Everyone,
Can we notify a client that the backup was successful/not successful after
the backup schedule finishes. Say a screen pops up with the message "
Backup's done" or anything thing else which sends a signal to the user
about the Satus of his backup.

Re: ? on export/import using network attached file systems

2001-03-14 Thread Chibois, Herve

Steve,

when doing server2server operation, destination server MUST have a valid
ARCHIVEPOOL with volumes ! Check this

Have you checked the IBM Redbook, It's really helpfull, and your do not need
a third server. I did not managed to do this stuff at the beginning and
after having read the redbook, it works fine.

send me your definitions of server-type node, and devclass

Good luck

I just went out to re-download the 4.1.2 install for Windows NT and the
website states "Note: The V4.1.2 server package has been temporarily
removed. APAR IC29552 is being investigated."

Unless I missed it somewhere, this hasn't been announced yet. Does

DSMAPIPW for UDB backups on Solaris 2.6

2001-03-14 Thread Ross Davies

We are using TSM to back up our DB2 UDB databases on Solaris 2.6 clients.
On the TSM server I have set the password expiry for all of the Solaris
nodes to .
However after a varying number of days the DB2 backups start failing with
137 api return codes
which are fixed by running the dsmapipw password setting job. We ran this
job when
the nodes were first backed up but every so often we have to run it again.
In the manuals it states
that the dsmapipw password setting job only ever needs to be run once. Why
do we have
to continually run this job? I have passwordaccess generate.

TDP Domino on NT GUI inferface (Can backup but can't see files to restore from GUI)

Hi all,
I have this setup:
2 NT servers (Netfinity)(both installed with TSM 3.7):
- 1 is a TSM server 3.7
- both has TDP for Domino
- TSM server attached to the IBM 3447 DLT tape library

On the TSM client:
- the TDP for DOmino (GUI) can do backup and can also
list the backup from the restore option

BUT

On the TSM server:
- the TDP for Domino (GUI) can also do backup BUT
cannot list the backup from the restore option.

On the TSM admin client:
- i check the filespace, there is a backup done from
both TDP for domino since both TDP Domino is backing
up different domains

Can anyone help me on why i can't see my backup via
TDP DOmino GUI on the TSM server?

Thanks and regards

Jeff. I would like to sincerely thank you for that input. You were right
on the money. When IBM configured the library, they configured it as four

Thanks Very Much!!

I have 3 FC connections from my TSM server (AIX) and one from each (3) SDG
into my McData SAN Director (ED-5000). All of those (6) connections are in
a zone by themselves. It sounds to me that Jay's problem might be that the
control path to the 3584 library is going across each LTO drive instead of
just the first drive. But Becky is right... You should see each device on
each fibre channel adapter.

EXAMPLE: In my situation (see original reply below) I see 19 devices (15
LTO drives, 3 LTO libraries, and one 8mm tape drive). Since the 8mm drive
is direct-attached-SCSI, I should see only one. Since I have 3 FCAs into
the SAN, I should see all the other devices three times (once for each FCA).
I really just have one library with five drives in it.

Jay, if you are seeing one library for each drive, I'd start looking at the
library for issues. The 3584 library should use the first drive as the
control path between the library and the operating system. This is fine as
long as that first drive doesn't have SCSI problems... If THAT happens (or
if you lose the FCA that controls that first drive) you could lose the whole
library (like I did last week).

Am I understanding this correctly...? You have ONE 2108 running FOUR drives
that live in ONE library... right...? If so, and you see four libraries AND
four drives, your control path HAS to be going across each drive.

Jeff

Zoning for both the San Data Gateways and the Switches will probably help
that. If there are for example 4 drives on a san data gateway and 2 paths
from the switch to the san data gateway then you will have 8 drives because
each path sees all 4 drives. If you then have 2 fibre adapters going to the
switch then you will see 16 because each adapter sees everything on the
switch. Make sense?

I had that problem when I had too many paths going to the SDG's. I had two
FC Switches tiered together and both switches each had a path to two
separate SDG's. I removed the link between the FC Switches and the problem
went away.

