There is no list of file identification on the data tape. That's why TSM
DB is designed for. If the DB does not point to data in the tape you can
guess but not be sure what actually is there.
How did you reached this point (DELete VOLume DIScard=Yes ??) ? If this
did not happen as result of human error let all us know.

I ran the old adsmtape utility against a DLT4 TSM 4.1.5 tape and a list of

How do I know what tape/s my data is on?

2002-04-12 Thread Roy Lake

Ok guys,

Here is a puzzler for you.

Lets say that I have a primary tape pool, but I DONT have a secondary
pool. (IE data ONLY goes to tape once with NO second copy). We then send
those tapes offsite. (This saves us valuable space in the tape
library).

One month later, a customer asks for an archive to be retrieved from
those tapes.

How do I know what tapes to retrieve? - These archives would have built
up over a period of time, so there may be more than 10 tapes offsite and
I dont want them all!!.

Is there a way that I can find out which set of tapes my archived data
is on? - Bearing in mind that if reclamation is also run of this pool,
then the data may possibly be moved around on a regular basis.

Any help would be greatfully recieved.

Redirecting Commands in Scripts

2002-04-12 Thread Gerhard Wolkerstorfer

Hello all,
I found questions like this in the archives, but no answers..

One more try =
I want to run a script, where one line should look like this:
QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM
where DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM is a S390 Filename I want to take to the OFFSITE
Location.
(This Command works great on the command line, but I want to have it in a
script!)

However - I tried to do it like this:
def script test desc='Test'
upd script test QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT

Result:
ANR1454I DEFINE SCRIPT: Command script TEST defined.
ANR2002E Missing closing quote character.
ANS8001I Return code 3.

Any hints how to route an output to a file in a script ?
I guess, the problem is, that TSM wants to direct the Output of the Update Stmt
to a file - and when doing this, one quote is missing, of course

We are running TSM 3.7.5 on S390 (I know, not supported, but I guess this should
work on all versions)

Re: How do I know what tape/s my data is on?

2002-04-12 Thread Salak Juraj

Roy,

I hesitate to answer your question,
because it would support you in a VERY BAD practise.

I find operation with only single copy of data simply irresponsible.

The costs for second copy are very low - only couple of tape media.

Do rethink this design, consider creating backup pool.
This makes it possible to keep tapes from primary pool
unloaded from library but still on-site,
thus eliminating your find-correct-tape problem.

There is a workaround the problem but it is ugly and can work for small

Look for my post on the thread SQL query - GROUP on derived value? from 25.09.2001.

Re: Monthly Backups, ...again!: The Real Issues

2002-04-12 Thread Zlatko Krastev

We are not calling them exactly Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 but are using
the same rules for collocation. There is a slight modification - you can
manually collocate by creating Class 3a, Class 3b, etc. So the tape pool
for Class 3something would not be too big and on restore you will need
less tapes. And Class 3z may become Class 4 with
all-those-absolutely-non-critical-nodes and unlimited number of tapes in
it.

I also enjoy debates. And many threads on this list are about *proper* TSM
(now ISM) setup. I have seen a customer using Oracle database through ODBC
as plain dBase files with own relations logic on top of this. Guess what
was the performace. From this I cannot say Oracle is abnormally slow
database, right? Weird setup does not mean the product is bad.
That's why for example Incremental-forever does not work with TDP (now ISM
for ...) products. If MS Exchange had adopted this nice backup technique
and APIs allow some kind of mapping of IS to filespace name, Mailboxes to
directories and folders to files ... We could have incremental-forever
with restore granularity down to a folder and subfile backup can help us
to transfer only new/deleted messages. Or something even better. Same for
Oracle for example - instances may be same type of object as filespaces,
tablespaces - directories and tables vs files.
BTW: explaining to customer I prefer to use term object pointing that
for B/A client this is an ordinary file but for TDP is application
dependant. And from this point of view I explain why many good sides of
Progressive Backup go away.

Zlatko Krastev
IT Consultant

P.S. And completely new things demand from us to change our way of
thinking. Same as a century ago there was speed limit for cars of 5 km/h
and a man with red sign ought to walk in front of the car to warn the
public and prevent horses to panic!!! I am not kidding.

