[AI] Invitation: Webinar on Domestic Violence and Women with Disabilities - December 8th, 2020

2020-12-02 Thread Nidhi Goyal

Dear all,

Greetings from Rising Flame <http://www.risingflame.org/> !

As part of our 16 Days Campaign to end violence against women with
disabilities, ‘From the Shadows to the Center’
<https://risingflame.org/project/from-shadows-to-the-centre-16-days-of-global-campaign-to-end-violence-against-women-with-disabilities/>
, we would like to invite you for our webinar, ‘The Shadow Pandemic: Women
with Disabilities and Domestic Violence’, on Tuesday, 8 December 2020 at 6 pm
IST.

COVID-19 has resulted in a shadow pandemic worldwide - that of domestic
violence. Yet we do not hear many testimonies of women with disabilities. They
are again not visible in official data on violence, or in social discussions of
the shadow pandemic. We therefore bring to you the perspective of and on women
with disabilities and the violence they are facing in their homes during this
very difficult time. Domestic violence has always been an issue, and it will
continue in various forms even after COVID 19, but what is important is that we
see and recognise it now more urgently than ever.

Please join us for an eminent panel with speakers from across the globe:

Amanda McRae

As Director of United Nations Advocacy at Women Enabled International, Amanda
McRae builds upon relationships with U.N. human rights institutions, agencies,
and political bodies, and has collaborated with several of WEI’s partner
disabled women’s rights organizations in several other countries on U.N.
submissions and advocacy.

Yeni Rosa Damayanti

Yeni Rosa Damayanti is a Steering Committee member of TCI Asia, a regional
organization for persons with psychosocial disability and the chair of
Indonesian Mental Health Association. Yeni introduced the issue of psychosocial
disability to the cross disability and human rights movement when the issue was
still very much unknown and succeeded in pushing the issue into the center.
Yeni has been working to introduce disability issues and perspectives into the
agenda of women movement as well as introducing feminist perspectives to the
disability movement in Indonesia .

Ekaete Umoh

Ms. Umoh is an activist and Disability Inclusion expert with astute analysis of
gender, disability & development issues. Founder/CEO-FACICP Disability+; first
elected female President; Joint National Association of Persons with
disabilities, Secretary; African Disability Forum-ADF, Member International

Dear all

Greetings from Rising Flame <http://www.risingflame.org> !

, ‘From the Shadows to the Center’, we would like to invite you for our
webinar, ‘Sexual Harassment and the #MeToo Movement: Women with Disabilities
End the Silence, on Monday, 7th December 2020 at 6 pm IST.

Globally, 19.2 percent of women live with a disability. They are 2 to 3 times
more vulnerable to abuse, harassment and violence. Yet they remain invisible,
unheard, or in the shadows. This webinar is a part of our attempt to center
narratives of women with disabilities, to spotlight the sexual harassment
experienced by them, the difficulties they face in speaking up and the legal
frameworks available. The attempt will also be to help us build systems and
safeguards to ensure a safe and dignified environment for women with
disabilities within work spaces.

Join us for this webinar where Rising Flame’s founder and executive director
Nidhi Goyal will be in conversation with eminent panelists- Vrinda Grover, Amba

rights professionals.

social governance and legal, financial, and political regimes.

2020-09-29 Thread Nidhi Goyal
Dear all

Greetings from Rising Flame!

Thank you so much for your overwhelming response to the first session of
Vella Panti 2.0- a series of online events for disabled and non disabled
friends.

We bring to you the second session on online dating and persons with
disabilities on October 2, 2020 at 6 pm IST. Join us for a humourous and
insightful conversation with our speakers- all women with disabilities from
India and UK.

Sweta Mantrii: a stand up comedian, Sweta stumbled upon comedy quite
accidentally; just like the other things that she stumbles upon while
walking with her crutches. She is also a writer and a disability rights
activist.

Emily Rose Yates: Emily is a journalist, writer, and accessibility
consultant and disability rights activist based in Glasgow, UK.

Parvathy Gopakumar: Parvathy is a law student at National Law School
Bangalore. She loves forests and music and her interests vary from kathakali
to the history of Trivancore.

Let us watch some stories, hear some readings, and engage in unpacking each
strand of online dating with a disability, particularly for disabled women.

