[AI] More to it than meets the eye? Poona Blind Men’s Association under scanner

2015-05-06 Thread avinash shahi
So another NGO is under the scanner

When I went to Pune in Feb/March to take part in one legal orientation
conference organized by ILS college and Sabitribai Fule University, I
heard this man Mr Panda. His understanding about the disability and
how to fight for the rights of the disabled is utterly misplaced. He
continued speaking for more than half an hour and spoke no substance.
Anyway, if this association has constructed hospital instead of
housing colony, there should be strong action against the NGO.
http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/more-to-it-than-meets-the-eye-poona-blind-mens-association-under-scanner/2/

Almost 24 years after a plot was sanctioned to the Poona Blind Men’s
Association (PBMA) for a primary health centre, as well as to build a
residential facility for the visually impaired, a notice has been
issued by the district collectorate to the PBMA after a group
representing the visually impaired alleged that there was violation of
land use. The case before the Pune District collector will be heard on
May 11.

In a complaint registered by Anil Khurana and others, it has been
alleged that the land in Sector 93/2 in Mauje Mohammadwadi, measuring
two hectares awarded to the PBMA, was for residential purpose but it
had been operating a commercial hospital on the plot. The Haveli
tehsil office has given a report of “violation of land use”.

A notice issued by the Haveli tehsil office stated that after
reviewing the site, it was seen that the present area housed the HV
Desai hospital with a huge parking lot. The details given in the note
of the tehsil office stated that there were three buildings in the
area, besides the parking space.

The collectorate has stated that despite sending several letters
asking for the building permissions, the PBMA had not replied. The
circle officer, however, in his report, after inspecting the site and
the buildings, reported that the buildings were constructed in 2004
and registered under charity commissioner office.

Khurana, who is partially visually impaired, said he had approached
the revenue minister, apart from visiting the collectorate’s office,
on the issue. “With a huge population of visually impaired living and
begging on streets and sleeping on railway platforms, it is imperative
to provide them accommodation. When land was allotted, the order
clearly stated that it was granted by the collector S D to the Poona
Blind Men’s Association in 1991 for the purpose of construction of
building blind men’s residential buildings, primary health centre and
its ancillary activities free of occupancy price and free of revenue.
The terms and conditions clearly mentioned that the land should be
fully used for the purpose for which it was granted within a period of
two years,’’ said Khurana, who staged several protest against the
alleged misuse of land.

His colleague, Ramchandra Rangole, said, “The hospital is being used
for commercial purposes and not for what it was meant for. After
several meetings, the district administration accepted that there is
misuse and the hearing for the same is to be conducted. We were issued
a date of May 5 but it was later postponed to May 11.”

PBMA president N P Pandya, however, said the demand to have a housing
colony for the blind was not practical as it would isolate the
visually impaired. “If there are 5,000 people, we cannot have a
separate colony for them,’’ he said, stating that they had taken all
the necessary permissions and would put forward their case on the day
of hearing. “We have an eye hospital where people from across the
state visit. Several operations are conducted for free. A few people
with vested interest are levelling such baseless allegations,’’ he
said when asked about the alleged misuse of land. He added that at
present they had already built 1.10 lakh sq ft with three buildings
and were on an expansion mode. “We will require more land for our work
and will put forward the request during the hearing on May 11,’’
Pandya added.

[AI] VISUALLY IMPAIRED RAPED, CASE FILED AFTER COURT'S ORDER

2015-05-06 Thread avinash shahi
Why this much delay? its because she had no support from the
government and the NGOs either. One could keep on harping on
services, however violation of rights are hardly taken up by the funded
well-wishers. I've been advocating for long for advocacy in matters of
sexual assault cases but no one is willing to come up.

