Re: [AI] Database of Visually Impaired Bankers
HI Mr. Banker, As you know, there is a group dedicated for this purpose. Interested people can interact there. There are already more than380 members, and the membership is on the up. Considering the vulnerability of visually challenged, especially in a sector like banking, I think it is not a good idea to publish names and posts in the public domain. So, please rethink on this issue. Re: [AI] Database of Visually Impaired Bankers
Dear Mr. Vamshi, Thanks for your email. The moment you write an email to any e-group/mailing list, your information becomes public. All the email senders of AI have already made their information public, so there is nothing to worry about filling the form. But, if you or anyone gives a potent argument against creating this database, I will delete the form. Please specify the vulnerabilities you are talking about. On 5/21/14, Vamshi. Re: [AI] database
Dear Access Indians I think our responsibility doesn't end as soon as we fill up and submit our form. Each of us should take the responsibility of getting this form filled up by atleast ten others. I have already taken such a step and am in the process of completing the first ten. The fact that an organisation is paying someone for getting our data base forms filled up is really paining me. I feel those funds should go into the project of fighting a court case regarding the ten rupee coin or relaxation of the guidelines for scribe for banking exam, and not for something which is in our hands. -- G. [AI] database
I have been a member of this group since 2002 and have been working in the sector since 2006. Most of you know the work that I have done and some of you know about the work that I am going to take up. Very often, I have come across questions relating to what a total blind or low visioned person can do or cannot do. It is very easy if employers believe that the visually challenged can do all jobs but the reality is that NGOs and prospective employees need to show the prospective employers a list of people doing the same work In hindsight we have always found that it was always best to answer my giving examples. Most of you will agree with me that this information is critical. Recently there were 2 similar questions on the list about lecturers and especially lecturers in architecture and the question of how many people working for SBI.Such questions keep coming up from time to time. Two years ago, xrcvc started collecting information for a database of visually challenged people who are employed. Initially it was handled by volunteers. Some of you replied and sent your completed forms. a lot of you could not be reached. I thought that a comprehensive database was a supur idea and therefore I took it up. It was a challenge. I first had a volunteer Meetul help with the emails but she soon got tired of reminding and cajoling. even then I continued to plod along. For the last 3 months Zainab a young assistant has been doing all the work. She sends you the database form in exel and word and she telephones you if she has your phone number. She then feeds your information on to the master database. She also needs to update the information that she already has. She ultimately spends several hours of her day and my resources doing this work and XRCVC will be compensating her for the same. She is off to the US in one months time so now I dont have the luxury of sending you reminder after reminder. Although we have received a lot of co-operation from some of you, others have had to be reminded thrice. It seems that a lot of you are comfortable giving the information for the database on the telephone but are not comfortable and do not have the time to reply to a Word/Excel file. Some of you do not realise that you have an obligation to your successors who can use your hardwork, your pitfalls, your successes and your experiences. its very easy for me to have said that I can buy any book that I want abroad so i wont work on the copyright issue or that I have no problems with my share trading so I wont bother about working on the circular from NSDL or that I have a bank account with all facilities so I wont work on the Banks issue. Why did I need to spend hours on working with RBI and IBA for no benefit to me personally. The guidelines for scribes have taken away hours and maybe months from my life even though I will never personallly benefit from them. I thought it was my duty to do what was right and what was required. I am therefore requesting you to do your little bit and be part of this database. We need your details. I have heard an excuse that you need permission from your employer but what permission do you require to give your name, age and some basic details. Dear Kanchan, indeed your doing a wonderful job, which is tedious in nature. But, please don't get frustrated. Somebody had to take up such work and you are doing it. I have sent my details to you as many times as you asked for. I hope, one day you will publish this database, and that time you will get the satisfaction of having done something concrete. For the last 3 months Zainab a young assistant has been doing all the work. She sends you the database form in exel and word and she telephones you if she has your phone number. She then feeds your information on to the master database. She also needs to update the information that she already has. Re: [AI] Database
I must admit that I am one of the guilty party who have not filled in the data sheet on time and finally did so after Kanchan's pestering and prodding (I felt lazy to fill in just one form and send it just once by email but she must have mailed me at least thrice to get this done). I feel really bad for not having done it in the first instance. But, thanks to her effort, it's finally done. Re: [AI] Database
Organising information regarding career and educational issues is a crucial step. For hosting such a database, there must be a proper website. In US, American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), has opened a career connect website that hosts information for and off people engaged in various careers. They have an interesting feature called search for a mentor. Under this, one can search for a particular job field, and the search finds mentors that work in that field. The mentors are categorised according to different parameters. National Federation for the Blind (NFB) hosts different lists that serves different interests. For example, they have lists based on travel, technology, writing, etc. In India, an attempt has been made to gather information on disability by www.disabilityindia.org. We probably need similar kind of approach. When parents of visually challenged and the newly visually challenged visit Associations for help they are generally scared and disheartened by the disability. These organisations could use the database to increase the confidence levels. Its like when I was going blind I thought for a little while that I would never be able to continue with my career till I saw Deepak Motiwala a blind senior Solicitor doing well in his career. I was lucky that I did not have difficulty finding Deepak's name or address what would have happened had he been from another city and I hadnt been told about him. This database will be online and will be useful to both organisations working for the welfare of the visually challenged and the challenged themselves. 3. About a month ago Amar Jain had asked on accessindia, the names of Visually challenged lawyers. Did any of you notice that there were so many lawyers on and off this list but none of us could give a complete list or a reasonablly good list. Had this database been available this question would not have arisen and the replies would have been better and Amar's job done faster. 4. There was an email from Prateek agarwal regarding IT sector but he has not specified in what part of IT sector does he want information. The database would have helped him. 5. Last week I was fighting a case against the Maharashtra Public Services Commission for a totally blind candidate. Even though the question was not before the Court but the Court did ask casually that could a totally Blind person do the work of a Naib Tahsildar. Of course I said yes but had I known at that time that our very own Rajesh Assudani had got the appointment letter from the very same Commission for the post of Naib Tahsildar the Court would have passed the order much faster. I hope I have explained my case for the database and all of you will send in your details and especially the 75 people who have got mails on this issue from me. please ask your friends and do definitely make it a point to do it this weekend. I will not stop sending you reminders but you better take responsibility too. Thanks for reading this mail and sorry for being so direct about this issue. I was losing hope about ever finishing this project. A very big thank you to those who have filled up their details and sent the forms. very good suggestion Roopakshi. We may, however, restrict the access to the particular section of the site only to the genuine members of accessindia. Re: [AI] database of educational books
I agree with you Rajesh that we should not be rigid and I myself advocate a course of action which is that the use by the print disabled is a fair use and therefore exempt under the Copyright. Act. I had this discussion with the Book share people and Prof. Vinod Sena and the Intellectual Property Rights Practitioners association. Every one agrees that we could claim the fair use or fair dealing exemption however everyone feels that unless the special exemption is available in the law,we are not going to get our way. Lobbying is on and pressure is being built up but we are not votes thereforeit will happen in due course. Must mentionthat Sam and his colleagues at XRCVC are monitoring the situation on a daily basis andare mobilising decision makers. On the second issue it is evry copyright holders decision to get the benefit of the copyright or to let it go. NCERT and others have chosen to let it go. Therefore there material is in public domain and open to reproductionetc. Will be away for a week and wont be able to respond to any comments on this thread.