The session will be on zoom in English and Indian Sign Language. Live
captioning will be provided.

Please do register here:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfLSyMlEOa1RkqyzeNXlfJNthustZdgGMx7

Our first session was on masculinity and disability- a screening of short
films followed by an interesting fireside chat between our

speakers: Abhishek Anicca and Manak Mathyani which was attended by over 150
persons across platforms.

So don't miss this second evening filled with confessions, fun and
reflections!

Dear all

Greetings from Rising Flame!

While the cricket fans in the country gear up for the upcoming IPL, blind and
visually impaired cricket lovers are worried and frustrated! Because Hotstar,
which will be broadcasting IPL is inaccessible currently on Android and iOS
platforms with a screen reader (the software used on these platforms by blind
and visually impaired individuals). This means that if you are a blind or
visually impaired person, you simply cannot use Hotstar on your smart phone.

Join Rising Flame as we request Hotstar to make their platforms accessible. You
can be part of this by signing this petition:

All your support will help us take it forward. Cheers to an inclusive IPL and

[AI] Beijing + 25- online consultation for rights of women and girls with disabilities in India- nov 6

2019-11-05 Thread Nidhi Goyal

Dear all

Greetings from Rising Flame!

We are thrilled to share with you the invite for an online consultation to
discuss and see where women with disabilities stand 25 years from the
Beijing Declaration for Action. 25 years ago was a landmark moment in
women's rights, and today at the 5 year mark of the promise to leave no one
behind, let us gather together and discuss the gaps in the recognition of
rights of women and girls with disabilities and the possible way forward.

Details for the online consultation are as follows

Date November 6,2019

Day: Wednesday

Time: 4 pm IST

Language: English

The online platform will be accessible. Please do let us know your
additional accommodation needs and we wil facilitate that accordingly.

There are limited number of seats available, so please do register at
t...@risingflame.org <mailto:t...@risingflame.org> and we will then be able
to confirm your participation as per availability. Women with disabilities
and activists working on disability and gender rights will be given
preference.

Please find the concept note for the consultation below.

---

Championing Women with Disabilities' Rights: 25 Years on from the Beijing
Declaration and Platform for Action

The adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) at
the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 symbolised a landmark global
commitment and put in place a global framework to advance women and girl's
rights. Twenty five years later, despite a lot of progress, the pace of
change still remains slow for women in general but women with disabilities
in particular.

Globally, 19.2 percent of women live with a disability but their realities
are still invisible, and their voices are seldom heard. In India we are
struggling to make them visible in policies, laws, data and public spaces
amongst others. We recognize that women with disabilities are equal
stakeholders to shape our feminism and women's rights agenda.

The 12 critical areas of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action
include women and: poverty, education and training, health, violence, armed
conflict, economy, power and decision-making, institutional mechanisms,
human rights, media, environment and the girl child.

Even as more women are achieving better outcomes nationally and across the
region, the same cannot be said for women with disabilities. There exist
huge inequalities in who gets access to education, political participation,
and whose needs are being met by the legislation and systems within the
country.

We know that if we stand for gender equality then the specific needs of
women with disabilities needs to be met for the achievement of inclusive and
sustainable development goals/. The Beijing+25 Review meets with a 5-year
milestone for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and provides us
the opportunity to take stock of progress made and actions required to
address barriers to gender equality.

A review with focus on women with disabilities

The engagement of civil society is a vital part of the Beijing+25 review
process. As women with disabilities and activists working with and for
women with disabilities, it becomes important for us to discuss the
following:

-where women with disabilities are located at the moment and what are the
changes we deem necessary for their growth across the 12 critical areas of
the Beijing Platform for Action.

- ways in which policy, systems and movements (women's rights, health
rights, economic rights, sexual rights) can be transformed to not leave
women and girls with disabilities behind

We aim to make a brief document from the online consultation to put out in
the public domaine and hopefully inform the regional and global Beijing + 25
processes.

---

So please join us on November 6, 2019.

Regards

Nidhi Goyal

[AI] naa mein naa hai- workshop invite for feb 23 in Bangalore

2019-02-18 Thread Nidhi Goyal
Dear All

Greetings!

Rising Flame and Enable India present Rising Flame’s workshop series: "Naa Main
Naa Hai - Understanding Consent, Love and Violence in Intimate Relationships"

What is this workshop?