In that case, I was seeing 8 libraries and 8 drives. Now I am down to 4
libraries and 4 drives. It should be 1 library and 4 drives.

We did this about 18 months ago. I wanted to rename the library as well
so we did something like this;

1. Checked out every tape in the library with the "remove=no" option.
- I first generated a list of scratch tapes.
2. Deleted the 9714 library and drives from ADSM and removed the lb0
and mt devices.
3. Shut down ADSM
4. Opened the door on the 9714 and removed all the tapes.
5. Installed the 9710, connected it up and tested it
6. Opened the door to the 9710 and manually put all the data cartridges
into slots. I didn't put the scratch cartridges in, just the data.
7. Rebooted the ADSM server (you could just run cfgmgr, that would work
too)
8. Defined the new lb0 and new drives to AIX (mt0..9, lb0)
9. Started ADSM and defined the new drives and library.
10. Issued a checkin with "search=yes".
11. Opened the door and put the scratch tapes in.
12. Issued another checkin, search=yes for the scratch tapes.

Then we were up and running.

They should be set on the 9710 the same as they are set on the 9714. From
memory it's AUTOCLEAN=YES and FASTLOAD=YES.

Not if you use the "remove=no" and "search=yes" parameters and open the
door.

Re: ? on export/import using network attached file systems

2001-03-14 Thread Steve Bennett

Herve,

Good idea but it does not seem to work. I can get all the defs done and
start an export but it always fails with the errors shown below.

I think I have an idea why it fails so let me explain.

Server1 has a diskpool but no tapepools. I have server1 diskpool migrate
to a virtual volumes in server2's diskpool. The server2 diskpool then
migrates to server2's tapepool, 3494 with two 3590e drives. This has
been working fine for months.

Now I need to get the data off of server1 and into server2 as native tsm
data which is why I am doing the export/import. When I start the export
it has to open a session with server2 to get the data off of the virtual
volumes and then send it back to the server2 diskpool as export data. It
should work but does not.

I have the same kind of problem trying to do reclaimation for the
server1 virtual volumes on server2. It would always fail with some
message indicating that the data was not available. I stopped doing
reclaimations and started using script created move data commands and
they work fine.

I called tivoli one time about the reclaimation problem but they didn't
have a clue what the problem might be.

I just now setup a temporary tsm server called server3 and am doing a
export to it and then a import to server2 from server3. The export is
running now and looks like it will finish ok. Then I'll start the import
and keep my fingers crossed.

Re: TSM 4.1.1, WinNT 4.0 SP6a, San Data Gateway, and IBM 3584 LTO Lib rary

2001-03-14 Thread Caffey, Jeff L.

Jeff

P.S. - Are you in the 817 area code?

Jay,

Does your NT server see 4 or 16 drives...?

I don't know how much help this is, but I'm running a similar environment
here. The only major difference is that my TSM server is an IBM RS/6000
(H80) running AIX 4.3.3... Anyway, within AIX, I see 15 drives and 3
libraries (like this):

rmt15 Available 14-08-00-6,0 Differential SCSI 8mm Tape Drive
rmt0 Available 17-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

rmt14 Available 2D-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

That's not a problem though, because when I set up the 3584 in TSM, I set it
up to use "smc0" for the library and "rmt0, 1, 7, 8, & 14" for the
individual drives. This way, fibre channel adapter 0 runs the first SAN
Data Gateway (IBM 2108 - R03) which controls the first two drives and the
library. FCA 1 runs the next 2108 (and rmt7,8). FCA 2 runs the last 2108
(and rmt14). The only thing left is "rmt15" which is a direct-SCSI
attached 8mm Tape Drive that I use for "mksysb" in AIX.

Although my server that runs TSM is seeing multiple instances of the same
devices, it doesn't affect the way T

I have two FC64-1063 cards in an E4500, connecting to an EMC array. I
installed the driver supplied by EMC (fcaw259). At this moment I'm not
actually sure whether it's connected direct or through a switch - sounds
nuts, I know, but the server isn't in production yet, and the SAN stuff is

I have two other servers (E3500 and a E1) that are SBUS Servers.

