As Rick states below,

You need to update the driver for each
printer on the terminal server. Start, control Panel, Printers & Faxes, File,
server properties, Drivers, Add….

When the client connects to the TS they
will see their printer session in their Printers folder.

click the 'Options' button, you can select the 'Local Resources' tab to tell
the remote desktop client to print to the local printer.

I am working on a project where 3 offices will be linked
together via point to point T1's.





The main office will house the server with the two satellite
offices term serving in to do their work.





Each satellite office has a print server with an HP4K
attached that is mapped to the local users workstation.





 





My question is thus... Will the users be able to print from
their term serv session to their local network printer?





Seems like it should, just looking for some input.

You need a GC in the domain that Exchange expects to find it.  You have two
RUS definitions (should) one for the root and one for the other domain.  You
also have DSACCESS which will find the GC's available and pick one.  If it
picked the root GC, it would have some issues, but those issues would be
different than just changing email addresses. If the RUS was the problem,
changing an email address would be an issue until it came online. 

I'm guessing that a bigger problem is DNS.  How many DNS servers are defined
for the Exchange server and where are they located in respect to the
domains?  It's possible it's just a GC/RUS issue though.

I had an incident today that I really can't quite understand - please
help...

 

Background:

I have an empty root domain and a child domain.  The child domain has an
E2K3 server in it.  The E2k3 server has its primary DNS point to a DC/DNS
server in the child domain and its secondary DNS points to the empty root
DC/DNS server.  

 

Situation:

The empty root DC/DNS server had a power failure (we have other servers in
this domain).  During the time when the empty root DC/DNS server was off I
had to make changes to a particular users email address.  I was unable to
make any changes and received an error:  the server is not operational -
Exchange Extension.  After getting the empty root server back online I was
able to make changes and everything is fine.  

 

Probably something simple - BUT WHAT AM I MISSING?

Registering the OID is a best practice and one that many 
who didn't later wish they did.
 
Keep in mind that CSVDE is a utility that will help you 
create or delete objects in the directory only.  It is not intended to be 
used for the modification of any items.  As such, it's very 
limited.
 
LDIFDE (LDIF) format it tougher to work with and can be 
very unforgiving.  
 
For those reasons, I prefer to use vbscript to do 
this.  Typically I prefer to use a csv format because that's what my admins 
are used to manipulating and then just read that in and commit it as needed. 

 
DSADD might be useful to you as well.

similar situation where couple of xp clients just couldn't connect to the
server on times. Norton AV turned out to be a culprit in my situation. The xp machines were
running a very old copy of Norton Anti Virus. I removed the Norton and
installed the latest version of Mcafee and machines never had a problem
again. 





 





I also wouldn't rule
out a possible bad NIC on the boxes.

assigned all the W2K AD roles, RID, Infrast.,PDC, GC, etc. It also houses 90%
of the user data. Some Windows XP machines cannot access the shares from time
to time. You can't event ping the server when this happens. It does not happen
all the time.  The other 2 servers in AD never have the problem. A
reboot of the server normally fixes the problem. Not a lot of activities in the
log files, nothing out of the ordinary.

Could be an answer.  Depends on the rest of the details of their
environment.  Having a single instance of DNS is not a recommended way to go
about things and that may not be the only detail we need to make a
suggestion.

I had an incident today that I really can't quite understand - please

Background:

I have an empty root domain and a child domain.  The child domain has an
E2K3 server in it.  The E2k3 server has its primary DNS point to a DC/DNS
server in the child domain and its secondary DNS points to the empty root
DC/DNS server.  

 

Situation:

The empty root DC/DNS server had a power failure (we have other servers in
this domain).  During the time when the empty root DC/DNS server was off I
had to make changes to a particular users email address.  I was unable to
make any changes and received an error:  the server is not operational -
Exchange Extension.  After getting the empty root server back online I was
able to make changes and everything is fine.  

 

Probably something simple - BUT WHAT AM I MISSING? 

 

Also, on a different note... I was hoping that you all could suggest some
patch management solutions that you use.  I don't know if this request is
bad etiquette or not... if so, please email me offline with info.  We're in
the middle of finding a good patch management solution for our servers and I
was hoping to get some direction on good software from the field.

The usual way to do this
is with Active Directory using either drag-and-drop or the Active Directory
Migration Tool, but if you have two standalone servers with no AD domain, you
can use the AddUsers Resource Kit utility. This utility does not migrate
passwords, however. The best way to do this is to create an Active Directory
domain and use that to replicate user information between the two machines
automatically.

Normally, for a SMTP address on a user object yes.  But in this case,
Exchange couldn't find the domain, right?  The DNS server was down. 

That would be why you would want multiple domain controllers handling DNS.
There is a failover time involved, but the user object address could be
modified if the server can find the domain - in theory.  Some changes rely
on the root to be available as Deji says.  Your particular operation should
have succeeded and likely would have if the infrastructure were available.

You may want to make some changes.

Or a flaky blade in a router.  I've seen a bad router 
blade cause funny network issues "some of the time" more than a few 
times.
 
I know the reboot of the box makes the server look like the 
culprit but you never know.
 
have you looked at a packet trace? What does that 
show?

to the server on times. Norton AV turned out to be a culprit in my situation. 
The xp machines were running a very old copy of Norton Anti Virus. I 
removed the Norton and installed the latest version of Mcafee and machines never

If you start an RDP session on WinXP and click the 
'Options' button, you can select the 'Local Resources' tab to tell the remote 
desktop client to print to the local printer.
 
You'll need to put drivers for the local printer on the

Gc's write their srv
records to the root dns server only. Thats where exchange(and other apps) look
for GC's.





No GC=no exchange.

What are you missing? Nothing. The root DC was not available, and you are
trying to write information to Exchange. The write operation will mostly
happen at the Exchange Org level, depending on what you are writing. Since
the org is at the root of the forest, there was nothing to write to.

Active Roles is a better product in my experience and has had richer
features for a longer time. With Quests addition of Aelita they are
starting to incorporate some great stuff into their products including
into Active Roles. I use DRA as well and it is a very functional product
and should do everything you need it to.

Client rollout you can do it yourself by using unattended setup through the network. 
The only thing that can be a problem is the number of different hardware types. But I 
believe the you can easily simply the installations and standardize them easily (which 
is a good thing I believe). A benefit is in case of reinstallation. In the beginning 
it's a bit searching your way, but once you get hold on the process, it's quiet fun to 
set up :-)

But you will need another solution for the deployment of patches etc. which comes 
afterwards when the clients are already in production, but I believe that you can find 
one which meets your requirements etc. very easy ;-)
