agree, Harish sir. I think both paths can be pursued together. Seeking the enforcement of what is already on the statute book and seeking legislative reform to have stronger penalties. The service provider lobby in india is very strong. so getting any penalties approved will be very hard. Pragmatically, therefore, I think we often simply have to work with the framework that we have, imperefect as it is. Hi I agree, penalty as an option, should be used cautiously. Having said, that, it is not the penalty amount which is a deterrent, but the associated reputation risk is something which any establishment would like to avoid. It sends a message across, the said party has done something which deserves penalty. It vindicates it.This signal is not the same as that of a reprimand. We should be open for that as well. A nudge like that sends a sharp ripples. It breaks down myth that big enterprise can get away because of their sheer size and that we are a small fly of which they can easily manage. RPwD Act does envisage penalty of up to 5 lakh. SC fined Spice Jet 10 lakh for discriminating against a disabled person. We can use other fora also, like consumer courts. Let us not get hung up on punishing perpetrators, in my view. Instead, let is put a positive spin on it. And use the penalties route judiciously. Hi Some Channels have now started close captioning. DD too had started for news. However, none of the local OTT are doing Audio description. I certainly don't include Netflix which has a decent content in AD. Harish On 18/07/2022 10:53, Ketan Kothari wrote: Dear Team, Excellent initiative. Hi, are these efforts backed by some constitutional or legal framework? I mean, is there some kind of fine or punishment for not meeting the accessibility guideline? Otherwise we would just be going round the bush without any concrete results. Chasing each and every website or mobile app owner and companies would prove to be a night mare. Instead some law in the RPWD act would empower us to challenge for accessibility mandates. Thanks, On 7/18/22, Mahesh S. Picture Smart is a Jaws feature wherein one can submit a picture for analysis. Jaws would provide a discription in the Result Viewer about the image. If there is text in the image, Jaws can report that. To navigate a captcha, move focus to the captcha image, then Jaws key+ Space, then P for Picture Smart, and C for control. In the result Viewer window, enter on More results to get an idea about the captcha text. Often, the captcha letters/digits are provided with spaces in between, do away with it, more often than not, you should be good to go. While captchas are a nightmare from an accessibility point of view, the Jaws Picture Smart can help solve a decent number of those. Hai Team, Good initiative. Many of us are facing several hurdles in applying & getting UDID card. We want to overcome those hurdles. We are unaware to contact anybody to resolve our issues. Hello all, Thank you for your suggestions. We have contacted each one of them flagged by you. Either directly or through some of our friends on this list who we had shared their contact details and email template. Unfortunately, with most of them, either the conversations have hit a roadblock or the service providers have not at all responded. We are figuring out other ways of getting these resolved. In line with the focus area of the present round of initiative on the banking sector, I would like to flag the absolute accessibility disaster that the Axis Bank Axis Mobile android application is. From signing up to using the app basic features, it is very disfunctional. When I had taken an individual initiative of communicating with them, they got back saying its the problem of the 3rd party app(TalkBack) rather than any issue at their end, efferts at telling them that TalkBack is not a 3rd party app and that it is an integral part of Android app, and the problem is at the Axis end wherein they didn't follow Google Accessibility Norms, didn't receive a response. Re: [AI] Minutes - Weekly meeting on July 16, 2022
Hello Ketan, Thankyou for your mail. We have been working with SonyLiv and Hotstar, the 2 most popular OTT platforms in India since the past few months. SonyLiv As per our last telecon, they claim to have made a few remediations in their latest release. Basis our request, they have agreed to share a list of these remediations over email. As soon as we receive, would be happy to share. Hotstar We conducted a sensitization workshop for their team in February 2022, attended by about 180 people. Basis the latest communication, they are in process of making remediations but would take time. We shall update when get a concrete revert from them. Re: [AI] Minutes - Weekly meeting on July 16, 2022
Dear Team, Excellent initiative. Nevertheless, I would like to draw your attention at the fact that several OTT platforms in India are totally inaccessible. I acknoledge that in the priority of things banking and payment apps are higher, we need to pay attention to these aspect of life as well since some of us like to use them. Gradually, we may have to divide time between these areas. I am aware that the work is huge and challenging but that is the reason it becomes more and more interesting. Although I am neither a lawyer nor an accessibility expert, if I can be of any help please do not hesitate.