Subject:Re: Monthly Backups, ...again!: The Real Issues

I enjoy TSM debates, but one that has not sold me yet is this particular
one. Yes, I come from a different environment (than Incremental-forever).
One of the biggest drawbacks of the old ADSM was the abnormal slow
restores
and this has been notified by a collegue of mine of why his previous job
did not get ADSM back in the early 90's. My suspicion was this
Incremental-forever and here I see why. It all relies on the collocate
issue. If you have numerous tapes and numerous drives than collocate will
make Incremental-forever a quck restore. I started with 2 drives 80
clients and 500 tapes leading to no-collocate. When restoring 2 GB+
restores that were spread out over 70-100 tapes this took almost 8 hours
(note this took about 1 year to get to 70-100 tapes). At our DR test we
noticed a diffence of 6 times a normal restore for no-collocate versus a
backupset. But on the other hand I brought that restore time down when
splitting the restore into 5 separate restores for 5 tape drives (I
currently have 6 drives). So the no-collocate will work if the right
amount of tape drives are available (our 3570 are pretty expensive). Now
in the real world you usually have 1-2 tape drives for restores
(dedicated)
and you cannot afford to send 80 tapes off every night for collocate, so
what we are gravitating to is a class1, class2, and class3 system. class1
will be our DRM critical restore with collocate onsite and offsite, class2
our noncritical but high restore class with collocate onsite and
noncollocate offsite. and then the good class3 with nocollocate onsite or
offsite. The monthlys or Absolutes will be used to stop the spreading of
info over 70 -100 tapes. It may not be true, but I seem to see the more
reclamation the more spreading of info. and I would have thought that the
reclamation would bring info closer together. All it takes is one time of
getting burned with the 70-100 tape restore spread. We have presently
moved data from one server to another 7 GB and used TSM to do this. If the
manual full had not be done the night before (which has happened) then I
still be restoring as we speak. There are more good things about fulls
than meets the eye. Now I know not all restores are 2 GB+ but I do see
more and more and we will all have to deal with it in our own ways. Just
1
way of dealing with it. Not the only but a way is better than no way.

2002-04-12 Thread MC Matt Cooper (2838)

I am going over ESCON. I have an issue with TSM that I would watch TSM use
more and more CPU and actually do less and less. I found that stopping and
starting TSM on a weekly basis would get me past it. I have sent them dumps
and logs. They said to STOP draining my DISK pool to 0. SO I am trying
that. Anyway, my point is, try bringing TSM down and Up and check the
throughput then. It may also be worth your time to check and make sure that
TSM is in the proper Work Load Manager service class (of course that is only
an issue if the machine is running 100%).

we now have a 4.2.1.32 client to address APAR IC33211 (The TSM V4.2

Re: TSM DB Fullbackup 19GB takes 4 hours on OS/390 VTS

2002-04-12 Thread Adolph Kahan

Why are you writing a 19GB dataset to the VTS? The VTS is designed to
handle small datasets, usually a few 100MB and at most what you can fit
on one 3490 cartridge. To do this backup the VTS will have to mount 19+
scratch volumes. The VTS will also need space on the VTS disk cache for
such a large dataset, so you could have the VTS spending time trying to
offload data from the disk cache to the 3590 stacking tapes. This could
be slowing down your backup. What else is happening on the VTS when you
are doing this backup? Which model of VTS do you have?

Dear *SM Gurus

The TSM DB Fullbackup (19GB) takes about 4 hours on OS/390 with VTS. I
haven't found any descriptions for parallelisation, eg. maxpr or mountp.
Is it in the tec. nature, the DB will be backed up in sequenz?

Great! One I can finally answer since I just got help on this. I tried the

Subject: Redirecting Commands in Scripts

Hello all,
I found questions like this in the archives, but no answers..

One more try =
I want to run a script, where one line should look like this:
QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM
where DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM is a S390 Filename I want to take to the OFFSITE
Location.
(This Command works great on the command line, but I want to have it in a
script!)

However - I tried to do it like this:
def script test desc='Test'
upd script test QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT

 Subject: TSM db backup.

 Hello all,

Let me start out by saying that I am a new subscriber to this list, so
sorry if these question have been posted before. I have recently set
up a TSM server. The server and client code is at 4.2.1. I have the
clients backing up to the server and files going only to disk storage
pool only for the time being, until I get my tape drives. The problem
I am having is with my database backups. I set up the dbbackuptrigger
to backup the database at 75%. Now my problem, whenever I set logmode
to rollforward, TSM automatically wants to do the first dbBackup which I
assume would be a full backup. After the process gets kicked off, the
20 gig tape just gets spit out. Even when I set the logmode to normal
and try a manual backup db devclass=8mmdb type=full scratch=yes. When
I run the command the tape reads, rewinds, and ejects without the
backup. This is very frustrating and is probably something very
obvious, but I can't figure it out. Can anyone tell me what I may be
 doing wrong?

