[AI] RP/LCA coupled with Cataract

2015-08-24 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Dear friends

I was diagnosed with RP early in my childhood.
Later on it was diagnosed as LCA.
Recently for the last one-two years, there was a sudden blurness in
site, which I attributed to the degenerative retinal condition.
But recently, doctors have revealed that there is a cataract formation
in both eyes, which needs to be operated.

My question is:
1. Does cataract surgery have any impact on the existing retinal
condition? My site has remained almost static for the last 33 years
and I have not noticed any big dip in vision other than the last 1-2
years.
2. Is this surgery similar to any healthy eyed person or Are there any
specific do's and dont's to be followed for the surgery and
post-operative care for persons with pre-existing retinal issues?
3. Are there any additional tests like ERG etc. to be undertaken?
4. Has anybody from our group undergone similar condition of cataract
with LCA/RP?

Awaiting your responses.

Jairam

Recently, there have been many court judgements stating that

Wonder if anything has been mentioned explicitly in the report of the

This would be a great step for us to compete and grow up the

Re: [AI] Loans to differently abled persons will be treated as priority sector - The Economic Times

2015-03-15 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello everybody
The various categories of priority sector are as under:
(i) Agriculture
(ii) Micro and Small Enterprises
(iii) Education
(iv) Housing
(v) Export Credit
(vi) Others

The limit of loan under each category is also mentioned in the master
circular (link appended already by somebody).

Here is the classification of housing loan for priority sector since
one of our friends Mr. Ekanath had asked:
Loans to individuals up to ` 25 lakh in metropolitan centres with
population above ten lakh and ` 15 lakh in other centres for
purchase/construction of a dwelling unit per family excluding loans
sanctioned to bank’s own employees.

The category of Others contains some loans where there is a ceiling of
Rs. 50, 000.

As regards interest rates, it is to be decided by the individual banks
and only for agricultural loans, there is interest subvention
available.

Thanks and regards
Jairam

Re: [AI] New York Times: Disabled seek help to satisfy sexual desires

2015-02-24 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Friends

Somewhere in the original article, it is very rightly written that sex
with a commercial sex worker is not a very fullfilling experience for
a disabled person and that the act is over quick and fast.
I think, most of the times, for persons with disability like us, its
an urge to be accepted as who we are unconditionally and being able to
express ourselves is the main requirement.
Sadly, the social constructs around us does not even have any clue
that we are equally sexual beings and have the right to express
ourselves fully.
In our country, where sex is not legal, finding a commercial worker
itself is very risky and sometimes impossible.

Each one of us whether disabled or not have the same feelings with
respect to hunger, thirst or sex. Its absolutely fine to honour the
body's feelings
Merely brushing aside this urge on the pretext of our culture (which
no one really knows what it is) and waiting for marriage (which seems
to be a tough proposition and comes with its own associated costs and
challenges) is further eroding our consciousness.

No one needs to bother too much about culture as it is changing with
every passing generation and would take care of itself.
I wish if we also lived in an age of free sexual expression and gratification.
These are just my reflections and I am not willing to argue with
anybody in the list on what is right and wrong a acceptable social
behaviour.

Cheers
Jairam

Some time back, there was a thread on google group for blind civil
service aspirants. How to subscribe to the same and network with
others?
I also wanted to know the curret status with reference to blind
officers in the IAS or IFS or IRS.
There have been a few news items about blind collectors being posted
in MP and some north east state.
But are there significant persons with blindness in the main stream
services like IAS, IFS and IRS?
I wan to network wih the existing officers and also the aspirants.

Your guidance will be highly valuable to me.

Thanks and regards
Jairam

[AI] Need guidance in choosing between I phone 4s and I phone 5

2014-09-07 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello friends

As we all know, the prices of older models of I phone is falling
drastically as the new phone is about to be launched.
There are two choices of phones I have in I Phone 4S and 5.
I have to choose between the two.
I request you to please enable me in this regard.
What are the significant differences between 4S and 5.
Does Apple have a policy that many of the newer features would only be
available in the models after 4s?
If that be the case, the newer apps and feattures will not be available in 4S.
Again, don't know if there was significant difference in 5 and 5s/5C.