Have you ever felt confused, what if the expressions are saying yes but they
actually saying no? How does one know?

Have you ever thought of, "I am a woman; can I make the first move?" Has it
ever bothered you that your responses must either be yes or no? is this
assistance, is this flirtation?

If you relate to any of these questions or have more, then this workshop is for
you. Romance and relationships are complicated. Boundaries get blurred. They
get even thinner when we live with a disability; and when boundaries blur and
consent can't be gauged, we end up hurting ourselves or the other person.

Let's get together to discuss, talk and understand consent through songs,
conversations and a bucket load of fun.

Date: Saturday, 23 February 2019

Time: 1:30 pm to 6pm

[AI] my reaction on and review of Kabil in scroll

2017-02-05 Thread nidhi goyal
Hi friends

sharing my reaction to Kabil- published in scroll

https://thereel.scroll.in/828490/bollywood-heroes-always-win-so-why-should-k
aabil-be-any-different

Bollywood heroes always win, so why should 'Kaabil' be any different?

The Hrithik Roshan starrer goes a long way in normalising disability in the
movies.

by Nidhi Goyal

Published 13 hours ago.

A man and a woman fall in love, get married, and are living happily ever
after. until the villain intervenes and harasses the woman. She dies and the
man avenges her death. This could be the story of any Bollywood film. But
millions of blind persons in India finally sat up on January 25, 2017, and
said hmm, here are characters and a story that we relate to - and, you know
what, it is absolutely "normal".

I am talking about Sanjay Gupta's Kaabil, where both leads are blind. This
film is not special to me as a blind woman and a disability rights activist
only because of the stunning Hrithik Roshan and his sweet character Rohan
Bhatnagar, but because the film is not about disability. We have seen films
like Taare Zameen Par and Margarita With a Strawthat have been issue-based
or educational. Just as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham have affluent protagonists
who provide the context to the plot, similarly Kaabil has blind
protagonists. "Normalising" disability in cinema - that is what Kaabil does.

Critics are sure that the movie is gender insensitive - which is only the
problem of Kaabil but almost all of Bollywood. They further say that that
Roshan has been portrayed as a superhero fighting off all the villains who
harmed his wife Supriya (Yami Gautam), but does that really have anything to
do with the disability? If Bollywood is known for heroes who always win at
the end, why should it be different if the hero is blind?

Rather than using disability to gain sympathy and pity, the movie reflects
the research invested in its making and the casually inserted nuanced
moments. You would know this as soon as the film opens with a scene of the
lead actor cooking. It was fantastic to watch a blind man dealing with rupee
notes and correcting the autorickshaw driver when he tries to cheat him. It
was also fun to see that the blind man knew how to ride a bicycle.

And it is definitely a no-brainer when he gifts a watch to his future wife.
These sequences actually question what most people shockingly don't know
about visually impaired persons. To add to this, the beautiful energy of the
blind couple dancing is a recreational activity not commonly associated with
disability - the fact that two blind individuals are confident, independent,
and considering romance and marriage was probably an eye opener for most.

Play

The Mon Amour song from Kaabil.

When the trailer was out, alarm bells began ringing for me, particularly
when I heard the dialogue "Negative aur negative positive toh nahi ho sakte"
and "Andhera andhere ko ujala toh nahi de sakta". These are typical
statements made by lay persons who know nothing about living with
disability. These are unsaid assumptions around love and relationships that
society makes and that seep into the subconscious minds of people with
disabilities.

Thus in real or reel life, the discussion around potential dating partners
for someone disabled is reduced to the disability and not how wonderful or
not the person is. Showing people with disabilities to be incomplete and
hopelessly dependent, particularly in relationships, has been the forte of
Indian cinema.

The trailer suggested that Kaabil was no different. But Rohan helps Supriya
deal with this incorrect assumption and experience a different reality of
equal love.

The film is not all hunky dory, and is punctuated with ignorance and stigma.
Rohan's close friend says that he has heard that love is blind, but he
doesn't know that the blind also love. These lines, though said in jest,
highlight important issues faced by disabled people. The popular idea is
that disability reduces us to something less than complete, and that love,
romance and sex will never be on our minds with the struggles and survival
issues that we face.

