Dear Ashik,

People will take it when the transition is beneficial and smooth.
It's all about getting comfortable.

I never received most ideal settings file till Bhavya helped me with
it. There is also a tts issue.
I don't think i am still comfortable at all with it on excel, though
it is great online.

But hat's off to those guys who are working hard on it. And it can be seen.

I am making a payment of Rs. 1000 to them. It won't fetch them
anything much. But it would boost their confidence.

 Hi Friends,

Few friends did tell me that NVDA is better on web accessibility.
 However, I experienced it today.

JAWS was not reading a clickable region below retail option on
 www.yesbank.in

It led me to take up the matter with Yes Bank IT department, but as it
turned out to be, NVDA worked and due to JAWS inability I was
 quarrelling with the Yes bank.

NVDA was also helpful when JAWS was not reading any calendar dates
 earlier.

Why one should pay so much for JAWS when a freeware can do a better
job. I only wish that NVDA was as smooth JAWS after installation or at
least ideal settings were shared with the users.

Re: [AI] Mass deletion of images and graphics from word docx

2015-04-22 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
There is one easy method.
But it will erase the font format of the text.
Just do:
1. select all.
2. copy the selection.
3. Open the notepad.
4. paste the text in a notepad.
The images will be automatically erased.
Now, Reverse the process as under:
1. select the text of the notepad.
2. copy the selection.
3. Paste the copied text in the MS word file.
The job is done.
Mind that the Font format of the text is set as normal. The font
size will be uniform, bold/italic etc will be erased.

Is it possible for any developer to test accessibility with each and

Just to boost up NVDA further, employees of a few Indian banks have

I think its the TTS issue which makes people remain with Jaws.

which ultimately forces me to rely on JAWS because JAWS has support to

the accessibility of these Business Application is there way to reach
them? I also want to know did any of you use Fin-one if yes please let
me know the accessibility part of this Business Application.

hi,
In my opinion it is not the issue of TTS for stickiness to Jaws.
In reality the issue is just opposite. Due to Espeak TTS, many person
prefer to NVDA.
The key reason of use of jaws is the freely availability of the cracks!
Otherwise, a license version is beyond the scope of many VI persons.
Being an open source, nvda has provided many flexibilities.

I'd advise people not to use PayPal as I tried once to donate several
dollars to an organisation but to my surprise, the money was deducted from
my account and the intended organisation also didn't receive any money on my
behalf. Upon following up the matter with the service team of PayPal, they
did not respond to my mails except the first one where in they said they
were looking into the matter. It's been almost more than a year now and I
don't expect any further response from them.

What a disappointment,

Not able to pay to NVDA. I wanted to pay $20 and Paypal asked me CAPJA.

Sorry boss.

And it can be
seen.

I am making a payment of Rs. 1000 to them. It won't fetch them
anything much. But it would boost their confidence.

Cheers NVDA

However, I experienced it today.

Subject: [AI] Bank Managers Going Mad.

Hello,

A visually impaired woman, a teacher at a primary school at a village, had
a joint salary account with her mother. Recently her mother died. The
branch manager refused to pay her salary etc from her account as, according
to the manager, she must have a legal guardian to operate the account.

She finally managed to open another salary account with another bank in her
locality. But her last month's salary is still in the said account which
the manager is not allowing her to withdraw.

I have asked her to immediately complain to the zonal office. Maybe her
problem will be solved. But I wonder how long the bank officials will
consider themselves guardians of the visually impaired and keep harassing
them. Banking service is a commercial service and, I think, we should move
the consumer court for such harassment. We should also demand some sort of
penalty, in the form of fine etc, from the bank. Otherwise they won't stop
treating like this.

With best regards,
Amiyo Biswas

[AI] 275 commuters booked on Central Railway for illegal travel in disabled coach

275 commuters booked on Central Railway for illegal travel in disabled coach

Apr 22, 2015, 07.27PM IST TNN[ Nitasha Natu ]

After frequent complaints from disabled commuters, the RPF had started a
full-fledged campaign to evict illegal travellers. They formed eight special
squads called 'Samvedna teams' for the purpose.