Thanks and regards

Re: [AI] Physically-challenged girl mauled to death by dogs

2014-07-23 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
I have also faced many a dog attacks on the streets especially when I
started using the cane regularly.
Think, use of the cane attracts their attention towards us and then it
becomes really tensed. Even now, this is a big deterrent for me to use
the cane.
Sometimes, there are more than two or three dogs. It is very difficult
to just stand there like a statue and let them go away.
However, due to my little site, I have instinctively tried to kick
them to death. Though this is not the best practice. If I keep
walking, they have chased or followed me for really long distances.
Without knowing how far they are behind you, it becomes really
distracting to even judge the other obstrucles and pits. It becomes
doubly dangerous as once I have almost fallen into a pit due to fear.
Yet, this threat really exists as there are dogs everywhere lying on
the pavements and pedestrian walk ways.

Guess, each blind person should only travel by a shoffer driven car
henceforth!!

[AI] Fwd: FW: Horrible experience of customer service with Indigo-Lodging of complaint

2014-07-20 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello Preeti and other friends

What a classic reply received from Indigo team. I take out an extract
from the reply received from them as:
"We would like to confirm that we do have a provision of assisting
passengers with special needs, however, we were not informed of your
travel in advance which could have assisted us in making your travel a
hassle free experience within the confines of our existing policies."

Agreed that the disability was not mentioned at the time of booking by
my agent, but at the time of reaching the airport, I had duly
mentioned about my disability at Srinagar and also Delhi.
Does this absolve the airline of its fundamental duties towards the disabled?

During the course of discussion with their representative, I was told
that same airline co-ordinates with Mumbai AAI and arranges for
airport transfer. Then the same could have been done at Delhi also,
even if it is a one-off event. A ground staff at the Delhi airport
asked me to wait and precisely tried doing this but his senior from
the other decided otherwise. So I was asked to board a shuttle to the
terminal, which they are claiming to be full compliance and service
from their end.

On reaching the terminal, no support from their staff. At least, they
could have checked in my baggage as priority (already requested at
Srinagar), given me some directions to reach the international
terminal and at least escort me till the cab service. This could have
been the least service. But they are shunning it away as they claim
that I have not informed them in advance.
I have informed their staff at Srinagar at 7.00 a.m. and reached Delhi
at 11.45 a.m. Is this not intimation in advance?

This is no reply which is acceptable, I guess!
Want to file a formal complaint now.

Dear Mr. Balasubramanian,

Greetings from IndiGo!

Thank you for taking out the time to speak to me at length, I truly
appreciate your time.

At the outset, we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to you and
your family on the 19th of June 2014 for your travel from Srinagar to
Dubai.

With reference to your email, we would like to confirm that as per
policy being followed since our inception, IndiGo does not have a
provision of through check in for passengers travelling on a
connecting flight.

As communicated to you, we would like to add here that the airport
transfer is taken care by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and is
governed by them. Airline holds no responsibility for passenger
transfer from one terminal to the other.

Further, as per our detailed investigation made with Delhi and
Srinagar airports, we would like to confirm that you were assisted
with a loader till shuttle bus counter.

We would like to confirm that we do have a provision of assisting
passengers with special needs, however, we were not informed of your
travel in advance which could have assisted us in making your travel a
hassle free experience within the confines of our existing policies.
We appreciate customers like you who let us know when things aren't
right. Your experience has been shared the Vice President- Airport
Operations and Customer Services and further the team has been
sensitized about more delicate handling of instances like these in
order to avoid recurrences.
Trust me, your feedback - whether positive or negative - makes a
difference and we thank you for sharing your views with us, as it
plays a critical role in enhancing quality of our customer service and
achieve our goal to exceed customer expectations. It will definitely
assist us in becoming better at what we do. As with any business like
ours, the greatest advertising we can have is word of mouth from a
satisfied customer.

Once again, we thank you for your valuable time that you took out to
write to us and I assure you of our best services at all times.

We look forward to assisting you with your future travel plans and
thank you for taking the time to communicate with us.

[AI] Horrible experience with Indigo airlines

2014-07-15 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello friends

I had a couple of very bad experiences with Indigo recently.
In last week of June, I travelled from Nagpur to Srinagar with my
infant son, via Delhi. (Two seperate connecting flights)
At Nagpur, they denied auto check in of baggage from Nagpur to
Srinagar. I had to get out of the aircraft, collect my baggages and
again go to the departure terminal of domestic airport.