Acording to Tivoli web site, all FC Adapters supported in this configuration
are PCI ! ! ! Both SBUS Servers have an JNI FC64-1063 FC Adapter which is

Is anyone using these kind of FC adapters with SAN ? Is there any special
firware or device driver that should be installed in these sun boxes in
order to put these cards to work ? I updated the switch's firmware do level

We have the same problem with one of our Netware 5.0 servers after we
upgraded the Service Pack to 6A. We applied the service pack to all 5.x
boxes (about 10), however only 1 is having problems.

2001-03-14 Thread Davidson, Becky

Zoning for both the San Data Gateways and the Switches will probably help
that. If there are for example 4 drives on a san data gateway and 2 paths
from the switch to the san data gateway then you will have 8 drives because
each path sees all 4 drives. If you then have 2 fibre adapters going to the
switch then you will see 16 because each adapter sees everything on the
switch. Make sense?

Jay,

Does your NT server see 4 or 16 drives...?

I don't know how much help this is, but I'm running a similar environment
here. The only major difference is that my TSM server is an IBM RS/6000
(H80) running AIX 4.3.3... Anyway, within AIX, I see 15 drives and 3
libraries (like this):

rmt15 Available 14-08-00-6,0 Differential SCSI 8mm Tape Drive
rmt0 Available 17-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

rmt7 Available 24-08-01-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt8 Available 24-08-01-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt9 Available 24-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt10 Available 2D-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
smc2 Available 2D-08-01-0,1 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer (FCP)
rmt11 Available 2D-08-01-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt12 Available 2D-08-01-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt13 Available 2D-08-01-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt14 Available 2D-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

Although my server that runs TSM is seeing multiple instances of the same
devices, it doesn't affect the way TSM works because of the way I define the
devices within TSM. I don't know what the difference would be in NT, but
since it's all SCSI over FC I'd like to think that they would at least be
similar among all open systems platforms.

If you REALLY want to see something neat, stop and start the device driver.
Every time you do that, the SCSI ID increments to the next highest number
not used. Our company installed a similar system for a client and
encountered this behavior as well as many other issues. Seems that the
"SCSI drive code has not been written to fully function properly with the
dual fibre path configuration that we have between the SAN Fibre Switches
and the servers. They seem to believe that this dual FIBER path is causing
the drives to get multi-initiated." Weather this has something to do with
multiple libraries showing up, I am not sure but, rest assured, it ain't
helping. Hope this helps a little.

When or why should I license these managed systems for ESSAPPL or ESSR3APPL
?some of these are already licensed to use TDP for R/3 (R3APPL) !
or is it is just to be able to use the FlashCopy feature on the ESS ??

Strangely, *SM's database backup tapes do not show up when you do a Q
VOL xx. This may be true for export tapes as well. You can display
them if you do:

SELECT * FROM VOLHISTORY WHERE VOLUME_NAME='XX'

Of course, replace "XX" with the volser in question.

That's dramatic. If nothing else, check your AIX Error Log, /var/adm/messages,
and other logs. Also inspect your AIX accounting records for the period: if
a shell script was doing the deed, you'll likely see one or more 'rm' commands
reflected. Make sure that /dev is writable only by user root and group
system, which limits the culprits. Assure that your root file system is not
running out of space. Look for unusual logins around that time: you could
have someone maliciously deleting things.

Re: TAPE DEFINITION LOST

2001-03-14 Thread Prather, Wanda

Q libv only shows tapes that are in your library - once DRM spits the tape
out, it won't show up there.

Q vol only shows tapes that are in storage pools.

Your tape is some other type, probably a data base backup tape (since DRM
spits those out along with the copy pool tapes, by default.)

Non-storage pool tapes are defined in the volume history file.

Try this: q volhist type=dbb

It will show up there if it's a data base backup tape.
But don't try to check it in or get it back; a DBB tape should go offsite
along with your copy pool tapes. They are worthless without a data base
backup!

It is probably a database backup tape. Try q drm and the volume name...