MUMBAI: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), on Wednesday, booked 275
passengers for illegally travelling in compartments reserved for the
disabled on Central Railway (CR) trains. Rs 95, 940 was collected in fines
from them.

After frequent complaints from disabled commuters, the RPF had started a
full-fledged campaign to evict illegal travellers. They formed eight special
squads called 'Samvedna teams' for the purpose. The Samvedna teams are
posted in vulnerable sections of CR in peak hours to prevent illegal
travellers from getting into coaches reserved for the disabled. They
comprise 10 to 12 jawans, including female personnel.

Our teams have been cracking down on trains at Dadar, Kurla, Ghatkopar,
Thane, Dombivali, Kalyan and Badlapur stations. Staffers from the commercial
department assist the RPF staff in the drive and fines are collected from
the offenders on the spot, said a senior RPF official. Cases are made under
section 155 of the Indian Railways Act.

In the past, plainclothed personnel from the city police as well as the
railway police have been found travelling in coaches reserved for the
disabled. Activists said these cops bully disabled commuters and block the
entrance to the coach. In several instances, disabled commuters have fallen
off trains while unsuccessfully trying to enter coaches.

The top brass of the city police had issued instructions that cops found
travelling illegally in this manner would have to face serious consequences

Regards,

Shiv

George,

There are two parts to the problem. Yes, websites should be accessible with
all
screen readers. However, many people forget is that screen readers follow a
development curve like any other product. Some of them have been tardy when

  Hello,

A visually impaired woman, a teacher at a primary school at a village,
had a joint salary account with her mother. Recently her mother died. The
branch manager refused to pay her salary etc from her account as, according
to the manager, she must have a legal guardian to operate the account.

She finally managed to open another salary account with another bank in
her locality. But her last month's salary is still in the said account
which the manager is not allowing her to withdraw.

Otherwise they won't stop
 treating like this.

this type of cases have also happened to one of my friend in Allahabad
Bank, timarpur branch in Delhi when myself some other blind friends
approached the manager described about the RBI guidelines then the
manager agreed paid salary to the blind person without any sighted
gardian. the main arguement these managers tell is blind persons
cannot recognise the notes count their cash withdrawed from our bank
so we tell them to bring any sighted persons who is above 12 years to
count the notes.

Is it possible for any developer to test accessibility with each and
every screen reader? At the most, we can ask for compliance with w3c
guidelines. And its up to the screen readers to be able to do their
job once these guidelines are complied with.

Just to boost up NVDA further, employees of a few Indian banks have
reported NVDA has better accessibility with internal applications(most
of them being web pages) when compared to Jaws.

I think its the TTS issue which makes people remain with Jaws.

However, I experienced it today.

JAWS was not reading a clickable region below retail option on
www.yesbank.in

It led me to take up the matter with Yes Bank IT department, but as it
turned out to be, NVDA worked and due to JAWS inability I was
quarrelling with the Yes bank.

NVDA was also helpful when JAWS was not reading any calendar dates
earlier.

Why one should pay so much for JAWS when a freeware can do a better
job. I only wish that NVDA was as smooth JAWS after installation or at
least ideal settings were shared with the users.

hi,
In my opinion it is not the issue of TTS for stickiness to Jaws.

Is it possible for any developer to test accessibility with each and

I never received most ideal settings file till Bhavya helped me with
it. There is also a tts issue.
I don't think i am still comfortable at all with it on excel, though
it is great online.

But hat's off to those guys who are working hard on it. And it can be
seen.

I am making a payment of Rs. 1000 to them. It won't fetch them
anything much. But it would boost their confidence.

Cheers NVDA

[AI] Bank Managers Going Mad.

