Re: what is the problem in the command?

2002-10-11 Thread Lars Bebensee

Hi Burak,

there's no problem with your command. For safety reasons TSM always wants
to read the softlabel on checkin. Only checkout libvol will work with
"checklabel=barcode".

Greetings

Lars

2002-10-11 Thread Sung Y Lee

Hello,

I know that on certain library such as 3494 you don't have an option for
barcode.
I am thinking that 3583 might be one..

Try checking in with checklabel=no

Issue help command on TSM admin session "help checkin libvolume" for more
information

TDP for Oracle backup problem

2002-10-11 Thread HEMPSTEAD, Tim

Hi.

We are running a rather back level collection of TSM software and are
hitting a problem with backing up one of our databases. We have an RS6000
S80 running several Oracle databases and a TSM Server, (note: it wasn't my
idea to put the TSM server on the same server as the databases and this is
getting rectified at the next upgrade). The smaller databases (up to ~200gb
in size each) backup without problems but the largest database (800gb)
fails.

The backup tends to fail doing a level 0 incremental (i.e. full) backup of
the database through RMAN via the TDP. There are no errors in the TSM
activity log, the dsierror.log or the dsmerror.log for that time period. In
the activity log it appears that sessions just stop coming in from the
Oracle backup and after a short pause start coming in for the next database
backup. There are no errors indicating either a communication timeout, i/o
error or a lack of mount points. The backup (last time) had been running
happily for 2 hours before it failed.

The TSM server also backs up a couple of large Domino servers and another
smaller Oracle server over a gigabit lan without problems.

The backup used to work perfectly until the DBAs upgraded Oracle on the
server from 8.1.6.2 to 8.1.7.0. They had a few problems with the upgrade
and ended up having to rebuild the RMAN database on that server. Has anyone
had this sort of problem or knows anything that can shed some light on it?

The error obtained is as follows:
RMAN-00571: ===
RMAN-00569: === ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===
RMAN-00571: ===
RMAN-03015: error occurred in stored script backup_db_level_0

RMAN-10031: ORA-19583 occurred during call to

The software in the environment is as follows:

TDP for Oracle 2.1.0.9

Re: what is the problem in the command?

2002-10-11 Thread Halvorsen Geirr Gulbrand

Hi again,
I really don't know why, but it is working as intended from Tivoli. If you
check "help checkin libvol"
it says:
volume_name
Specifies the volume name of the storage volume being checked in. This
parameter is required if SEARCH equals NO. Do not enter this parameter if
the
SEARCH parameter equals YES or BULK.

So, there's nothing wrong, other than that TSM is not designed that way.

Hello,

you can use a different managementclass and then the option copy
serialization dynamic in the backup copy group. Tivoli then backs up the

It means the client was not able to report the status of the backup. If
the backup is still running, you can see a ?. Or the backup was finished
and there was an error sending the status. This sometimes happens with
the 4.x client. Check the log file on the client for errors.

Re: Backing Up Open Files

2002-10-11 Thread Rushforth, Tim

Tivoli keeps on promising this in future releases for Windows.

In fact
http://www.tivoli.com/products/resources/storage-mgr/enhancements-5.1.5.html

indicates:

New Management Features:
Windows locked file access improves the availability of applications during
backup because there is no longer a need to take an application off-line to
backup files that are open/locked during the backup.

Although I don't see this mentioned as a new feature in the 5.1.5 client doc
though ...

upgrade from TSM 4.1.3 to TSM 5.1.5

2002-10-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I'll be upgrading soon from a TSM 4.1.3 server to TSM 5.1.5 server(if I can get the
CD's from somewhere or download it) on Windows 2k.

I've read the post of Johnn D. Tann where he states that it went fine. Here is a
copy/paste of his message:

>Here's the conceptual overview of what we did -- obviously, tailor it
>for your environment:
>1) stop TSM from doing anything (disable sessions, nomigrrecl, disablesched)
>2) delete SYSTEM OBJECT (helps speed up cleanup backupgroups later on)

>4) stop TSM Server
>5) copy dsmserv.opt, dsmserv.dsk, volhist, devconfig to a safe place
>6) install new version from CD
>7) patch to 5.1.1.6 (Tivoli website)
>8) reboot
>9) start TSM (again w/ disable sessions, nomigrrecl, disablesched)
>10) cleanup backupgroups
>13) restart TSM (sessions enabled, uncomment nomigrrecl/disablesched)""

I'm getting confused about the cleanup backupgroups thing as there seem to be some
problems with it. Why do you need to do a 'delete system object' prior to the upgrade
and what is the command for it?

