[ActiveDir] GPO for standardizing the background/wallpaper

2005-02-07 Thread Pelle, Joe

Hello!

I would like to know if anyone knows how to standardize the
wallpaper/background via GPO on XP workstations?

I want to specify a background color with no wallpaper, no
background, and to not allow the user to change the color or any other
settings.

It looks like I can accomplish most of this if I force a
theme and hide or disable some of the tabs… but I was hoping to not have
to force a theme…

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Under User Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Desktop

Disable Active Desktop
Wallpaper.  This will Turn off wallpaper.

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control
Panel\Display

    Enable Prevent changing
Wallpaper

    Enable Hide appearance and
themes Tab.

As for settings a background color I don’t
know a way to do that in GPO.  But you can set it on a machine and then export
the reg entry and edit so just the background color is in the .reg file and
core  current user.  Then add it to a login script for the users and it should
change their background to the color specified.  Unless someone knows a better
way.

Hi Joe..

If I remember correctly, you need to enable active desktop, and the active
desktop wallpaper...But, put a bogus path to bogus file in there.

I think it comes up with the default blue that way, but not sure if you can
specify a different color.

I think the color would be changed in this way:

To change the background color to that of your choice, you need to alter
the registry:

In Registry navigate to the following key:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors

edit the Background value by typing the Color code in R G B format and
then click OK.

Example: Type 0 0 0 if you want to see a Black background. You can choose
any combination from 0-255

Points to ponder:

If the logon Wallpaper is set, the background Color may not be visible.
So, you must reset the Wallpaper value to a blank string in this key:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop

If the Background value is set under the following Winlogon registry key,
the above setting is ignored. In other words, the Winlogon\Background
value takes precedence over the .DEFAULT..\Background value.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Set it to a bogus location or capture the default blue screen and cut out a
blue dot from the screen and save it (.bmp) and use it.

I used a 2"x3" department logo and centered it on the default blue desktop.