You could look in the volume history file too, it would tell you when it was

Scheduled backup failing

2001-03-14 Thread Gregory J. Ira

We've been working on this problem for months now with no success and I'm hoping
someone else has ran into this and found a solution. One of our clients is
trying to do a scheduled backup of a Sun server. It always fails with an
"unable to contact client" error when using prompted or "client has missed it's
scheduled window" when using polling. If we try bringing down and restarting
their server it sometimes works (not often) the first time but never a second.
They are able to initiate a backup manually and have been doing so since we
registered the node, however they would prefer to be able to run the backup
during off-hours. We've upgraded the client on their server twice to no avail.
They've also upgraded the code on their machine a few times as well. We've
added/double checked the DSM_DIR in the environment variables. Examining a core
file dump from their system showed the following messages:

ANS0101E NLInit: Unable to open message repository '%s'.
ANS0110E LogMsg: Unable to open error log file '%s' for output.
ANS0118E LogSchedMsg: Unable to open schedule log file '%s' for output.
ANS0105E ReadIndex: Error trying to read index for message %u from repository
'%s'.
ANS0106E ReadIndex: Message index not found for message %u.
ANSM Error retrieving message %d from dsmclientV3.cat.
ANS0109E ReadMsg: Insufficient memory for allocation of message structure.
ANS0107E ReadMsg: Error trying to read header for message %u from repository
'%s'.

We tried completly wiping out the client and reinstalling it and verifying that
the various items mentioned above (message
repository...dsmsched...dsmerror..etc) were available. We tried changing the
scheduled backup time, used a sniffer to make sure ADSM was reaching the problem
server(it was), and the hand full of usuall checks for simple things like the
scheduler not running etc.. The odd thing is that we can get the schedule
backup to work once every now and then. I should point out that the users
running this server are no rookies to ADSM and have about a dozen other servers
all running with no problems, some with the same exact setup as this problem
server. I found no closed APARs refering to this problem and before I go and
open one with Tivoli I thought I'd give this list a try. Any help would be
apprectiated.

AIX 4.3.2. TSM 3.7.3.6 client 3.7.2 Informix server 7.3.1 UC2

I am having a problem that may or may not be related to TSM... This morning, a
production server running Lawson with an Informix database locked up. All device
files in /dev and two other files in my client BMC SQL-BackTrack for Informix
path were GONE... That meant that database logging stopped... These device files
were:

afcprod2: /usr/bmc/IFX/afcprod # ls -la

prw-r--r-- 1 informix informix 0 Mar 14 12:54 fifo.log

This happened once before, on Nov 22 last year which was also a Wednesday and
also around 7AM in the morning. I
looked at all the scripts being executed from cron and could find nothing that
might be a culprit. Any ideas or suggestions
would be appreciated. TSM is linked through the OBSI module to SQL-BackTrack for

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone had this configuration? I am running
TSM 4.1.1 on a Netfinity 6000R with NT4SP6a. The server is connected to a
FC Fabric consisting of an IBM 2109-S16 FC Switch. This then connects via
longwave fibre to a SDG 2108-G07. Finally we get to attach the 4 tape
drives to the gateway.

My problem is this: I have four tape drives and NT sees four libraries. I
know its a problem with either the SDG or NT driver levels. Here are some
specifics about firmware/driver levels

3584 Library NT Drivers: 1.1.7.6
3584 Firmware: 1200
Qlogic 2200 Firmware: 2.1.16
Qlogic 2200 NT Driver: 7.05.05 NT4 IP
Qlogic Bios: 1.61
SDG Firmware: 0341.31
FC Switch Firmware: 2.1.7

Please let me know if anyone can help me get my TSM server to see 1 library
with 4 drives.

Thanks much,

Jay,

Does your NT server see 4 or 16 drives...?