Johnn says it will speed up the cleanup backupgroup later on the TSM 5.1.5 server.
What does this command do (don't find anything in the reference quide)?
Are the issues that there were with 'cleanup backupgroup' (it was running as a
foreground process and took forever) fixed in 5.1.5?

Any other issues I might expect?

Thanks,
Kurt

if so, run
dsmserv format 1 1
the log file and db file should be ones you FIRST format with the operating

dsmfmt -m -db
where is the number of MB the file should be
and
dsmfmt -m -log
the dsmfmt command should reside in your install directory.

Yes, but DiskXtender 2000 is an HSM *server* that will feed to TSM; it is
not an HSM client under TSM's control. I also have a hard time telling
customers that they should buy TSM instead of Legato's backup product, and
then turn around and recommend another Legato storage product.

I find DX's configuration to be overly complex and confusing, and it is
possible to get into a corner where you *can't* uninstall everything off
it.[1]

Re: Backing Up Open Files

2002-10-11 Thread Bill Boyer

No, it tells TSM what to do with a file that CHANGES during the backup. From
the help:

SERialization
Specifies how TSM handles files or directories when they are modified
 during backup processing.

If a file is OPEN, then it depends on HOW the application opened itfor
share or exclusive use. If it's opened SHARE access then TSM will back it up
and if it is modified then the SERIALIZATION takes effect. If the file isn't
modified while TSM backs it up, then you got a copy, but no guarantee what
shape it's in. Microsoft even says that you can't back up an MDB file if
it's open. Even though you can physically do it.

If the application opens the file for EXCLUSIVE use, then TSM won't touch
it. Then you need an product like Open File Manager.

The 'COPY SERIALIZATION' parameter in the 'BACKUP COPY GROUP' of the
'MANAGEMENT CLASS' in the 'POLICY SET' of the DOMAIN specifies what to do
with an 'IN USE' file. Your choices are:

STATIC - Try once and backup only if not in use.
SHRSTATIC - Try as many as CHANGINGRETRIES parameter. Backup if not in use.
DYNAMIC - Backup the file on the first attempt, in use or not.
SHRDYNAMIC - Try as many as CHANGINRETRIES parameter. Try to backup file
when not in use, but backup anyway on the last attempt.

In this case, you want one of DYNAMIC of SHRDYNAMIC specified in your
policy.

OK, if you create a new policy domain or policy set or change the
management
class name, our experience is everything gets rebound and the retentions
changed on previous backups.

If you just change the retention in the existing policy domain/policy set
and management class without changing their names then the existing
backups
are not affected and the new backups get the new retentions.

I could be all wrong about this. So, lets see what others say. The
reason
is if a file gets deleted the new deleted file policy would go into effect
not the old. There may be other considerations I have not thought of and
may experience may be just a fluke.

How do I set this up so the backups I already have maintain their 6 month

I guess I need to set up a new domain, but does it matter what names I

Re: TSM 5.1.5

2002-10-11 Thread Kauffman, Tom

Under the last publishe set of naming conventions I've seen from IBM, this
should be a no-charge upgrade regardless of your current support level.
Therefore, it should be downloadable, even though it's a base version. If
they didn't want to imply that, it should have been 5.2.0 and not 5.1.5.

4.2.1.0 was a downloadable base, at least when I installed it it was. It DID
require that I have 4.2.0 installed, and 5.1.5 should be (or should have
been) set up the same way.

Roger,

That is a concern, but here's how I look at it. If your script is only
readable by you and root (and I'm typicaly root), then I'd say you're no
more insecure than otherwise. All root has to do to get access to your
server or even your ID is to start the server in the foreground and update
your password. I hope that helps.