While returning from Srinagar, I was coming to Delhi and proceeding
immediately to Dubai with the same airline (Indigo).
At Srinagar airport, the airline refused to issue me with the boarding
passes upto Dubai. I remember airlines issuing boarding passes for
onward flights as well in the past. Indigo Srinagar has also given in
writing that they will not issue boarding pass for Dubai.
Secondly, they again did not give me any auto check in of baggages.
When I landed in Delhi, they promised some ground help, but no one
came to help me from the domestic terminal to the international
terminal, which I later came to know from another passenger that it
was around 12 Kms away, and I had to take a private cab to reach by
myself. I also mentioned clearly that I am blind and have an infant
with me.
Indigo officials kept telling that they are a point to point carrier
and that they do not have any airport to airport transfer service. In
Mumbai, Jet airways provided me with internal airport transfer some
years back when I was travelling from domestic terminal to
international terminal.
Needless to mention, this caused a great deal of inconvenience and harassment.
I need some expert comments on whether I have any ground to complaint
against the airline, or the contention of the airline is final.

Thanks and regards
Jairam

Re: [AI] Preparation for Chartered Accountants: guidance needed.

2013-11-24 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello Amar

All the course materials issued by ICAI is also available in its
website in PDF format.
In papers like accounting, cost and management accounting, etc, which
involve a lot of numericals, one has to device his/her own strategy to
understand the question, and present the solution in the prescribed
format.
Assistive technologies are not permisible in ICAI examinations and a
scribe can be used.
Co-ordination with the scribe is a must for solving the numerical
questions. Recently highcourt of Delhi had given a ruling to ICAI to
maintain its own scribe list. This again is very ambiguous as one will
not have much of an interaction with the scribe before examinations.
There are classes available in all major cities and he/her can talk to
them for help in understanding of the concepts.

Another major challenge in CA is getting articleship training under a
good CA. This is
must and really adds value to the knowledge of an individual.

Finally, as a qualified CA, there are hardly anydody amongst us VIs,
who is into practice. All of us are actually into employment. Getting
a job in area of interest is also a challenging task, considering the
accessability of Talley, SAP and other tax related softwares.

You can also contact me off the list for any help.

How do we get constant update on the market movements and how our

In web sites like money control.com, the web page gets refreshed on a

Besides, are there any tools for technical analysis that are

If anybody in the list is actively investing in the markets, I would

Re: [AI] 2, 000 people with disabilities to get jobs in IT, BPO firms

2011-12-05 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
At Srinivasu

If we are talking about individual company names, one company named
Lazer soft in Chennai, claimed to have been equal opportunity company
and also that most of its employees were challenged.
The company was specialising in development of softwares for banking
space, and when I went in for interview, not a single visually
challenged person was recruited there.
After my qualification as CA in 2006, my experiences at the campus
recruitments in ICAI with companies like Goldman Sacks, BPCL, Wipro,
Infosys, L&T, etc have been clearly an evidence of the reluctance of
the HR managers to recruit visually challenged candidates.

Do we mean to say that any VI person who have'nt been able to land up
into a job into the corporate world, lacks the requisite skills, its
sheer bull shit.
Only a handfull of us, have been able to land up into good jobs, and
based on that, we can't conclude that no-one else possesses the
requisite skills. And also that , we better know how we landed up into
those jobs.
And about the skill sets, hiring a candidate from IIM or such premier
institutes does not require any great boasting up of the companies of
having been an inclusive organisation, as it constitutes only a meagre
percentage, and also that they would anyways get placed due to their
knowledge and networking.
Barring a few on this list itself, I don't think there are many of us
who are highly Tech savy or people who have total expertees in their
respective domains.
For that matter, any fresher or even experienced persons may
necessarily not be having indepth understanding of the industry as a
whole.
If our education systems are non-inclusive, then its not fair to blame
the individual for not possessing good linguistic skills, or the so
called soft skills, most of the schools being regional in nature, even
in relatively bigger cities.
Let us not generalise our ideas on the basis of a very small sample,
where the ground reality is completely different.
May be that, the so called HR managers and the top management,
comprising of the best brains from B-schools, lack the skill sets in
valuation, which they think they are good at.
Its all about finding value, and if someone is not able to find any
value in something, then its his/her incompetence as well as the
product itself.
If I have been created differently, then why I should be equated with
my non-peers and rated on the same scale. Competence/incompetence is
highly relative.