2015-04-22 Thread Amiyo Biswas
Hello,

A visually impaired woman, a teacher at a primary school at a village, had a
joint salary account with her mother. Recently her mother died. The branch
manager refused to pay her salary etc from her account as, according to the
manager, she must have a legal guardian to operate the account.

She finally managed to open another salary account with another bank in her
locality. But her last month's salary is still in the said account which the
manager is not allowing her to withdraw.

I have asked her to immediately complain to the zonal office. Maybe her problem
will be solved. But I wonder how long the bank officials will consider
themselves guardians of the visually impaired and keep harassing them. Banking
service is a commercial service and, I think, we should move the consumer court
for such harassment. We should also demand some sort of penalty, in the form of
fine etc, from the bank. Otherwise they won't stop treating like this.

With best regards,

[AI] Nagpur kids design wheelchair that can climb stairs

2015-04-22 Thread Kotian, H P
All
Copying a post which did not get on the list.
Harish Kotian

Quoting:

Nagpur kids design wheelchair that can climb stairs
Apr 23, 2015, 03.24AM IST TNN
NAGPUR: Public buildings and spaces in India are long way from being barrier
free, a condition essential to allow physically challenged people to move
around. To overcome the problem, four students from the Institute for
Technology and Management (ITM), Kamptee, have built a stair climbing
wheelchair. They did so as a part of their third year research and development
project. These mechanical engineering students - Mayur Shewali, Garima Gupta,
Anubhav Choudhrai and Dippeksha Rane - are hoping to soon receive funds to make
their project more effective and usable.

Our wheelchair is working perfectly but since we were facing a financial
crunch, we were only able to make a miniature version that can take up to 40
kgs, said Mayur. Such chair climbing wheelchairs are very expensive and have
to usually be bought from abroad since India does not have the technology to
manufacture them. From what we know, there is only one company in our country
that sells these chairs and that too is manufactured abroad. This makes it very
expensive, especially for the poor, he continued.

The group hopes to make the life of the physically challenged who cannot afford
such expensive chairs easier. If mass produced, the approximate price per unit
for the chair designed by these kids would be around Rs 25,000. It can be even
less if we remove or modify certain features such as the joystick. The chair
can be made semi-manual, allowing the price to fall at least by another Rs
6,000, said Shewali.

The price can also rise if customers wish to add features such as gesture
recognition that can let the user control the chair through hand gestures. It
is also adjustable making it easier to pack along with luggage.

These final year students hope that by introducing this technology they will be
able to help half a lakh physically challenged people and be able to make their
life more meaningful.

How it functions

Rather than wheels, this wheelchair has caterpillar tracks which can be seen on
a much larger scale in tanks. It consists of small, electrically powered wheels
which move a track made up of a profile belt. This causes the wheelchair to
ride along the moving track, just like the wheels in a car run along the road.
These belts are put onto the chair at a 40 degree angle which is the usual
degree at which staircases are built, this allows the user to climb the
staircase. But, the degree at which the belts are is also adjustable through a
slot if and when required by the user.

In a nutshell

* Made within country contributing to the Indian economy

* Wheelchairs can climb stairs where ramps are absent

* Cheaper cost and hence cheaper to buy for the poor

* Can also overcome other obstacles such as bumpy roads

* Helping handicapped live fuller, richer and more normal lifestyles

[AI] NGOs: the good, bad and the ugly

Since many of our friends lives revolve through how NGOs serve them,
this article is worth-reading and deserves respectful discussion

need guidance how to go forward in 21st century? I think they should
engage with academia and the beneficiaries regularly. Disability
researchers,NGOs and the government 3some should work in tendom!

With Greenpeace and various non-profits under the scanner, it is time

In Sheraton hotels in scattered nations, We damn multinational
corporations; Injustice seems so easy to protest,

In such seething hotbeds of social rest.

