Re: Server AIX vs NT
Have you though about upgrading to 5.1.5 and running Linux? Also, I've been investigating and have found newer Intel based servers are coming with a lot more I/O capabilities. Unfortunately the vendors don't seem to publish I/O benchmarks for their machines. Re: SQL 2.2.1
Mehdi, This sounds more like the backups are not running at all when called from the server scheduler. I would look into that more closely, i.e. examine the TDP for SQL log for that time period to find out if it is even being executed. As far as TDP for SQL is concerned, it makes no difference how it is called... if the backups complete, then it will update the filespace information unless there is a communications problem. If you can't solve it, please call support. Thanks, Del Del Hoobler IBM Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Never cut what can be untied. - Commit yourself to constant improvement. = What I have found since my previous email is this. If I run my SQLFULL.CMD from the ClientThe information is updated...But if the server schedule calls up the command this information is not updated.

I have seen a problem if you were not specifying a NODENAME in the DSM.OPT file and the value assigned to the %COMPUTERNAME% env variable was lower-case. How it gets assigned as lower-case, I'll never know, but the encrytpion algorithm TSM uses to store the password in the registry looks like it didn't UPPER(NODENAME) first in some cases. So the scheduler would work until you ran the line command which would ask you to re-entry the password. Then the scheduler wouldn't work anymore. Also affected the CAD service. Bill Boyer DSS, Inc.
DIFFFULL Backups with TSM for SQL
Hi, Have installed TSM for MS SQL (vand i am now testing backup/recovery. I have a test SQL server i can play with and this has 10 databases, i exclude 9 and only backup 1 at the moment, for testing. In the DSM.OPT, i have INCLUDE \...\database-name\...\* to backup just one of the ten databases EXCLUDE \...\* so that i can exclude the other nine databases I understood from the docs that if I backup a SQL database using FULL, then a DIFFFULL backup (which i ran 5 minutes later) would only backup changes since the last full backup. Having ran a FULL backup, it dumped approx. 270mb of data from a single database. When i ran the DIFFFULL backup, it dumped 57mb. The problem here is that this is a test NT server, and no-one is accessing (therefore updating) data, so why did the DIFFFULL dump 57mb when nothing has changed? I read about a DIFFFULL % in the .cfg file, and that it defaulted to 20%. I changed this to 10% but it made no difference. My client server is NT, with SQL v7.0, TSM SQL client level 2.2.1 Anyone any ideas? Restore from one server to another using TDP 2.2.1
Can someone describe the exact procedure to restore a database backup from one server to another. This used to be quite straight forward with TDP 1.1.2 but does not work according to the directions with both the GUI and the command line. With the GUI, setting the 'from server' parameter in the configurations settings would imply that the GUI will query the TSM server for the backups from that server, it seems to have no affect whatsoever. With the command line again setting the FromSQLServer parm does nothing but return an error that no backups can be found for the server name 'SQL Servername'\meta\. Also it would seem to me that you would have to authenticate to TSM for both nodes, it's no apparent where you would provide the password for the from server. Re: DIFFFULL Backups with TSM for SQL
Jeff, This is probably a good question to post the the Microsoft SQL Server forums. TDP for SQL simply takes a blob of data that the SQL Server hands it and stores it on the TSM Server. TDP for SQL does not make the determination of what data should be backed up and what shouldn't. SQL Server decides all of this. TDP for SQL tells SQL Server that it wants to perform a differential backup, then waits for the SQL Server to hand the data back. The DIFFESTIMATE option allows you to estimate this since SQL does not give you a way to determine this without actually scanning all database pages. That estimate is only used to initially reserve space on the TSM Server... it is not used as the actual amount of data to be backed up. Thanks, Del Del Hoobler IBM Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Never cut what can be untied. - Commit yourself to constant improvement. = Have installed TSM for MS SQL (vand i am now testing backup/recovery.