The big advantage of ITSM Server Scripts over OS Shell Scripts (whether
Unix shell, CMS EXEC, or whatever) is passwords. With a Server Script,
you are not execuring dsmadmc for each command - it is done form within
an administrator session. Authentication has already been performed, so
admin ids and passwords are simply not involved. However, for an OS
script that issues the dsmadmc command for each ITSM command, you've got
to put an all-powerful ITSM admin id and password on the command line,
in clear text.

This is a big security hazard. Has anyone figured out a way around this?

SQL - Copy client options with SQL?

2002-10-11 Thread Coats, Jack

Yes, I know it can be done, but I am not enough of a SQLer to do it.
But by example I am getting better :)

I want to make a copy of a complete set of client options, to a new name.
(I have a Windows set of options, now I want a Win2K set, to tweak them
a little differently).

0) First a relatively simple one, what SQL QUERY could I issue to list all
the options
and related fileds of each option, within a set for a particular "Client
Options" set?

1) How can I copy this (other than the obvious, re-manual entry :(
within SQL just to make a duplicate of the current client options?
(Some kind of select, on the client options, selecting each option,
then inserting each option and its fields under a new client option)

2) Could I send it all to a file I could edit, then use the edited file as
input
to build the new set of Client Options?

TIA ... Jack

Re: Backing Up Open Files

2002-10-11 Thread Andrew Raibeck

The serialization parameter isn't so much for "in use" files as it is for
files that change while they are being backed up. For example, if a file
is open ("in use") by the Windows notepad.exe program, TSM can back it up
regardless of the serialization setting, as long as you don't save the
file while TSM is backing it up. If you actually save the file while TSM
is backing it up, then TSM will detect this, and either retry the backup
or skip the file, depending on the serialization setting.

Always use CAUTION with DYNAMIC or SHRDYNAMIC serialization, since this
means that the backup copy may be inconsistent ("fuzzy"). It is
recommended that DYNAMIC or SHRDYNAMIC serialization be used ONLY for
those files where a restore of a fuzzy copy would be usable. Check with
the vendor of the application that uses the file to see whether a fuzzy
copy would be usable.

A different (but related) subject is "locked" files. A file is considered
to be "locked" when an application opens the file for exclusive use, such
that no other application (including TSM) can open the file. Note that
locked files are NOT equivalent to open files; rather, they are a subset
of open files. Open files can be broken out like this:

   Open ("in use")
 Shareable (nonexclusive)
   Shareable for read
   Shareable for write
   Shareable for read and write
 Non-shareable (exclusive or "locked")

Notepad.exe opens files such that they are shareable, which is why it is
possible for TSM to back up these files.

When this subject comes up, it is usually with regard to how TSM handles
(or, more correctly, can't handle) non-shareable files. In this case,
regardless of the TSM copy serialization setting, TSM can not open these
files, and thus it can not back them up; at least not without the help of
an open file manager, such as St. Bernard Software's "Open File Manager"
product.

Backup if not in
use.
DYNAMIC - Backup the file on the first attempt, in use or not.
SHRDYNAMIC - Try as many as CHANGINRETRIES parameter. Try to backup file
when not in use, but backup anyway on the last attempt.

In this case, you want one of DYNAMIC of SHRDYNAMIC specified in your
policy.

problems in defining a shared library clients drives

2002-10-11 Thread Matthew Glanville

I am having some problems in defining a shared library clients drives.

Here is what I have:
Two servers running TSM 5.1.1.2 on Solaris 8, with a IBM 3584 library
-w- 8 drives.
Both servers see all the drives and control ports (/dev/rmt/*mt and
*smc), I can define non shared libraries and drives to each server
individually, so there is nothing wrong with the SAN or zoning.

I believe I have followed all the correct steps to properly define the
library to the library manager server.

