[AI] Is there any feature phone with speaking clock?

2023-03-21 Thread Kakarla Nageswaraiah
Dear all,
One of my friends wants a feature phone with speaking clock. The
phone should announce the time at the press of a button.
Once we had Nokia phones which would announce the time in English or
Indian languages.
Kindly let me know in detail whether any such feature phones are
available in the market at present.
Thanks and regards.

RE: [AI] Issues with UDID

2023-03-21 Thread George Abraham
I had downloaded , printed and laminated the UDID card in Feb 2022. I have not
yet received the printed card that was sent to me by post in May 2022. Have
also managed to download the UDID card onto my Digi Locker. I wonder whether it
is necessary to have the printed card that the Govt mails.

Hi Pranav

Certainly, the portal needs to be fully accessible. This also includes error
messages. Check on the file size to upload. Perhaps the portal would be having
some issue then.

I had applied for UDID long back. It kept on showing the status referred to
district hospital. Last friday I visited the civil hospital and the doctors
uploaded the requisite data.

On Monday the status showed processing for printing. On login, I could download
the card.

The process certainly is made simple now.

I strongly support the step to make UDID mandatory, as it will help in
removing the unwanted beneficiaries out of the system, like how the
linking of DBT with aadhaar helped in removing lakhs of fraudulent
beneficiaries.
It may also curb to an extent the problem of low vision people
pretending to be totally blind.
That said, we must also hold a dialogue with the department of persons
with disabilities and suggest them measures to expedite the process of
making UDID easily available and accessible to all.
One way could be to rope in the NGO's working at the ground level
especially in the rural areas for organising camps for mass
enrollment.
Another way could be to advertise about UDID far and wide on various
channels of mass communication such as radio stations, TV channels,
newspapers etc like how other schemes are publicised.
Also, various schools/centres catering to the educational needs of the
disabled can be requested to collate the data and help the
students/trainees to apply.
Similarly, the local bodies such as the panchayats and municipalities
can also be made co-partners.
Making UDID mandatory becomes necessary as without the need, nobody cares.

 Hi,

I do not understand why you are refused Aadhar Card because your retina
can't be scanned. In fact, there is a provision in the Aadhar software
itself to exclude IRIS scan for VI persons.

Try visiting some another enrolment center and i am sure you will
 succeed

I have observed that the agents are neither properly trained nor
 educated
 to handel special cases.

2023-03-21 Thread Suresh Kumar M
Dear friends

Request to please share the circular about the benefits for persons with
disability on any taxes at the time of registered vehicle registration
I don’t have the circular with me but shared their newspaper links with the
RTO people and I got the response saying this benefit is only for persons
with physical disability and they are not ready to encourage to register
the vehicle under Divyang schemes for me as I am a person with vision
impaired meant

I can approach the RTO once again, if I can get the circular

Re: [AI] Issues with UDID

2023-03-21 Thread pavan kallem
Dear all,
I am writing this email in response to the ongoing discussions
regarding the implementation of UDID (Unique Disability ID) for
availing benefits for the disabled community from the central
government.
While I support the idea of UDID, I am concerned about the process and
the difficulties that people with disabilities are facing during the
implementation process. It has come to my notice that the process is
becoming more cumbersome in non-BJP ruled states like Telangana, where
a separate software authenticated mechanism called SADAREM is being
followed, which is causing inconvenience to people with disabilities.
I would also like to bring to your attention the contradictory
guidelines issued by the Union of India, where the government has
issued forms 4, 5, and 6 for application, permanent disability, and
multiple disabilities, respectively. However, the notification under
rule 19 clearly states that a person to whom the certificate is issued
under rule 18 shall be entitled to apply for facilities, concessions,
and benefits admissible for persons with disabilities under schemes of
the government and non-governmental organizations funded by the
government.
Moreover, I have learned that the government is mandating UDID cards,
which have not been mentioned in the primary act, nor have they been
mentioned in the rules issued under it. As a certified permanent
disability community member, I feel that the government is
superimposing something that is not a well-thought-out plan and does
not serve the purpose for which it has been brought.
Therefore, I urge the government to firstly ensure that every person
with disability gets a UDID card and secondly, to remove the
contradictory notifications that are causing confusion among the
disabled community. The government should consider every process that
it mandates, and it should not be a burden for people with
disabilities.
If someone is ready to help me get a UDID card, please contact me at
the number provided below.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

