their bit. "According to the
norms prescribed by the Right to Education Act, schools are trying to
fulfil infrastructure norms as and when they can. The state is also
providing funding for schools which require aid," said P R Pawar,
joint director, Maharashtra Prathamik Shikshan Parishad.

The Right to Education Act of 2009 calls for all inclusion of
children with special needs in regular schools. "There needs to be an
overall awareness about various disabilities. The state should look at
each student and empower them with better environment, safety and
security. When this is done without discrimination, only then will
students with special needs get a chance at equal opportunities," said
psychiatrist, Dr Harish Shetty.

[AI] Lectures of interest: From Rights to Adjudication and Beyond: Legal Anthropology Perspectives

2015-04-14 Thread avinash shahi

Date: Thursday, 16 April 2015

Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

CSH library, 2 Aurangzeb Road, New Delhi – 110011

The Centre for Social Sciences and Humanities (CSH)is delighted to invite you to

a lecture by

Dr. Kriti Kapila and Dr. Anuj Bhuwania

on

From Rights to Adjudication and Beyond: Legal Anthropology Perspectives

on Contemporary India

chaired by

Prof. dr. Leïla Choukroune

The Public Aspirations of the Law in India

Dr. Kriti Kapila

Why do ordinary people litigate in India, knowing fully well the
routine delays and injustices

that are written into the process? In my presentation I
suggest that the place of law in

ordinary lives is not merely instrumental, i.e. as a problem solver.
The relationship between

law and society in contemporary India is created equally by the gap
between the two as it is

by the way law uniquely positions itself above routine
failure. Using my ethnographic

research among the Gaddis in Himachal Pradesh and the recent upsurge
of khap justice, I

explore some themes of the ordinary work of law in India today.

Dr. Kriti Kapila is Lecturer in Anthropolgy and Law at the India

Institute, King’s College London. Her main research interests lie

in understanding the public life of the culture‐concept ‐ in

popular politics, law and public policy. She has written

extensively on the politics of indigenous recognition with respect

to tribes in India. Kriti completed her PhD in Social Anthropology

Page 2

at the London School of Economics. Before joining King’s, she
 was a British Academy

Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Social Anthropology,
University of Cambridge and

Fellow of Wolfson College.

Public Interest Litigation as a slum demolition machine

Dr. Anuj Bhuwania

In this paper, I will examine how the procedural departures made
possible by India’s unique

Public Interest Litigation (PIL) jurisdiction enabled it to
function as a slum demolition

machine. I argue that most of the city‐related PIL cases of the first
decade of the 21

st

 century

often did not end up in any ‘judgments’ at all but in an endless
spiral of ‘orders,’ which are not

reported in law journals. This enabled the Court to perform a role
that can scarcely be called

adjudication, as it is usually conceived. However, much of the
scholarship on PIL has ignored

such specificities of this jurisdiction and has continued to
concentrate on the completed

judicial process, i.e. judgments and other reported decisions of the
courts, and the discursive

charge they have. I argue, on the other hand, that to
understand this phenomenon of the

court‐led remaking of the city in its materiality, the procedural
departures of PIL, which the

Delhi High Court took to its reduction ad absurdum in this period,
have to be understood and

foregrounded.

Dr. Anuj Bhuwania is an Assistant Professor in the Department

of Sociology at South Asian University, New Delhi. He studied law

in National Law School of India University, Bangalore and School

of Oriental and African Studies, London before doing his PhD in

Anthropology at Columbia University. He has been a visiting

fellow at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance (CSLG),

Jawaharlal Nehru University and at the Centre for the Study of

Developing Societies (CSDS), both in New Delhi.

Thank you for the response,
first thing,I don't know braille.
 I have some more questions...
Bluetooth headphones are familiar to me,but I don't understand the remote.
is it the remote of projector or your system?
from where can I get it?
what is the technical name of that stuff?
which type of headphone you are using?
I use jaws in 65% rate,is that rate ok?
but in slide show mode jaws sometimes responds very slowly. how can I
manage both listening and speaking?will it create break in the talk?

again thanks for the hopeful response...

Re: [AI] How to Manage Power Point presentation

2015-04-14 Thread Kiran Baug
 Hi,

In most of my presentations, I use bluetooth headphone and a remote to
change slides remotely.