On library manager:

tsm: ADSMA> q library SANLIB f=d
  Library Name: SANLIB
  Library Type: SCSI
ACS Id:
  Private Category:
  Scratch Category:
  External Manager:
Shared: Yes
   LanFree:
ObeyMountRetention:
   Primary Library Manager:
   WWN:
 Serial Number:
Last Update by (administrator): ME
 Last Update Date/Time: 10/10/02 16:08:48

tsm: ADSMA> q drive f=d
(reports all 8 drives)

On library client: q library SANLIB f=d

  Library Name: SANLIB
  Library Type: SHARED
ACS Id:
  Private Category:
  Scratch Category:
  External Manager:
Shared: No
   LanFree:
ObeyMountRetention:
   Primary Library Manager: ADSMA
   WWN:
 Serial Number:
Last Update by (administrator): ME
 Last Update Date/Time: 10/10/02 17:12:10

tsm: ADSMB> q drive f=d
(reports no drives after defining the SANLIB to the library
client)

The manual says that you have to define the drives to the library client,
and then define the paths.
BUT:

tsm: ADSMB> define drive SANLIB DRIVE1
ANR8403E DEFINE DRIVE: Operation not allowed for SHARED libraries.
ANS8001I Return code 3.

I talked to LVL 1 support, and they pointed to somthing that said the
documentation was wrong and that those drives will be automatically
defined when the shared library client initializes (it initializes with no
errors reported on the library manger or library client) But the drives
are not being automatically defined. A network snoop between the two
servers upon initializing shows text passing from the library manager to
client containg the drive names, so something is happening, but not
completely working.

I am still waiting for LVL 2 to respond.

Does anyone have any ideas?

TSM Web access

2002-10-11 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

The past month I have had this happen twice and am wondering if anyone else
has seen this. When trying to access the TSM Server via the Web interface I
get the basic "The Page cannot be displayed" message. As if I was off the
network. I'm obviously not and can get anywhere else. The dsmadmc gets me in
fine and the server is up doing its thing. I've had to stop and restart the
server, the only way so far I've been able to clear this.

Anyone else seen this?

2) backup DB from 4.1.4

I updated the atape and atldd drivers and after that I have a new device,

What I typically do in this situation is to delete ALL the tape drives

Then I run cfgmr to pick up the new devices. I have never run into the
situation where there was a drive disappearing such as this after a

I'm not too sure about the whole cleanup backupgroups myself. I
understand that Tivoli has re-done the way the database handles
Windows SYSTEM OBJECTS. So if you don't delete them, then the CLEANUP
BACKUPGROUPS, as I understand, cleans that up for you. By deleting
the SYSTEM OBJECTS prior to upgrade, there would then be nothing to
"CLEANUP", at the risk, of course, that you can't do a bare metal
restore of your Win2K servers until after successful backups occur.

That is how I understood it. But I agree, there is confusing and
not-clear info out there.

As for deleting system objects, someone said you could do a
del fi * "SYSTEM OBJECT"
but this didn't work for us, saying no such node as "*". (Though
doing that with "query" worked fine.)

So, we redirected the output of
q fi * "SYSTEM OBJECT"
to a file, then converted that file into a script, then fed that
script into dsmadmc at the command line, and that started all of our
deletion processes successfully.

No longer have that script, but with some vi/grep/awk-ing, you should
be able to figure it out.

Re: upgrade db & ANR9999D error

2002-10-11 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT

Mario,

this is your SIXTH post on ADSM-L list with same problem after twelve
replies. Before to submit the same question for seventh time read
carefully TSM Quick Start Manual and especially Chapter 2, Installing
Tivoli Storage Manager, Migrating to Tivoli Storage Manager Version 4.2
!!!
Please understand the facts:
- to upgrade TSM server preserving DB contents you need to uninstall old
version, install new version in the same directory (and usually no need
for "dsmserv upgrade db").
- to move TSM DB from one server to another both *SHOULD* be the same
platform+version/release/maintenance, period !
Restore of v4.1.x DB over v4.2.y server would *NOT* work, restore of
v4.2.x DB over v4.1.y server would *NOT* work, restore of Solaris DB on
Windows box will *not* work, etc. All those are design limitations and are
clearly described in all TSM manuals.

I do not know who is that "someone from Tivoli" person and can he/she overcome those
limitations. I am afraid no one on
this list can.

Subject:upgrade db & ANRD error

Hi list,

What is happening is this:

1- I had successfully backed up the TSM 4.1.3 database to a mapped drive
(devtype=file) at a machine with TSM Server 4.2.0
2- The restore db worked fine but when I tried to use the "dsmserv upgrade
db" command I received the following error:

ANRD tb.c(784): ThreadId<0> Column count mismatch for table
Administrative-
.Attributes - expected 24, found 23
ANRD adminit.c(639): ThreadId<0> Error 18 opening table
Administrative.Att-
ributes.