I don't know how much help this is, but I'm running a similar environment
here. The only major difference is that my TSM server is an IBM RS/6000
(H80) running AIX 4.3.3... Anyway, within AIX, I see 15 drives and 3
libraries (like this):

rmt15 Available 14-08-00-6,0 Differential SCSI 8mm Tape Drive
rmt0 Available 17-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
smc0 Available 17-08-01-0,1 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer (FCP)
rmt1 Available 17-08-01-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt2 Available 17-08-01-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt3 Available 17-08-01-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt4 Available 17-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt5 Available 24-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
smc1 Available 24-08-01-0,1 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer (FCP)
rmt6 Available 24-08-01-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt7 Available 24-08-01-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt8 Available 24-08-01-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt9 Available 24-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt10 Available 2D-08-01-0,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
smc2 Available 2D-08-01-0,1 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer (FCP)
rmt11 Available 2D-08-01-1,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt12 Available 2D-08-01-2,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt13 Available 2D-08-01-3,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt14 Available 2D-08-01-4,0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)

Although my server that runs TSM is seeing multiple instances of the same
devices, it doesn't affect the way TSM works because of the way I define the
devices within TSM. I don't know what the difference would be in NT, but
since it's all SCSI over FC I'd like to think that they would at least be
similar among all open systems platforms.

Thank you,

When I apply the latest PTF which is 3.1.2.90 (Because the old PTF's have
become corrupt) the "cfgserv3.log" tells me to use "UPGRADE DB" command
before I could start the server.

Should I use it before I run the restore db OR afterwards ?

Thanks once again.

Hello Prasanna,

Oups, looks like you are ine kernel-panic-mode !

1) when your reinstall a server and want to restore the DB you
need to REFORMAT it before. You can use only the db-an-log primary volumes.

$ dsmserv format 2 log_primary.dsm log_addon.dsm 2 db_primary.dsm
db_addon.dsm

You SHOULD format 1 volume of each (db_addon log_addon) to give TSM some
"working space"

Then you can restore your DB

$ dsmserv RESTOREDB devc=DLTCLASS volume=SP0169

2) when you manage to restore your DB, check if your db if in "ROLL-FORWARD"
mode.
It could be a reason why your log fills to quickly.

2001-03-14 Thread Barbour, Gabby

Hi,
We moved from a L18 tape library to a L32 library and just opened up the
library and moved the tapes manually. We made sure we kept them in the same
order that we pulled them out. We also looked at how the new library labeled
the slot numbers. We then put the tapes in those slots, and then we did a
audit of the new library. Thanks

Unless I missed it somewhere, this hasn't been announced yet. Does

SAN - FC Adapters doubt ...

2001-03-14 Thread Alexandre Bicas Caldeira

Hi guys,

I'm trying to set up a SAN using two IBM 2109-S16 FC Switch, six TSM Servers
and a 3494 with 10 3590E drives

Four TSM Servers are running smooth (1 M80, 2 Dell with FC Qlogic 2200, 1
SUN450 with FC Qlogic 2200). All of then are PCI Servers.
I have two other servers (E3500 and a E1) that are SBUS Servers.

Acording to Tivoli web site, all FC Adapters supported in this configuration
are PCI ! ! ! Both SBUS Servers have an JNI FC64-1063 FC Adapter which is
simillar do JNI FCI-1063 (the PCI Version which is supported)... The FC
adapter establishes link to the 2109-S16 (steady green light) but it doesn't
find any tape devices...

Is anyone using these kind of FC adapters with SAN ? Is there any special
firware or device driver that should be installed in these sun boxes in
order to put these cards to work ? I updated the switch's firmware do level
2.2.1a but I had no luck... The IBM 2109-S16 is simillar to a Brocade Switch
which is used by EMC... These FC64-1063 adapter is the one that is used by
most of the SBUS Servers... EMC guys, any tips ?!

Thanks you all !

Well, running the backup as root so of course no problems with permissions and
reading /etc/security/passwd. Also, the fs it fails on is /home, so no point
even in excluding /etc/security/*.

I even went as far as thinking about deleting the filespace on TSM, but after
seeing it fail on another TSM server it had never backed up to previously I'm
not convinced it would make any difference...

