Re: [AI] Android & I phone usage
Hi, I am only worried about the typing of emails and messages in touch screen phones or even tabs. Does a person develop good speed while typing on touch screen virtual key pads? Last week Friday I have seen a Chinese 7" tab with in built sim card slot which can work on 2g and 3g network. This means no additional dongle required. The importer is branding it in India and giving a 1 year warrantee and service there after. Runs on android 2.3. They will give upgrade to ICS 4.0 later if possible but not sure. The touch screen is very responsive. The brand name is Yorker and the importer is in Mumbai with service centres in Mumbai and Delhi. You can contact Mr. Niraj on 9833519187 for more details. Regards Wahid -- Forwarded message -- Gene Therapy For Inherited Blindness Succeeds In Patients' Other Eye February 10, 2012 In 3 Adults, Repeat Dose Safely Improves Vision Gene therapy for congenital blindness has taken another step forward, as researchers further improved vision in three adult patients previously treated in one eye. After receiving the same treatment in their other eye, the patients became better able to see in dim light, and two were able to navigate obstacles in low-light situations. No adverse effects occurred. Neither the first treatment nor the readministered treatment triggered an immune reaction that cancelled the benefits of the inserted genes, as has occurred in human trials of gene therapy for other diseases. The current research targeted Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a retinal disease that progresses to total blindness by adulthood. Scientists from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia led the study, published Feb 8 in Science Translational Medicine. "Patients have told us how their lives have changed since receiving gene therapy," said study co-leader Jean Bennett, M.D., Ph.D., F.M. Kirby professor of Ophthalmology at Penn. "They are able to walk around at night, go shopping for groceries and recognize people's faces-all things they couldn't do before. At the same time, we were able to objectively measure improvements in light sensitivity, side vision and other visual functions." Other objective results came from brain signals seen in neuroimaging. When a dimly flickering checkerboard pattern flashed in front of a patient's recently treated eye, an area in the brain responsible for vision lit up during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). "This finding is telling us that the brain is responding to the eye's sensitivity to dim light," said radiology researcher Manzar Ashtari, Ph.D., of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the study's co-leader. LCA is a group of hereditary retinal diseases in which a gene mutation impairs production of an enzyme essential to light receptors in the retina. The study team injected patients with a vector, a genetically engineered adeno-associated virus, which carried a normal version of a gene called RPE65 that is mutated in one form of LCA. The researchers in the current study previously carried out a clinical trial of this gene therapy in 12 patients with LCA, four of them children aged 11 and younger when they were treated. Exercising caution, the researchers treated only one eye-the one with worse vision. This trial, reported in October of 2009, achieved sustained and notable results, with six subjects improving enough to no longer be classified as legally blind. The Center for Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics (CCMT) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia sponsored both the initial clinical trial and the current study, and manufactured the vector used to carry the corrective gene. Katherine A. High, M.D., a co-author of both studies, is the director of the CCMT, and a pioneering gene therapy researcher. The research team's experiments in animals had showed that readministering treatment in a second eye was safe and effective. While these results were encouraging, the researchers were concerned that readministering the vector in the untreated eye of the patients might stimulate an inflammatory response that could reduce the initial benefits in the untreated eye. "Our concern was that the first treatment might cause a vaccine-like immune response that could prime the individual's immune system to react against a repeat exposure," said Bennett. Because the eye is "immune-privileged" -relatively isolated from the body's immune system-such a response was considered less likely than in other parts of the body, but the idea needed to be tested in practice. As in the first study, retina specialist Albert M. Maguire, M.D., a study co-author and professor of Opthalmology at Penn, injected the vector into the untreated eyes of the three subjects at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The patients had been treated one and a half to three years previously. The researchers continued to follow the three patients for six months after readministration. They found the most si

[AI] TV channels should also think about accessibility to the VI