When so ever i changed the slides via remote, i read the text with in
it by pressing the up and down keys given in the remote.

But in this case, the jaws should be in very high speed to cover the
time gap between listening and speaking.

2015-04-14 Thread Ritesh Tomer
Well I am lucky enough to be the part of entire proceedings regarding
two years B.Ed and M.Ed course designing in the department of
education D.U.
I think its a welcoming move of NCTE to introduce two years B.Ed and
M.Ed courses instead of one year as we are committed to produce good
teachers in the nation.
As per the introduction of special needs course goes, I would inform
you that it has not been given desirable space in the curriculum as it
is being kept of a 50 marks paper merely. And that to in the second
year of the programme.

<>Pre-Release notes of my experience with the Apple watch April 8th 2015
Pre-release notes of the Apple watch looking at accessibility

When I spent a few hours with the Apple watch on April 8th 2015, I
jotted down notes about the Apple watch’s physical description,
general overall points, low vision and speech features, hearing, Siri,
and Apple watch functions I am most looking forward to using.
At the end of this document, I have included a summary from Apple in
regards to the Apple watch accessibility features

Some initial points

In a recent podcast of mine looking at the click wheel on the iPod
nano 4/5th generations, and the touch screen access on the iPod nano
6/7th generations, VoiceOver access on the Apple watch has far
exceeded my expectations.

It is important to note that the Apple watch is a companion to the
iPhone and is designed to work in conjunction with the phone.

This is the first truly accessible main stream smart watch for people
who require various types of accessibility options such as large
print, speech output, mono audio etc.

When the Apple watch is available for pre-order on April 10 2015
(online or via the Apple Store app), you will be able to make an
appointment at an Apple store to look at the different Apple watch’s
and associated bands to sort out which combination is wright for you.
In addition, you will be able to discuss various features of the Apple
watch. Once the watch's are shipped on the 24th of April, you can
either get online or in store assistance to personalise and setup
your Apple watch.

Now on to my notes:

Physical description of the Apple watch:

1. The Apple watch is Rectangular in shape with rounded edges.
2. With the Apple watch on your left wrist, holding your arm in front of you:
Right edge: round Digital crown at top, and oval side (friends) button
at bottom.
left edge: across from the digital crown: speaker, and across from the
“Friends” button: microphone.
Top face: touch screen with the screen ending at the curved sides.
Back face: raised convex housing in the middle which contains the
magnetic charger plus the sensors. Two pin holes on either side near
where the bands connect to allow the bands to be detached by pressing
in on them. I.e. the bands fill like they have slotted in to the
Apple watch rather than being attached on either side by band pins.

General points:

1. During my brief play with the Apple watch, I did not have the
opportunity to set the watch up itself: either using the Apple watch
and the Apple watch app on the iPhone. In addition, I was more
looking at the low vision and VoiceOver experience when navigating the
interface, rather than using the apps which are accessible.
2. The Apple watch feels very very nice in the hand, like a smooth
square peace of glass.
3. The Digital crown was extremely easy to turn/press, and the
friends button just as easy to press. The digital crown does not
click when turned, but has a very smooth action. The digital crown
itself is bevelled. In actual fact, rather than turning the digital
crown around with two fingers, I just found myself using one finger on
top of the digital crown to move it.
4. Easy to connect the magnetic charger to the Apple watch. The side
of the charger that connects to the Apple watch has an indented edge
and the magnet moves the connection to the correct place. Not a hard
connection click, quite gentle.
5. I only had an opportunity to look at the leather loop band and the
rubber band. The leather loop band felt quite nice, but had some
difficulty in doing it up due to the fact that I had to put it on my
wrist and then do it up. The rubber band wasn’t a problem putting on
as with the leather loop as it was more a point of sliding the band
through to get to a point where you could put the pin through, and
then tuck it in to the slot on the band to hide the end.
6. The touch screen of the watch is the full face of the watch and
stops as you come to the curve around the edges: very easy to
identify, and certainly had no problems using gestures on the face of
the watch. i.e. didn’t go off the edges when using gestures.
7. Much preferred the wait of the Apple watch over the Apple Sports.
The sports is quite a bit lighter. I just prefer a bit of weight on
my wrist.
8. As far as using the glass surface on either the Sports or the Apple
watch, it didn’t really make any difference in performing gestures.
9. For me, the 42 millimetres Apple watch was a good size, and did not
feel to big on my wrist. You can tell the size difference between the
38 and the 42. It may be better for low vis