Kaabil also subtly echoes questions that perhaps many people imagine and
want to raise. This is particularly in the area of sex and sexuality. The
film very beautifully dispels such misconceptions when it answers the
ignorant questions posed by the villains who wonder about Rohan and
Supriya's wedding night, "How would these blind people be doing it?" This
statement is juxtaposed with a lovemaking scene.

Play

Kaabil.

Yes, Supriya is at greater risk because of her blindness, but the issues
portrayed in the film were very real for disabled women who are raped by
someone who has money, power, and other privileges. The corruption of the
police, the difficulties in giving evidence, and the helplessness of a
middle-class couple were heart-wrenching an

[AI] join us in the online campaign on love, sex, and disability

2016-11-28 Thread nidhi goyal

Dear all

Greetings from Point of View.

The International Day of Persons with Disability is soon approaching! As a part
of the celebrations we are very excited to run the #LoveSexDisability campaign
on twitter and facebook in partnership with Crayon Impact from nov 28 till
December 4. Through the campaign, we aim to raise awareness and bust myths
surrounding sex, relationships and disabilities.

For this purpose, we're inviting people to upload/send in their stories-
through videos, audio recordings, tweets etc. (whatever you're comfortable
with!)- narrating a myth they've often faced about disability and relationships
and busting the same. If you're not disabled, we'd love to hear a myth you held
and how that was busted for you. We want to create a discussion around these
myths and work to inform and educate through #LoveSexDisability and it would be
wonderful to have you on board too!

So please do tweet or facebook with the hash tag . in case you want us to
upload it, please email it individually to my colleague Neha Mathews at

[AI] my performance at an evening of stand up comedy performances on disability and sexuality in Mumbai

2016-07-22 Thread nidhi goyal

Dear all,

I am performing a stand up around disability and sexuality in Mumbai this
Sunday. It is a sub set of my stand up act “Can you see me now” which has made
the rounds in Kolkutta, kathmadu, and Geneva in the past six months.

Can you see me now?

A stand -up comedy act by Nidhi Goyal who is a disability and gender rights
activist from Mumbai. Goyal uses humor to challenge the prevalent attitudes
towards persons with disabilities: the over-curiosity, the running away; the
false sympathy. Her performance gives you a glimpse of her complex life
experiences as a woman, a disabled person, and of course and activist talking
about sexuality -things that you rather shush!

Details of the show:

Date : July 24

Time: 7pm to 9 pm

Venue: Auditorium, Daughters of St Paul, Waterfield road, Bandra West. Opposite
Club Royalty

Please note: the venue is wheelchair accessible

I and three other artists will perform with stand up comedian Aditi Mittal
hosting the show. This is a fund raiser for a series of short films on
disability that <http://www.getyourcrayon.org/> CraYon Impact wants to make.
Tickets priced at INR 200 which can be purchased on this link below

[AI] Invitation to join willingnable | E-group

2016-03-01 Thread nidhi goyal
Dear all,

Greetings from Point of View!

We are happy to share that we are here with an exclusive space for women with
disabilities, a space in the digital arena that is much wanted and deserved. We
welcome you to join this willingnable
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/willlingnable> online community for
women with disabilities and women activists working on their issues. your
participation will make the e-group richer with the exchange of ideas and
thoughts, sharing of information and experiences, and swapping of realistic
practical advice.

This is not just another group but a group which wants to hear from you and
will value your leadership. It is not just ‘FOR’ women with disabilities but we
want it to be ‘BY’ them as well. to action this thought we will have a
different group lead every month (of course a woman with a disability!) who
will steer conversations, nudge the group and bring diverse perspectives.

This effort has been initiated after the raving success of our website
www.sexualityanddisability.org <http://www.sexualityanddisability.org/> and of
course our impactful accessible ‘disability and
<http://sexdisblog.org/section/workshops/> sexuality’ trainings across
different regions. We look forward to your support and interest to take this
e-group forward.

We know disabled women have an interesting, strong, and important voice and we
want to hear it. So please join us and have your say!

Forwarding an email on the RPD bill- sorry for cross posting if any.