absolutely, secondly, it is required to upload data or verification from
the same hospital where a person got disability certificate. Once I have
got disability certificate from district medical board then why it is
necessary for me to approach the same hospital for uploading data or
online verification? as the act says that medical board certificate
fulfill the purpose. and what for those who are having permanent
disability certificate got 10-15 years back. will it become invalid?

this cumpulsion means that I am not blind despite having medical board
certificate until or unless i get UDID card.

Dear all,
I am writing this email in response to the ongoing discussions
regarding the implementation of UDID (Unique Disability ID) for
availing benefits for the disabled community from the central
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

whether it is necessary to have the printed card that the Govt mails.

Hi Pranav

Certainly, the portal needs to be fully accessible. This also includes error
messages. Check on the file size to upload. Perhaps the portal would be
having some issue then.

I had applied for UDID long back. It kept on showing the status referred to
district hospital. Last friday I visited the civil hospital and the doctors
uploaded the requisite data.

On Monday the status showed processing for printing. On login, I could
download the card.

The process certainly is made simple now.

pretending to be totally blind.
That said, we must also hold a dialogue with the department of persons

making UDID easily available and accessible to all.
One way could be to rope in the NGO's working at the ground level

Hi,
Generally to download any document to DigiLocker, you have to login to
your DigiLocker app. Then you have to search the document on the basis
of the issuer and then fetch the document using identifiers like
certificate number or email id or mobile number.

What is the objective of the blind car onor group? My RC is not in
divyang catagory and I don't even wish to alter my RC from RTO either.
I don't avail any exemption from toll tax. How that group will serve

[AI] RAJESH GOLANI and RAJENDRAN NARAYANAN write in The Hindu: Discrimination in the IITs is something to write about

2023-03-21 Thread avinash shahi
‘What merit completely fails to account for are the starting points,
the trajectories, the social networks, the affluence, the prejudices,
hardships and innumerable other factors that shape us’ | Photo Credit:
EMMANUAL YOGINI
https://www.thehindu.com/opinion/lead/discrimination-in-the-iits-is-something-to-write-about/article66646925.ece
Darshan Solanki, an undergraduate student of chemical engineering at
the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, ended his life on
February 12, 2023. He was a Dalit. The institute formed a 12-member
committee to conduct an investigation, which submitted its report on
March 2. The report said, “It appears from the marks obtained in
various courses that the performance of Darshan Solanki deteriorated
specifically in the second half of the autumn semester. His
deteriorating academic performance could have affected him seriously.”
The report further said: “Other than the statement of Darshan’s
sister, there is no specific evidence of direct caste-based
discrimination faced by him during his stay at IIT Bombay.”

A continuous process
Unlike the hard sciences, establishing causal links of discrimination
is challenging. However, the lack of tools to establish causality does
not negate the presence of discrimination. In thinking about
marginalisation, the tendency is to sympathise with the most
victimised. While that is understandable, it should not dilute the
many forms of discrimination. What is needed is not sympathy or
band-aid empathy for the most victimised but a constant engagement
with the politics of assertion because discrimination is not
necessarily a one-off, high-pitched melodramatic event of hurling
abuses at somebody. It is a layered and continuous process that
happens through everyday doses, steadily creating an atmosphere of
“us” and “them”. It takes subtle, seemingly innocuous forms such as a
smile combined with a frown, a wince, a hand gesture, or just silence.
And, a discussion on discrimination at the IITs needs to be predicated
on a discussion on merit as it is the embedded idea of merit that
gives licence to discriminate.

