[AI] Crime against the VI

Day before yesterday a blind guy was poisoned with a biscuit offered by a man
helping him, in a local bus in delhi... in greed of his gold rings...
he was found unconscious on road by the police an hour later and struggled
through the night in the hospital for his life... to get back to senses. The
docs said...such cases are becoming common.

It is a grave issue where the most vulnerable - blind people are in danger of
even taking help on the road.

My disabled especially blind friends...pls be careful and dont accept anything
to eat from stratngers.

But more importantly lets do something about it. I am scared as the blind girls
are more at risk who are encouraged by us to travel all the time independently.
But help on the road cant be avoided.

Any suggestions?

Hi shalini,

I doubt there are any real solutions to the problem here. Blanket advice on
not eating things from strangers usually does not work. Why was the person
wearing gold in the buss? That seems to be more dangerous. Sensible security
precautions were not taken and he paid the price. Mind you, this could have
happened to a sighted person as well. The only question is did the person
poison the biscuit at that time or did he have it with him to use on a
victim? If the biscuit was poisoned on the fly, then yes, a sighted person
may have detected this and have refused to eat. However, I have heard of a
neighbor whose fully sighted son was poisoned in this fashion on a train.
So, be sensible about wearing jewelry and exercise heightened situational
awareness when travelling.

I have tried to maximize my independence by the use of technology so that I
do not have to interface with any humans on the road but that goal remains
some distance away especially given our road and traffic conditions.

2010-12-10 Thread Shadab Husain
Dear Ma'am,

This is an unfortunate news.

Anyone can tell that carrying expensive gadgets has become a need but
wearing jewellery is an avoidable fashion. Further, it is regularly
announced that we must not take things to eat from strangers, however,
hardly people heed such precautions.

A mishap might have happened with me on the New Delhi railway station a few
days before. Around 9: 30 pm, I was puttering about the platform, waiting
for my train that I was approached by a boy who inquired from me about a
train and then we conversed for a few moments.

While I was talking to him, another boy approached me from my right and
asked me that if he travelled without a ticket to Putna, will he be caught?
Then he started narrating his story that he used to work in any factory but
the owner did not pay him anything and he was abused by him, so he has
stolen his money and is leaving the city.

After this, on the request of the boy who stood left to me, he took out a
lot of stolen money from his bag. I scolded him and distanced myself from
both of them as their conversation appeared planned and the mouths of both
were smelling of the same hooch.

Moving a few feet away I checked the opened pockets of my bag (thinking they
might have dropped anything in it and will recover after the danger is
over). I would have stood there for a minute that a third boy smelling of
the same hooch asked me that what was I shown by that boy. I frowned at him,
urged him to get lost and do his work.

I had strolled away from the crowd because the train was about to arrive and
that time people go wild but after this I left that secluded place.

With girls things are especially dangerous. However, they can dial 100,
spray pepper and must be unhesitant in making noise on the streets should
they sense any danger.

And we all must try to use our phones carefully, as less as possible.

Take care everyone,

Shadab