While reading the report I found that the committee doesn't seem to be very
much in tune with the UNCRPD and the discussion about the naming of the Bill
sounds quite patronizing. I'm pasting the section here below:

Title of the Bill 3.1 While examining the views of individuals/stakeholders and
organizations on the Bill, it was pointed out to the Committee that the title
of the Bill sounded derogatory and disparaging and therefore, needs to be
modified. Across all section of stakeholders, an unanimous view emerged that
the title of the Bill, may be changed and made preferably as ―Rights of Persons
with Different Abilities or Special Abilities‖. 3.2 When the Ministry was asked
to justify the existing title of the Bill, they in their written reply stated
as under: ―The Bill is in line with UNCRPD. The UNCRPD uses the term Persons
with Disabilities. Some Persons with Disabilities have objection to use of
words 'differently abled' or 'specially abled‖. 3.3 The Committee are of the
view that using the words “Persons with Disabilities” in the title of the Bill
not only sound disparaging but also belittle the enormous talent, capacity and
ability these persons possess to take up any challenge and compete with other
normal human beings. Further, the present title itself declares them as
„persons with disabilities‟ whereas the intention and purpose of the Bill is to
empower them and give them their rightful due. In fact, the Committee
themselves were awe-struck when they witnessed, during their close interaction
with these people, the special knack and endowment of these people. The
Committee are of the considered view that the present title of the Bill does
not justify the talent and aptitude these persons own. The Committee,
therefore, recommend that the Bill could be titled either as “The Rights of 24
Persons with the Different Abilities” or “The Rights of Persons with Special
Abilities” or “The Rights of the Differently Able persons” which is not only
more progressive and encouraging but will also help correct the discourse about
the disabled people besides reducing their psychological complexes.

Yes Shiv, it will be quite a challenge but I guess that would be the same if
a hearing and speech impaired person visited Dining in the Dark.

I would love for someone in this group who has learnt sign language and has
interacted independently with the hearing and speech impaired to share their
experiences- challenges and ease.
Hoping to hear from someone

Sign of the times

By Benita Fernando, Mumbai Mirror | May 2, 2015, 05.03 AM IST

Sign of the times

(Left to right) Steward Rohit Patil, hostess Baljeet Kaur, head of training
Clyde Castellino with Anuj Shah and Prashant Issar

City gets its first eatery with deaf-mute only service staff, encouraging
guests to place orders using sign language.

If you wish to order a bowl of piquant kaffir rasam at Powai's just-launched
Mirchi and Mime (M&M), you are going to have to interlock your pinkies into
a 'S' before you raise your index, middle and ring fingers of one hand.
Staying on for main course? Tell the steward you want the guinea fowl inside
out by making a 'T' with your index fingers, and then the number 8.

If that's exactly what Rohit Patil ends up bringing to your table 20 minutes
later, without you having uttered a word, it's because the restaurant's
service staff of 27, all hearing and speech impaired, have been training to
have their service down to pat for the last 14 weeks.

Owned by Anuj Shah and Prashant Issar, the 80-seater offers a pan-Indian
menu in a fine-dining setup where a massive wall pays homage to traditional
cooking techniques with framed brass ladles and ancient scrapers. Inside the
kitchen, dessert chef Mahesh Chinde carries his disability lightly on his
shoulders as he puts together a portion of sitaphal panna cotta.

The idea to keep sign language as the mainstay of service at their first
establishment (the duo insists it's one of 21 they plan to roll out in
India, and possibly abroad) came to Issar when he came across Signs
Restaurant staffed by deaf waiters in Toronto's Yonge and Wellesley area.
Issar, whose 20-yearlong of hospitality experience, including an association
with London's Masala Zone and Michelin-starred Amaya as GM, says he realised
that the hearing-and-speech impaired not only make for focused talent with
little to distract them, they almost always are competent non-verbal
communicators. He insists they have been hired for their ability, not
disabilities. "We wished to present Indian food creatively while helping
develop employable skills," he says.

All picked from Chembur's Rochiram T Thadani School for Hearing Handicapped
and the National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped
(NASEOH), the staff has been trained by Dr Reddy's Foundation and Clyde
Castellino, M&M's head of training.

For this assignment, Castellino had to learn Indian Sign Language from
scratch. Shah considers it a valuable investment, arguing that hiring the
disabled is not part of the firm's CSR; they make up their core resource.