Hi,
Sonu Sir,
The primary extensive documentation in textual form is the NVDA User
Guide itself. If you have an copy of NVDA, you can directly access the
User Guide by going to NVDA Menu > Help submenu > User Guide.
The Commands Quick Reference, available in the Help submenu as well,
gives you a brief overview of the basic key commands used in NVDA.
Joseph Lee's recent audio tutorial series, about which I recently
forwarded the official announcement, isn't yet available in textual
form. I may be collaborating with him for the conversion process, but,
regardless, the transcription process will take quite long.
In the meanwhile, many other links to textual documentation and
resources aiding in NVDA's usage can be found here:
http://community.nvda-project.org/wiki/Guides
Thanks.

[AI] Nagpur boy to showcase invention at US science fair

2015-05-06 Thread Divyanshu Ganatra
hmm .. i wonder why i will wear another device that will read out text
for me? that too a ugly contraption on my head and pay twenty thousand
for the same. maybe someone needs to point this lad to stuff on
android and Iphone in perticular. i wonder sometimes if they ever
have spoken to a blind tech user to get feedback. this is not to take
away from the fact that a young boy has gone ahead and made something,
he believes will be of use to our community.

Nagpur boy to showcase invention at US science fair A Class IX student from
Nagpur is among 12 outstanding pre-college innovators from India who have
been invited to showcase their innovations at the Intel International
Science Engineering Fair to be held at Pittsburgh in the US from May 10.

Aditya Bhople from Narayana Vidyalay has developed a device called
Autoreader that can identify and read any text for a visually impaired
person. According to Aditya, this could be one-of-a-kind device in the
world.

“There are some devices that need a constant power supply and are immobile.
Mine is a wearable device which runs on a lithium battery, helping the user
to be mobile and use it anywhere he goes,” he says.

The band-like device is fitted with a camera in the front and a processing
unit at the back and can be worn on the head. The camera captures the
images in the front while the processing unit distinguishes the textual
matter from other things and reads it out for the user.

Says Aditya: “I have been following electronics ever since I was in Class
II. There are 285 million visually impaired people in the world, with 90
per cent of them so poor that they can’t afford assisting devices costing
thousands of dollars. Last year, I thought I would make a reading device
for them, which is not available at this point of time. Working on it since
June 2014, I have been able to make one in a few months and was chosen
among the 12 finalists from over 90 entries from across the country.”
Aditya developed the device at a cost of Rs 20,000, but says it could cost
less than Rs 5,000 if manufactured on a large scale.

Aditya has applied for a patent at the Nagpur patent office and is hoping
to get it for the Autoreader soon.

Explaining how the device works, he says, “I have employed what is known as
text algorithm in my processing unit to extract only the text in front of
the camera. It is preceded by identification of letters by what is known as
visual processing algorithm. The text, thus isolated by these processes
from the details of the image captured by the camera, is then converted
into speech by text-to-speech engine.”

Aditya acknowledges that his device is currently able to read text with a
font size of only 22 points and above. “I am working on it further to
enable to read fine print,” he adds.

The advantage of Aditya’s device is that it does not require internet
connection for text-to-speech synthesis. Aditya learnt C programming as
early as in Class IV, quickly graduating to JAVA and BASH. He was
encouraged and help by his uncle Sunil Khajone, a senior design engineer
with Qualcomm in the US.

Hello everybody,

I wrote some days back about a vi lady being denied access to her bank
acount by the bank following her mother's death. I am happy to inform you
that the problem has been solved. It was Allahabad Bank. As soon as I came
to know of the bank's name, I contacted Himansu Sahu of our list. He is also
the Secretary of Visually Impaired Bank Employees Association. He
immediately took up the issue with Allahabad Bank. Luckily it is his
employer also. He made some phone calls and finally yesterday the vi
customer got her money transferred to her new salary account.

I am glad that we have helped someone from the list and, of course, thanks

Dear Amiyo,

I read your e-mail saying "joined salary account with her mother". In
that case if the mandate given is "E or S" (either or surviver), she
has all the rights to operate the account independently without the
intervention of a legal guardian. If this basic banking facility is
denied by the bank officials, the same has to be taken up with the
regional/circle/zonal office of that bank in writing. Only then we can
bring awareness about the right of visually challenged persons to the
banking facilities among the bankers. Would like to know the bank name
and the branch name.