Re: STK9714 to STK9710 migration

2001-03-14 Thread Cook, Dwight E

In general...
data tapes will be associated with the device class within an atl
in other words you may checkout all libvols, delete all drives, & delete the
library and all is still well !
Then if you define a new library, define your drives back to that new
library, (update your deviceclass for the drives to reference the new
library) then do "checkin libvol" commands with status=private against all
allocated tape volumes you'll be good to go ;-) You will still be left at
getting a list of all unused tapes and checking them in as status=scratch
though.
AND all the used tapes will (should) go back to scratch status when they are
emptied (even though you just checked them in as private but had to 'cause
they had data on them)

Dwight

in moving tsm environments around with 3494's I ended up changing the name
of my libraries and the scratch & private codes used within libraries and
basically did what I've mentioned above... every thing worked fine (but that
was all IBM equipment... S70 servers and 3494 ATLs)

The libraries are very similar, the element numbers are the same! I know
I'll need to verify the scsi address of the drives and I can make them the
same. I should be able to cut over to the new library.
Are there any special configurations on the STK9710 like FAST LOAD, AUTO

I'm running TSM 3.7.4 on AIX 4.3.3. With three scsi adapters. The old
STK9714 has 6 DLT tape drive with 100 cells and the new STK9710 has 10 DLT

I know I'll need to define in AIX and TSM the additional tape drives. But
I'm trying to see the easiest way to get the tapes over because I only have
ONE cap ( mailbox, in/out unit ). It would be very time consuming to
checkout/checkin the 100 tapes from one library to another.

Re: Archive (inspected) vs Backup (inspected)

2001-03-14 Thread Cook, Dwight E

Oh might want to double check that statement...
last I checked it will not use to determine if the actual "archive" will
occur but it WILL (or used to) bind that file to any management class
specified...
example (last time I checked)
if you have the line in your inclexcl.list of
exclude /home/myid/testfile 10yrarch_mc
and you do something like
dsmc archive /home/myid/testfile
it will be bound to your/the 10yrarch_mc management class
haven't checked lately but my last test indicated the above statement is
(was) true

Re: AIX client dumping core during backup

2001-03-14 Thread David Longo

The shadow passwd file on AIX is /etc/security/passwd. I would check all the
permissions etc. on this file with some of my other AIX clients and see if there is
any variance.

I am not aware of *SM doing any checks on files other than - can the user doing
backups access that file and is it newer than the one laready backed , etc. However
maybe it does do something.

Try excluding this file or the /etc/security directory - Exclude /etc/security/*
and see if problem still happens. Does the sched log show what file/filesystem was
being backed up when failure occurs?

A few thoughts.

The signal 11 is obviously a Segmentation Fault, which is a sofware
defect that should be reported to Tivoli Support for resolution.
Looks like it is doing password lookups at the time. It might be
the case it is being thrown off by files in the file system having
a UID but no corresponding user in the passwd file, as is common
when usernames are retired from the passwd file but not all their
files are addressed, to reassign them. You might want to run the
'find' command with the -nouser option and see if there are any
such files, to supplement the problem resolution with that info.

Re: S.O.S ADSM sunk !!

2001-03-14 Thread Chibois, Herve

Hello Prasanna,

Oups, looks like you are ine kernel-panic-mode !

1) when your reinstall a server and want to restore the DB you
need to REFORMAT it before. You can use only the db-an-log primary volumes.

$ dsmserv format 2 log_primary.dsm log_addon.dsm 2 db_primary.dsm
db_addon.dsm

You SHOULD format 1 volume of each (db_addon log_addon) to give TSM some
"working space"

Then you can restore your DB

$ dsmserv RESTOREDB devc=DLTCLASS volume=SP0169

2) when you manage to restore your DB, check if your db if in "ROLL-FORWARD"
mode.
It could be a reason why your log fills to quickly.

S.O.S ADSM sunk !!

2001-03-14 Thread Ghanekar, Prasanna

Being a novice, I'm seeking out the Expert ADSM community to help me get
back my Flagship above water.

Here's the snapshot of things:
ADSM Server running on WINNT 4 crashed due to Recovery Log crash.
Expire inventory schedule brought down the server as it filled the recovery
log, asked for Tape, then filled one Tape and started asking for another one
and there was no tape . Log kept on increasing and finally took down the
server.

Initially tried Restore Db but failed after starting a "Re-Do" on the
recovery log.
Also got the event id: 6 in the nt event log. about another server being run
at the same time.