And so, animated faces, dancing eyes and flying fingers are an everyday
thing at M&M. Issar's arrival is indicated by air-drawing a tattoo on the
forearm; Shah, by his spiked hair; Castellino, by an earring, and 21-yearold
hostess, Baljeet Kaur, whose family of five is speech-and-hearing impaired
too, by her curls.

Not just the staff, the eatery also encourages guests to indulge in
gestures. Their imaginative menu carries simple 2-step sketches of signs
next to corresponding dishes that customers can follow. A simple gesture
glossary also helps indicate nuances of taste, including salt and spice. It
gets even more interesting when choosing meats. The fingers must flutter if
you crave fish or mimic a hen's beak for a portion of chicken. For the more
officious meetings, the manager is happy to present you with a printed set
menu, and no, it's not uncouth to point-and-order here.

"We want our service to be as seamless as that at a regular restaurant, and
ensure our food is the cornerstone," hopes Issar.

Ground Floor, Transocean House, Lake Boulevard, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai.
Call: 41415151. Opens today.

Regards,

Shiv

Totally agree with Payal. Also pasting content into email increases weight
of an email and it costs money to those who are not interested in a

Re: [AI] sanitary napkin vs tampon? threading, plucker, or waxing? oops

2015-02-20 Thread nidhi goyal
Dear Moderator,
Thank you for the clarification.
As you must have read, all of us women felt the same -
however, i am surprised that objections were raised by other women as well,
but your email only addresses me to bring objections to you. obviously as an
equal member of the list, i would not appreciate if rules and displeasure
was only exclusively reserved for me or expressed towards me.
"blindness and lack of literature on these subjects in an acessible format"
in the presence of google, sure if you and the monitoring team and other
members think- i agree.
i will definitely not retract from the other things that i said.
once again, thank you for the clarification. happy to comply.

Dear Nidhi
1 Well, the boundaries of the list has not been extended.
2 May I point to the list guidelines which states, if any member is
having any objection relating to any post, it should be brought to the
attention of the moderator and not put on the list.
3 The subject line was very clear on the thread and I see no objection
on the discussion on this thread.
4 All the points you have flagged are really questions arrising due to
blindness and lack of literature on these subjects in an accessible
form.
5 I don't agree with your asertion of space invaders in this context,
nor:patriarchal attitude and male hegemony."
6 I don't see any objection if women related topics are brought to the
list which is of course blindness related.I do recall, there was some
discussion on make up etc in the past.

Due to keywords in the mail, this mail did not reach me as it got
filtered out at our servers. Hence, I may not be able to respond
quickly on this thread.

[AI] sanitary napkin vs tampon? threading, plucker, or waxing? oops or
only electric shavers?

nidhi goyal Thu, 19 Feb 2015 21:46:25 -0800

Dear all,

Greetings from Mumbai.
i have read the very interesting discussions going on on this list, and i
would request someone to provide me with the guidelines of the list again-
it seems we are pushing boundaries each time.

In a very recent eenthusiastic thread active on the list i can only say that
it is shocking how couple of points could be related to blindness or
accessibility:

-what should be done first, trimming or shaving

-how much time does a shave take

-if someone has a hard growth or a soft one

-how to clean the blade

-getting rid of the pubic hair

the first one or two exchanges were okay or could be directly/indirectly
related to accessibility but seriously the 37 others that followed?

these are only a few out of the many objectionable contents.

As a woman i can and will share my idea that this list suddenly seems like
an electronic space invader. for those who dont know who space invaders
are, let me tell you. they are those men who share a two seater bench with a
woman and take up three quarters of that seat/bench. now why do i say that ?
because the gendered discussion going on this list reflects a very strong
patriarchal attitude and male hegemony. i can see how objections by women
were royally ignored.

it is not about personal is political but about the boundaries of a said
list and where i choose to be. if Access India decides that the boundaries
have changed and they are okay with gendered discussions and personal
matters that concern the blind then just for a minute reflect on this.

Women will absolutely bring up the accessibility of a sanitary napkin vs
tampon. i am sure menstrual issues are of great concern to blind women. if
toilet habits of men are okay being discussed here so should be that of
women. and of course we will too indulge into enlighting discussions of
whether waxing is more doable than self threading, and elaborate on how
frequently will we have to do the hair removal, or which method will leave
our skin soft and not let it go dark.

well, i really cant miss out on personal is political. we could bring up sex
positions on this list, because blindness leaves many people apprehensive
about not having seen sex positions earlier and lack of that impacting their
sexual lives. i work on gender, sexual rights, and disability so definitely
this wont make me shy away.

the point is that please tell us what is access India all about and some of
us will be happy to decide whether or not we want to be in this space and of
course others may choose to be here with full awareness of what can come up
and will be acceptable. of course some others like me will start utilising
the newly pushed boundaries!