 Pat,

We been using a all disk backuppool for a number of years now. It's grown
to 3TB (4 expansion cabinets with 14 73GB drives each and each set to raid
5), we just keep adding disk expansion to server as we need more storage.
We use a small LTO library for the copypool. We backup 360 servers (80 to
100 GB total) nightly and growing. The TSM database is 10GB sitting on
raid 10 with 15K rpm drives (very fast) , i also defrag the DB monthly.
This is a dream setup and works very well, restores run in the blink of a
eye. I run the TSM server by myself as a part-time duty.

I would suggest just growing your disks storage on your backuppool to at
least 1 TB to keep backups and restore running fast, allowing older data
to migrate to your existing tape library. Now a days disks have both a
performance and price advantage over tape.

If you have any other question please let me know.

starting TSM on a weekly basis would get me past it.

My 80% full 25gb FULL DB backup takes 1hr 20 minutes on 9672-x57 going to a
9840 tape. What else is going on in your TSM system at the time?
Expiration processing slows it down quite a bit. Have you gone through the
normal steps of maximizing the throughput on your TSM system?

Dear *SM Gurus

The TSM DB Fullbackup (19GB) takes about 4 hours on OS/390 with VTS. I
haven't found any descriptions for parallelisation, eg. maxpr or mountp.
Is it in the tec. nature, the DB will be backed up in sequenz?

Re: Redirecting Commands in Scripts

2002-04-12 Thread Christo Heuer

Hi Gerhard,

Is there any specific reason you want to make use of
a script?
Seeing that Tim Williams already answered your question
you should in any case look at doing what you want in a
different way.
What we do - which will give you exactly what you are
trying to achieve right now - is to run a batch job
with IKJEFT01 utility - making use of an admin cmd
line - and issue the QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM
command.

Let me know if there is something specific I'm missing
in this case - else play around with batch jobs that
can be scheduled or run on demand.

Cheers
Christo

Hello all,
I found questions like this in the archives, but no answers..

One more try =
I want to run a script, where one line should look like this:
QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM
where DSM.OUTPUT.QSYSTEM is a S390 Filename I want to take to the OFFSITE
Location.
(This Command works great on the command line, but I want to have it in a
script!)

However - I tried to do it like this:
def script test desc='Test'
upd script test QUERY SYSTEM DSM.OUTPUT

Result:
ANR1454I DEFINE SCRIPT: Command script TEST defined.
ANR2002E Missing closing quote character.
ANS8001I Return code 3.

Any hints how to route an output to a file in a script ?
I guess, the problem is, that TSM wants to direct the Output of the Update
Stmt
to a file - and when doing this, one quote is missing, of course

We are running TSM 3.7.5 on S390 (I know, not supported, but I guess this
should
work on all versions)

Errors Using EBU For v7.3.4 Database On AIX 4.3.3

2002-04-12 Thread Brian Dade

Hi,

I have an oracle database v7.3.4. I'm also using EBU v2.2 and TDP v2.1.10. I'm
pretty sure that I have all of my environment variables set correctly, including
$NSR_CLIENT for the oracle id. Although I opened a tar with Oracle Support and

oracle as an admin, they're not responding to my questions.
I also added the oracle id as an admin user in the Tivoli Server Administration

Re: Redirecting Commands in Scripts

2002-04-12 Thread Jane Bamberger

HI,

If you open up dsmc with -comma parameter, all output will be put in a csv
file - perfect for perl scripting (and you can redirect your output). We do
that every night to mail out a report of backups nightly - also to
automatically mail a report of tapes ejecting for offsite storage , and then
an hour later, automatically ejects them.

dsmadmc -comma -id=admin -pa=password select a.domain_name,a.description,
a.num_nodes,b.node_name from domains a,nodes b where a.domain_name =
b.domain_na
me order by 1,3 | sed 1,9d | grep -v ANS8002I | grep -i -E [a-z]
${DATADIR}/client.table.data

(scripts supplied by Suad Musovich)

Hope that helps,

Jane

Re: 3494 library swap out.