Re: NetWare 6 Cluster and Web Client
Hi Jim, Yes we have generated a password file. We've not experienced the problem you have with SP2. Novell released an update for NSS yesterday (NW6NSS2B.EXE), but I've not had a chance to apply it yet. We previously had the post SP2 NSS beta batches installed, so maybe that prevented us having the problem. (TSM was installed only a month ago). The only other problem we're experiencing is similar to one that someone else posted with NW 5.1. When carrying out a restore to an empty directory, (via DSMC command line) it seems to attempt restoring some files twice. For example: *** File 'APPS:/restore/PS2000/WINWORD/ABSENCE.DOC' is write protected Select an appropriate action 1. Force an overwrite for this object 2. Force an overwrite on all objects that are write protected 3. Skip this object 4. Skip all objects that are write protected A. Abort this operation Action [1,2,3,4,A] : 1 (TSA600.NLM 6.0 266) This data set is in use and cannot be accessed at this time *** When I look in the restore location (at the time that the problem occours) the file is there. If I try to change it's attributes or delete it I get a message saying that the file is in use by other process. I think this may be problem with TSA600. I've reported this problem back to the people who installed TSM. Devices and Elements
I have an HP SureStore E Tape Library 20/700 that has six DLT drives connected via fiber to a W2K system. Three drives and the controller are connected to one fiber connection and the other three drives are connected to another fiber channel. The set of drives with the controller works, but the other set does not. Windows and TSM see all six of the drives. My question is: How do you match device that is listed in Windows to the proper element number? This is how I have it defined now. DRIVE_1 Device MT10.0.6.5 Element 500 Fails DRIVE_2 Device MT1.0.6.5Element 501 Fails DRIVE_3 Device MT19.0.6.5 Element 502 Fails DRIVE_4 Device MT4.0.6.4Element 503 Works DRIVE_5 Device MT13.0.6.4 Element 504 Works DRIVE_6 Device MT22.0.6.4 Element 505 Works TSM seems to be able to place a tape in the problem drives, but then gets an ANR8779E error and takes the drive offline. I have the windows device driver turned off for all six drives. I used lbtest.exe to see the element numbers, but that did not seem to tell me the device name associated with the element. If the Devices and Elements are assigned properly, then what else do I look for? I am also curious about the best way to test if a drive is working properly. TSM does use DES 56-bit encryption and it is currently not possible to change the method/strength. If you have additional requirements above and beyond DES 56-bit encryption, please open a requirement with Tivoli through your marketing rep. If you open a requirement can you please make sure to specify the following points: 1. encryption is for data encryption, authentication, secure communication, all of the above, etc. 2. if higher key strength is need, what is needed 3. if different algorithm is needed, e.g., AES, or if ability to plug-in different algorithm is needed 4. if user key management is needed This would help us understand what we need to do with our product set. I have the windows device driver turned off for all six drives. I used lbtest.exe to see the element numbers, but that did not seem to tell me the device name associated with the element. If the Devices and Elements are assigned properly, then what else do I look for? I am also curious about the best way to test if a drive is working properly. I don't remember if this was even possible using 'dsmc sched'. Example: At midnight a schedule is kicked off to incremental backup filesystem 'a'. This filesystem has many large files which change daily, and the incremental runs for several hours. It is also desired at around 1AM to kick off a schedule to incremental backup filesystem 'b'. The windows for doing these backups are application dependent. Currently the sched for FS 'b' is missed due to FS 'a' not having completed. TIA, Al

Re: dsmcad scheduler and multiple tasks
Is there any way, or is it possible, to get more than one scheduled event to occur on a client during the same time (or overlapping times) in which the scheduler is controlled via dsmcad? I don't remember if this was even possible using 'dsmc sched'. The 'dsmc sched' mechanism behaved just like dsmcad with regard to overlapping scheduled events. Example: At midnight a schedule is kicked off to incremental backup filesystem 'a'. This filesystem has many large files which change daily, and the incremental runs for several hours. It is also desired at around 1AM to kick off a schedule to incremental backup filesystem 'b'. I know of two ways to do this with 'dsmc sched'. One can use the central scheduler to run a script that spawns child process to run two 'dsmc inc' commands at appropriate times. I am reasonably sure this approach will also work with dsmcad. Alternatively, one can register two node names for the system, run a copy of the client scheduler process for each node name, and set up a separate schedule for each node. This approach entails creating two server stanzas in dsm.sys with an explicit nodename option in at least one of the stanzas. It also entails using the -servername option when starting at least one of client scheduler processes. I don't know whether this second approach can be modified to work with dsmcad.