Finally re-installed the server and applied last ptf (3.1.2.90), server
tells me to use Upgrade DB to bring the database to most current version.
Don't know when to use it ?

Then, replaced the core four files with the original configuration and
issued Restore db (Point in time) command to get the database back. Database
restore completes but when I issue: dsmservr command after that, it says
ADSM server must be restored before it can be started. I don't know when to
insert these files in the new installation.

If I try to do a restore the database without using point in time option, it
restores, begins server recovery, recovery log mount, starts redo for the
log and fails at certain point.

Need serious HELP to get the server back U

Your Help is greatly appreciated..

Thanks for your time.

I used TSMCLEAN on 2 different NT 4 server clients. The only issue I had
was users complaining of the performance hit because I ran it during the
work day. It basically impacts the system the same as a real backup
would, except I had about 20 times the normal backup amount because of all
the corrupted files.

I read all the instructions and readmes several times before I attempted
anything.

Hello everybody.

I'm having a number of NT-servers (clients) and Win2000 Servers that I
guess would
be best to install/run this patch on.
Does anybody have any experiences of using the Client-Patch 4.1.2.12 on
Win32 ?

I also have a few Ms Clusterservers ( NT 4.0 ) that I also have to do
this on.
Are there anyone of You that has done this - or has any ideas according
to this ?

Are there anything "special" to concider when running the TSMCLEAN.

I would very much like it to be OK "on the first try" - this time;-)

The client is running AIX 4.3.3, and running TSM client version
4.1.2.0. The server in my case is also an AIX host running AIX 4.3.3 and TSM
server version 4.1.1.0. Our library is also a 3494 with 3590E drives. We
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client but it did not resolve
the problem.

The odd thing is that during the day, many archive sessions are
pushed to TSM with no problem, but the scheduled incremental backup causes
this error once in a while. Stopping and starting the daemon on the client
fixes it for a few days, but it inevitably comes back. I have not opened a
case with Tivoli on this because I have other priorities, but I too find it
perplexing...

This is a 4.1.2.0 client, but 3.7 showed the exact same behavior.

Anybody can help me understand what's up? Other AIX machines are ok.
Servers are also AIX with TSM 3.7.3.8 (and by the way, should I try
upgrading them? We are already planning to go to 4.1 sometimes before
summer), 3494 libraries with 3590E.

Thanks in advance, bye,

Hi everybody,

I updated several NT Boxes from ADSM 3.1 to TSM 4.1.16. After a reboot I
saw
in the eventlog an error something like : "PERFLIB: DSMCPERF.DLL is
missing".
In this case,I went to the following registry entry, and I`d deleted the
'open'
and 'library' key.

H KEY LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENT CONTROL SET/SERVICES/EVENTLOG/SYSTEM/TSM

After that, the error message disapears. But : Is this ok ? What is the
impact
of doing so? Has anybody experiance in this ?

STK9714 to STK9710 migration

2001-03-14 Thread Galvin, Laura L.

Hi,
I'm in the process of upgrading my STK library. I currently have a STK9714
and I'm getting a STK9710. Will I be able to move the tapes from on library
to another? Or do I need to define another library, checkout the tapes from
the old STK9714 ( 100 tapes ) and check them in to the new library STK9714.
The libraries are very similar, the element numbers are the same! I know
I'll need to verify the scsi address of the drives and I can make them the
same. I should be able to cut over to the new library.
Are there any special configurations on the STK9710 like FAST LOAD, AUTO
CLEAN etc. That should be set, does any one know?

I'm running TSM 3.7.4 on AIX 4.3.3. With three scsi adapters. The old
STK9714 has 6 DLT tape drive with 100 cells and the new STK9710 has 10 DLT
tape drive with 300 cells.

I know I'll need to define in AIX and TSM the additional tape drives. But
I'm trying to see the easiest way to get the tapes over because I only have
ONE cap ( mailbox, in/out unit ). It would be very time consuming to
checkout/checkin the 100 tapes from one library to another.

Thank you,
Laura

Netware client problems

2001-03-14 Thread Jim Kirkman

Howdy,

NW Client 4.1.1_18 talking to an ADSM 3.1.2.50 server on OS\390.