The above error also occurs when you simply type dsmserv at the DOS
command
prompt and press .

I have been told that to upgrade the TSM version I should set up a new
machine with the TSM 4.1.3 server, perform the above procedures of
backup/restore db and then install the new TSM 4.2.X or 5.1.X over it.

On the other hand, someone from Tivoli told me that the dsmserv upgrade db
command works just fine and that what I did would work.

Any help is apreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Rebinding files

If you change the management class in include list but the file is already
deleted it would not rebind.
But if you change copygroup settings *without* renaming the class, those
settings will apply for *all* objects bound to that class - past and
future, active and inactive.
Thus the only answer to the initial question is (as Andy already pointed)
creation of new node name. After old retension interval have passed the
old node name filesets can be deleted.

Re: TSM Database Disk Layout Recommendations

2002-10-11 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT

Paul,

may I object on only one point - IBM ESS is designed to use RAID-5 in
ranks but its huge memory cache hides RAID-5 specifics and mitigates
nearly all drawbacks. So we should not compare ESS to simple RAID-5
implementations, this would be apples vs. oranges. ESS' big cache is
better than any disks, even JBOD or RAID-0.
And even ESS can have poor performance if improperly configured. For
example if we put many LUNs on same rank and later use those LUNs for
DBVols - expected parallelism will be bottlenecked deeply in ESS
internals. In such case Storwatch Expert can help a lot.

Subject:Re: TSM Database Disk Layout Recommendations

The reason why is because everyone is saying RAID-5 is bad versus a
particular implementation or whatever. The Enterprise Storage Server
(SHARK) is RAID-5 SSA under the covers. It flies because it has
controllers
on the front end that essentially eliminate the RAID-5 effect and can
actually blow away RAID-1 solutions under high sequential write
applications. The HDS 9900 series is the same.

It is all a balance. RAID-5 works great for some things, bad for others.
If your RAID-5 solution does any kind of parity calculation in the array
it
will perform well on sequential write. Why? Because the generally change
from RAID-5 to RAID-3 which is the fastest on write.

Now, considering this. What does high sequential write?

Generally, Storage Pools and the LOG.

What does high sequential read?

Storage Pools and the DB during backup.

So, to generally say RAID-5 is bad is totally incorrect. It depends on
your
hardware. The number of simultaneous write operations you can perform,
the
speed of your disk, etc.

In the case of TSM it even depends on how your environment is setup. Would
I use software RAID-5, heck no, the CPU overhead is astronomical and the
read back penalty on something like Windows is will just kill you because
it
is a dumb RAID-5 implementation.

I hope everyone will look at what they are saying and give specific
complete
configuration information in the future.

We use the ESS. We do striping in the AIX file system, not RAID-5.
Protection is performed in the ESS. We had some serious performance
problems in relation to other ESS applications because we did not
implement
our striping correctly and our AIX system needed some serious tuning.

If you are running default AIX vmtune parameters. You are probably
experiencing bad performance, not because of the RAID-5 implementation,
but
because of the stress RAID-5 puts on the filesystem buffers in the
non-comp
space and causing astronomical paging on your system. You change to raw
and
magically the problem goes away. Why, becauase the file system usage
drops
dramatically and the paging stops.

By changing to the recommendations folks kindly suggested over the past
weeks. My database backup time went from about 3 hours down to 1 hour for
an 85GB database. My storage pools have dramatically improved as well and
I
have not corrected their striping yet. How did I get the performance:

maxperm set to 40
  minperm set to 10
max page read ahead set to 256K
bufferpool set to 256MB (memory on the machine is 2GB)
sufficient free pages to support the max read ahead (there are
rules
about this number)

Our machine is a P660-6H1,
(4) 450MZ processors,
2GB memory,
2 Fibre Channel cards for the disk, 4 for the tape (1 Gbit)
640GB of ESS disk
14 Magstar Drives in use so far, eventually 32.
2 Gbit Ethernet Cards.

Yes, my environment may be unique, but at least I am telling you why what
I
have works well so that a generalization is not made that has no point of
reference.