2002-04-12 Thread Bill Boyer

Maybe more of a generic way that doesn't depend on any specific OSuse a
SQL command:

select 'checkout libv ' || trim(library_name) || ' ' || trim(volume_name) ||
' checkl=no rem=no' from libvolumes

and pipe this to a file. You can then run it in as a MACRO libr Lindsay
suggests. You may have to SET SQLDISPLAYMODE WIDE to get it all on one line.

This doesn't rely on catawk.MSWord...or any utility. Just a TSM
admin client.

There's more than one way to skin a cat! :-) Whatever you're comfortable
with. Myself, with going to different client sites with different systems, I
just don't like to come to rely on a solution on a particular platform. No
offense intended!

I guess different people like different tools...I'm a command-line bigot.

The idea of turning a list of volumes into a script is a very good idea.
Here's a unix-ified way to do it for those who will, maybe faster:

1. Obtain a list of volumes (or stgpools, or...) into a file, say,
/tmp/vols
2. cat /tmp/vols | awk '{print checkout libv library_name $1 checkl=no
rem=no}' /tmp/macro
  vol name is here ^^
3. dsmadmc -id=... -pas=... -itemcommit macro /tmp/macro
itemcommit means if one line fails, don't roll back the
whole script

Not trying to one-up you, Tab - people more comfortable with MS Word should
use it.
The idea is great. I often see people doing stuff like this manually, and
it makes me cringe.
Thanks for the post.

 Geoffrey,

Whenever I have to do similar operations on lots of volumes, I use my word
processor's (MS Word in this case) mail merge feature to help. The
 sequence goes like this.

 1. Obtain a list of volumes to be processed. If the volume name is the
only thing that will change, you can save to a text file. But text files
only accommodate one variable. If more variables (fields) are needed, use
 the native WP doc format.

 2. Select the file from step 1 as the data source.

 3. Create the master document with the desired command line like:
 checkout libv library_name [volume] checkl=no remove=no

where volume is the merge field to be used for the final document.

 4. Merge the data. You will end up with a document that has a line from
 step 3 for each volume.

 5. Because that document will be in the native WP format, do a Save
 As...text of the document.

 6. Reopen the text version of the document. You will have a script.

 7. Paste that text document's contents into the text entry window of the
Create Script page of the TSM web client. The final result will be a
server script consisting of the command from step 3 for each volume.

 8. Execute the server script in TSM.

I know this sounds a bit complicated, but once you've done it a time or
two, you can create in less that five minutes scripts that process
 thousands of volumes.

This technique was vital when I was doing our data reorg after the library
upgrades and I had to Move Data the contents of hundreds of tapes.

 Good luck.

On Monday IBM will be removing a leased 3494 and installing a replacement
3494. The library is shared with MVS but MVS has it's own set of tapes and
exits ignore my tapes(TSM 4.2.1.9 on AIX 4.3.3) when they are inserted.

It's been sugested I checkout all of my tapes, some 800 or so, probably
with a remove=no since a 10 slot I/O port would slow things down. IBM says
they need to remove all the tapes so they can re-level the library once
 they
 put it together.

So now questions: (I am not concerned with the MVS side of things since
someone else takes care of that.)

Do I really need to do this?

If yes, is there an easy way to do this or amI going to have to struggle
 through it?

How about getting them back in/available?

Should I be doing any TSM inventory?

Maybe more of a generic way that doesn't depend on any specific
 OSuse a
 SQL command:

 select 'checkout libv ' || trim(library_name) || ' ' ||
 trim(volume_name) ||
 ' checkl=no rem=no' from libvolumes

and pipe this to a file. You can then run it in as a MACRO libr Lindsay
suggests. You may have to SET SQLDISPLAYMODE WIDE to get it all
 on one line.

This doesn't rely on catawk.MSWord...or any utility. Just a TSM
 admin client.

There's more than one way to skin a cat! :-) Whatever you're comfortable

I guess different people like different tools...I'm a command-line bigot.

The idea of turning a list of volumes into a script is a very good idea.
Here's a unix-ified way to do it for those who will, maybe faster:

 1. Obtain a list of volumes (or stgpools, or...) into a file, say,
 /tmp/vols
 2. cat /tmp/vols | awk '{print checkout libv library_name $1 checkl=no
 rem=no}' /tmp/macro
   vol name is here ^^
 3. dsmadmc -id=... -pas=... -itemcommit macro /tmp/macro
itemcommit means if one line fails, don't roll back the
 whole script

Not trying to one-up you, Tab - people more comfortable with MS
 Word should
 use it.
The idea is great. I often see people doing stuff like this manually, and
 it makes me cringe.
 Thanks for the post.