Re: [AI] Info required on accessable sites for booking flight tickets

2011-06-14 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hi Srinivasu

The callender is absolutely not accessable in make my trip.
The date fields says read only and does not allow to edit.
The callender link does not appear any where near by to this edit
field, and so one would be clueless as to how to enter the date.
After a couple or more down arrows, suddenly one can find some dates,
but only for the current month, or at best for the next month.
How to find availability for say 2-3 months by changing the month, is
not possible.

The combo boxes for selection of the from and To airports is also not
arranged in a logical manner as sometimes it appears cluttered. For
example, it says, From, To, Date, Return Date, then Combo box, Combo
box, Read only Edit, Read only Edit, etc.
It becomes difficult to understand which combo box is for what and,
which edit field is for what date.

I had never gone beyond this and do not know if there are any issues
with booking etc.

Regards
Jairam

Re: [AI] Info required on accessable sites for booking flight tickets

2011-06-13 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hi Pranay and others

Firstly, other than regular fliers, one does not know what are the
flights available for a place.
Also, how would one know the competetive pricing for the given day.
As Pranay mentioned, if one is not particular about pricing and knows
the time and the operator whom he/she intends to fly, then he can call
the company help desk.
But this is seldom possible.
Yatra.com, and Make my trip are generally used but the callender does
not seem to be accessable.

[AI] Formatting tips in MS Excel required

2011-03-20 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Dear access indians

How to do formatting of an excel sheet, so as to get a good print of the same.
Sometimes what we type, does not appear on the printed document, this
involves dragging and dropping of the cell to get the entire content.
How to know whether the entire spread sheet is coming in a print,
whether to take a print in land scape or portrait?
Is there any tip available for setting up a page for print?
How to print a spread sheet with grid lines? Sometimes the grid lines
do not appear on the printed document.

Hi Access Indians

Want to know how to add contacts in the address line or CC bar in G mail?
Earlier, if one typed a few characters of the email ID correctly, the
entire ID used to be picked up.
In case of multiple recipients, the addresses could be typed,
seperating each by a comma.
But now, this is not happening.
Could any one suggest any way out.
Its certain that one cannot mug up all the contact details.

Re: [AI] problem in my SBI account

2010-10-19 Thread Jairam Balasubramanian
Hello

Signature or thumb impression has nothing to do with clearing.
In the clearing house, only cheques are sorted bank/branch wise and
sent to the respective banks using the magnetic ink character
recognission M I C R codes in the cheque.
It is only at the branch of the drawer, that is the person who has
drawn the cheque, that the signature and other details are verified
and the cheque is passed or suitably returned to the clearing house in
case of difference in signature, insufficient funds, etc.
So if the specimen signature/LTI is available at the branch, it should
be enough.

Hello

I am not a legal expert.
But I am sure that both these deductions can be claimed as the section
80U for self handicapped and section 80DD for dependent handicapped
are two different provisions under the deductions to income tax act.
Also the person, (the assessee and his/her dependent child), for whom
the deduction is being claimed are also two different persons.

Hi Prathusha

When is your IPCC attempt? Where are you doing your articleship?
As regards the CA cariculum, the subjects financial accounting,
financial management and cost accounting, you will have to take the
help of somebody to solve the practice problems and get to know the
logic/concept and the method of approach.
For other subjects like law, audit, income tax, I T, etc, which are
mostly theoretical in nature, you could scan some recognised materials
and read the same. These are mostly memory oriented.

[AI] My feed back on the convention

Hello everybody

I would not want to take any stand and give way to any further arguements.
Of course, every one has their own thought process and way of looking at things.
But I would rather like to present the following quotes, which is an
articulation of my thoughts right now.

"There are risks and costs to a
 program of action
. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of
comfortable inaction"
." John F. Kennedy

"We are what we repeatedly do;
excellence
then, is not an act but a habit."

It was indeed an excellent show down from all concerned

Thanks everybody for giving me this wonderful opportunity to meet and

Hello Access Indians,

I know that there has been a considerable sharing of knowledge on

I am using Lotus notes in office for intra net.
I am unable to open my mails and reply.

I would briefly sum up the steps I take:
Hit enter on lotus notes
Feed my pass word and then it logs me in
There are certain items mentioned such as Mail, callender, search, etc

How to go to the relevant link or button
and How to reply for a mail received.
I went to Jaws help topic and could not make a lot out of it.
What does expand all items mean?