Happy to comply.

Dear Avinash,
some straight answers-
what are we going to clean: public property in Mumbai- yet to be decided
because our sighted volunteers are scouting around the city to see which
parts are not cleaned regularly or need cleaning the most. there might be
too many such places so we will pick and choose one.
who is going to clean- the blind and visually impaired
what is the definition of cleanliness- please refer to any simple
dictionary. if you want to take this to a philosophical level, i suggest we
discuss this off the list.

to the rest of your remarks and the link pasted below, i think you are
trying to give an extreme political tone to a simple effort onn world white
cane day. "Bits of paper lying on the floor, makes the place untidy, pick
them up" is something we learnt as a nursery rhyme and i have been
implementing it since.
and i am going to ignore some parts of your remark because if i were to take
it seriously, there is a very uncalled for indirect implication that me or
my co-organiser are trying to orchestrate a sham or a farce- which is a
serious offensive assumption

to the rest of the list,
thanks for your phone calls and emails. we will be delighted if more and
more people join us.

"Some straight questions. What are we going to clean, who is going to
clean and what is our concept of cleanliness? Will this campaign
address the most important, most basic and most neglected question of
modernisation of our sanitation system? Whose India are we aiming at
cleaning up? In India, cleanliness can't be just about Bollywood actor
Aamir Khan preaching that we do not throw banana peels by the street
or piss on walls nor about PMs, CMs, all manner of ministers and
bureaucrats and politicians picking up brooms to clean streets and
public toilets and public places that have already been thoroughly
cleaned up for them to perform their sham.
What an irony! India is not clean because we don't want cleaners to
live with dignity and equality. We want the 'cleaners' to experience
'the spiritual experience' of cleaning shit!"

[AI] celebrate World White Cane day with clean India

2014-10-09 Thread nidhi goyal
Dear all,

Greetings from Mumbai.

On the occasion of World White Cane day (October 15), let us display the
celebration of blindness through our vision. we have decided to come
together and join in the goal of "Clean India" by cleaning parts of Mumbai
on Sunday October 19, 2014, at 8 am, venue yet to be decided.

Each blind individual who agrees to participate will be provided with a
sighted escort to aid them in the cleaning process. it is our chance to
give back to the society and claim our equality by shouldering the
responsibility of an Indian citizen!

If you think it is worth it to get your hands dirty to make this country
clean, do drop us a line at shivrah...@gmail.com or
nidhigoyal...@gmail.com; or simply dial +91 9819409860 to register with my
co-organiser Mr Shivkumar Rahejaby October 15, 2014.

This effort is independent of any organisation(NGO or political party) and
we would urge our blind and sighted friends, acquaintences, and fellow list
members to be a part of our first step in creating a clean tomorrow.

Re: [AI] I am not your inspiration- Stella Young on deglorifyingdisability!

2014-08-04 Thread nidhi goyal
Hello all
it was interesting to hear Stella's talk.
she has highlighted a much needed point of disability is not an exception
and of course the way it is used to portray inspiration. the girl without
the hands is objectified to inspire and push the child who perhaps has both
hands but not the patience or temprament to paint or write his lessons etc.
in this process the child is subconsciously given the message that he is not
only lucky but also superior to the other girl in a fashion.

I too ascribe to the social model of disability defined by Mike Oliver
which says that it is not the disability itself but the environment which is
disabling the individuals with an impairment. with hostile infrastructure,
constant struggle for basics like education etc, the nondisabled world makes
simple usual things in a life an achievement and the hell they are... but
rather than them lauding us and our everyday struggle they should be
ashamed of the disabling conditions they dish out. i would like to share an
example here. when i topped the postgraduate media course the head of my
department told everyone with great pride that i had topped and you know
what without any extra favours from them. the favours she referred to was
simple accommodations like accessible study material etc. they had
practically made my life hell with their non cooperation and they were proud
of me overcoming all those challenges. well kudos to me for facing the
challenges but shame on them for their behaviour. so the point is that
sometimes we are forced to combat ordinary situations which are made into
extra ordinary hurdles and then made out to be exceptions having achieved
the ability to live life, learn, work, grow.
on the other hand if we were to consider the disabled and the nondisabled
world together, whoever has achieved something should be appreciated
irrespective of their disability. so when a politician, a CEO of a MNC, a
sports person etc can be my inspiration, i do not know why a disabled person
who has achieved something in life should not be marked as an inspiration!
the only difference is these people will be looked up to and definitely not
with the condescending idea with which the girl without hands was being
considered.