  Geoffrey,

Whenever I have to do similar operations on lots of volumes, I
 use my word
processor's (MS Word in this case) mail merge feature to help. The
  sequence goes like this.

  1. Obtain a list of volumes to be processed. If the volume name is the
only thing that will change, you can save to a text file. But
 text files
only accommodate one variable. If more variables (fields) are
 needed, use
  the native WP doc format.

This technique was vital when I was doing our data reorg after
 the library
upgrades and I had to Move Data the contents of hundreds of tapes.

  Good luck.

The other tapes are working without problems. Has someone any suggestion?

2002-04-12 Thread Andrew Raibeck

H... not a good sign.

I downloaded the driver this morning and verified the install myself, and
it went alright.

Do you have an existing ODBC driver installed? If so, which version?

I suspect that this could be an issue with removing the older ODBC driver.
Try this:

1) From Add/Remove Programs, remove the old ODBC driver.

2) You may get a prompt similar to the above. If so, go get the install
package for that driver, and extract the install image (but don't run
setup). Then try the uninstall again. If prompted, point to the .msi file
in the old driver's install image (the one you just unpacked).

3) If that works, then try installing the new driver.

Let me know how this goes.

3494 library swap out

Ok, lots of help here from Bill, Lindsay and Tab, and I appreciate it very
much. Now here is a stab at the steps I need to take. Since I'm not much of
a script/programmer I'd appreciate any help in correcting mistakes I've
made.

Note: This will be done from an AIX console on the TSM server.

Step1: SET SQLDISPLAYMODE WIDE

Step2:  select 'checkout libv ' || trim(library_name) || ' ' ||
trim(volume_name) || ' checkl=no rem=no' from libvolumes  /tmp/vols

Step3: cat /tmp/vols | awk '{print checkout libv library_name $1 checkl=no
rem=no}' /tmp/macro

Step4: dsmadmc -id=... -pas=... -itemcommit macro /tmp/macro

The output of the file in step2 goes like this:

checkout libv 3494LIB U8 checkl=no rem=no
checkout libv 3494LIB U00026 checkl=no rem=no
checkout libv 3494LIB U00244 checkl=no rem=no
checkout libv 3494LIB U00302 checkl=no rem=no
And so on and so on.

I'm sure my step3, which I took direct from the email Lindsay sent, needs
work.

A little help..again please.

Restore NSS data, Netware 5

2002-04-12 Thread Richard Seifert, Jr

Hello all,
I am new to the list, so please forgive any improprieties. I promise I
will learn!

The environment is TSM server 4.1.4.0 running on an AIX box (4.3
something, I think). Client machine is a server running Netware 5,
service pack 3, with TSM client 4.1.3.0. This is a machine that I have
just recently adopted(?) and am trying to do a restore on. The problem
is that the data to restore is on an NSS volume and the restore just
will not work. I have tried restoring to the NSS volume, to another
non-NSS volume on the same server and to a non-NSS volume on a different
server (NW5, SP5, TSM 4.1.3.0). No luck anywhere. The messages I get
back are:

04/11/2002 14:25:35 (TSA500.NLM 5.1 258) This program has encountered a
buffer underflow and cannot get the entire field.
 ** Unsuccessful **
04/11/2002 14:25:35 ANS4024E Error processing 'USERS:/TEST.TXT': file
write error

Has anyone else seen this, or anything like it? I think I have narrowed
it down to a problem directly related to restoring NSS data. IBM is
telling me that is has to do with the version of the TSA500.NLM in the
service pack. Getting the same error when trying to restore to the
alternate server, with a newer service pack, makes me question that
suggestion.
I really appreciate any help anyone can offer. I have searched the
archives, BTW, and not come up with anything particularly helpful.
Thanks.

Ok, lots of help here from Bill, Lindsay and Tab, and I
 appreciate it very
much. Now here is a stab at the steps I need to take. Since I'm
 not much of
a script/programmer I'd appreciate any help in correcting mistakes I've
 made.

Note: This will be done from an AIX console on the TSM server.