I keep getting a login prompt when the scheduler kicks off, or if I run a
manual. I'm using the fully qualified login name, and the pwd file has been
established in two of the three instances. I type in username and password and
get the error "Login denied to NewWare Target Service Agent 'blahblah'.
However, the backup runs.

Any ideas? It's like I'm getting access to the server and context, but not the
tree.

Re: Backup Sets

2001-03-14 Thread arhoads

A backupset is the first self-discovery media created by Tivoli: you can
restore any part or all. The clients have been updated to understand
the format of the backupset directly.

Experiences from Client-Patch 4.1.2.12 ( and on Ms Clusterserver ) ?

2001-03-14 Thread Gunnar Uhr

Hello everybody.

I'm having a number of NT-servers (clients) and Win2000 Servers that I
guess would
be best to install/run this patch on.
Does anybody have any experiences of using the Client-Patch 4.1.2.12 on
Win32 ?

I also have a few Ms Clusterservers ( NT 4.0 ) that I also have to do
this on.
Are there anyone of You that has done this - or has any ideas according
to this ?

Are there anything "special" to concider when running the TSMCLEAN.

I would very much like it to be OK "on the first try" - this time;-)

Regards

Gunnar

TSM 4.1 upgrade:PERFLIB error DSMCPERF.DLL is missing

2001-03-14 Thread Holger Bitterlich

Hi everybody,

I updated several NT Boxes from ADSM 3.1 to TSM 4.1.16. After a reboot I saw
in the eventlog an error something like : "PERFLIB: DSMCPERF.DLL is missing".
In this case,I went to the following registry entry, and I`d deleted the 'open'
and 'library' key.

H KEY LOCAL MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENT CONTROL SET/SERVICES/EVENTLOG/SYSTEM/TSM
CLIENT PERFORMANCE

After that, the error message disapears. But : Is this ok ? What is the impact
of doing so? Has anybody experiance in this ?

Regards HBit

Re: Oracle Database Backups

2001-03-14 Thread MC Matt Cooper (2838)

look at copygroup MODE parameter, ABSOLUTE vs MODIFIED. This works for a
non-DB files just fine for controlling FULL vs INCREMENTAL. I do not know
how well it fits with a DB. I would suspect you would have to go through an
API to do an incremental.

Given the following scenario,
Full DB backup on SAT
Incremental backup on Sun-Fri

If I have a huge database, say 2 TB, Is this a typical scenario as far as
schedules are concerned?

Archive (inspected) vs Backup (inspected)

2001-03-14 Thread Gerrit van Zyl

Hi all TSM'ers,

TSM Client 3.1.0.8 on NT
TSM Server 3.1.2.58 on AIX

I have the following scenario and hope someone can explain this to me.
When archiving we get the following:

03/11/2001 03:54:57 ANE4952I (Session: 7758, Node: NTSRV01) Total
number of objects inspected: 461,739
03/11/2001 03:54:57 ANE4953I (Session: 7758, Node: NTSRV01) Total
number of objects archived: 411,368

When we do a incremental backup we get the following:

03/12/2001 22:57:23 ANE4952I (Session: 8193, Node: NTSRV01) Total
number of objects inspected: 410,653
03/12/2001 22:57:23 ANE4954I (Session: 8193, Node: NTSRV01) Total
number of objects backed up:3,414

Why is there suce a huge difference between objects inspected in the two
cases (5 objects)? The files were not deleted!! This is the same
everytime.

Is archiving inspecting files differently than incremental backup?

Thanks and regards.

Re: ? on export/import using network attached file systems

2001-03-14 Thread Chibois, Herve

Hi Steve,

I did the trip last month for one of my customer.
Do not need to export to a shared FS, you can directly
try "Server-to-server" export. It works fine.
The "key-step" (which I forgot to do the first time) is the
"loopback" devclass.

You can have a look at this piece of redbook : SG245244.PDF, §4.11.2 page
130

Here is the steps I did for my customer.

1) export node from server1 to server2 (on a diskpool)
2) import node from server2 to server2 (that is the trick !)

Good luck
Rv