Hi, All, I feel that the programmers who design the various informative shows should stress on accessibility of their programs. Example, the various channels which are hosting shows related to finance, science, knowledge, news, technology should all vocally speak out the time schedule of the show timings while promoting the same. Since I am with low vision, I can see that the show timings are shown on the screen but they are not readable during the promosion of such informative shows. BBC says "you can see Click at these times". However, these times are visible to only sighted people and VI do not understand the time. Here Click is a show on technology on BBC. Can we take this further with the channel owners and atleast get some changes done in the way the informative channels as mentioned above promote their shows. Hi, I can answer your question on excel. You have to ensure that all the cells from B2 to B9 are having values. If yes then go to cell B10 and press alt+= and then press enter. (make sure that jaws reads the range b2 to b9 before you press enter) The value in B10 is now the sum of range B2 to b9 Now copy value in B10 and paste in C10, D10 and so on. Other way to do the same is select the range b2 to b10 and then press combination alt + = and then press enter. Re: [AI] suggestion regarding formation of devices
Hi, The first point is very good but I did not understand the 2nd point. I think there should be some software in the mobile itself which can recognize the currency note and read out the value of the currency. it should also scan the silver line and confirm whether it is true or fake note. There are some mobile softwares which give information about the bus nos but are not accessible. I have met the developers of that software and requested them to help make it accessible. Awaiting quick action from them. I have an idea of preparing a device named currency amount recogniser with should be in the shape of a cell phone if anybody wants to recognise the note he or she keep that note on the device and it will give speech output ti visually impared in the form of result. I think that the device should also helpful for recognising whether the kept currency note is faque or not.and the most important point is-it should be within the reach of every affected persons with visual defects. and 2 a cane in which visually impared person can set his destination with bus number by typing and it will guide that person as per the instructions given by him. lastly I want to say "if we want to work for the upliftment of persons with visual defects or any persons who are facing physical or entellectual difficulty, we should leave the atitude of earning a lot of money because money is nothing in front of humanity" am I right? please send your suggestions at iether on the prescribed site or on my E mail address. that is-rituma...@gmail.com regards ritu shrivastava Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Should you reveal disability during the job search?
I agree to this point of view. You can prove your abilities dispite being a VI once you get a chance to meet the employers. Moment you mention disability in the CV, the employer may by his judgement assume that you cannot do the job and not call you for the interview. Here you do not get a chance to prove your ability though you are very sure that you can do it. Once you are already in the interview, no one can stop you from conveying what your abilities are and how you can overcome your visual disability and perform the tasks efficiently. -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of prateek aggarwal Sent: 18 May 2011 08:39 To: accessindia Subject: Re: [AI] Should you reveal disability during the job search? hi Folks, In my view, when you apply for a job, your motto is not to test how aware the employer is. You want job, and the kind of lack of awareness we have in India, there are very few employers who would call you for interview after seeing disability mentioned on your CV. Moreover, I wonder why do we need to mention disability on CV? I find no reason at all until I'm able to perform equally with my other sighted colleagues. Many of the sighted folks have health problems like heart issues, diabetes etc, and like its not necessary for them to reveal their health problems on CV, it should be same in disability too. The purpose of CV is to answer "how able you are", rather "how disable you are". So in my humble advise, mention your skillset on your resume, not disability. its just a physical difference, which does not matter at all till you are able enough to perform the job you are appearing for. The road ahead from submitting resume is already tuff, I find it unwise to make it tuffer by yourself by committing unnecessary mistakes. Regards, Prateek agarwal. Director, Daedal technovations pvt. I think there are a lot of assumptions being posted to this thread. Each case will be a different situation and needs special ways to handle them. My personal view is that do not disclose disability in cv but discuss it very importantly in the interview. Re: [AI] clarification of the second statement
Seems difficult in Mumbai conditions but not impossible. I feel this can be done only with joint efferts with the BEST authorities. There can be some device at the bus stop which interacts with the device in the bus and gives speech output of bus number and destination on arrival of the bus at least 15 seconds before the bus reaches the stop. -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Ritu Shrivastav Sent: 18 May 2011 19:24 To: accessindia Cc: sayeverything Subject: [AI] clarification of the second statement hello to all thankyou for giving me the valuable suggestion regarding formation of currency amount recogniser. Your suggestions are the prestigious gift for me. Now, I want to clarify my second statement. I have seen, that many visually challenged persons has to face difficulties in detecting bus numbers during traveling. so, I think that it is essential to have a software, through which we can overcome this problem. I think that after putting a software in walking cane, there should be a scope for visually challenged person to instruct that cane for detecting only that bus number, in which, the person wants to travel. Instruction of the visually impared person should be in written form. It means, before travelling, the person has to write destination like Saray kale khan to badarpur, and then he should write the bus number like 163 on the cane and the cane will only detect the specific destination and detect the specific bus number which has been written by the person. I hope, you all have got my point. But if you feel difficulty in my statement, you can tell me without any hesitation. Re: [AI] Regarding Disabled Buspass allowed in AirConditionedCityService Buses