Thanks Mark, you probably saved us about 55K to prevent us from buying a
much larger TSM server. We will probably change to (6) 750mz processors
and
4GB of memory, add another Gbit card, and 2 more FC Cards to a new IO
frame
for the 6H1. Your methodical approach was exactly what we needed to
understand the issues and what to do. Our machine purrs like a kitten
now.

Tivoli Website seems to indicate that Oracle 9i is not yet supported
for TDP Oracle on W2K clients. Anybody have any info on this?

Is it where it will "probably work" but is not officially supported
yet?

We just went from TSM Server 4.1.3 to 5.1.1.6
You do not need to stop at 4.2 along the way.

Here's the conceptual overview of what we did -- obviously, tailor it
for your environment:

1) stop TSM from doing anything (disable sessions, nomigrrecl,
disablesched)
2) delete SYSTEM OBJECT (helps speed up cleanup backupgroups later on)
3) full db backup
4) stop TSM Server
5) copy dsmserv.opt, dsmserv.dsk, volhist, devconfig to a safe place
6) install new version from CD
7) patch to 5.1.1.6 (Tivoli website)
8) reboot
9) start TSM (again w/ disable sessions, nomigrrecl, disablesched)
10) cleanup backupgroups
13) restart TSM (sessions enabled, uncomment nomigrrecl/disablesched)

* "nomigrrecl" & "disablesched yes" should be put in the dsmserv.opt

johnn
p.s. We actually did one further step and deleted library and drive
devices in both TSM as well as on AIX level. When redefining on TSM
level, there is a new "define path" command that has to be done after
each "define library" and "define drive" (which both change slightly
in syntax too).

TSM 5.1.5

2002-10-11 Thread Riaan Louwrens
TSM'ers

Not sure if people are aware of this but TSM for Windows 5.1.5 is out. This
is a major release (no patches and fixes to load, jippie) as far as I know
this supersedes 5.1.1.6

I Dont know which platforms are supported .. Only just started playing with
it on Win2K.

Seeing as there are quite a few people that seem to be upgrading ...

Just thought I would add my 2 cents worth ...

Re: Antwort: Backing Up Open Files

2002-10-11 Thread Bill Boyer
You can, but that doesn't guarantee you a "good" copy of the file, but a
"fuzzy" copy. It also doesn't get you any files that are exclusively opened
by an application. You'll need Open File Manager from St. Bernard Software
for this. When OFM recognizes a backup function starting on a disk, it
syncronizes the disk with a cache so that any new writes go to the file, but
the original data (time-zero) is placed in the cache. So when the backup
program reads the file, any changed data is ignored and OFM hands the backup
program the original data from the cache.

We have a client that is using OFM on lots of SQLServer boxes to backup the
active databases without having to bring SQL down. Not an ideal backup
solution, but OFM is working just fine. Make sure that you use the latest
OFM release and check for compatibility issues with your virus software.
Just a couple things we ran into.

Hello,

you can use a different managementclass and then the option copy
serialization dynamic in the backup copy group. Tivoli then backs up the
file at the first attempt if it is open or not!

Re: Please help me regarding my query

2002-10-11 Thread Bill Boyer
Also a status of "?" is not an exception!! If you do a Q EV * * T=CL EX=YES
you will not see these events. I was reading some APARs about this and
Tivoli was supposed to be comming up with status's instead of just a generic
"?" for these conditions.

We ended up writing a Perl script to process the Q EV output and changing
the "?" to "Incomplete".

It means the client was not able to report the status of the backup. If
the backup is still running, you can see a ?. Or the backup was finished
and there was an error sending the status. This sometimes happens with
the 4.x client. Check the log file on the client for errors.

Hi Zoltan,

The file name in the ANE4987E message is not written as a single string,
so it isn't as if TSM is inserting the extra blank into the fully-formed
path. Rather, it is written as three components that are concatenated
together:

- the file space name (\\acadnt3\d$)
- the high-level name (\MSSQL7\Data)
- the low-level name (\BIS_Data.MDF)

It looks to me like there is a minor bug in the message skeleton that
causes the blank space to appear between the high-level and low-level
names. While it may be annoying, it is not otherwise impact the operation.