I am facing difficulty to remove it from there.
I am following the below steps in order to remove it, but for no gain:
1. I went to region and language.
2. a dialogue box opened, I went to keyboard and language tab.
3. I went to keyboard and other languages, change keyboard button.
4. a new dialogue box opened.
5. it shows, default input language, select one of the installed
language to use as default for all input field.
6. It shows, arabic egipt and english languages.
7. after selecting arabic language, I press tab.
8. But I can see only add button and properties button, and not the
remove button.

I am not getting it how to remove it.

become of 2 years duration and they do not have much to teach in the B.Ed
curriculum at this moment.

BASANT KUMAR MOHANTY

New Delhi, April 13: The National Council for Teacher Education has
introduced a compulsory paper on how to teach children with special
needs in its revised BEd and MEd syllabi.

The decision followed a countrywide survey last year that showed that
nearly six lakh physically or mentally challenged children between six
and 13 didn't go to school.

The NCTE last week signed an agreement with the Rehabilitation Council
of India (RCI), which has been regulating courses on special
education, to help prepare the curriculum and modules for the
compulsory paper that would be part of the general BEd and MEd
courses.

"The BEd and MEd courses did not have any compulsory paper on how to
teach special children. This year we have incorporated four compulsory
papers and one of them is on special education," NCTE chairperson
Santosh Panda told The Telegraph.

While the NCTE regulates general BEd and MEd courses, the RCI is the
controlling authority for courses on teaching people with
disabilities.

Panda said the RCI has agreed to increase the duration of BEd and MEd
courses on special education from one year to two years from the
2015-16 academic session starting in July-August to align with the
NCTE pattern. In January this year, the NCTE had decided to switch to
a two-year format.

The RCI has also agreed to train at least one teacher from all the
17,000 BEd and MEd colleges across the country in special education.

According to the National Sample Survey of Estimation - conducted by
the NGO Social and Rural Research Institute in collaboration with the
PSU Educational Consultants India Ltd in 2014 - some 60.41 lakh
children in the 6-13 age group didn't go to school. Among them, nearly
six lakh were physically or mentally challenged.

Professor Vinita Kaul, of the education department at Ambedkar
University, said teachers need special skills to deal with children
with special needs. The NCTE, she added, must make sure that all BEd
and MEd colleges engage at least one teacher with expertise on special
education so that teacher trainers get proper guidance in the subject.

The NCTE and the RCI have set up a committee under Professor N.K.
Jangira, of the National Council of Educational Research and Training
(NCERT), to draw up the two-year special education curricula. The
committee will also suggest the curriculum for the special education
papers in the general BEd and MEd streams.

Lawyer Ashok Agrawal - who had earlier filed a case against schools
for not implementing Right to Education rules that provide for
inclusive education to students across all categories - said the
situation was "changing gradually".

"Private schools in Delhi have engaged teachers trained in special
education," he said. "But the picture is grim in other states."

The other compulsory papers the NCTE has introduced are on yoga,
information and communications technology and gender studies.

Nvda will say "cell" if you have "read table coordinates" turned off in the
document reading preferences. If you turn this option on, NVDA will also
announce the cell coordinates like jaws does.

This is a more powerful feature since some users need to turn off cell
coordinate reading for certain types of content.

Re: [AI] Python programming

2015-04-14 Thread Manish Agrawal
I found eclipse with the py-dev extension to be really good. I use it all the
time.

If you have experience using visual studio, then that is also a fairly
accessible python dev environment.

Re: [AI] Want to know about reliance energy's website.

2015-04-14 Thread Neelima Surve
Yes! Maybe you are right, it could be, because, last month, one of my
friends, Rohiet Patil has also tried this website, to help me for
paying bill, but, due to some problems, we cannot go ahead, under his
guidance only, i tried again, this time this website at 2 3 time, but,
I could not pay, not even me, I asked to do it one of my teacher,
respected, Keshav Sir from Delhi, but, he also could not do it,
therefore I was asking.

Maybe, coincidently, We all 3 had tried in last days therefore also we
were receiving some errors.

Will surely try next time.

Regards,
Neelima