Hi, I checked at the goeegaon east bus depot, the concession for disabled in AC bus is showing Rs. 55 per month which is eqvivalent to the concessional fair in ordinary bus pass. This is what showed in their system but they said that they are not very sure about it. They need to reconfirm with higher authorities as they have never issued any AC pass for disabled till now from that depot. I think we will need to confirm this further. The tole free no of BEST Mumbai is 1800227550 but not sure if even they have clear info. Re: [AI] Technology for Everyone - a NEWSWIRE Article in the Chip Magazine Issue December 2011
I feel a portable magnifier can be replaced by a tablet providing the same features once placed on the written matter. -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Prashant Naik Sent: 27 December 2011 22:01 To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] Technology for Everyone - a NEWSWIRE Article in the Chip Magazine Issue December 2011 Technology for Everyone - a NEWSWIRE Article in the Chip Magazine Issue December 2011 Page 30 and 31 NEWSWIRE FEATURE - How the gadgets we take for granted can be adapted for the disabled and tech novices In a world where everyone wants to be treated as equals, adaptable changes in technology can help bridge the digital divide. *BY KAMAKSHISHRIVASTAVA* India is a very culturally diverse country that is growing at a rapid pace. While most of us embrace technological advancements without a second thought, the number of people who want to but cannot is quite overwhelming. While the availability of resources does play a major role, more often than not, it's our cultural mindset that creates such a rift. When we talk about lack of technological access, we limit our understanding to people who have physical or mental disabilities. While adaptability is making its way into a few products making them usable by the disabled, those products form a very small minority. Most of the gadgets we use today cannot be used by differently abled people. Awareness Campaigns The Xavier's Resource Center for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) located at St Xavier's College, Mumbai is a "state of the art" support centre that helps visually challenged persons. The organization is actively advocating the need to make consumer gadgets adaptable to those who are visually challenged. Dr Sam Taraporevala, the Director at XRCVC, who is also a Reader and Head of the Department of Sociology? believes, "Products should be designed in such a way that any person irrespective of mobility would be able to use them." As a part of making general consumers aware of the troubles faced by those who can't see, the center organized a familiarization drive called Antarchakshu. The idea behind the event was to reveal how minor tweaks can help the consumer experiences of the disabled. Dr Taraporevala elaborates, "What we showcased at the event, apart from the sensitization element, was basically the focus on the consumer. We looked a products from the perspective of a disabled consumer and how manufacturers can make adaptive changes, in not only the overall design but in the consumer experience. People were taken through the supermarket experience, and then we went on to entertainment. We also made participants experience banking services, using an accessible ATM and a whole lot of other technologies that are available." *Image - Demonstration of an accessible ATM at the Antarchakshu 2011 awareness event conducted by XRCVC.* Successful initiatives It isn't that adaptable technology hasn't made its way to the general public. One visit to the resource center and you can see it for yourself. The facility boasts of a number of easy to use accessible technologies including a massive Index 4X4 PRO Braille Embosser to print books in Braille; Mountbatten MB Pro that lets you print diagrams, maps and graphs in Braille; screen readers; magnification tools; Indian language Braille translators (Shree-Lipi Braille); OCR tools that come with Braille conversion options; and other talking devices. Apart from these, there are several devices that can be used on-the-go, like Ruby, a portable video magnifier for low vision persons; DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) players that help people with reading disabilities; Angel, a multipurpose portable digital device with features of DAISY player, voice recorder, music and FM player, e-book reader and handheld magnifier. Off all the tech manufacturers, Apple products rate very high on Dr Taraporevala's list. Apart from the MacBook Pro, which has an in-built screen reader called Voice Over, other apple devices like the i-Pad, i-Phone, and iPod Touch offer adaptability apps that can make using devices quite easy for the disabled. Adaptive banking services are one major area of change that is being pushed for strongly by the center. Sam adds, "We have worked very closely with the ATM industry and with the RBI as well to get these rules passed, but the banks process has gone too slow. They have passed off partially speaking machines as accessible. Now an accessible machine, something that speaks out every screen and not just 'hello and welcome' and 'thank you', actually gives feedback, and has built in safety features like capacity to blank your screen so that nobody can "shoulder" stuff." The center has also pushed for changes in the fields of entertainment and health care. Sam adds, "Not that the blind don't go to the movies; they enjoy watching movies