lastly, something i have noticed happening in reality- we as disabled
people sometimes live in a dualism. We want to be the norm but at the first
chance of receiving special treatment, or a word of praise, or the title of
an inspiration or a celebratory award, we jump like school children do on
free ice cream. Like Stella said it is for us to decide if we really have
achieved something or are we being complimented for existing and remembering
our name. if latter is the case and we allow this to happen simply because
we love the attention and awards etc, then we would play a major role in
perpetuating a deeply embedded discriminatory attitude. so it is not all
about them changing, it is about us mending our ways as well.

Just my thoughts, thanks for reading.

Yes Avinash. Often it is the easiest thing to do. give them a consolation
prize of being right up there, an ispiration and then grumble about the idol
having feet of clay.
If only they could just accept us for who we are, life would be a better

Wonderful. Enjoyed listening.

agreed, people with disabilities are not the 'objects of inspiration'.

Most of mobility training is actually practicing your regular routes and
learning the basic techniques. I think you can learn the basics easily in a
week. Things like walking in a straight line and getting the two tap
technique right will come with practice.

Re: [AI] Is tour possible, casual and safe for VH.

2014-05-23 Thread nidhi goyal
Hi nitesh,
I am glad you put out this problem in front of the group. And I am
extremely delighted to see the enthusiastic responses from the
experienced.
You have more than a few tips listed by your friends. But as a VI
woman with a VI brother and many VI friends (male as well) I would
like to add a few points.
Ask your friend not to be so apprehensive. It’s only when he goes on
the trip, he will figure out the solutions to all of these. He cant
really prepare for every eventuality in advance. So besides general
preparation, confidence will be his key.
if there is still some time left before he plans this trip, please
ask him to get a white cane and try and get his mobility in place. The
cabs and the guides take you so far. You have to have the ability to
get up and walk out or in a restaurant or hotel etc on your own if you
are planning to have a nice time as a VI and specially with another VI
mate. Also, i have researched a bit in disability and romance and my
findings say that women (disabled or nondisabled) feel safer and more
secure if their partner is independent (irrespective of blind or
otherwise).

I have been to other cities (in India and abroad) with my brother and
my VI friends. and to give you an example I was strolling in a park
with a VI friend and I as a VI woman, would have hated to have a guide
hovering in the background while we swopped our childhood stories, or
crazy moments, ideological opinions etc. not at every moment did we
know where we were heading. sometimes my friend took the lead,
sometimes i did and it was fun.
And of course, there is no harm in a woman guiding you – VI or
otherwise- but men (not generalizing but many of them) tend to get
either too demeaned with this, or get quite insecure about the male
waitor / guide/ cabby holding their lady partners and guiding them.
Hope your friend will not be similarly affected – always assuming his
mate is better with mobility and the white cane.
That is a lengthy list and of course I could keep writing but I think
we all have by now overwhelmed your friend!
Good luck and fun time to him and his partner.

Re: [AI] Neighbour rapes 12-year-old blind girl

2012-12-13 Thread nidhi goyal
Dear all,
Of course it is inhuman and disgusting the way things are working.
But I am happy that a labourer has had the sense and guts to report
the case of child sex abuse to the police.
Rape is not the only form of sex abuse that a child can go through.
Statistics say that 51% of children- both male and female- in India
face abuse; while 80 to 90% of disabled children face one form of
sexual abuse or the other.
It is often noticed that parents and caregivers – irrespective of
their education and other background- shy away from talking to their
children about child sex abuse and safety.
The mildest form of abuse – like forced touching or stroking- can
leave the deepest impact on the child and his/her entire life.
So let us all be better parents / guardians/ teachers/ society