Re: Server AIX vs NT
Many times discussed on the list and always the discussion is lengthy and dispersed in opinions. I personally recommend UNIX-systems thus if you are not interested in my arguments please do not read the rest. And in your case p630 (four generations after h50 in the same class) ought to be the best fit. With newly anounced I/O drawer this one became a mighty beast. As was already pointed the main argument ought to be the current skill investment - usually change of the box and operating system means another OS-admin working with the TSM admin. This incurs needs for some TSM training of that OS admin and improvement of the TSM admin skills in the new OS (if any). Next important argument is necessary time for migration - move to a more powerful same-platform box is just a matter of TSM DB restore (we do not talk about version upgrade). Move to a different platform requires either export/import (time consuming) or simultaneous work with both servers until data expires (harder to maintain). For larger installations both approaches can consume several months. Except smallest installations prices for hardware are similar: Althought (I)TSM is nearly equal on all platforms it relies on the box, peripherals, operating system and drivers. Bean counters usually compare processor clocks but this is least significant factor for a TSM server performance. Size of TSM DB also is not a very good factor because it shows mainly ammount of *all* data stored, not the daily change and throughput requirements. Actually PCs can handle up to more than a terabyte per night (3-4 LTO drives * 6-8 hours ~= 1.5 TB). - HP, IBM and Sun servers being mid-range systems are optimized for large data crunching. They have more PCI buses therefore more I/O througput. Number of buses for entry RISC systems is comparable to average Intel-based box, average RISC systems can be compared only to high-end 8-16 processor Intels, while RISC systems with 8 or more processors do not have equivalents in PC world. - TSM server is important component of the IT infrastructure and very often cannot be stopped at all. (IMO) Windows requires much more restarts than any UNIX and is less stable. - Intel-box peripherals involve more the processor in all I/O operations. - RISC processors still perform more operations in a single clock cycle. Intel processors focus on high clock-rate but small cache incurs more time wasted idling until data comes from memory. RISC processors have much larger caches and their memory bus width is 2-4 times more. My rule of thumb is that 1 MHz of RISC processor clock is equal to about 1.5-2 MHz of Intel (where 1.5x multiplier was for big cache Xeon processors) - in all kinds of Windows, TCP/IP stack is much more resource consuming and with less total throughput. - list prices compared to actual deal prices - in the PC market competition is very hard and margins are much lower; RISC systems have much higher list prices but very often are sold with big discounts. Usually bidget comparisons are made based on list prices which is somewhat inaccurate. As a result if we are talking about installations with little daily changes (satisfiable by 2-3 HBAs and 1-2 LAN adapters) - nearly any box can satisfy the requirements. So even entry (1-2 proc) Wintel box fits the requirements and beats all others in price. Price range: 15k (EUR or USD). For average throughput requirements (four and more drives, usually several 100s GB diskpool, 3-4+ FC or many SCSI adapters) number of buses and slots becomes main factor. Here compete RISC systems with 2-4 processors and high-end 4-8 processor Intel-based systems. Price range: 30-100k If number of drives in library(es) is more than 10 LTO/Magstar/9x40 or 15-16 DLT then even the mightiest Intels have to surrender and this is the place for mid- to high-end RISCs and mainframes. Price range: 150k and beyond. What kind of Cisco is this? I am unaware of any Cisco non-networking device (if we assume iSCSI as half-networking) and networking ones should not mess with your TCP (OSI level 4; they ought to deal with IP - OSI level 3). Re: Lotus Notes Restore problem : ANS0932I No matching data on server
--- The server does not have enough database space to continue the current operation This ultimately means your TSM server is out of DB space and was unable to store the transaction with backup of 9-th Nov. Therefore the last *successful* backup is available for restore. Check the DB occupancy with q db. Format new volume using dsmfmt utility and use def dbv new volume and extend db num pages commands. moving ATL's
Greetings, oh wiseness of *SM! We are about to move all my 3590 tapes from one ATL to another one. It looks to me like I can change the definition in /etc/ibmatl.conf and leave the library defined as it is in TSM. True? Thanks, Kai.
Re: Library Problem
Two options: - check is this the real reason for non-operational library. I didn't played with 3570 but others work fine with both shared yes and no. - redefine the library: -- delete drives library; define back library using same name and drives. You can delete library without deleting the device class. -- define new library name using same devices;upd dev devclass libr=new definition; delete old drives and library.