 Step1: SET SQLDISPLAYMODE WIDE

 Step2:  select 'checkout libv ' || trim(library_name) || ' ' ||
 trim(volume_name) || ' checkl=no rem=no' from libvolumes  /tmp/vols

 Step3: cat /tmp/vols | awk '{print checkout libv library_name
 $1 checkl=no
 rem=no}' /tmp/macro

 Step4: dsmadmc -id=... -pas=... -itemcommit macro /tmp/macro

The output of the file in step2 goes like this:

 checkout libv 3494LIB U8 checkl=no rem=no
 checkout libv 3494LIB U00026 checkl=no rem=no
 checkout libv 3494LIB U00244 checkl=no rem=no
 checkout libv 3494LIB U00302 checkl=no rem=no
And so on and so on.

I'm sure my step3, which I took direct from the email Lindsay sent, needs
 work.

 A little help..again please.

Re: TSM V5.1

2002-04-12 Thread Andrew Raibeck

Yes, you've discovered a new feature. If you are using PRESCHEDULECMD,
then presumably you have some operation that you wish to complete prior to
the scheduled TSM operation (i.e. shut down a database before incremental
backup runs). In 5.1, we changed PRESCHEDULECMD so that if the command
does end with return code 0, then the scheduled operation will not run.
This change was based on user requirements.

From the use rmanual, in the section on what's new in 5.1:

==
Reliable, consistent, and documented return codes
have been added to the command line client and the
scheduler. This facilitates automation of client
operations via user-written scripts. By using the
QUERY EVENT command with the FORMAT=DETAILED
option, administrators can now distinguish between
scheduled backups that completed successfully with
no skipped files and scheduled backups that
completed successfully with one or more skipped
files. Also if you use the processing option
preschedulecmd to run a command, and that command
returns a non-zero return code, the scheduled
event will not run. This ensures that scheduled
events will not run if prerequisite commands do
not complete successfully. See Return Codes from
the Command Line Interface,
Preschedulecmd/Prenschedulecmd, and
Postschedulecmd/Postnschedulecmd for more
information.
==

Alternatively, if the command does not need to complete prior to running
the scheduled operation, you can use PRENSCHEDULECMD, which runs
asynchronously, and whose return code is not tracked.

preschedulecommand scripts actually return an error level (I'm seeing

Yes, and be sure to get the 5.1.0.1 Windows clients from the FTP site, vs.
the 5.1.0.0 clients shipped on the CD. As someone pointed out yesterday,
we now have a 4.2.1.32 client to address APAR IC33211 (The TSM V4.2
Windows NT-based client acceptor service may crash if improperly formatted
data is received from the HTTP port), and this APAR is fixed in 5.1.0.1 as
well.

For ODBC driver users, be sure to get the 5.1.0.1 ODBC driver as well.

So, anyone backing up NW6 with remote, shared drives (I'm used to
calling them NSS volumes in 5.1)? I'm testing a NW6 cluster with the

will only back up the local volumes. The client has no knowledge of
these other volumes, which are EMC disk SCSI attached. It works in 5.1,
even in the cluster environment, which is not officially supported by
IBM. This is a test environment for now but the Intel/NW boys are

On a related note, anyone know of plans for a NW cluster aware client?

just recently adopted(?) and am trying to do a restore on. The problem
is that the data to restore is on an NSS volume and the restore just
will not work.

 Thanks.

is no DSM_DIR env. variable set.

Bypass: manually copy the newer DSCAMENG.txt file to the production

I didn't try it, but suppose that manually discarding the tsm_images

Hello,

First are you sure database backups are done regularly? on the schedule?
do q actlog begind=-1 s=database
That will tell you if you had a backup going back one day.

The best way to check is do q volhist type=dbb and look at the last line.
That's the last database backup.

Re: TSM V5.1 - new return codes

2002-04-12 Thread Rushforth, Tim

I think the addition of return codes is great but have a question on the
rc=4 with excluded files:

The doc specifies:
rc=4: The operation completed successfully, but some files were not
processed.
There were no other errors or warnings. This return code is very common.
Files are not processed for various reasons. The most common reasons are:
- The file is in an exclude list..
- The file was in use by another application and could not be accessed by
the
client
- The file changed during the operation to an extent prohibited by the copy
serialization attribute.

I have a directory with one subdirectory exluded via exclude and
exlude.archive.