I am trying to build CLOPTSETs for various, similar boxes. For instance,
NT/W2K boxes that have MS-SQL on them. Unfortunately, I have found at
least 4-different permutation on the directory names used.

I have noticed that in the error messages when attempting to backup the
SQL files as regular files, not using the TDP/TDS, I see these errors:

ANE4987E Error processing '\\acadnt3\d$\MSSQL7\Data \BIS_Data.MDF': the
object is in use by another process

My question, what gives with the extra blank/space after the "\Data" part
of the directory name ?

In this case, you want one of DYNAMIC of SHRDYNAMIC specified in your
policy.

Try to get on 4.2.2.12 server if you can. With 4.2.1, the journal based

Subject: file inspection times

I am running Win2k client 4.2.1.32 and Win2k server 4.1.6. The client is
a
dual 700 Mhz and the server is a dual 1.0 GigHz machine. I have over 2.2
million files on our data server and thus it spends most of its time
inspecting files that have not changed. I cannot seem to get it to
inspect
any more than 100 files/sec. This means that my backup takes 6 hours even
if nothing changes. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can make
file
inspections quicker?

Thanks

What now?!?

I downloaded the new 4.2.3 client for WIn2K.

I click on IP22569.exe and the files get extracted

Then I select ENGLISH

Then the Install Shield Wizard pops up, gets to "preparing to install"
.. and disappears.

Nothing.
Nada.

Anybody seen this before?
Does the install process leave a log somewhere?

Re: Win2K 4.2.3 client - install problem

2002-10-11 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Hi Wanda,

Are you running it via a terminal server session? If so, try running the
setup.exe program via "Add/Remove Programs...". Also, if you are accessing
the install image from a network share, try putting the install image on a
local drive.

If none of that makes a difference, then please open a problem record with
IBM support and send them a setup.log file of the problem.

To create the setup.log file, open an OS prompt, change into the directory
where setup.exe is located, and run it as follows:

   setup /v"/l*v c:\setup.log"

After the install fails, you should have a setup.log file.

what the process should be. Should I:

1) backup DB from 4.1.4
restore DB on new box at 5.1.1.6
2) backup DB from 4.1.4

Officially it is supported on AIX 4.3.3 for "Oracle 9i 9.0.1 or later".
And because there is specific note that for AIX 5.1 a PTF will be
available by October 31 this should say on AIX 4.3.3 it is supported right
now. Look the announcement for ITSM 5.1.5 from 8-th October.

Hallo,

According to the doc, no oracle binary relink is needed and we have just

/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/libobk.a could not be loaded. Check
that it is installed
properly, and that LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable
(or its equivalent on your platform) includes the directory
where this file can be found. Here is some additional

Hi, does TSM exclude specific directories on AIX Unix servers, it seems as
though /tmp and /usr/spool are not backed up!

Does anyone have a specific list? I know about /proc etc..

TIA ... Jack

I did all that after I sent the email. The one fibre card did not come back.
I thought this odd because it was working fine just before the upgrade.
After the reboot it went to "defined" and once deleted would not come back.
Placed a call to support for IBM to replace it unless they know something I
don't. Or you guys don't. So for now I'm out one drive.

I had a similar thing happen a couple of years ago except that time I had
just decided it was time to re-boot the computer just because it was up for
so long. All the TCP/IP settings disappeared, it was as if I had just
installed the cards and brought the computer back up. Really weird if you
ask me.

Hi all,

I've got to work out some specifications for some new servers and I'm
looking for a bit of advice for what works with what.

OS: Either AIX 5.1 (latest ML) 64bit or HP-UX 11i 64bit (*)
Database: Oracle 9.2 64bit
Backup: TSM for Databases (Oracle) and File level client (latest levels).

(*) I've got to spec for both AIX or HP-UX and then the project will
decide
which one they want.

My question to the list is: Is the above TSM software compatible with
Oracle
9.2 under the above operating systems? (the Tivoli website implies that
Oracle 9 is only ok under AIX 5.1 32bit which disagrees with what my DBA's
are telling me).

Thanks in advance

Tim

Hi,

Does anyone know the status for TSM support for Netware cluster volumes?
As far as I know, TSM is not yet "Netware cluster aware". Netware's own
backup SBCON and BackupExec are the only systems that are "Netware cluster
