I know there are some people on this list who are good with SMS, so I'll
post an idea of my issue below. The answer may be simple, as I'm really a
beginner in SMS – or may be impossible for all I know L

We have a single SMS server serving clients on 4 sites, some of which are
over slow links (yes, I know, not ideal) which they want to start deploying
software from (it gets worse, doesn't it). The task I was given was that we
use a preexisting replicated DFS structure to keep a copy of the install
software, and expect AD site boundaries to ensure that clients pick up the
files from the central location.

I can't see any way in SMS to set up a remote distribution point (ie
anywhere but the SMS box). Seems no matter what I try, the clients (all
advanced) go back to the DP for the install files and not to the DFS

(note, they use DFS strangely here, they use it as a single domain root
replicating data between sites rather than using it to redirect users to
shares on other servers)

Is there any way to get a single SMS box to cause advanced clients to
install an app from a fileshare local to them?

Thanks in advance

First thing my reference to Microsoft as M$, never thought it would offend someone. I have many friends in Microsoft and even during our personal e-mails I do reference Microsoft as M$ and none ever complained to me and I forwarded Laura's e-mail to them but then again everyone is not the same...anyways I never meant it in a negative way...and e-mail being an impersonal medium all I can do is type...
and if I offended someone I do apologise especially to Laura and other Microsoft employees who are offened by this symbol! :-)

I don't take offense when people refer to Microsoft as "borg" or talk about "drinking the Kool-Aid"; in fact, I have been known to reference both myself. However, I remember the origin of "M$" (unlike, I suspect, some of those who use the phrase and think it's funny), and I think it's ignorant and inappropriate for people to use it on a Microsoft-centric list.

being conciliatory is laudable, but I think you're missing the point.  It's not wether anybody is offended or not -- the question is why does someone come into a peaceful gathering casting offense.  Especially when it's not necessary.  If someone deliberately spits on the dinner table, do you say 'oh, well, he didn't hit any plate, let's just forget it' ?  or even worse, 'he hit someone else's plate -- no worries.'

I would say SMS 2003 SP1 & SP2 is much better product if you know/worked with previous versions of SMS (1.2 & 2.0). Being said that I would not say it has all the feature you will need if you need only inventory then I would say go some other way like Joe (and everyone else mentioned). I can write a long mail because I am managing SMS infrastructure in my company but then again whatever works for my company may not work for yoursmy $0.02! If anyone wants any help

Voice of reason!Exactly, the same things being said about SMS could have been said aboutTivoli and several other "Frameworks".
If all that is wanted/needed is inventory, there is nothing bad aboutputting together a small scripted system to do it. It is targeted, it iseasier to troubleshoot when it doesn't work, and you have full control over
it. Even getting the agents out there is not difficult if you plan for it inyour design, what SMS and other frameworks do for agent deployment is notrocket science and it doesn't all have to be in a home brew or "roll your
own" solution immediately. Now the flip side of the coin What do want to do down the road? Thepoint at which the frameworks start making sense is when you start doing allsorts of automation such as inventory and software delivery and this and
that and some of the other. Then you don't have to invent new solutions foreach. You could always build out your custom solution to be a framework butat that point, you have to weigh in how long it would take to do in some
other framework that already exists. That is tough to do because certainly, with none of the big products is it usually a simple slap it out there andit works unless you have a tiny little configuration that probably can
easily survive without it. I have said it before and I will say it again andagain that MSFT's scaling often has issues, especially around management, there is a lot of if it works for one, then the admins should be able to
figure out how to do it for thousands even if we don't make it very possiblefor them.Oh one of the big issues I tend to have with the massive frameworks (andmonitoring systems). They all usually want to run with domain admin (or
localsystem on every machine including DCs) rights, especially if they areautomatically discovering and deploying themselves. This means severalthings, such as huge possible security hole and you can't delegate them off.
It is another task that domain admins have to be in full control of. If yougive someone else the permissions to run it, then you have just effectivelymade them domain admins as well. I find that unacceptable and would build
every other solution from the ground up to avoid it until the vendorsactually get it through their head, yes including MSFT, that people wanttruly secure systems. Again, this isn't an issue in small environments where
the domain admin is already responsible for everything, but again, in thoseplaces, the frameworks have limited use and life is difficult but definitelypossible without them so the need isn't as great as in a large deployment
where delegation of support tasks is required.joe--O'Reilly Active Directory Third Edition -http://www.joeware.net/win/ad3e.htm

Quite honestly this isn't the first time I have heard this. Many companies have an unnatural aversion to products that are free. They want to know what the catch is and they think that just because they pay for something they are getting better support. Of course that simply means they aren't really reading those EULAs. :)

Writing it this way is very inefficient. It would take x queries to look for each computer where X is the number of OUs you want to check since you can't tell AD "look only in these distinct OUs" unless you can specify one single branch of the hierarchy that contains all of the OUs. As you add more OUs in different branches, the script would get slower and slower.

It would be much more efficient to query the computer and then compare the DN of the computer to the OUs you are interested in. That way most of the work is string comparison on the machine running the script.

Another possible method would be to return all computer DNs for computers in the listed OUs and then compare those with string comparison to the computers you have. This could have implications on your memory allocation though if there are ALOT of machines in those OUs.

For instance, say you have 1000 computers to be checked against 10 OUs in diseparate branches. The initial method you indicate would require 10,000 queries. The first method I mentioned would require 1000 queries. The second method I mentioned would take 10 queries but would probably require more RAM.

Company is large and distributed across the globe in around 66 countries. Here is
other thing, I just joined the team about say 3 months back and found out many
things that need urgent attention to state a few, first was replication which right

is a *nix based DNS. What will be the solution for this problem, I can setup a Windows
DNS and/or I can put a Read-Only Windows DNS inside each big site.

The list of problems can go on and on. Anyways I have same opinion that we need
to fix the current infrastructure first, but making sure that my reasoning is correct.

2005-11-16 Thread Jitendra Kalyankar
This is to check for local computer. What will be the method to check it
against the remote computers. I have a InputBox in the program which
takes input from user, using that string value I want to determine the OU
of remote computer.

Please let me know if you can shed some light on this.

2005-10-20 Thread Jitendra Kalyankar
Wow! Thanks Joe for your reply & also thanks Mark too. I tried my
best to explain to my manager but in vein so I am back to square
one. If my own manager is not comfy with it what will I tell the
Security!

I know the scripts are as dangerous as your util or even more so
but those who know how to go about it, not the one who will be
using it. Yeah it would be even better if your oldcmp would guage
intelligence ;-), can you do that? :-D

Anyways I will continue using your utilities free or not. Care to
shed more light on the question I asked? And I guess its more of
want to know how you did it than what my company requires.
Anyways I will find it out sooner or later. But anyways thanks
very much guys for your help.

Sincerely,
Jitendra Kalyankar

I know about the Oldcmp.exe, but the thing is the tool is really
powerful and I don't want Jr. Sys. Admins doing something or
deleting something that they are not suppose to. And again
I will have to go through the security department route to use
it. Too much hassel

[ActiveDir] Need ADSI Scripting help.

2005-10-20 Thread Jitendra Kalyankar
I am looking for some example script and/or help for the script I am writing for
my company. What I want to achieve is if I run the script against the machine
list which will be in the text file, it should give me the output in
the text file
saying which machine account is enabled, disabled or not found.

I know how to manipulate the text files using fso object but I am not sure
what do I need to use to get the attributes of computer container in AD. Any
help in this regard is highly appreciated and valued.

Please let me know if you need more information abou this.