For an incremental of the directory I get rc=0, for an archive or a
selective backup I get rc=4.

I would rather see a different return code for an excluded file (I'm
excluding it so I expect it to not get backed up!). I think a file that is
missed because it is open or changed is much more serious than a file that
is excluded.

Why are the return codes inconsistent between incrementals and selective or
archives?

Or was my testing incorrect?

Yes, you've discovered a new feature. If you are using PRESCHEDULECMD,
then presumably you have some operation that you wish to complete prior to
the scheduled TSM operation (i.e. shut down a database before incremental
backup runs). In 5.1, we changed PRESCHEDULECMD so that if the command
does end with return code 0, then the scheduled operation will not run.
This change was based on user requirements.

From the use rmanual, in the section on what's new in 5.1:

==
Reliable, consistent, and documented return codes
have been added to the command line client and the
scheduler. This facilitates automation of client
operations via user-written scripts. By using the
QUERY EVENT command with the FORMAT=DETAILED
option, administrators can now distinguish between
scheduled backups that completed successfully with
no skipped files and scheduled backups that
completed successfully with one or more skipped
files. Also if you use the processing option
preschedulecmd to run a command, and that command
returns a non-zero return code, the scheduled
event will not run. This ensures that scheduled
events will not run if prerequisite commands do
not complete successfully. See Return Codes from
the Command Line Interface,
Preschedulecmd/Prenschedulecmd, and
Postschedulecmd/Postnschedulecmd for more
information.
==

Alternatively, if the command does not need to complete prior to running
the scheduled operation, you can use PRENSCHEDULECMD, which runs
asynchronously, and whose return code is not tracked.

The times listed are HH:MM as you suspected. And why does it take so long?
Well, the dbbackup was a normal-while-everything-else-is-running backup,
maybe this is a partial excuse.

The restore, however, was the only thing running on the system. The restore
is essentially rebuilding the database, so its not just a matter of
streaming the bytes onto the disk. I watched the topas monitor from time to
time while this was going on and saw the db hdisk at 90-100% busy. (My guess
is that this process has not been souped up in a long time, if ever.)

H... not a good sign.

I downloaded the driver this morning and verified the install myself, and it
went alright.

If prompted, point to the .msi file in
the old driver's install image (the one you just unpacked).

3) If that works, then try installing the new driver.

Let me know how this goes.

Yes, and be sure to get the 5.1.0.1 Windows clients from the FTP site, vs.

The idea of turning a list of volumes into a script is a very good
idea. Here's a unix-ified way to do it for those who will, maybe
 faster:

 1. Obtain a list of volumes (or stgpools, or...) into a file, say,
 /tmp/vols 2. cat /tmp/vols | awk '{print checkout libv library_name
 $1 checkl=no rem=no}' /tmp/macro
   vol name is here ^^
 3. dsmadmc -id=... -pas=... -itemcommit macro /tmp/macro
itemcommit means if one line fails, don't roll back the
 whole script

Not trying to one-up you, Tab - people more comfortable with MS Word

  Geoffrey,

Whenever I have to do similar operations on lots of volumes, I
 use my word
processor's (MS Word in this case) mail merge feature to help. The
  sequence goes like this.

  1. Obtain a list of volumes to be processed. If the volume name is
the only thing that will change, you can save to a text file. But
 text files
only accommodate one variable. If more variables (fields) are
 needed, use
  the native WP doc format.

  2. Select the file from step 1 as the data source.

  3. Create the master document with the desired command line like:
  checkout libv library_name [volume] checkl=no remove=no

where volume is the merge field to be used for the final
  document.

  4. Merge the data. You will end up with a document that has a line
from step 3 for each volume.

  5. Because that document will be in the native WP format, do a Save
  As...text of the document.

  6. Reopen the text version of the document. You will have a script.

  7. Paste that text document's contents into the text entry window of
the Create Script page of the TSM web client. The final result will
be a server script consisting of the command from step 3 for each
  volume.

  8. Execute the server script in TSM.

I know this sounds a bit complicated, but once you've done it a time
or two, you can create in less that five minutes scripts that
  process thousands of volumes.

This technique was vital when I was doing our data reorg after
 the library
upgrades and I had to Move Data the contents of hundreds of tapes.

  Good luck.