 Hello,

A visually impaired woman, a teacher at a primary school at a
village,

had a joint salary account with her mother. Recently her mother died.
The
branch manager refused to pay her salary etc from her account as,
according
to the manager, she must have a legal guardian to operate the
account.

She finally managed to open another salary account with another bank
in
her locality. But her last month's salary is still in the said
account

which the manager is not allowing her to withdraw.

I have asked her to immediately complain to the zonal office. Maybe
her

problem will be solved. But I wonder how long the bank officials will
consider themselves guardians of the visually impaired and keep
harassing
them. Banking service is a commercial service and, I think, we should
move
the consumer court for such harassment. We should also demand some

[AI] FW: Human bat uses echoes and sounds to see the world

2015-05-06 Thread raaju

Hi All,

For your information. Appended is today's article from the New Scientist,
on echolocation.

Peter

Seeing with Sound - The vOICe
http://www.seeingwithsound.com/winvoice.htm

Human bat uses echoes and sounds to see the world .

By Clare Wilson, May 6, 2015.

WHAT is it like to be a bat? It's a question philosophers interested in
consciousness like to ponder. Yet a few people already have something of a bat's
world view.

Brian Borowski, a 59-year-old Canadian who was born blind, began teaching
himself to echolocate aged 3. He clicks with his tongue or snaps his fingers as
he moves about, unconsciously decoding the echoes. Although many blind people
get information from sounds around them, few turn this into a supersense by
making sounds to help themselves get around.

"When I'm walking down a sidewalk and I pass trees, I can hear the tree: the
vertical trunk of the tree and maybe the branches above me," says Borowski. "I
can hear a person in front of me and go around them."

Borowski, who works as a programmer at Western University in London, Ontario,
suspects he experiences "images" in a similar way to people who can see, just
with less detail. "I store maps of information in my head and I compare what I
have in my memory with what I'm hearing around me," he says. "I am matching
images of some sort." This probably isn't too far from the truth – we know from
brain scans of Borowski and another echolocator that the strategy co-opts the
same parts of the brain that usually deal with visual information.

For his latest scientific collaboration, he helped a team of researchers to
explore how well echolocators can determine the relative sizes and distances of
objects. Sighted people normally have no problem knowing whether objects appear
small because they are far away or because they are actually small – yet both
something small and nearby or large and distant would occupy the same area and
angle in our field of view. "It's not a trivial thing," says team member Lore
Thaler, at Durham University, UK. "But we don't think about it." So is it also
easy for echolocators? You might think so, but previous work has suggested that
echolocating bats sometimes struggle.

Borowski, however, aced the tests, consistently identifying the true size of a
range of objects placed at different distances. In contrast, 20 blind or
blindfolded people who had no experience with echolocation floundered when asked
to give it a try (Neurocase, doi.org/38g).

As for how he does it, Thaler points out that theoretically, echoes contain
intrinsic information about the source's distance as well as its size, taking
longer to return from far-away objects. But Borowski feels he's using a
different strategy. "If you're close to something, you hear a higher resolution.
You get more detail," he says.

Human echolocation has attracted great interest since the late 2000s, when
Californian Daniel Kish came to wide attention. Yet his organisation, World
Access for the Blind, is still the only one that teaches the skill to others,
and it is not generally taught to blind children in schools. Tom Pey of the
Royal London Society for Blind People points out that most people who are blind
or partially sighted lose their sight in later life, when their hearing might
also be on the wane.

Thaler admits that echolocation has some drawbacks – it's not very good for
detecting obstacles on the ground – but she is convinced it should be taught,
and is currently helping Durham County Council to provide workshops. "It doesn't
solve everything but it definitely gives additional information," she says.
"It's an amazing example of brain plasticity."

This article appeared in print under the headline "The man who sees with sound".

How i learned to echolocate.

Click here to read a longer version of this interview
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn27474-how-i-learned-to-navigate-using-my-bat-supersense.html

Once, when my parents were putting metal stakes into the ground, my brother –
who is also blind – and I noticed that when they were banged with a hammer, the
echoes bouncing off the house were really strong. We realised we could use that.

