Re: [AI] Mac computers

2014-01-18 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi,

Personallly, I prefer PC over Mac as far as accessibility goes. I
found the Mac's interface rather weard to use, though this could be
because of limited usage. No doubt, Voice Over is pretty good, but in
my view, not as good as screen readers like JAWS. Also, I found some
of the applications when used on Mac to be more inaccessible than on
Windows.

Best,

Hi,

It also depends on what tasks you want to perform.
>From what I have heard, voiceover doesn't provide complete support for
PDF and Microsoft office for mac.
So if you want to work on office applications, then windows will be a
better option.
For more information on apple products and podcasts, you can visit
www.applevis.com.
This website is a very good resource for learning to use apple products.
One thing is that you can install windows on mac computer through
bootcam, so you can have best of both worlds.

Thanks and Regards.

Re: [AI] Mac computers

2014-01-18 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hello,

I, for one, have always enjoyed using VoiceOver more than JAWS.
Kartik, I see where you're coming from, because even I was initially unable
to use VoiceOver as effectively as I am able to use it now. JAWS is very
different from VoiceOver, so you will take some time to get used to it.
Otherwise, the Mac is generally more stable than Windows, so VoiceOver rarely
gets stuck anywhere.

That being said, you cannot use applications like Powerpoint and Excel on the
Mac, so you'll have to buy their equivalents from the Mac App Store. Most of
these applications are on the expensive side and are also not as accessible as
MS Office applications.
Feel free to contact me off-list if you wish to discuss this in greater detail.

2014-01-19 Thread Arjun Malhotra
Hi Its better to invest in Mac because any day voice over is better
than Jaws and is also free. There is a kit for voice which you can
install to enhance the accessibility of voice over. If you feel like
using windows you can boot up windows as well on a mac. There you can
use jaws and other office application. I have not used iWork which is
equallent to ms office but iWork on I devices works perfectly and
iOs is mac's stripped down version so I guess voice over will work
with iWork.

Re: [AI] Mac computers

2014-01-19 Thread Amar Jain
Dear Ruchi Aunty,

I have used both Mac, and Windows.

Learning to use Voice Over takes some time, and primarily I say so
because in Voice Over the shortcuts comprise of 3 or 4 keys together.
For example, Control, options, and page down lets you read the next
Paragraph. Whereas in Windows its normally a 2-key press thing with
all screen readers.

Second big consideration for me is that for Voice Over you will not
receive updates unless the system update is available, because it is
built In into the system as a system app. This is a huge consideration
for me, because if there are dynamic changes in some of the apps, you
can expect the screen reader companies to launch a fix. Otherwise you
can always liaise with the support of these company to design a
customized fix for you.

Thirdly, I could not use MS Office and certain third party apps with
Voice Over for advance tasks. In general, some utility apps of third
parties still don't have the accessibility. Of course since Windows
has come a long way, it is better in that sense. So I can hope that in
future Voice Over will be more accessible with third party apps as
well.

Due to the accessibility limitations at the moment, I cannot suggest
you to switch Aarijeet completely on to Mac, however if you want to
give him a flavor and if you decide to let him stay on Mac in future,
then you need to make sure that for the time-being he uses both
Windows (wherever required) and Mac. There is a utility called Bootcam
which lets you install Windows on Mac.

Having said all of this, using Voice Over is not discomforting, once
you get use to of it. But due to the above limitations, we can't
switch to it as a full fledged OS for our needs.

Let me know if you need further help with this.

Regards,
--
Amar Jain.