The political philosopher, Michael Sandel, in the book, The Tyranny of
Merit, presents a scathing critique of meritocracy as a societal ideal
and argues how hubris among the elites and a politics of humiliation
are natural outcomes of meritocracy. This is not to suggest that every
upper-caste student at the IITs discriminates or that every
lower-caste student feels victimised. However, some upper-caste
students at the IITs, knowingly or unknowingly, embody what Sandel
calls “credentialist prejudice” as symptomatic of meritocratic
arrogance. This happens, when elites tend to “look down on those who
do not rise”. Such an approach “undermines social recognition and
esteem for those who lack the credentials the system rewards”.

Variations of graded inequality and, consequently, discriminatory
judgements about one’s so-called abilities are deeply entrenched
within the veneer of merit at the IITs.

On campus
Soon after one enters IIT campuses, one steps into well-demarcated
zones of hierarchy. The first level of hierarchy is whether you are an
undergraduate or a postgraduate student. Intermingling of these two
cohorts was an exception than the norm as undergraduates tended to
feel superior to postgraduates. For undergraduates, one’s abilities
are immediately tattooed in the minds of everyone based on one’s rank
in the entrance exams. Much like the accident of birth, one’s branch
of studies is an accident of one’s rank. This then becomes the unique
identifier of this phantom called merit; then, slowly, the lines
between being objective and objectifying get blurred.

The accident of the branch of studies results in disinterest and
disillusionment among some students. But it plays out differently
among students across caste. On average, for some upper-caste
disinterested students, it becomes an opportunity to explore other
facets, which then acts as a justification for bad academic
performance in college. There is usually an implicit confidence among
such students that they could be bailed out when needed, owing to
their family connections, affluence, cultural capital or social
networks with ‘successful’ people. These act as cushions for them to
take risks in college. Think of how and whom you would refer for a job
in your company where you get a referral bonus.
ch not of their choice, they do not have the luxury to explore or take
the same kind of risks as their upper-caste counterparts. More often,
they lack similar connections, affluence or cultural capital as their
upper-caste friends. An apprehension of being stigmatised for bad
academic performance tends to amplify their anxiety and pressure. What
these imply is that even the freedom to take chances is implicitly
conditioned on one’s rank and caste location. The buoyancy of youth is
not equal for everyone. What merit completely fails to account for are
the starting points, the trajectori

Re: [AI] Regarding accessibility of kindle devices and content

2023-03-21 Thread Aparna Sachdev
Hello
I've also been considering a Kindle device off and on for a long time now,
but haven't taken the plunge yet. VoiceDream does fine for me, so far. I
had a couple of questions though, which I'd be happy to have your help with:

   - The adapter you mentioned using with your PaperWhite: what is that
like? I think of it like one of those dongles you use with wireless
keyboards - how close to the actual thing (or not!) am I with that? Is it
   convenient to keep track of?
   - In terms of granular navigation, how responsive do you find VoiceView
to be? If you're doing a read-all, for example, and you want to navigate to
a particular sentence/word and take a look at it again, is the response
time alright when you change granularity? Does it happen as quickly as you
want it to/as quickly as you can move your fingers in the required
gestures? (I've tried out VoiceView on an Echo Show, and I find it a bit
laggy. Is that true for the Kindle as well?)
   - Possibilities of an external keyboard: do they have VoiceView-specific
keyboard commands, if you were to connect an external keyboard to the
Kindle? Also, when you say the highlight and annotation features aren't
accessible, would that be true for an external keyboard as well (provided
there are specified keyboard commands for actions), or is it a focus issue
(i.e. VoiceView focus just doesn't go to those options)?

Also, an aside to people who use VoiceDream Reader: can you get highlights
and annotations to work with VoiceOver? From what I remember reading, that
functionality isn't available to VoiceOver users because text selection
doesn't work as expected within the app, and there are no app-specific
gestures for that either. Please correct me if I'm wrong - I'd really like
to be wrong here. Do let me know if there's any way to highlight and/or
annotate things.

Thanks in advance, Tony, and I look forward to responses from others as
well who might have anything to share.
Cheers,
Aparna