3494 Partitioning Security Not!, But Maybe There is Hope

2002-04-12 Thread Seay, Paul

Those of us that are trying to share our 3494 libraries and some of us
having done so successfully have recognized that the mtlib command and the
lmcpd interface have no security to prevent improper accidental or malicious
actions. Once an open systems host has been defined to the library that
host can change the categories of the tapes, mount them in what ever drive
it wishes, use tapeutil to do whatever including read, write, erase the tape
if the host has access to a tape drive in the library.

As part of Share and a customer I have taken an interest in defining a
requirement for IBM to eliminate this issue. There are a number of
approaches that IBM could take, but the easiest, simplest, and most cost
effect from my point of view is to implement security in the library manager
to register ranges of tapes to hosts (multiple if you like). Register the
drives the host can manipulate. And, to implement a password token with
automated refresh and manual reset facilities that the host has to pass with
each lmcpd (mtlib) request. However, this would not change the way any
application (backup product) uses the library or the ability to say a system
has unlimited access (* for all tapes or drives).

This function would be selected by the customer as to whether to turn it on
or not. Once on, each host will have to have a temporary password set in
the LM and issue a new parameter (-P) on the mtlib command with the
temporary password to prime the password control information for a host into
the ibmatl.conf entry for that library for this host. At that point the
system will go into a password generate mode where it can change the
password in a two phased commit process every n days (customer
selectable).
Each lmcpd request will have the imbedded generated password token. There
are certainly other security encryption schemes that could be used to
protect against snooping, but that is the least of the problem right now and
would be only nice to have. At least now the host has to pass an
authorization to do something to the tapes.

The LM GUI interface would have some extensions to the host definition
screen to support defining what a host could manipulate. One area that
would be nice is to define volume or drive groups and just register the host
to the volume or drive groups that you wish it to be able to manipulate.
That way a change to the group to add a new drive would not require every
host to be updated, same for volumes.

This is how it would affect the open systems hosts. Commands from an
invalid host (reverse IP lookup) rejected outright with the same error that
an invalid library gets today. Requests that have invalid passwords would
have the same thing happen to them. Requests to manipulate a tape or drive
that a host does not have access to will be rejected. Inventory of drive
and library query functions will operate as today because backup products
issue requests for this stuff and could be affected if it were not left the
same. Inventory of tape volumes will mask out volumes not belonging to the
host (this is nice to have). The insert function will only notify the hosts
that have been registered to the volume range, meaning if no host will get
the information if none are registered. And, if a range is registered any
tapes in FF00 status will get notified to the newly registered host.

How do we want to change this for open systems? We need to ask for what is
a business critical need so IBM will do it.

How do we want the mainframe to play here? The mainframe does not use the
lmcpd interface, yet. Customers have asked for mtilib on the S/390 so that
they can do the inquiry functions or fix problems with open systems tapes.
I suggest that the same be true of the S/390 requests. However, right now,
I suggest it be simple, allow a S/390 definition to the library for all
S/390s and let them continue to manage their security external to the
library among themselves. At least this would prevent the S/390 from
messing with open systems tapes and drives. If the mtlib function is
created for S/390 down the road it will just work the same way as the
functionality for the open systems.

The potential benefits here are significant. Sharing tapes between
platforms without exposing things that you do not want could become a
reality. Sharing drives becomes much more secure because you can limit the
pools of drives a host can manipulate. Using a library to support multiple
internal customers/users now becomes a possiblity. And, the potential for
an integrity train wreck waiting to happen were some critical data gets
accidentally destroyed is eliminated.

If the function for insert is done the way suggested above you could just
load your library with a bunch of tapes and leave them in FF00 status.
Define a new range when a host needs some more tapes and those notifications
get sent to the host for it to do what it should (just an idea). The other
piece that I have always wanted is an insert

Hello fellow ##SMERS

Running TSM 3.7.3.8 Server on Solaris 2.7 Box (E250 450Mhz 1GB)

In the coming months, it looks very likely that we are going to be getting
some sort of SAN that will initially just be directly connected to one of
our machines (an over-priced array for a while then!), and in the future be
connected via a SAN switching device to act as a proper Storage Area
Network. Whilst I know that this is a broad subject, I am interested in
anyone's personal experiences with this.

What questions should I be asking myself in order to get the most out of a
SAN and what it can offer. For example, I hear the term Flash Copy quite
often. I assume that I could make image backups of an entire system very
quickly this way thus providing for some very fast restore times. This is
just one thing that I would be interested in understanding.

Thanks very much