('The Development Set', Ross Coggins, 1976)

The newest remix of Ross Coggins' poem has come from none other than
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he commented about five-star
activists in an address early this month to the judiciary. The
difference is, Ross Coggins was an insider who wrote a scathing satire
on social service workers who travel from rich countries to save the
developing world -- although we move with the better classes, / Our
thoughts are always with the masses. Mr. Modi, far from having any
intention of guiding India's non-profits or holding a mirror up to
them, seems to have simply anointed himself as a rating agency for the
voluntary sector. However, in the background of the heightened
scrutiny of NGOs, coming in the wake of the protests against nuclear
power plants and mining operations, Mr. Modi's jibe is more than just
an outlier.

The uproar around NGOs today is an opportune moment for the government
and the voluntary sector to work together to clean up their act. It is
time to again broach the idea of a national accreditation agency for
non-profits. The erstwhile Planning Commission had built the
groundwork for this in the National Policy on the Voluntary Sector
2007 and had come up with a set of guidelines set forth in the
Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans for the sector. Although the
policies were not ultimately adopted, the directions were arrived at
after extensive consultations with multiple stakeholders and they
reflected a positive and collaborative spirit. Most importantly, they
were founded in recognition of the nuances underlying the sector and
the evolving dynamics of its relationship with society and with
government.

The first move was to shelve the idea of importing rankings because
the Indian voluntary sector is neither as single-purposed as the hotel
industry nor as amenable to hierarchical gradation as the military,
two spheres where ratings are dominant. The voluntary sector in India
is diverse in purpose, nature and approach. As rating agencies would
admit, standardised measurement methodologies for social sector
organisations are still an emerging field and comparisons across
sub-sectors would be bananas and limes, far less apples and oranges.

However, intermediary organisations such as rating agencies could
definitely be beneficial in building a robust voluntary sector, where
the link between performance and incentives is not always holy.

The experience of rating agencies across the world reveals that
ratings (alphabets or stars) are helpful, especially to donors, in
reducing transaction costs, while making investment decisions based on
financial health, to check compliance of statutory norms, etc. This
has been found to work especially well with certain sub-sectors such
as commercial microfinance but not as well for agencies with multiple
bottom-lines, intangible results, or whose primary purpose is to hold
the state accountable. These are exactly the non-profit organisations
about whom self-serving perceptions are formed and which are
exploited, when needed, with a political vendetta. It was, therefore,
rightly decided that ratings could not be a stand-alone solution to
build credibility or assess non-profits.

Accreditation could work

The second move was to acknowledge that accreditation could be a
win-win starting point and that mainstreaming this would be a logical
step to take. Accreditation is the process of certifying voluntary
organisations based on a set of agreed and codified norms, principles,
standards and practices.

Why would any VI say ‘no’ to it sir. But I can’t see screen readers
specially JAWS is moving along with new operating systems and web
technologies.
If NVDA can do a certain job, JAWS must do it too, as it is a paid software.

And not just me, but VI acquaintances have been saying that JAWS is
becoming worse.
Instead of providing more accessibility, they feel more let down by
JAWS now days.

And it is surprising to see free packages like NVDA providing
solutions for it. Earlier, i used to feel JAWS having resources at
hand can’t do something then no screen reader would be able to do it,
but freewares are giving very good competition.

I would pull back my investments from Freedom Scientific if I had any)

I take pain to write these things while at work, because I feel
frustrated getting stuck in work due to JAWS issues and I know as more
and more people will use NVDA it will keep getting better.
MS has played its own part to make things worse for us. I used to find
computers more accessible earlier than today. Really!!

Regards Sir,
Ekinath

replacing them with nothing. But 400 odd still remain.

Now i could press control+shift+o and delete one by one by opening

Please suggest some direct method like that of replace to remove all

I tried VBA code but may be i am not doing it properly. Google uncle

While perhaps what you say is true. Websites should be accessible with all
screen readers don't you think?

Subject: [AI] NVDA better again

NVDA was also helpful when JAWS was not reading any calendar dates earlier.

Why one should pay so much for JAWS when a freeware can do a better
job. I only wish that NVDA was as smooth JAWS after installation or at
least ideal settings were shared with the users.