Re: [AI] Request for help with Facebook
Hi, Facebook is quite accessible. It depends on how good you are with using the internet browser with the help of jaws. Just sign up and you will understand how it works. However, in case you find it very difficult, just use the basic mobile version by typing m.facebook.com in the browser and get going. I use it because I go on face book to see the status from friends but don't want to spend a lot of time using all the features of facebook. This makes it fast and still connected to friends and family. Hope others have a different point of view. Re: [AI] urgent and important
I suggest the friends to mention the actual subject in the subject line and not just "urgent" etc. This enables the users to brouze through the emails faster and search important mails in the long run. People who know more about the subject will be able to respond faster or they may postpone to another day and then may miss out the mail which does not have clear subject line. In combination with the eyes-free shell, this turns Android into a personal communication device that aids in independent living. and Monday, March 21, 2011 TalkBack Refreshed: Accessible On-Screen Keyboard And More ... Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed 1 Android Access: TalkBack Refreshed The latest enhancements to TalkBack now brings Android Accessibility to devices without a physical keyboard. Many of these enhancements also improve the overall TalkBack experience on all devices. 1.1 Highlights •New TalkBack Keyboard. •On-screen talking keyboard enables text entry via the touch screen. •Text review provides spoken feedback when moving the cursor by character, word, sentence, or paragraph. •Virtual D-Pad for navigating the Android user interface. •Global TalkBack commands enable one-click access to oft-used commands. 1.2 TalkBack Keyboard The TalkBack Keyboard is an Accessible Input Method (Accessible IME) that when activated enables you to enter and review text via the touch screen. To use this feature, you need to first activate the TalkBack keyboard via the Language and Keyboard option in the Settings menu. Next, customize the TalkBack Keyboard to taste via the TalkBack Keyboard Settings option --- here, you can customize additional features including auditory feedback as you type. Finally, open your favorite editing application, long-press on an edit field, and select TalkBack keyboard as your default IME. Note that you need do this only once; once the TalkBack keyboard has been made the default, it persists across reboots. 1.3 Entering Text On The Touch Screen TalkBack keyboard is an on-screen keyboard that supports touch exploration along with synchronized spoken and auditory feedback. This means you can now enter text when using devices that don't sport a physical keyboard. But wait, there's more here than meets the finger at first touch. Once you have activated the TalkBack Keyboard, you can switch the keyboard among three states by long-pressing the volume up/down buttons: Hidden The TalkBack keyboard is not displayed. Navigating You get access to an on-screen virtual D-Pad, along with Back, Home, Search, and Menu buttons. Typing An on-screen qwerty keyboard. My preferred means of using the keyboard is to turn on auditory feedback from within TalkBack Keyboard Settings, as well as having SoundBack active. In this mode, you hear keys as you explore the keyboard along with an auditory icon; picking up your finger types the last key you explored. Typing produces a distinctive key-click. The on-screen keyboard occupies the bottom 1/3 of your screen. While entering text, explore and find the top row, then move above it to hear what you have typed so far. 1.4 Reviewing Text By Character, Word, Sentence Or Paragraph You can now navigate and review text by character, word, sentence or paragraph. Use a two-finger tap to move forward through these navigation levels; a two-finger double tap moves in the reverse direction. Once you have selected your preferred mode of navigation, you can use Up/Down on the physical track-ball/D-Pad, or alternatively, flick up or down on the virtual D-Pad to move forward or backward through the text being reviewed. Note that text review works when the TalkBack keyboard is in either/navigating/ or typing mode; personally, I find it less error-prone on keyboard-less devices to first switch to navigating mode when reviewing text, since it is easy to inadvertently enter spurious text otherwise. 1.5 Using The On-Screen Virtual D-Pad Placing the TalkBack keyboard in navigating mode provides an on-screen virtual D-Pad --- this is especially useful on devices that do not have a physical D-Pad or track-ball on the front of the device. When active, the virtual D-Pad occupies the bottom one-third of the screen, and fast-flicks in that area has the same effect as moving with a D-Pad or track-ball. Tapping anywhere within the virtual D-Pad is the same as clicking with the track-ball. The corners of the virtual D-Pad also provides Back, Home, Search and Menu buttons --- these are especially useful on devices that lack explicit physical or capacitive buttons for these common Android actions. You can explore the virtual D-pad by moving your finger around the D-Pad area; crossing the top-edge of this area provides haptic and auditory feedback that can be used as an orientation aid in finding the virtual buttons on the corners. 1.6 Global Com