Playing games like hide-and-seek with our sighted brother honed our skills. His
idea of hiding from us was standing in the middle of the lawn. At first we
couldn't find where he was, but as we got better at echolocating, he had to hide
behind trees. We soon learned to find him there too.

Once we'd mastered the skill, we taught ourselves how to ride bikes. We didn't
just use echolocation, but other things too to keep track of where we were: the
slope of the road, whether the gravel was loose or well-packed. But we would
always be clicking, listening for the grass growing at the side of the road, or
for the turning into our driveway.

We never had any formal training. Our teachers thought it wasn't a good thing to
do. They said blind people have enough trouble fitting into society and you
shouldn't do anything that

Re: [AI] NVDA lags on Windows 7

2015-05-06 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,
Dinesh Sir,
I doubt if anti virus programs could cause a constantly noticeable lag
in NVDA's performance. If this were so, all programs apart from NVDA
too would be affected.
The keystroke NVDA + V toggles on and off if the screen layout is
preserved while rendering the document content (Input Help mode
message). An ideal preference would be simple layout, and in
particular cases screen layout is beneficial.
The second feature request expressed by Shankar Sir is the wrapping to
top functionality that allows JAWS to move to the first element when
there exists no next element. The NVDA developers are unwilling to
allow its implementation, and, in my experience, one can get
accustomed easily to this feature's absence.
Amar,
Regarding the constant and conspicuous delay in NVDA, lets leave that
part to our talk on the phone.
Thanks.

hello
gretings
as for my understanding, you are using jaws 16 32 bit with windows 7
if this is the case, please install the file called, install_ca.bat
so that, your jaws will run automatically

do the following
1. go to the folder, where you downloaded the scripts
2. place the cursore on the scripts
3. unzip the files
4. copy the scripts from the unzipped folder
5. go to C:\Users\admin\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\16.0\Settings\enu
and paste it them
and restart it, the scripts might get work
if u r facing the issues, kindly let me know

Re: [AI] (no subject)

2015-05-06 Thread SKYLINER
Hi.

I am also NVDA staunch user by virtue of its rather easy accessibility & switch
over to Hindi, etc.

It works very well here on window 7 & so on. Only difficulty I am yet to
overcome with NVDA is its non use of JAWS & ROUTE TO JAWS CURSORS, its tough
behaviour in edit fields where it would move not beyond the box& read the heads
to be filled in. May be, one could suggest me their solutions as I have not
much read NVDA audios on its functions.

Hello Amar,

I don't think RAM is an issue here.
Just to let you know, I am using windows 8.1 on a laptop with Intel Core 2
duo 2.0 GHZ Processor, with 2 GB RAM.
And NVDA Still works very well without any lag.

Warm Regards.

Subject: [AI] NVDA lags on Windows 7

Dear All,

I have been a Jaws user since Jaws 3.7 was out in the market. However,
the basic things being broken down with each update of Jaws, and the
changes in the support strategies for international users of
Freedomscientific, I have no option but to equip myself with the
necessary skills to use NVDA efficiently.

Thanks to the user guide and the audio tutorial (the only one I heard
was that about cursers and object navigation), the migration has been
easy so far.

Query: the only problem I am facing is the noticeable lag with NVDA
while typing or navigating using keyboard.

To give an example, if I am on any browser (I know Firefox is better
supported here), and I do a google search or open the user guide of
NVDA, and if I jump by headings, while my key press may be 3 or 4
times, NVDA will be stuck on the first key press and there will be a
noticeable delay for it to come up to the heading after last key
press.

I am using NVDA 2015.1 with ESpeak, on Windows 7 Pro with all latest
updates. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300U CPU @ 1.90GHz 2.50
GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.42 GB usable)

What do you think can be the cause and the solution for the same?
Is the fact that it is running on Pithon and not on C++ or other
languages due to which NVDA may require better ram and processor a
problem?

Any response will be highly appreciated.

Regards,

[AI] NVDA lags on Windows 7

2015-05-06 Thread Amar Jain

Regards,
--
Amar Jain.
